The Alan Rosenberg Show

Добавлен 1 сен 2015
As a classic rock musicologist, I've been commenting about classic rock since the early 70's. I've also been an amateur musician who's played in bars and clubs. But my passion since 1973 has been purchasing and listening to great music, and cataloging them in my archives. My database shows when every purchase was made as well as my choices of best albums of the year, awarded in that actual year. I also have archives of thousands of articles, magazines, concert reviews and ticket stubs, beyond my CD's, Vinyl and Laserdiscs/DVD's. This creates my personal history of rock which I hope will be of interest to others. If anything, it's kind of unique. I also collect and watch LaserDiscs and have always been a horror movie fanatic. It's time to join the modern age....hence my new RUclips channel. I hope you enjoy.
The Clash Rude Boy Film and Night Flight TV Show
I discovered The Clash by watching their movie "Rude Boy" on USA Network's Night Flight late night TV show. Night Flight was an amazing, totally unique late night show that showed videos, short films and full length uncut cult movies. Rude Boy documents The Clash recording their 2nd album and features incendiary live footage.

In fact, his last 6 solo albums, starting with Shrunken Heads in 2007, are amongst the greatest works he's ever done. Here's my review of his two most recent albums - Defiance Part 1 (2023) and the new Defiance Part 2 released in 2024.

Rolling Stones Live in Las Vegas Review
I hope your wife knows about your love affair with the Clash and that they give you a "warm" feeling 😂. I saw the Clash at the Warehouse in 1982. The first two albums are big favorites of mine. Fun fact....... I've never had cable tv😂😂 I saw Andy's Frankenstein in 3D recently. It's certainly not a great movie, but a real fun watch. Both Frankenstein and Dracula were recently released in Deluxe editions. Of course, you know I have seen all Divine movies 😂😂😂
@@davidkunzli680 of course you saw the clash at the warehouse. Unbelievable. Can’t imagine actually. Don’t remember seeing that in the warehouse documentary. And of course you know that to know life you have to fuck life in the gall bladder. Andy’s Frankenstein if memory serves right.
I'd really love to see it, for some reason I've never caught it.
Love it , bands artist i know i agree with Bon Jovi , Queen , Foo Fighters , Billy Joel , Rush yeah ,,,add AC/DC mark 2 , Fleetwood Mac , Metallica, Prince
@@grock9263 thanks so much. I can only take ac/dc in small doses. I’m not a fan of Metallica either
Here in the UK there was nothing like Nightflight. Our 4 (yes a whole four channels ) stations didn't broadcast after about midnight. I think the whole UK population just went up the hill to bedfordshire at 12.05 😂😂. To be able to buy concert and documentary VHS tapes (Live and Dangerous Thin Lizzy was my first) was a revelation. Never seen Rude boy but will keep an eye out for it now. Thanks again Alan for a great piece
Thanks so much. I do remember the "pre-cable" days here in the USA - We had 6 TV stations plus PBS. The stations did sign off around 2 AM by playing the national anthem. TV was free and wasn't a ton of advertising on the shows. How did they make money....lol. Now we have a million channels that we pay for and more TV commercials than ever. Lol. Thanks so much.
The first time I saw The Clash it was for London Calling. It blew the top of my skull off and it was GLORIOUS! of course I remember Night Fkight!🤘😎🤘
That's awesome - so awesome you saw the Clash for London Calling. I remember they played a club called Bonds in NYC - the promoters messed up and then kept adding more nights to accommodate the crowds. Thanks so much.
we didnt get cable until 1987 and it always surprises me i never latched onto Night Flight. i knew of it at the time and it seems like exactly what id be into. but i just never really paid much attention to it. i have access to the night flight streaming app and watch some stuff on it occasionally.
Great, great vid. What you said about NIGHT FLIGHT I totally agree with. I used to watch it often. And it was just as you said. I can hear that female voiceover speaking now! Keep up the great work, Alan. 😄👍🏻
Thanks so much - yea - great memories, we'll never forget - was a great show.
