    Oh yeah, I remember Night Flight on the USA network. I used to stumble home on the weekends and watch it till I fell asleep. It's great to be young!

    My favourite band , used to hire the VHS from our local video store in the early 80s , was blown away by the footage , especially the Glasgow Apollo scenes where I’m from , Bobby Gillespie was at that gig

      That's awesome. It's fun just holding the VHS - bringing me back to the old Video Store days. But gotta say, the picture and sound on the VHS was terrific and as you said, the concert footage is amazing. Thanks so much.

      That's awesome - so awesome you saw the Clash for London Calling. I remember they played a club called Bonds in NYC - the promoters messed up and then kept adding more nights to accommodate the crowds. Thanks so much.

    Here in the UK there was nothing like Nightflight. Our 4 (yes a whole four channels ) stations didn't broadcast after about midnight. I think the whole UK population just went up the hill to bedfordshire at 12.05 😂😂. To be able to buy concert and documentary VHS tapes (Live and Dangerous Thin Lizzy was my first) was a revelation. Never seen Rude boy but will keep an eye out for it now. Thanks again Alan for a great piece

      Thanks so much. I do remember the "pre-cable" days here in the USA - We had 6 TV stations plus PBS. The stations did sign off around 2 AM by playing the national anthem. TV was free and wasn't a ton of advertising on the shows. How did they make money....lol. Now we have a million channels that we pay for and more TV commercials than ever. Lol. Thanks so much.

    I’ve never seen “Rude Boy,” but I want to. I never listened to Clash records all that much, but I’ve always enjoyed watching concert footage of the band. You did a great job evoking the feeling of watching “Night Flight” in the wee hours.

      Thanks. My son and I are big Clash fans and listen to them alot. Though I gotta say, when I put on The Clash it's oftentimes one of the many compilations - you may really enjoy like the Essential Clash or even the single disc The Singles. Truly a favorite band of mine, though I never saw them live in person.

    we didnt get cable until 1987 and it always surprises me i never latched onto Night Flight. i knew of it at the time and it seems like exactly what id be into. but i just never really paid much attention to it. i have access to the night flight streaming app and watch some stuff on it occasionally. i know rude boy is streaming on Hoopla so gonna check it out tonight. wasnt familiar with it.

      Night Flight was so different and original. It was always great or even really good, but it was an interesting mix. And then on occasion when they'd show these cool movies in full - that was cool. I hope you enjoy Rude Boy.

      @@TheAlanRosenbergShow watched Rude Boy. The Clash performance footage is great. The narrative (if you can call it that) is a slog to get through. i think you said the band kinda disowned it. I can see why.

      @@STEVEHEROLD the band did disown it. They didn’t like the narrative either. I did. But I also really liked all the shot on location at that time. Not great but yea I still really enjoyed it. Sorry you didn’t.

      @@TheAlanRosenbergShow i just didnt really pick up on any narrative. i mean the idea that this dude wants to be a roadie for the clash is a good start but then nothing really happens. theres the added political element with thatcher but even that seems like never really developed much and the main dude doesnt seem to really be part of that. i agree the scenery and footage from time is cool to see. just wished they had developed more of story to tie it all together. couldve been like a Quadrophenia for the 80s. still
      glad i watched it though. like i said i’d never heard of it.

    Hi Alan - you are an Englishman in New York right ??? lololol. I gotta say I never got into punk at all. I have a couple of Clash CD's, best of, London Calling but I rarely go there. I didnt see a lot of musicality in their songs, it was just a noise to me. The Pistols, The Clash - sorry !! Cya Doug

    • @TheAlanRosenbergShow
      @TheAlanRosenbergShow  2 месяца назад

      nothing to apologize about Doug. But to me, of all the punk bands, The Clash (and The Jam) are the most diverse. The Clash have a lot of musicality and play different styles. On the album London Calling alone is a lot of diversity. Still pretty raw. Also, as a drummer, I always thought Topper Headon was a hell of a drummer and can play lots of styles really really well. Best, Alan

      I guess of all those bands I liked The Jam the most, and have quite a bit of Paul Weller solo stuff. When I was brought up on Yes, Genesis, Jethro, Hendrix, Clapton, King Crimson, ELP -punk just wasnt in my wheelhouse, I was after something a lot more complex / technical and song based. @@douglasweston126 I was an early fan of Patti Smith, but otherwise, I also was a bit delayed to get into punk. I discovered The Clash with London Calling, so that was bit delayed. I discovered The Jam by buying Snap on vinyl and being blown away by how amazing it was. The Jam are my second favorite punk band - have all their albums and many by Weller / Style Council. So I was really delayed by The Jam. I hear you but there is some great "punk" rock out there led by The Clash and The Jam to me.
