You spoke about opening more stores in the UK. Belfast is a potential destination to consider. The high street is relatively bare so there are a good amount of options and it's crying out not only for a GW competitor but also for a FLGS for TCG's. The closest are outside the city centre by enough to put a lot off. I even know an experienced ops manager who would likely be quite willing to apply for a store manager position or discuss the opportunities.

I'm an older dude. I stared my journey with mini painting started in 1988.
A few years ago my mental health started to suffer. It was suggested to me to try painting!
Well, the Bob Ross scene is not for me but I remember painting my Orks and Space Marines.
I dived right in. The difference in the whole scene was mind blowing. The amount of resources out there is mind blowing.
What I love about The Painting Phase is the fact that the 3 of you lads are a perfect cross section of the hobby.
Jeff the grizzly veteran, Peachy the accomplished army painter and Patrick the enthusiastic learner.
Byron's explanations in this video are mind blowing. I always wondered why different paints reacted the way they did etc. How brushes behave, what things I am doing correctly and where I'm making it harder for myself.
I agree the prescribed GW way of painting is a good 'wide end of the hobby trumpet' option but the way Byron shown how to correctly dry brush is a game changer.

I cannot speak highly enough of Element Games. They are absolute insane in terms of their service. Just last week I put in a paint order for a bunch of stuff that was in stock in the afternoon and it was on my doorstep before 10am the next morning. Knowing that when they list something as in stock its actually there shouldn't be a big deal, but it really is.
Really love this guys mentality. His understanding of the human psyche is really excellent. When he talks about how even a tiny barrier can totally turn people off, he is totally right.
This is quickly becoming my favorite show.
Yes! I'm starting a nightshift in 30 mins and I was disappointed there was no podcast to kill 2 hours at work... and then I check my subscriptions before going in and here it is😁
I was painting and doing a lot more artistic work when I worked graveyard shifts. Something about the dead of night and still being up really does something for me 😅
The pros were hardly worth it for me because it started to take a toll on a lot of things in my life, relationships, my mental health.

I adore Artis Opus and Byron's Drybrushing. I finally got myself some of these Master Drybrushes and started using them on my Tyranids. Did not knew he run Element Games too.

Love these videos, guys! Awesomey, friendly, wholesome, sidetracky goodness. And Peachy is a great interviewer.
In my painting journey I have too hurdles to feeling like I make progress. Time: not much I can do to change that (dad with family and kid). And humidity: where I live has way low humidity, and it impacts paint in a big way even with a wet palate. Even nicely thinned it drys so darn quick on the brush it makes detail work a pain. I’m never disappointed with the results I get, I always try to find the positive in what I do. I just can never get over thinking that there is something I’m missing.

Old machines vs. new: I had a pump on a well that was installed in 1958. It had never been serviced, and it started up every spring with a quick prime and minimal fuss. The neighbor bought a fancy, new pump, and it barely lasted two years. So I totally get the old bandsaw thing!
Byron is an absolute hero. My S-Series are the biggest motivation to paint. You can feel the love for the hobby that went into making them
I am getting fed up with myself of saying how good these videos are but I have to say it again! These interviews (side tracking included) are just THE best thing! You get absolute gems from everyone you interview and the shows are fascinating because of it.

This is such an interesting discussion - especially the idea that many people who paint are not artistically inclined. I've not played for over 20 years and I haven't painted for that long either...but watching The Painting Phase has inspired me to get a Noise Marine (the resin version of the old-school model), a painting handle, and some brushes (army painter brand)...and I still have loads of the hexagon shaped paint pots from ages ago (literally every paint, wash and glaze) so...these videos have inspired me to start painting again. Thank you!
I wish these chat show episodes could be at least 5 hours. I love them so much.

Cheers for getting Byron on. My Kickstarter Series S brushes are still going strong thanks to the box and the brush soap teaching me good habits. I'm heartened to hear that synthetics are coming along as I'd like to move away from sable for ethical reasons myself. As my brushes die I'll be going synthetic.

Best miniature painting podcast on the internet!
As a retail designer (nudge nudge) I remember having this conversation when we did the flagship store for a client selling phones. People on a mission for a phone need all options close by. Hence why you end up with all the phone shops within a stones throw. It helps create community and areas.
A very interesting guest who has knowledge of the history of painting techniques. It interesting to hear how GW is credited with all the painting methods that have been around for decades. The major art manufactures have been making and using a lot of mediums and carriers for years before GW was thought about!
The part about the old gear was just so true! I mainly play historical games and therefore research a lot off stuff in regards to tanks for example. I remember reading about that Rheinmetall that makes armaments and cannons, used the same machine that used to make german 88mm guns to make the gun/cannon for the leopard 1 and leopard 2 tanks. Due to the fact that the machine was so well "worn in" it could just make such accurate guns, that there was no need to switch to a new one untill recently.
Really interesting chat this especially about how the different brands came into existence
I liked that Byron confirmed how matt Macragge Blue is. I started doing light gloss coats through the airbrush on my Blue Boys to brighten them up a bit. Don't like the really light blue versions of UMs but the wee bit of gloss really helps them pop.
You could always mix a drop of gloss into the blue, if it's mixed will you get less matt paint rather than a glossy beetle shell finish.