I know you probably think I like everything, but the Clash couldn't get into them.I do have London Calling but didn't get into it
ooh - I'm surprised Tom. One of my all time favorites and still a regular on my playlists. London Calling one of my all time favorite albums.
@@TheAlanRosenbergShow Guess I'll have to give them another spin lol
@@thomaswery3087 I think it'll be worth it.
Yes, I remember Night Flight.👍
Such a cool and different and original show.
Hi Alan, I’ve been to many Stones concerts throughout the years, but I have to say the one I just saw at Levi Stadium last week was one of the most enjoyable. Maybe it was because I wasn’t expecting such a great performance at their age or maybe it was because I shelled out to excellent seats , 10 rows from the stage. As far as future concerts, I would love them to do smaller arena tours where they just play entire classic albums, similar to the Who Quadrophenia Tour. Maybe an Exile On Main Street Tour, or a Beggars Banquet/Let It Bleed Tour would be fantastic. That would definitely weed out the bulk of causal Stones fans who just want to hear the greatest hits and make tickets more accessible to the hard core fans. I would be even happier if they went one step further and did a tour of only their entire early RnB covers in small theaters. I always imagined seeing the Stones at this age at some small club sitting on bar stalls churning out old blues songs. I know the Stones are truly amazingly at playing all sorts of genres, rock, country, gospel, funk, etc. but primarily for me, at their core they are a blues band. No other white person comes close to singing the blues better than Jagger. The Stones along with other British 60’s bands like the Yardbirds, the Pretty Things, the Animals, really turned me onto listing to the Howlin Wolf, Muddy Waters, and Sonny Boy Williamson. The Stones are so brilliant at covering all this old RnB music and putting their own stamp on it. A concert of them doing this stuff would be my dream, but I know it will never happen.
Thanks for your wonderful comments. First congratulations on getting 10th row seats. Location, Location, Location. I saw the 2nd Metlife show, and for a stadium show, it was a great setlist, possibly the best or 2nd best of the tour. So if I was up close, like 10th row, oh man, it would have been a totally different experience. First the sound would've been great and being that close - In fact I've never been that close at a Stones show. Absolutely incredible. I don't see them ever doing a "deeper" tracks concert except when they do those small theater shows, and I've never gotten into one of them. - pretty much have to be an insider or know someone or be very lucky. - I've never been that lucky...lol. Thanks again.
Thank you r the wrap up. Your love of the Stones and knowledge of their history is so deep that I look for your opinion on all things related to them. I loved the two shows I saw in Chicago and following each nights setlist along the tour. I am sure I not alone in just watching the deeper cuts from the tour on RUclips post show. It is a shame of sorts that they haven't cycled out the well worn classics. Their bench is so deep that I truly believe they could play stadiums and put on a show to please all without them, I even think they could put that group of songs aside and put together another set of 20 to make a great show. I am a huge Dylan fan and enjoy seeing him and listening to what he has to offer that evening. However I pretty much go alone now as I don't think others will necessarily have an entertaining night. With The Rolling Stones it is a guarantee that it will be an exciting enjoyable show for all.
@@timhendrixson7522 thanks so much. I really appreciate it. I’m with you. Follow the deep cuts performed. That’s the exciting part for me. Glad I saw them. Was a fun night of entertainment. But with deeper cuts would be much more for me. That’s what I would love to see. Thanks so much again.
Led Zep, Hey Hey What Can I Do, b-side of Immigrant Song. CCR had a lot of great b-sides, many which became hits. I like Beatles b-side Don't Let Me Down better than Get Back.
@@jasonpp1973 yea fantastic choices. The Zep one is one of the greatest. For what it’s worth, I never cared for Get Back. An immediate turn off when I hear it. Thanks.
@@TheAlanRosenbergShow I like what Prince did with his Hits 1 and 2 comps, and added a whole cd of b-sides in a fatboy 3 cd set. U2 had special edition 2 cd sets with their first two GH comps, each 2nd cd was a selection of b-sides.
