Those old mags are a work of art. The newer ones have a better magnet but aren't as decorative. There's something about that big horseshoe magnet that is neat looking. I all of my antique tractors have had mags on them. The only tractor I have left is a 49 Allis Chalmers B. I rebuilt the mag on that one 19 years ago and It's still working great. That has a Fairbanks Morse mag on it. I was still working as a line mechanic at a Chrysler dealer and had the mag at work. One of the rookies, who thought he knew everything was playing with the mag after I had rebuilt it. It was clamped in a vise, sitting on a metal workbench when he rotated the impulse coupling. I told him if he heard it click he was going to get bit. He didn't listen I heard the impulse trip and him scream like a little girl at the same time.

Your composure, your knowledge and skill, and your well-informed and orderly delivery and commentary are unequaled. Considering your modesty and unassuming manner, you probably don't even realize that you are a true modern day hero. Truly. This all arises from your years of work, thought, problem solving, and heritage. You can't fake that. Thank you both so much for all your work.

Squatch, i am from South Africa. I grew up with 630,730,'70 10,20,30, John Deere' s and one early D4CAT Dozer. Early '70's?? I think. You have thé best Utube éver channel. I kid you not. I' m 52.5yrs old now. Your way of explaining and easyness of commenting calms me down and take me back to when life was simple and better quality than now... Please proceed sir!! I salute you. Your remarks about the company wanting to let everyone know who made their product and that they were proud of it is right on the mark. I believe a lot of that was because the person who started the company designed the product and was an integral part of the company. Now when most of the companies are run by money managers whose job is to extract the most profit from the company and likely couldn't identify one of the components they supply that is not ever going to happen again.

If everyone's pony motors ran as well as yours do there wouldn't be a market for direct start kits for Cats! Man that's a sweet running little pony. Hope all is well, great start to a Monday, or here in Japan, start to a Tuesday!

@@squatch253 I completely agree with you on the starting engine being the ideal way to start a diesel without any sort of other starting aids. In fact, the few people I know who have purchased and installed direct start conversions in my neck of the woods (Upper Peninsula of Michigan) haven't been happy with them. You just can't get enough heat in the engine with an electric starter to get the machines to reliably start below 40 degrees. They end up using excessive amounts of Ether, lighting charcoal fires in metal 5 gallon buckets, or drain pans to try and warm the oil, or both. Cat ran pony motors for a LONG time, because they just flat out worked. Even in sub zero temps, you can just run the Pony longer to help get some heat into the coolant, and you always had good oil flow and pressure in the main engine when it did fire. The international gas starting system also works quite well even in really cold temps, I once started a 1950's Austin Western road grader with a 460 cu in 4 cyl IH Gas start Diesel in single degree temps that hadn't run in 8 months with just a group 34 car battery. Fired right off on gas, ran for 4-5 minutes and switched flawlessly over to diesel. They don't make stuff like this anymore, and it's a shame. I much prefer heavy cast to plastic and stamped tin.

Again, I love the detail you put in your videos. I love these old machines, been fascinated with machinery since I was a kid. Grew up on a david brown, and big ford diesel 4x4 that my aunt owned. Mostly I have small tractors, all vintage Sears, but I love all things mechanical.

Squatch we had some old Moline well engines on the farm and every so many years we had an older gentleman come rebuild the mags. After he would rebuild them he'd spin them over by hand with his finger in the terminal. He'd jump and go yep it's good!!!!

I have said this before on other videos about magneto service: CAT mags are on fire! I got bit by one and I thought I'd pee'd myself; almost fell off the track of the D9 I was working on. I've been hit by several coils and mags, but nothing compares to that CAT pony motor magneto. :) Damn! Be careful when messing with it.

i have a thought.. you recall a few videos back about copper washers on important bolts that need to seal.. i think the 4 mag mounting bolts count as needing to seal.. to keep any rain and wash down water from wicking down the threads and into the magneto.. i would think some Hylomar or the hylomar in a permatex tube called Flange sealant 85420.. on the threads to act as an anti seize and extremely long term water proof thread sealant that never hardens. i have split VW cases that were 17 years assembled. and the hylomar on the surfaces was still tacky and sealing. heck.. i might coat the mounting flange of the magneto with a very thin layer of hylomar to prevent corrosion when placed against the iron mount. the mounting bolts should have enough ground connection to complete the spark return path to the magneto..

Hey Toby! Does the RC-2Q mag require a certain impulse for these starting engines? Mine looks the same as yours but it is catching and binding while cranking, then sometimes its ok and snaps over, had Marks magneto install a nos impulse and its acting up again. Thanks, Gary

Never mind, I took the mag apart and found out the armature shaft is 1/4" too long and was holding the pawl assembly to far away from the catch plate. It would catch and cut the catch plate till it would latch anymore.
