@@shuddupeyaface I disagree. Joe started out speaking 'nicely' because he's from a middle class family, but not upper class. He's just had to shake it off to live in the real world. Just like Ian Dury had to.. who was from a mixed middle and working class background.. Well you would wouldn't you? I know plenty of people who sounded like well brought up middle class kiddies but lost it along the way - it doesn't make them fake, it makes them more real, IMO because they subconsciously knew that in order survive out there and to be fully human, you would have to loosen up your speech a bit. Nothing wrong with it... no different from pciking up an American accent or whatever. Joe was a gem of a human being, full of contradictions, far from perfect, but ultimately very humble and kind... end of story

People here slagging the interviewer, but I think he's good - he clearly knows what he's talking about, and I think he's got a bit of backbone and asking some pretty interesting questions. It's better than having Jools Holland, Mojo or Uncut backslapping, asking the same old boring questions about London Calling and talking 'bout them good old days, it's interesting to see Joe thinking on his feet.
This is really interesting, fair play to the interviewer, and long live Joe Strummer! VIVA JOE!

Great interview with my favorite all-time singer and lyricist! Yeah, the interviewer seems to be baiting Joe a bit with some passive-aggressive games, but at least he's fairly well-informed about Joe and The Clash, so there's some depth to the interview that is often lacking in other interviews I've seen of Joe. Definitely not a typical softball celebrity interview.

I thought they interviewer was just fine. He did his research - or knew his stuff - and poses questions to Joe as per views that were to be seen in the media or the public at the time. Don't blame him for it, I think he did a fine job. And why shouldn't interviewers talk over the subjects just a little bit? You don't have to be submissive, and I really doubt Joe was that egotistical as to be bothered by it. Anyway, a "chat" can often be far more insightful than shooting questions at a person and then sitting back and expecting them to do all the work. And wasn't Joe very insightful? Excellent interview!

'Walker' was a brilliant soundtrack - Joe should've done more, but it sounds like at this point in time he was more seduced by thoughts of being an actor or being anywhere in proximity to the thrill of movie production, next up was his Jim Jarmusch period. Alex Cox circa '88 was being hyped as the next big thing but never really came up with a decent movie, however, the Walker soundtrack travelled with me as aural companion to many places round the globe and still stands up as a really eclectic collection of music. Joe was a one off and here as ever he is wonderfully articulate and insightful.

This is just like a different kind of Grundy episode - instead of the swearing, you get boots over the sofa, over the coffee table. It's stronger than sneering and swearing for that matter - you just smear the dirt of the street all over the place. "gentrified Notting hill"... Strummer didn't gentrify it he lived there before the fronts of the houses were painted but the same people still live behind the curtains, I know because I still live here (it's North Kensington actually, only people who don't live here call it Notting hill, the rich live on the other side of the hill) and I know Joe lived there long before it was gentrified because I used to live opposite him, the first time I saw the Clash iit was on the guest list thanks to Joe who was also a regular customer at my fruit stall on the market, he was a lovely bloke and didn't even moan when my then Mrs got into a silly shouting fight (thank fuck they were pulled apart!) with crissie Hynde at his wedding reception even though we just walked in without invites, knowing him helped. The only drink available being Special brew on tap was the cause of the ruck I think.
I still miss the bloke he was such a nice bloke and such a talent.

It’s an interesting interview, but too much interruption. 👍 That scene from ‘Straight’ is very Spaghetti Western. Only saw it once. Looks good. Have to see it again.

That's what I liked about Joe Strummer if you are unemployed and on the Dole. Write a song about it that relates to just not yourself but those people around you too.

Interesting that he used the word hip hop. Didn't that it was used in 1988.
