Laundry list of items to repair/replace. At this price you expect issues. They've been a pretty popular tuner car so I'm sure a lot of people will tune in to see not only how to tune them but also fix the things that eventually need repairs or replacement.
Some will. These are nowhere near as popular as they once were. At least where I am- I hardly see them anymore. 10-15 yeas ago they used to be everywhere. I can't even find headers for the thing that are less than $700+ because everybody quit making headers for it because nobody is building this generation anymore. There used to be supercharger kits for them too but no more. BUT, it's at a minumum a cheap project car to start the channel out with, and I've always wanted one...
i get so excited seeing 3g content... but i also got mine for $800 !! we were told only about a "mystery transmission issue". but our laundry list: speed sensors (that mystery transmission issue is the car locking up and throwing up codes) major water leaks inside, valve cover leaks, cracked dash, and the alternator just went bad so the poor thing has been sitting. No ac, and he also gutted his sound system and the radio out (and left open wires connected to the battery) we were told it leaks oil like crazy but i think its mostly buildup and a minor leak. belt needs tightened too 3g GS 4cyl so its nothing too exciting, but i couldnt pass it up as my first project car. its got new tires, newer battery, and its just fun. hopefully my financials will get better and i can really put in what it needs. and who knows maybe it will just be something i flip, but its a car that has always stood out to me and its really really cool to have one, and to see people make content on it sorry for the long comment, i dont get to talk to many people about it!!
Brother I love the long comments and car talk, so type away! Sounds like yours is just as rough as mine lol. I actually just came in from tinkering on mine, finally got it running right after fixing all the leaks (not sure if you saw the other videos). It has been a nightmare! But at least it's back on the road now. Now I still have everything else left to fix lol. Flip the GS then take the money and go get a GT! *SO* much faster...
@@92kbuilds-mn2lk the flip to a gt is a good idea, regardless if i get lucky with $ and timing my plan for a 4cyl is turbo, and then give the rear wheels an electric motor, for an awd build hopefully focused on the rear!! im a little behind on the vids but i plan to catch up sooon
I just traded my gaming pc for a 2003 eclipse 2.4l. Stalls after initial startup. Stays on about 2 seconds with the maf sensor plugged in, but stays on with it off. Actually thinking it’s the iac tho as multiple good mafs didn’t change the issue except for getting the check engine light to go off lol. I need eclipse friends! I’m down to link up and discuss more about our 2.4l!
Yep that’s decent little list. To me, exhaust leaks are one of the most annoying little problems older cars develop. Still you’ll come out on top and have a good little car.
I'm getting excited because I almost have it back together after the teardown. Tomorrow hopefully if the weather is decent, then no more coolant and oil leaks and it should run a lot better as well...
the coolant leak is most likely coming from the thermostat housing. i have dealt with 6g72s and 4g64s my whole life, I kinda know a lot about them lol. your tire is dry-rotted, the tire was made on the 10th week of 2012.
I felt around the thermostat housing (under the thermostat) and it is dry. I assumed it was the o-rings on the water pipe that runs between the heads under the intake manifolds. Isn't that water pipe a common issue? Read many threads about it leaking. That said, car is back together (update videos posted), but I still have a coolant leak running down the transmission. Again it's dry under the thermostat. I have yet to tear back into it to find where it's comming from because one of the radiator pipes is leaking and I need to fix that first (waiting for payday). Since you know them so well, what's the best fluid to run in the 5-spd trans? I got a 2nd gear grind that I would like to try to improve without a full rebuild. Lastly, working on getting new tires...
my 2003 Spyder GTS 3.0 convertible has 231K. probably the most reliable car i've ever owned. I do the work myself. have done the timing belt 3X, and I guess a chain would've been nice. but other than some exhaust leaks, that I fixed, just routing maintenance. I of course did a few repairs. Valve cover gaskets, alternator, struts (but what do you expect with 230K plus? plugs are a pain in the ass, but i did them twice. second time was three times as fast. Great car IMO
As I'm sure I mentioned in the video, mine was neglected. I got it pretty well fixed up now and it's currently my daily. Had to do the timing belt 3x already in 3 months 😅 - Sure wish I knew the pulley set tension as well as the tensioner...
As a retired mechanic my advice if you are going to keep it is new radiator thermostat hoses. Any fluids -change them. The bolt holding the harmonic balancer is notorious for coming loose DANGER! Mine is newer and in an suv. When I got it home i realized the bolt , balancer and the lower timing gear needs replaced. Get the tool that holds the balancer while tightening is a must. 133 in lbs and only a roll pin no keyway.
This engine uses o-rings, which are usually flat and hard. Both front camshaft seals were leaking and they claim to have replaced 3 alternators. I changed it when i bought it then fixed the leaks. They thought valve cover - not . The rear camshaft seals are o- rings. I fixed seven leaks so far and it still has more.
I think my fluid level is good but I'll double check, clutch is good as well. But generally when it is only one gear that is problematic, especially the 1-2 shift, it's because of a worn syncro. The harder people run the cars and the more miles they get on them the worse they get.
What's crazier is the dude was wrenching on an SRT-4 turbo neon when I showed up to check out the Eclipse. How can you be a car guy and not realize you have 90psi in your own tire? Lol. Idk, it was at his brothers house so maybe his bro messed with it or something. Yeah I watch a channel that shows the cars that shops get in, and triple to quadruple over inflated tires seem to be a common occurance for some reason...
As with most car problems, there is a laundry list of things that can cause this issue like wiring, sensors, air & fuel problems, etc. I would suggest doing a google and youtube search for what causes a high idle, make a list, and then start checking everything that can cause it. There are just too many things that could cause it so there is no way I can guess over the internet what the 1 exact issue of a dozen possibilities is causing it. Process of elimination is how these things are solved. I made a video on this car tracking down a misfire, and it was the last thing I checked after about a dozen different things...

My manual trans grinding before i changed the clutch, master, and slave cylinder i personally didnt have much fluid in my clutch system

Bought mine for 260$ the 3.0 v6
That thing got a bad head gasket that’s why it was overheating
Um, no, it was overheating for the exact reason I said it was. I fixed the coolant leak and now no more overheating...
I traded up and got myself the 2003 eclipse GT 3.0 5spd at 129k but blown headgasket
Did you fix it?
@92kbuilds-mn2lk when I get the funds for it
Not bad for 800
So, what did you ecpect for 800 bucks? You had 2 choices...tske it or lesve it 😂😂😂
Just making content brother...
BTW. I paid more for a bicycle once. 800 bucks? the gas in the tank is 50, thanks to Joe
