A catamaran? Two hulls would be familiar territory, but designing it so the bridge is still structurally sound and doesn’t compromise the hulls would be a neat project?
sounds like you need to brush up on our RUclips videos and all the boaters using TotalBoat. For years now! More boaters than woodworkers are using TotalBoat. And we love them all!
When I discovered your channel about a year ago, I showed the videos of the flooring and the mini pallets to my wife and said, “it’s only a matter of time before this guy makes something like a boat or a teardrop trailer out of pallets or reclaimed wood.” No joke. And wow did you deliver. Freakin’ awesome, man. Thanks again for the knowledge share.
This is the first time I’ve seen a RUclips short and actually gone on to watch the video. Love your art and your style of content making! I’m glad I clicked through.
Ok, look, I’m not a boat person, a woodworking person, or really have much of anything in common here as I’m just a disabled person stuck in bed for the last decade. But everything about this build is phenomenal. From your videography, editing, music choices, narration, to your craftsmanship, wood choices, layout of the decking, to the many dozens of hours of sanding, measuring, cutting, gluing, epoxying, fiberglassing, to your exceptional choice in the contrasting red paint and refinishing the varnish to the polished exterior and matte interior- the is the perfect RUclips video. Thoroughly entertaining, hilarious, relatable for anyone who’s ever taught themselves any type of skill or trade. All the choices you made only made the build better but your personality really shines through the way you chose how to film all your scenes. Particularly the humor was really well done. I’m surprised this doesn’t have millions of views with the quality alone. Exceptional work in all regards and provided me a few hours of pure entertainment. I hope you enjoy your new kayak to the fullest, I’ve always appreciated wood boats and their striking beauty when juxtaposed against the scenic backdrop of the ocean or lake. I hope it’s exactly as you dreamed and brings years of enjoyment.
Thanks for the inspiration to finally start restoring my 1947 wooden lightning. I'm 10 hours into just stripping paint from the hull, finally starting to understand your self-inflicted perfection-chasing pain.
Watching how this boat is made brings incredibly positive emotions, which are exactly inversely proportional to the emotions I would experience trying to build it myself. Wow, man, what a project.
What you did here was create a work of art - one that will live in your family for the rest of time. I sit here, amazed at your determination and meticulous approach. I'm not a boat builder, was formerly a model builder, so I know only a smidgen of the effort you have gone through. Good work, and God Bless.
Absolutely Awesome - love your attention to detail, the rigor in your processes and absolute drive making everything PERFECT. Congratulations on your amazing kayak and thank you for sharing - loved every second of your video. Your humor resonates with ME!!!
It has been my dream for a long time to build something like this. Thank you so much for your detailed and entertaining video! One of these kits will probably arrive at my shop before long.
What a beautiful boat. I love the final look with all the different woods. It's not something I would tackle myself. It was super satisfying watching you do it. My favorite parts are your humorous narration and your perfectly symmetrical clamp placement. Not to mention the clamp collection itself. Great video.
Love finding makers on RUclips that actually talk about what they’re doing! Also, can’t believe I’m seeing someone use total boat to actually make a boat :P
That was a fun watch! I got super into watching kayak building videos after I had a surgery and couldn't sit or lay on my back for a couple of weeks. I thought all about where I'd get the lumber from, living in NYC - I could recycle the ribs from old ikea beds for example. Then a year or so later we went on vacation in Maine and went kayaking. Of course I got seasick immediately bc that's what I do. Still fun to think about building a boat, just not so much paddling in one.
This reminds me of the project I dreamed up decades ago. I wanted to build a cedar strip style cap for my pickup. I never had the skill set or the ambition to think of trying to do it, but this made me daydream again.
That exotic timber you have is Western Australian Jarrah. It's a phenomenal timber, naturally pest resistant, water resistant and super dense. Locally a tonne of people use it for firewood but it's used for pallets, houses, jetties and heaps of houses including mine, which have all Jarrah roof timbers. I like picking out the nice bits from the woodpile for some turning 👌🏻 great project mate
This is such an outrageously impressive build. 40 minute video went by like nothing. Nice work. Haul that thing over to the western side of the state for some fresh water kayaking!
Looks great! The 2 Decade Dream is resonant. I think you could make nice wooden eyelets for the tie down parts and get rid of those webbing eyelets. Great job, it looks really cool in the water. I loved the detail; it's so simple to see yet difficult to effect.
This video is just an unintentional 40min Hillview ad 😂. There were at least a couple weeks there were my life was just the bevel gauge, block plane, and basically nothing else.
WOW, Paul! That turned out GREAT! It was so much work that it had to be a labor of love. I'm not a boat person so I won't even be attempting to build one but I can admire yours and enjoy the process vicariously through your video. Bill
Truly the loveliest watercraft made from garbage. Brilliant execution, but that design from CLC is beautiful. All those curves in a sweet flowing shape. Always good to see a project from your shop. Thanks for sharing!
You seriously opt for thee most mind-numbing, tedious tasks to produce beautiful, amazing work. You produce impeccable pieces, but I won't be following in your footsteps anytime soon lol. Great stuff!
Nice work… one finerglassing tip I’d happily pass on is the use of a peel ply layer to absorb excess resin and when you rip it off you have a good surface to bond to
I chuckled when I saw the Lavika paddle Jackman used. When I worked in a kayak shop I used to encourage new paddlers to start out with an inexpensive paddle and then try as many different paddles as possible to find out what they liked (length, blade shape, feather angle and weight.) It's best to first paddle vigorously for at least a half hour to start to become fatigued before switching to "test drive" different paddles. The cheap paddle is destined to become your spare paddle to be used in an emergency or for activities that a decent paddle should not be used. I've been known to use my custom, ultralight, carbon paddle with a $200 kayak from Walmart but the trusty old Carlisle paddle is still better for digging clams.
It’s amazing how engineering and modern material science (along with someone who knows what they’re doing) can turn something from flimsy to solid and strong.
Back in the mid 60's, Popular Mechanics had plans for a canoe. It used a 4x8 sheet of quarter inch plywood and 2 12 inch cedar clapboards for the sides. 5/4 pine for the ribs. It weighed a ton! But it floated like a cork and was very stable. We actually stood up in it while fly fishing, my buddy and I were fairly hefty boys. My mother gave it away when I went to college 😢
I have built a few boats but that's another level. I have done one from pallet wood too but painted it, as a boat user we hate varnish (Brightwork) its hell to maintain, so everything paintable is painted.
Building this is one thing, but filming it is a whole mother level. Bet it was challenging sanding smooth all those different wood species. I built a Pygmy Osprey, mouth used tape and glue instead of stitching.
Dude! Loved this build and loved the long form jackman content! Amazing work as always 😁 we needed more sanding montages to get a better feel of how much sanding went into this 😂
What boat should I build next?!
Pallet wood paddle to go with the pallet wood canoe
check out sunfish sailboats. Please build one so I can copy your work!
I agree to a paddle.
A catamaran? Two hulls would be familiar territory, but designing it so the bridge is still structurally sound and doesn’t compromise the hulls would be a neat project?
An oar. That beautiful boat deserves a beautiful oar.
Someone at the total boat marketing department is in tears for watching a youtuber using their resin for the intended purpose for once.
What's the brown stuff?
sounds like you need to brush up on our RUclips videos and all the boaters using TotalBoat. For years now! More boaters than woodworkers are using TotalBoat. And we love them all!
@@sounduser epoxy mixed with saw dust is my guess. To fill cracks

