Hi, just wanna say I love fish and I wanted to have a fish tank, so after watching your videos for months I have improved so much in my aqua scaping. So I now have three tanks😂. I’m only a teenager and nobody understands how great having a fish is in a natural environment. I try in involve my friends in what I do. Thank you for letting my fish thrive!
hey MD, i have a baby brisbane river turtle it's 5 weeks old now but i have not seen it bask on it's basking rock, do you know why, or is it to young to bask.
@@dallaslinnett1918 are you certain that species needs to bask as much and also im pretty sure they do bask less when young. Good luck with the little guy
I've recently gotten interested in Aqua Scaping as a hobby to move away from all the electronics in my life. Of all the channels I've checked out, I love yours the most. I love the enthusiasm you have for the hobby, and your dedication to mentioning even little things even if you've probably repeated them 1000 times over the course of your videos. Can't wait to get my first tank, and thanks for the enjoyable & educational content!
To make it more realistic, you should've had dark colored mystery snails instead of ramshorns, maybe the brown or black ones. Although they're pests, some rice fields have apple snails, the family which the mystery snails are from. Not even sure if mystery snail is a specific species. Either way, they're almost the same, if not exactly the same, and they may even lay eggs on your pond plants
Yup, they're pests in rice fields but I agree that it will make it more realistic. And with how thrilled he is with his fishes' eggs, he might also find it great when his mystery snails come out of the water to lay theirs. Also the pic he showed where ducks are in the fields, farmers sometimes just let them loose cause they eat the snails, well at least here where I live
Hey MD. Greetings from across the pond from South Africa. First time commenting, but have been following your journey since you were still in the single shed studio in your back yard. All I wanted to say is THANK YOU. Thank you for such stellar videos and for your quirky humor. In times when the world is on its head, switching on some MD videos always makes me smile. Please keep the videos coming, you mean alot to so many of us! Cheers mate
It's so interesting to hear other folks experience with bettas. Mine is exactly the same. Sometimes they're great, sometimes they are absolute jerks. Male, Female...doesn't matter. Even if I'm sure they're cool with other fish, I still float them for a day in a drilled out floating plexiglass box. I'm probably paranoid though...
If I bought my dream house, it would have one huge room just of fish tanks. I love aquascaping. When I was in school, I used to do the reptile and amphibian enclosures. I redesigned everything in the herp house. Now I have three tanks of fish, frogs, and shrimp. 2 tens and a twenty. I love watching you do set ups. This one is really special.
Hey MD. I notice that many of your tanks don't get past the 'honeymoon phase'. I always find plants start to look a bit meh after about 6 months - 1 year. I get that it's not usually your thing to have long term tanks but it would be cool to keep at least one tank long term, just to teach people how to get over that hump. Beautiful ricefish tank btw!!
ive had lots of tanks at the 6 month to 1 year mark my friend. The way to stop what you are talking about is root tabs. All the way. Sounds like the nutrients in the substrate have been used and need to be boosted.
They normally start looking meh because of a lack of nutrients. Even nutrient rich soils will run out of it after some time, which is why supplementing with things like root tabs is very important after the plants are out of nutrients
@@MDFishTanks ah thanks for the advice! Would love to see just one long term tank though. I'm talking multiple years. Or if you already have one, would love an update on the maintenance. My tank turned four today, just as interesting as they day I made her.
Your substrate has run out of nutrients and minerals, or the plants aren't getting enough from the water column. As MD said, use root tabs and you can dose the water too.