@@jasonpp1973 Yes - fantastic - I have both of those 2cd U2 collections and they're great (U2 have always done amazing CD singles with tons of unreleased material). That Prince set is also really cool.
@@TheAlanRosenbergShow Funny, with the recent vinyl resurgence, 45's didn't really make a comeback like 33's did. Like Blue Oyster Cult says, "time to play b-sides, lol.
@@jasonpp1973 That's an excellent point. Especially with the excessive cost of new vinyl album releases - you'd think 45's would be a solid alternative in certain situations. Really a wonderful point. Thanks. Love my B-sides that's for sure.

Never fails….. You always get seated next to that “Aqualung Person”. Been following the lads since 70 at the Aragon in Chicago and Martin has been a pillar to all things Tull. Got all of Martin’s solo works and I too had the pleasure of meeting Martin and his Wife at one of his solo shows “Stage Left” in Sellersville, Pa. Hell of a Gentleman and hell of a guitar player.
Great story - so cool you met him and his wife. So true - what a gentleman and so humble. Fantastic.
I went Also
Those were the days. Awesome
The fact that they changed up the set list was impressive So many bands play the same songs every night and the between song banter never changed (Jethro Tull anyone?) I agree with you on this version of Gimme Shelter which is my favorite Stones song. The sound was great where I sat at the show we both attended. Bad sound for a tour like this is unforgivable.
Thanks so much Larry. It is fantastic that they would add one or two "deeper tracks" in the show. But I just find the deeper tracks so much more interesting and exciting. The format of this show is pretty much the same as the last 20 years....well not totally as they did play Hackney Diamonds stuff - it's definitely an improvement but I guess I just want more deeper tracks and less "classic" that have been played to death. But I get it. I'm in the 10 percent.
Great show and review 😊 Would love a copy of your CD 😊 Regards Mark
it was sent to me in a dropbox - if you want to send me your email I can try to share it with you. Not sure if it will work but I'll try.
Just one thought.as to setlist. You (like me) have watched this band through the years many times. You always have to appreciate that every tour brings thousands of first time fans, they want and need to see the 'warhorses' and unless they play 30+ song sets (like Springsteen) it is an impossible job to play deep cuts only.
Totally true and I understand it. But other legacy artists and have moved past that - beyond Springsteen, Dylan plays shows with no warhorses as does Neil Young. U2 has done that as well. I thought this being a "new" Rolling Stones, could've been an opportunity to start "new" - go beyond this 20 year concert run of basically the same thing (well of course the new tour featured Hackney Diamonds - which is amazing). I totally get it and 90% want this. I, selfishly, would love that. They do it in their "surprise club shows" - do it for us all now.
Great assessment, I agree Midnight Rambler is a Classic song..didn't need the blues extra. I have a dvd from Bigger Bang tour where they perform Rambler in India in a monsoon! And it is a storming version (excuse the pun!)
I've seen that - absolutely incredible. My personal favorite version was when I saw them play it in Las Vegas on the B stage and I was finally upclose. It was insane. The current version wasn't even in the same league...
I was at the Cleveland show upper deck and the sound was pretty good they truly live up to their name greatest rock and roll band I don't know how they are still around they should of been dead year's ago with being rock stars for 60 year's you'll never see this again
So true - they're leading the way. Mick Jagger, especially. Beyond comprehension at the age of 81 - incredible.
Hi Alan! Do you happen to have anything on the band Sweet Revenge? They played at Sundance in Bayshore. Thank you so much for your time in advance!
Hello - thanks so much. I've never heard of Sweet Revenge. I don't remember them? Sorry. Thanks again.
I agree Alan , they should drop the classic songs if they do an indoor arena tour . Maybe start the show with Satisfaction , that would be a nice surprise rather than always ending with that .
Thanks so much....or not playing Satisfaction at all...lol....which would be more than ok with me.
I know that flea market well. I've passed by it many times on a Sunday afternoon. Will have to make a visit in my travels. Great video Alan!
@@bkbcpa thanks so much. It’s hit or miss. But I hit a lot there. When hot out less vendors and they pack up early. Last Sunday was a total bust. But sometimes it’s amazing what I find there.
