Building a RIVERBANK in my aquarium!

- Half a year ago I bought a 6ft Waterbox fish tank. I always wanted to take advantage of the peninsula style by creating a cliff face/river bank scape at the base of the tank. However, after many attempts, I still couldn't quite get it right!
A couple of months ago, my friend Nick introduced me to Jason Sulda on a rainbow fish catching trip. Jason has his own channel Australian Biotopes where he documents and creates biotopes of native environments. I was lucky enough to have Jason offer to create the scape I had always wanted for this tank and he did an INCREDIBLE job. In this video I show you exactly how he did it so you can enjoy watching the process and maybe learn a thing or two about aquascaping!

You did a wonderful job putting this video together Kaity, this will hopefully show people that you can have a large tank that you can keep simple and still have it looking natural, I have to add after sitting down and talking to you we had to take into consideration that you live a busy lifestyle with a full time job and also with your RUclips channel, not to mention last time you set it up you had to pull it down a couple of months latter, this can be achieved with this scape now, it is easy to clean from all sides and still looks good from every angle but if needed it could be pulled down and put back together in a day, and this is why we didn't get to intricate with the glueing of roots and making it to permanent, the fish love it, the way I have placed the plants should stop the rainbows from jumping as the water flow comes from the back of the tank were I placed the plants it will act as a bit of a barrier as they normally jump towards the water flow to make their way up stream, the val will eventually flow over the tank to give it almost a tunnel look that will look good from all sides, this is something we also had to consider when doing this peninsula aquarium, we also had to keep into consideration even though you wanted a natural stream looking tank, you still had pets you wanted to keep so although this could be a true biotope I know how much you love your pet fish and others would agree if your not doing it for competition you don't have to be a 100% biotope correct your other pet fish will love it to, we had a great day doing this, it's always fun aquascaping 🙂
Thank you Jason!! Yes those are great points you add 👌 You did a fabulous job at making it look stunning while also being practical
@@Kaityscichlids Thanks for having me, it was a great day, the tank looks like it's doing well 🙂
I love it, now if I could just find the right wood work I
want I could do my 75 the same way, but in a bigger
size tank makes it pop, I've got most the stuff I need
& going on a Fla trip next month hope to find what I'm
looking for by the time I get back to Indiana to work
on mine.
hello how are you my name is umar and iam from pakistan🇵🇰 i had some questions
1 why he use cloth in tank
2 can we use any sand or you have to get it from sea . can we use river sand also
3. people say plants can damage fish body
if yes then what should i use to make natural look
kindly guide me
thanks regards
umar
Really like the grading of substrate. I've spent a lot of time in rivers as a fishing guide, and it's something you notice. Big to small when trying to create depth. I've always tried to emulate that in my tanks. Good stuff Kaity.
Thank you Tom!! 😊 Yes it's really cool how you come to observe that stuff. It makes me appreciate nature even more
I just use a flat substrate system as my fish really need the legroom lol
I want to soon create a sloped river bank themed tank as well
I have a river theme tank but it’s more of the center of the river and flows laterally of course
Wish I had the room to recreate an entire river

Thanks mate! 🙂
Gotta throw a thumbs up on Blake's comment!!! I've started saying "G'day legends" in an Aussie accent to my fish every morning. 🤣

