Dragon Ball" creator Akira Toriyama was initially supportive of the announcement of a live action adaptation and asked fans to treat the film as a different interpretation of his work, but after watching the film he was so horrified at this adaptation of his work that he decided to revive the series with the animated film Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods (2013). He later revealed that he wasn't allowed to have any creative input on the film and all of his suggestions were rejected.
If the original creator of a beloved anime is giving you suggestions for a live-action movie and you rejected them, you are seriously fucking up.
Fun Fact: The guy who played Piccolo in the movie, James Masters, went on to play the villain Zamasu in Dragon Ball Super
At least he got the chance of redemption

I remember seeing the story from "What Happun?" I can't remember if he was pressured or had no time. I just can't imagine they guy, who loved dragon ball, really thought the script was good.

If you did a real Dragon Ball movie here it would be attacked by American far left Liberals to the point doing the movie would be pointless cause you would have to major water it down because of the culture difference between American Woke Far left Liberals and Japan audiences who just want to have fun and dont care about sexual humor.
They thought by changing it up so much that it'd get a bigger appeal, but actually achieved the opposite, as it then appealed to no one.

A bad anime to put it correctly.
This movie is what happens when you take someone who doesn't know(and probably doesn't care about) a franchise, and tell them to make a movie. There are important characters that aren't there despite being key characters from the series. Characters don't act like they are supposed to. Also I have no idea why they took aspects from the beginning and ending of the original dragon ball. Did anyone who was part of this movie even watch dragon ball. They couldn't even keep the way Goku got his gi/suit.
I rather watch a Leprechaun In The Hood marathon than watch 10 minutes of this movie.

Damn, you guys didn’t shit on the after credits scene where piccolo was still alive. This needs a part 2 just to discuss the how horrible the production was. Fox lied to both Chow Yun Fat and James Marsters about the shooting location. They told them that they’re filming in Hawaii but when the plane landed they were in Mexico. The whole movie was filmed in an abandoned shoe factory with no ac in the desert, which is why they’re all looking sweaty throughout the movie.

What's even funnier is that Mai in the original anime is one of the most modestly dressed women in the show. Combat boots, gloves, military shirt and overcoat, cargo pants. The only part of her not covered is her head.
Meanwhile, anime Bulma is the one going around in her underwear, swimsuits, short shorts and a tank top. There was one episode where she was in nothing but an oversized t-shirt. Nothing underneath. Had to full on flash Master Roshi for a dragon ball.

I never understood how Piccolo's plan was supposed to work. Oozaru is supposed to take over the world? He's a 5'8" man ape. How's he supposed to do anything Piccolo couldn't already do himself?
I've been a die-hard Dragonball fan since it premiered on Toonami when I was a little kid, but ragging on someone for not having watched DBZ reminds me of those annoying fanatics who'd chastise you for not having seen Pokemon or Star Wars. Like, we get it, it's a popular franchise and I'm glad you enjoyed it but not everybody has your tastes in what they like to watch. Not everybody was the target age for it. Some people were adults by the time it came out. Some people had jobs and/or kids.
And, believe it or not, not all kids were into it either. These IP's don't need to be consumed by literally EVERYBODY, nor do they need you to White Knight for them. Such behavior reflects negatively on the fandom, reinforces derogatory stereotypes about the general public's perception of anime as well as anime fans, and alienates people that may have otherwise given it a chance on their own in the future. I say this with no disrespect, malice, or condescension intended: Please GROW UP.

Fun fact: this movie has a PSP game with hilarious character art and lazy background. And most the game is cutscenes than fights.
Justin Chatwin was shafted by the film. In an effort to prepare for his role as Goku in the film, Chatwin took it upon himself to read all of the Dragon Ball manga. On top of this, he also decided to bust out and read the Chinese novel, The Journey To The West, which was the inspiration for the Dragon Ball series' creation. And then he made this film....
That's one of the tragedies. I thought his performance in this movie was... well, pretty bad, but even if it was an amazing performance, it wouldn't have saved it. Then hearing about all the work he did into trying to understand Goku and the series as a whole just makes it worse, because it didn't matter if the actors and actresses had passion. The studio and the director clearly didn't, and you can't save a movie when all the people on top don't give a shit.

I do hope that Justin Chatwin didn’t get so much backlash for being part of this movie because I’ve seen him in other roles such as Jimmy/Steve on Shameless where he played Fiona’s boyfriend in the first three seasons (weirdly enough Emmy Rossum who played Bulma in the film did play Fiona in Shameless, so her and Justin have worked together outside of this). Both Emmy and Justin were great in Shameless so hopefully they would be remembered more for their roles on that show compared to this.
He did more research than the director or writers ever bothered to do.

I mean for the last story arc during the 3rd martial arts tourney in the show called the 23rd budokai cause they have had 20 before the series began he fights vs pikkoro's son he's 18.5 he gets engaged to and marries chi chi and saved the world wins finally and turns down the role of guardian of earth to live a quiet life for the last 16 eps canon wise 21 overall with some filler and like 36 chapters of the manga...

For the sake of clarity, first there was the Dragon Ball manga, which was made into the Dragon Ball anime, then the DB manga continued with the storyline that became the DBZ anime, then when that all ended there was a third series of anime with subsequent manga called Dragon Ball GT, and eventually Toriyama continued the story with Dragon Ball Super although I don't think he's writing or drawing it anymore. So really, although most folks know about Z, it began with the story of Goku as a kid in Dragon Ball.
That said, I've never seen this movie because I respect the original too much.
This is hands down the worst piece of Dragonball media of all time.

I mean Goku killed his own grandfather without realizing it, there's the world renown army that's set to take over the world (Hitler style) and that could've easily been a good story to twist.
Grandpa Gohan was only in the original comic for a little more than 2 or 3 chapters. He's dead when the show starts. Why bother?

The names for the actual characters are also themed. Like Goku's actual Saiyan name is Kakarot. Ya got other saiyans named Raditz, Vegeta, Broly, Nappa. All are based on vegetables. Then ya got Bulma Briefs and Trunks, Bulma a play on Bloomers. Krillin is a type of chestnut, as is his daughter.. I think it's Marron. (Maron is entirely different)