Watched Byron at the expo painting the Great Unclean one. It looked beautiful. Bought my artis opus dry brushes straight after!
I'm enjoying this episode, I've been there when gw began used their first paints as a teenager on their early blood angels , ultramarine,orcs and Tyranids used their old brushes , 30 years on mainly only building scale model cars in that time and gundam the past few years I've found myself picking up the Warhammer again, paint has changed but I've still not picked up any contrast ,speed paint, I consider myself a beginner still when it comes to miniatures ,dry brushing my necrons and using bronze mica powder ,Matt medium and flow aid to paint the armour. I think part of my enjoyment in my mini journey is experimenting with different mediums and techniques. So far my 4 units are mainly painted with Vallejo model air , I brought the primary colour pack of 8 with the silver,gold,black and white it's all I've needed for tau pathfinder kill team,runtherd and grechin,necron- space marine recruit edition

great as usual. you could do with a dedicated close up camera for when your guests bring in minatures to show. Of course, that involves time, space and money.
After watching Byron's knight tutorial on metals, I took a literal house paint brush to my abominant and it is as silky smooth as if it had been airbrushed. Completely changed my perspective on the technique.
On holiday with great people, but terrible wifi. Will look forwards to watching this when i get home 😁

Revsited a couple of Byron's guides lately as returned to dry brushing for a project and released it is so long since I have used it I have had skills degrade, great guides. Odd how we drift away from certain techniques at points in the journey.. and how we can get stuck in habits that can constrain our painting.

great podcast really enjoyed listening...i use element games all teh time cause they have a great service, website and are really helpful if something goes haywire......yeah Pester Pester Pester. I find i still paint the way i was taught in the 90's as a rule so layering/washing that sort of thing but my goto undercoat is white cause i like a brighter finish
At literally every point I can I recommend Element Games. Shoutout to the Nottingham Store, Ed and Tom to name a few of the staff are amazing people. Any future plans to extend the massive paint range into the downstairs space.... possible game room setup... (I have no idea of sizes haha) just wanting more excuses to spend time in that place!!!
Please choose the biggest city in Scotland, be a no-brainer not to😂. There is 1 warhammer shop and 1 indy games store in the city centre that's it. The paint range in the indy shop is army painter and half empty vallejo rack.

While watching this, I am currently working on some Chaos Wardogs. I am doing a ton of stippling and drybrushing that I picked up from Trovarion, but it is very similar to what you do as well. The first time I painted a knight, it took me ages, especially all the metal under structure, but with just some stippling, shading, and drybrushing they are looking great in no time.
In regards to the chat around 1:13:00 broadness relative to the shallower knowledge pool. As a tangent, in regards to modelling and sculpting, I often find myself going to ten year old old forum posts where I will discover ideas and techniques that have been sidelined, or you rarely see now? Which I'm guessing due to the huge selection of wonderful models we have now, or maybe even the ease of getting bits today as the reason

I bought my wife the artists opus set since she used the citadel dry brushes to good effect. She loves them, especially the small one but she treats them like fine china.

Totally agree with Byron on how some people treat brushes. The number of very popular RUclips painters I see slapping on paint using a crayoning motion with the ferrule, with the brush fibres splayed out all over the place, just makes me physically shudder!!

On the overcoming things people have learnt, in my professional life an important idea is how hard it is to overcome a misconception. The "rule of thumb" is "hear a misconception once, hear the right thing 20 times". The gist is that teaching something that must replace a prior idea is much harder than having someone learn the right thing the first time.

I love dry brushing up from black, I'm not a master but love the easy gradients from deep shadow to highlight...
But I found yellow paint suddenly started stripping the layers underneath down to the primer! 😮 Now I'm trying to recall if I've ever seen Byron dry brush a "big" area yellow, to refer to. 🤔

Loved this episode - super basic question, the points Byron made on satin vs matte paints for dry brushing was super interesting - is there any reliable methods for telling them apart? I'm assuming all paints are on a spectrum, and a lot don't seem to explicitly call out the expected finish.
I'll have to try Chaos Black. I recently used an Army Painter spray (which has been fine every other time) and the surface ended up extremely hydrophobic, especially for contrast paints.
It's fun having 2 cars where the lights are on opposite sides, keeps me on my toes.
Byron is such a gift to the community and I learnt - and am still learning so much about painting from his videos. I love how Sidetracked is bringing the pillars of the community together and just having a good old chinwag. Love this so much.
In the world of traditional art, much of what we're calling dry brushing in model painting is called "overbrushing" and yeah the Artis Opus methods are bringing the full technique forward. One of the issues with dry brushing in miniature spaces is it was presented as the simplest possible way to quickly paint a miniature as fast as possible. So every bit of the full tech was removed, like understanding how to keep the brush slightly damp, using the right KIND of brush, etc. The bigger dry brushes GW sold for years were not bad but they were mainly suitable for very large objects with large details. Not surprising since they were basically being pulled from the world of traditional painting where the object being overbrushed was a massive flat canvas.
The concept you're looking for at around the hour mark about old tools vs new is Planned Obsolescence.