This is definitely the coolest usage of a peninsula tank I have ever seen.
Thank you 😄
This is one of the better tank setups I’ve seen in ages. Love the natural look
Yes, Jason definitely did a great job with it!
I'm a freshwater bass fisherman on the Macleay river in NSW and I've spent a lot of time with my head underwater looking at snags and river bottom. Your tank is so realistic and bloody marvellous. Top job.
If you have a tank like this in youre home, youre a happy human…GREAT tank!
Jason did such a wonderful job, it really does look like a natural stream 👍
You're so lucky to have great friends in the community 😊
I am definitely very very lucky!!
Thank you!
@@australianbiotopes4563 Work like yours deserves the praise 👍
I wish I had a friend
I absolutely love how natural and beautiful this aquarium is. I really enjoyed your video of catching rainbowfish in the wild and this tank encompasses some of the stunning scenes we all got to see in that video. Keep up the amazing work! Love your videos
Thank you so much!! Yes it was really cool being able to see their natural environment. It really made me appreciate Jason's ability to be able to emulate that
@@Kaityscichlids he's very talented and he seems like a great guy 😊
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 WOW... Jason has a brilliant talent ... I love the biotope design tanks and Jason & his daughter has delivered your dream design.
Thank you so much 😊 They really did a fantastic job!
One of the most natural river aquarium scapes I've seen. Will really enjoy watching it mature.
I agree!! It's going to be cool watching it grow in 😊
Thank you!
Jason has such a keen eye for detail and makes the result look so natural. Amazing aquascape.
He absolutely does, he did such a fantastic job
I love the results of this tank. Aquascaping a peninsula tank is very hard. I don't think many people that have not done it understand how difficult it is to make a tank look good from both sides as well as the end. I built mine up with large pieces of wood one the back end and used lava rock to slop down to a black sand "beach" at the viewing end. As hard as it is I think it is much more interesting and captivating than a regular tank that is only designed to be seen from the front. I get to watch my fish all around the tank.
It can be difficult but once done it makes a beautiful centre piece or a divider to a room 🙂
I agree!! I prefer my peninsula tank over my one that's against the wall. It feels a lot more dynamic. Very true though about it being hard to scape unless you are Jason lol
i love the fishtank design! i love river tank designs, specially those tank have fast moving water in them, so fish that tend to stay in streams and rivers with faster moving water as well as plants that flow in the current, id love to see that in more fishtanks
Absolutely love this tank well done everyone it looks amazing
🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Wow Kaity beautiful tank! Love the natural look. He did a great job. I love it
He really did! Thank you so much 😊
Absolutely BEAUTIFUL! I'm also into natural looking themes. I hate plastic plants and fake looking anything. Great job!
Omg what a dream-build. Looked really great before but now it's so natural. 💯
Wow, it looks amazing! Some great tips here for freshwater aquascaping😊
Thank you so much 😁
Thank you!
i'm glad i didn't fast forward to skip the intro like i normally do :). i hope you will never have to move again lol
If Kaity has to move this is made so it can easily be pulled down and put back together, it would probably only take a day.
Yes Jason did a great job at making it all moveable! I still hope I don't have to move though 🤣
I've been quite intrigued with the fishkeeping hobby down under over the past few months. Exploring aquatic habitats and keeping tropical fish are passions I've had for as long as I can remember. It is cool to see them seamlessly combined in Australia. I'm jealous... here in Canada I am inspired by the habitats I explore, but being able to bring the exact habitats you have visited, along with the aquatic inhabitants and display them in your home is truly next level. Jason has been doing some amazing work at his channel and it is fantastic to see him help you achieve the riverbank look you were after. Keep up the good work!
Thank you so much! Yes it's been fantastic and so rewarding. Keeping native fish and looking into biotopes is something that's new to me too which I'm thoroughly enjoying. It's really making me appreciate the area we live in more
Thank you for this wonderful encouragement. That's exactly what I was looking for. Greetings from northern Germany. 😘😘🥰🥰
That's awesome to hear :) Thank you Christine!
I have to say, that turned out to be a beautiful tank. What a center piece. I bet you are very proud of this one. Keep up the Great Work.
Thank you so much!! Yes, Jason did a fantastic job. I am very, very proud of his work
The scape I have been looking for !! Excellent.
That's cool that you catch native fish 🐟. I do the same thing in Cleveland Ohio in the streams and river's.
That's awesome!! I visited Cleveland in July last year to see Ohio Fish Rescue 😄 I was only there a couple of days but really enjoyed it!
@@Kaityscichlids I know I saw the video. It's nice in the summer here, not winter 🥶...lol 😆. I catch all kinds of cool looking darters and other interesting minnows. Thanks for responding to me ☺️

Fantastic, for the first time I watched a step by step of this type of assembly. You have a very pleasant room now, I feel like spending hours contemplating this incredible aquarium. Good work.
Thank you so much Paulo 😊
Really,Really nice, to use that as a peninsula tank was genius, the natural look with the wood, roots, rock and substrate is my favorite, have 3 planted fresh tanks myself but none of them are true native scapes
I really enjoy watching these videos. I have placed my Aquarium in my bedroom and some time I play some really relaxing music, and that is amazing. Helps to relax and falls asleep very quickly. Fish are amazing creatures, everyday i learn something new from them.
Thank you so much :) That's great to hear. I totally agree, they are so relaxing to watch!

So glad to run into your channel, this is so lovely!
Thank you so much 😊 That's lovely to hear
as good as it looks, I couldnt think of anything worse than letting someone else scape a tank for me. I'm relatively new to it, but trying and failing is all part of the learning.
Thank you 😊 I can actually safely say I learnt more from this than the 3 times I tried and failed to scape this tank!
How does the water in the tanks look so clean? What do you put in the water to help clean it?
@@nicholasriley1169 Filter media like polyester stuffing catches fine particles in the water that make it look cloudy

Ladies I would like for you to do something nice for this gentleman. He deserves it he's so chilling and he's good on camera and his voice comes in very nicely so I can understand everything
After trying to convince my wife to do a bigger and tank and get rid of our smaller ones. She immediately approved once seeing this video. It goes to show how talented Jason is when he can take a reluctant non fish keeper, and show them one example of his work and make them want a 6ft tank in their home. Thanks for making the video!
That eel is awesome!
Hahaha, yes I love him!! He doesn't often make an appearance but when he does he is very cute

@@Kaityscichlids hi Katie I have an afician cichlid tank myself the same size as your same sort of fish but I have 6 parrot fish and 4 catfish in the tank. I run 2x fx6 fluval.

This is incredible
you should post a link for the drainage cells. I feel like those could really help in a lot vivarium applications as well.
I'd also love to see a local source for these. This looks better than the bags of ascoria I currently use to achieve substrate depth
He has done a magnificent job, It makes me wish I had what you got even more now. Well jealous 😆
Hahaha, he certainly has!! I am very very grateful 🙏
@Kaity I look forward to seeing you catch a ton of fish to fill it with. I only find plastic and shopping trolleys in my local waterways 🤣
Looks amazing .the substrate looks really nice how he blended them. Definitely a lot more natural. I was still fond of the way you did it, but this way is a lot more natural the way you wanted. Tank looks beautiful ,right scape with the right fish. My aquariums are mainly reef and a small planted. This made me want to get another tank and do a hard scape also. Thank you for taking time to share with us.
Thank you so much Mark! I agree, it looks a lot more natural now. I am a big fan of hardscapes too because they're so low maintenance 😁
