    One thing I'm surprised no one talks about is the fact that Buck actually saved a girl from getting sexually assaulted, a usually dark moment for an otherwise lighthearted movie.

    • @rivercitymud
      @rivercitymud 4 месяца назад +7

      That was kind of a thing in 80s movies that I never noticed at the time, but it really stands out when I watch reaction videos. A light-hearted romp focused on kids will randomly have some extremely disturbing sexual calamity and breeze right on past it like it was part of the scenery. I guess back then it kind of was part of the scenery, even in real life.

      @@rivercitymud Another one that comes to mind is the movie "Beethoven" (1992) a goofy romp involving a family and their St Bernard that took a dark turn when it was revealed that the movies villain a scheming veterinarian played by Dean Jones was using dogs for nefarious experiments.

    If you think about Buck as a character, it really couldn’t have sounded like anything amazing on paper. Like, “Single gambler uncle in his ‘40s comes to babysit kids for a week”? Why would anyone find that at all interesting enough to go watch? Yet, when the trailer came out for this, it looked hilarious, and when I went to see it with my family, it was. The entirety of the charm of the movie is just John Candy and his dealing with these kids, who themselves were all wonderfully cast.

    In the scene where he drills a hole in the door to rescue his niece from that disgusting predator Bug, and they show this girls face:
    You see a look of someone who is afraid, embarrassed and wants to be rescued.
    I love that the fact that her not being his family doesn’t stop him from intervening. There’s a lot to be learned from this small scene.