Went both nights to SOFI - every seat full - AGREED - they shocked us all - IDK set list was great to me - they mixed it up a lot and lots of new stuff - great surprises in LA - Fool To Cry - Heartbreaker- totally disagree on Midnight Rambler - it was epic in LA (seen them 25X now!) :) Sympathy was reborn too
@@deand7348 Awesome you’re saw both shows. My best friend saw the first night. He thought they were just OK. He saw that many times. The second night had a much better Setlist. Full to cry. Was incredible. Lucky you. Thanks so much.

Excellent review, fair and balanced. I saw them in 2018 and they were wonderful and of course Charlie was there which is one reason I wouldn't want to see them again as it was such a.magical experience. I agree.that Keith has looking frail but has seemed much more.robust as the tour went on. When it does stop as sadly it must, we.will never see their like again

Sweet sounds of heaven. I love the song I love it live at the racquet with Lady Ga ga. But with out Lady Ga ga doesn't do it for me. I didn't get goose bumps like I did with Ga ga
I agree that it didn't meet the heights of the original version with Lady Ga Ga. I also miss the false ending. Even though we all knew it was coming, it was still very effective. Chanel is a powerhouse, but I don't think she has the range of Lady Ga Ga (or Lisa Fischer), so didn't quite reach those heights. I still really liked it though. I wouldn't have placed it in the first encore spot either though.
Hi Mate quite a thought provoking piece. On the money with the set list observation. With such a fantastic cannon of songs to choose from too. Smaller venues 100%. The energy on the El Mocambo '77 is electric. Even UK soccer stadiums are too big imo. Teleport to Eel pie island 1962? 🤔 Love your honesty
Thanks so much - I really appreciate it.
It's just Jagger & Leavel & Clifford. I see no Stones there.
I thought Ron Wood is playing better than he has in over a decade. Certainly earlier in the tour, he had to pick up a lot of slack as it seemed Keith was under the weather. Keith's playing also picked up as the tour went on.
@@TheAlanRosenbergShow keith playing better now than in the last twenty years went to LA2 from NZ
I love the Stones. But….the issue of the set list you nailed it. I was at the Atlanta show and Sweet Virginia made my night! They could do a set list of songs they’ve never played live and it would be killer. Anyone for Time Waits for No One?
Thanks. Time Waits for No One is my #1 "go-to" Stones song. And it's never been played live. Of course, who today could handle Mick Taylor's incredible guitar work on that one. Would be nice to see a try though.
thank you Alan for your review on the Rolling stones Hackney Diamond 🎉 😊 maybe if they don't stop I hope to be there this time my frist Rolling stones show was I Rochester NY back in 1965 ❤ but I have seen The stones so many times but they will always be my all time band yeah Happy birthday sir. Mick jagger Alan your show is the best and I like your Hackney Diamond T-shirts 😊 Terry M. in Pennsylvania
Thanks so much as always Terry. Wow - you saw the Stones in 1965 - amazing. I was 2 years old...lol. That's incredible.
Well, I attended the Atlanta show and thought that was the best one of the tour. That’s the show that debuted Keith doing three songs. Unfortunately, that seemed to be at the expense of Sweet Sounds of Heaven. The guitars were loud and in your face with a dash of their characteristic flying by the seat of their pants-playing. Midnight Rambler was amazing. I think Ronnie has been using more distortion ever since 2015 on that particular song and it has elevated it, imo. I also thought that this tour’s version of Gimme Shelter was one of the best in their career. Keith’s dedication to nailing the intro paid dividends and Chanel’s take on the classic made it even more special. I agree that them being more adventurous with the setlist would be cool to see. However, the warhorses hit different live. At least this is what I’ve found out. I don’t get to see them regularly whenever they tour North America , so this obvious observation had been eluding me, I guess. I don’t think Mick and co. really gave me much room to complain. Btw, Rick Beato interviewed the guy that mixes the Stones live about a month or so ago. In essence, the less cavernous a stadium, the better the sound quality. Best case scenario for a big outdoor show would be a big flat field. Here’s the link if interested: ruclips.net/video/uEcx9gdhdbw/видео.htmlsi=9SjtSkOY89oonPPh
Thanks so much for your comments - so glad you loved the Atlanta show so much. That's fabulous. I was really surprised when Keith went to 3 songs. Also greatly disappointed when they dropped Sweet Sounds Of Heaven, but they of course brought it back. Perhaps Jagger was having trouble with it then, but I've no idea. I saw the first Midnight Rambler of the tour. The terrible sound certainly didn't help it. I saw that Rick Beato interview. It's not just me, the sound of this tour, depending on location varied greatly and was sometimes absolutely awful. And it's not just the stadium, because I've seen other shows there, including The Stones. And I've had comments from many from other locations. Something was off, depending on location.