🤣 soooo true bro
Really looking forward to a video where someone pulls apart a coffee table/kayak/anything and builds a pallet.
haha, you might enjoy Bourbonmoth's video then. where he builds the most expensive pallet.

The video doesn’t do the finished product any justice. This boat is incredible! Nicely done Paul! Congrats on bringing a dream to reality
You always get a laugh out of me, but 16:41 caught me off guard
Ich habe so hart gelacht! Das Gefühl dabei kenne ich aber auch gut von der Arbeit.. 🤣🥰
I was expecting it 😅
That sent me
Perfect
I came to the comments specifically to see who else caught that. Definitely lol.
How does this man not a million subs? The best content, editing, and humor out there. Please share this with your friends! Thanks for the content.
From your mouth, to RUclips's ears, my friend 😂
I agree, but maybe the algorithm is working, I'm not even from the USA and I ended up finding this hidden wood working channel gem
Algorithm is working my friend. I am one of the new followers ❤

It was… his destiny.
Whiffleplank and Fartbark are some of my favorite boat building woods.
As a master boatbuilder, they're the only material I fully trust for my vessels
@@JackmanWorks He says dryly and wryly.
The good news is they aren’t used in construction, so the price has been pretty stable post pandemic.
As always, very impressive. While you're figuring out which boat to build next, perhaps make a pallet-wood paddle for this one?
Definitely!! I feel embarrassed paddling this around with a cheap aluminum paddle haha
In😂credible! If only I wasn't so old....
This could have easily been broken into three separate videos and we would have loved every minute. You make beautiful art, Paul.

He sings a song that reminds him of the good times.

Just incredible. An amazing amount of work went into this, not just the woodworking but the filming and editing. You did a phenomenal job, Paul.

A joy to watch. Great build.
Wow. A great story. As an irregular paddler and a wannabe woodworker, I really enjoyed watching this. Thank you.
Absolutely Awesome - love your attention to detail, the rigor in your processes and absolute drive making everything PERFECT. Congratulations on your amazing kayak and thank you for sharing - loved every second of your video. Your humor resonates with ME!!!
That is a thing of beauty sir. I hope it stays in your family for many generations.
It has been my dream for a long time to build something like this. Thank you so much for your detailed and entertaining video! One of these kits will probably arrive at my shop before long.
Always good to see you take on quick easy projects that you can whip together in an afternoon between lunch and dinner.

This man is single handedly responsible for the great clamp shortage of 2024. Not only in his state but the surrounding states as well.
And he still doesn't have enough.
seeing passionate pros do pro work is exactly what makes RUclips better than TV. I learn while entertaining myself. it’s a nice trick. nice work
Cor, that's a thing of absolute beauty.
I was kind of going eeee every time you had to drill a hole in it, after such hard work.
Love finding makers on RUclips that actually talk about what they’re doing! Also, can’t believe I’m seeing someone use total boat to actually make a boat :P
Thanks so much for sharing this and all the encouragement! It really was inspirational to watch.
I personally think it’s gorgeous. I love the red hull. Kudos to you and your OCD. You both make a spectacular kayak.
This was all done very well. The video and the works with ship. Kudos to you.

What a great project, what a beautiful result. so many smart solutions in this pocess. Love it!
Nice demonstration of procedure and technique.
Super enjoyable video. Thanks for sharing this experience with us.
This perfectly answers the question, "is it ever possible to have too many clamps?"
Fantastic video!!! You are correct when you say there is no excuse NOT to build a boat!!!!
This is amazing work!!!!! You kick ass!!!!!!!! Impeccable shop and use of it...

With all those action shots of the block plane I think I need to make you a tool with a Gnarlythorn Fartbark inlay as payment for the advertising!!

Time to make a pallet wood paddle to go with that beautiful floating pallet. Well done it looks spectacular 🎉🏆👍👍👍
so glad i found your channel with this video! Such polished content! Love your style.