Nice to see some Mekada/ Japanese rice fish on the channel. I recently started keeping some as I picked up some good quality white platinums (they're very pretty!) and it's been an interesting experience. I originally put them in my shrimp/ cory tank as needed something in the upper part of the tank and to eat up the ammano fry. But turned out the Medakas are absolute eating machines. Not only did they eat their food but if I put food on the bottom for the corys, they'd immediately spot it and scrum around the food and drive off the corys. So they were getting massively overfed while the corys/kuhlis were going hungry D: In the end I took the Medakas out of the tank and set them up in a small tank of their own with some shrimp that are large enough to not be predated by them. I did think about re-homing them but they've really grown on me. Because they are so food motivated, they're always active and super friendly. As soon as they see me anywhere near the tank they swim straight over and they soon learned tank maintenance wasn't anything to be afraid of and are more curious about it than scared. While I didn't want another tank, I found myself not wanting to part with them XD So yeah, if you're looking for small but interactive and friendly fish then I'd suggest them. But i'm my opinion you need to keep them in their own tank so you can control their food intake. Mine have been fine with otocinclus, snails, cherry and amano shrimp as tank mates (though as previously mentioned, shrimp need to be large enough to not be eaten as Mekada are micro predators and will absolutely eat fry/ small shrimplets).
Me, returning from a rice field... usually there's no stones and the water isn't that pristine, but it's not a rice field haha 50% realistic 50% scape👍🏽
One of my favorite setups so far. I also have just set up a barrel pond and have some rice fish eggs in the kitchen. Make sure you plants are planted at the right height though and aren't too deep/shallow. I'm sure Matt talked to you about this or it says on the plant label.
You literally read my mind. I've been thinking about setting one of these up (just a small one). I even bought the brown rice to try germinating the rice myself.
After watching, the only thing I would do differently is use aqua soil or something dark for the substrate. Having grown up in places like Cambodia and Thailand, I'd love to recreate a paddy field scene. I would have opted for a betta with the rice fish, but the rice fish on their own look great.

I’ve been trying to get rice fish here in Australia. I thought it would be easy being closer to Asia, but no luck so far. I want to do an outdoor pond just like this. Great job ❤️🇦🇺
I have a plan/pipedream to do something similar but with UK native plants and stickleback, like an English countryside riparium. It will be interesting to see how those outdoor pond plants get on in a heated room with artificial lighting.
Found your channel this week and it's hella informative/fun to watch. I love your Tetra aquascapes and would be thrilled to see a Lemon Tetra vid. Take it ez brother.

I have been watching you for a long time and I've never seen you do a bad tank. They always look fantastic and different. Each one has been unique in some way. Amazing.
Absolutely love how honest you are
This is one of my absolute favourites thats you've done. So simple but stunning!
A wild type betta would look very cool in there....
Good job Mr MD
You made planted tanks seem less scary and I'm excited to have my first aquascape done after my current breeding project!
Nice tank! It does look very natural.
I have three different color rice fish white, blue and orange but I have them in stock tanks outside I really never thought about doing a realistic tank like the one you just did I really love it and I think I’m going to give it a try 😁
Shouldn't you use a darker sand to simulate a rice field? It will make the rice fish colors pop even more right?
I really like this one man!! It's awesome to see you take a step out of your regular!!! coolness. saludos desde Costa Rica :)
Super cute.
I hope we see more of timmy soon!!
Great scape. I think it would also look great in a paludarium considering the shallow water set up
always excited to see a new scape from you!
I’ve been trying to get rice fish here in Australia. I thought it would be easy being closer to Asia, but no luck so far. I want to do an outdoor pond just like this. Great job ❤️🇦🇺
I thought of this idea too last week and boom you did it! Haha Maybe I'll get lampeye instead and a Betta would be fab!
I have a plan/pipedream to do something similar but with UK native plants and stickleback, like an English countryside riparium. It will be interesting to see how those outdoor pond plants get on in a heated room with artificial lighting.
Looks really good and nice switching things up a bit. It’s nice to see something a bit different.
Adorable
Found your channel this week and it's hella informative/fun to watch. I love your Tetra aquascapes and would be thrilled to see a Lemon Tetra vid. Take it ez brother.
Wow, this was such a unique build!! Cool
just imagine a little african frog in there so cute
I would love to see a moss wall aquarium style