This haul is so interesting and varied. Back in the heyday of Hall & Oates, my only knowledge about the duo was their ubiquitous mega hits. I was invited to see them in concert, and I was very impressed by their excellent, passion-filled performances. It was an awesome combination of blue-eyed soul at its finest and irresistible pop/rock (of which I’m usually not a fan). I never really got into Montrose, but I saw a good cable TV documentary on Ronnie several months ago. He seemed like a good guy.
Thanks so much. I have no Ronnie Montrose albums. I had the "classic" Montrose debut album once but dumped it decades ago. I'm looking forward to reading the book on him and learning more, and seeing if I like his music. We will see. I agree that Daryl Hall is an incredible singer, and they always had fabulous musicians playing with them. With all their hits, they are the "real deal".
I’m very happy I saw a show. I did something I never do! I bought a NJ souvenir T-shirt from the website!.
That's awesome. I'm happy I saw the show too. But I left with a different feeling from any other Stones show I ever saw.....one show was enough.....

Thank you for the complete review of the latest Rolling Stones 2024 US Tour. I was fortunate to see both Los Angeles shows a few weeks ago and "Fool to Cry" (Night 2) and "Beast of Burden" (Night 1) were my personal highlights. I captured both songs on video from the mid-level seats at SoFi Stadium and will cherish those memories for a long time.......Happy Birthday Mick Jagger!!
Lucky you to see that incredible one-off performance of Fool To Cry. Their version of Beast Of Burden was also fantastic. So great you saw them both. Thanks so much.
PS.... Now Brown Sugar would be a very very very deep track😂
Yea - a number one hit, all time classic, one of the greatest rock songs of all time...vanquished and forgotten over time to come.
Happy Birthday Sir Mick🎂 This was a very good overview of the tour. I'm sad that it's over. Of course, the merchandise continues. The new crystal commertive ticket is now available!!! I enjoyed both of my shows. The sound wasn't a problem in either New Orleans or Atlanta, but then again I was in the pit for both shows. I hope there is a residency at the Sphere. I would love that. I actually think it could happen sooner than later.
You were damn near on the stage...if the sound wasn't good there, there's no hope. Lucky you my friend. If they play the sphere I'm there. The sound is beyond incredible. You have to be a good live band to play there, because every note is crystal clear. Based on The Stones performances this tour, they can do it.
I have seen the 1975 tour from the La Forum , I will say Woods guitar wrk on GS is Good , doesn’t compare to Taylor’s Version on the Muddy Waters Sessions
I saw 75 tour at MSG - yea Gimme Shelter was way different then (no female vocals for one ). What is Taylor's version on the Muddy Waters sessions. You lost me there.
Jagger n Kieth wanted Wood cause of his time with Faces n he was a Name n Kieth was Good friends wit Wood , Perkins never had a Chance , the Rolling Guitar playing on Hand of Fate in my Opinion is one of there Best ,
They were good friends. Had played together already. Played and contributed to Woody's first solo album and took It's Only Rock n' Roll from jam session there and gave him and contributed Sure The One You Need and Act Together for Woody's album in exchange. Personality wise, looks wise and playing similar to Keith was what they were looking for.
A very good review, I agree with almost everything, but would it really be a Stones show without Flash, otherwise completely agree, I saw the first show in Chicago and I was in section 108 and I, and a gentleman who came from Dublin sitting next to me thought that the sound was terrific, and again as you said location location location, but I was just happy to see them out there at their age playing rock&roll, this is new territory for any rock band that has played since the 60s, but I was happy, money well spent, I hope that they continue, but in my opinion these are the last shows we've seen in the States, I hope I'm wrong, but I don't see a quick turnaround for a South American or European tour and where does that leave the States, thanks for mentioning my Stones brother Hendrik, thanks!!
Thanks so much. Hendrik's work on the Stones is way beyond my wildest dreams so I'm grateful for his song statistics that he posted. Wonderful of him. They don't play Brown Sugar - unquestionably one of the highlights of every Stones show for decades. They didn't play Satisfaction in 1972 or 1975.....it's not missed!!! They have so many amazing songs. They can bypass all the songs in that first column (minus the Hackney Diamonds song) and they wouldn't be missed by the big Stones fans. And new fans will fall in love with the deeper classics. Shit the deeper classics are even that deep. lol. They're well known songs - oftentimes were hit singles. But yea, I went because I figured this would be it in the US. We will have to see. I'm glad I went. Really enjoyed myself. But this show doesn't even register on my favorite Stones concerts (or even concerts in general) lists.
good overview dude. i wasn’t sure how into them you were but i guess this confirms it 😂😂😂
Thanks Steve - but I'm honest and will lovingly criticize certain aspects as I see it. If everything is the best...then nothing is the best.
All the deluxe sets are top notch. The only one I passed on was A Passion Play ( my least favorite) but if they decided to do a 50th Anni ersary editiion ( ala TAAB 50th) then would get it to complete my collection
I haven't picked up Bursting Out deluxe yet as there's little new on it for me, but I'll get it for completion purposes. It's an excellent live album for sure. A Passion Play is not an easy listen and I don't listen to it that often, but when I'm in the mood I do enjoy it a lot. The boxset version of it was excellent. I actually really like the Chateau D'saster material - first appeared on Night Cap album. Excellent on the boxset.
I was at the same show as you and I agree that the sound wasn't good at all during most of the show...I was really disappointed
thanks so much for your comments. apparently on this tour at every venue...its location location location. And with today's technology and decades of stadium shows being presented...that's bullshit, bullshit, bullshit with the cost of tickets and $70 parking etc.
couldn’t agree more! I saw my first show in ‘89 and 8 times since and the sound that the ER show was awful. I am hoping that they release a blu ray of the tour so I can hear the sounds better.
@@bbaird67 I imagine they'll release either a live album or dvd. I know they did a documentary about the recording of the album and the tour preparation. Perhaps they'll do a video of that with highlights of the tour. Personally, I've no need for another live album / DVD of the same songs. I don't want that at all. But release the excellent live versions of "rarer" songs performed - the amazing versions of WIld Horses, the Fool To Cry one off. Maybe a good version of Heartbreaker. I'm in on that though.
The ONLY good Live Albums are the Ones with Mick Taylor , Ronnie Wood is awful trying to play TAYLOR Parts live , Jagger should of stayed with Wayne Perkins who plays lead on Hand of Fate , or maybe even Steve Marriot or Jeff Beck when Taylor left in 1974 ,
Thanks but that's a blanket statement that I totally don't agree with. Ronnie Wood is not in Taylor's league as a lead player - everyone knows that. But his first tour in 1975 he did play some good lead...he had something to prove and big shoes to fit into. There's some great lead (not in Taylor's league) even on Love You Live (You Can't Always Get What You Want for instance). Steve Marriott is not a great lead player? That was Frampton or Clemson in the Pie. Jeff Beck never would have fit it, though his studio work with solo Jagger is superb, its not Stones like which is why Jagger's solo career is interesting for those with an open mind. Perkins and Mandel were great on Black and Blue - fantastic lead players - wouldn't fit in with the band though live. PS - the live El Mocambo CD is fantastic fun and great playing too.
