I been a fan of Skillet since 2010 they're still going strong, the new style change makes me keep an open mind. But the Awake album will still be the thing I remember them for.
For me the apex of Skillet are Comatose and Collide, everything before that was interesting but not as powerful IMO, and Awake (the only album I've listened to since) just feels like they've lost a step. I'm glad they're getting new fans nowadays, but their more recent content just isn't for me to be honest
invincible was ok then I heard stars and it felt weird hearing it and I thought oh no skillet has tone down that is till I heard undefeated resistance and burn it down and that renewed my faith in the band that they were still hard and edgy just the way I like it but that's just me
My favoirte album from them will always be Comatose. i wasnt a huge fan of Rise and i honestly cant stand 'Feel Invincible'. Ill give this a ahot though
And that's the problem with some skillet fans. The band matured, the fans didn't. They still want the 2005 emo rock style, but Skillets moved on from that. Honestly, I only like about half of Comatose. Some songs are great, but others are just too cheesy for my taste. Meanwhile on albums like Rise and Unleashed, there's only one song off each I could go without.
branm25 it was an extremly polorazing album the first time I heard it, relying more on electronic anthems than loud guitars,it just didn't sit right with me the first time I heard it. But a year later and I think this is one of skillets stronger albums. It comes no where close to touching comatose or awake, and it has the best sounding skillet album to date in terms of production. It also has more high points than 2013's Rise which was a strong if not inconsistent album. I give Unleashed a solid 7/10.
I can't stand the way the electronic elements took over the band's sound on the first two singles, but Back from the Dead sounds pretty good. I think I'll check out the album.
The best album in my opinion is Comatose, with Awake being a close second. Rise was the album that helped me get through some really hard times, but it's not as good as the last two. This one is as good as Rise to me. Replayable, but not something that should be Grammy nominated. Fun album though. This is coming from a loyal Skillet fan.
I found this album really boring. musically is very solid, but lyrically he's saying the same damn thing over and over. almost every song is about rising up and it just gets to repetitive for me. they aren't trying anything new here, just feels to predictable. 4/10
Yeah I agree, what a lame excuse to be experimenting more "musically" than lyrically. I checked that 4 songs have the word "rise" in it.. "This is how we rise up" and "I will rise up on my own" and "we will rise" and yet another song with "we will rise".. The repetitive bland lyrics made it so much worse. The whole album felt over-produced and most songs were very cringy. 2/10
My album rankings Collide Invincible Alien Youth Skillet Hey You, I Love Your Soul Rise Awake Comatose Unleashed Upcoming tenth album (I bet it's going to be worse than Unleashed)
This album I’d give a solid 4/10. And that’s being generous. Monotonous to listen through, lyrics are corny, annoying as all hell with the electronica sound, very lackluster feeling with the actual music. Couple halfway decent tracks; but not enough for me to even download the album. Comatose was the last amazing album this band made. Awake was decent but there were really only three good songs. They also got so much air time that I find them to be insufferable now.
Feel Invincible (3/5 ok) Back from the dead (4/5 good) Stars (1/5 Bad) I want to Live (5/5 classic skillet) Lions (1/5 bad) Undefeated (3/5 ok) Out of hell (3/5 ok) Burn it down (2/5 meh) Watching for Comets (5/5 classic slow song from skillet. Much better then the other two) Saviors of the World (5/5 classic skillet) The Resistance (3/5 because Rise already exists so this song really wasn't needed. Do they think we have the memory of an earthworm?) Overall, disappointing album. I'm hoping skillet hears the people that were disappointed by this album and take them into account when making their 2018/19 album.
Electric Joe they’re making a follow up to Unleashed this November. It’s going to be called Unleashed Beyond so idk if they change their sound or keep going in the electronic/pop direction. Let’s just hope it’s “Beyond” what Unleashed was 😂
If you didn't like rise for that reason, then you definitely won't like this one. This one is even more faith filled than rise. Really when I think about it the only album that didn't seem about their faith as much was Awake. Trust me if you don't those type of songs I would skip this one, if you can handle the faith filled lyrics then go ahead, but songs like Stars, out of hell (maybe), famous, watching for comets and quite a few more are very faith filled. So give it a listen. Personally that's what drew me to Skillet was they share the same faith as me.
Also it's nothing like Collide or Comatose (Their two best Albums IMO). More along the lines of Invincible and Alien youth...Just a heavier version of those two. Hope that helps you :)
SonicAnimations101 I think what drove me away more was how trite some of the writing on Rise was - examples being What I Believe, Fire and Fury, and My Religion. I kinda liked the melody of Salvation tbh, but some of the better tracks on Rise were Sick of It, Circus for a Psycho, and Not Gonna Die.

I am honestly surprised that Skillet is still around. I never liked the band and from listening to the new album, and yes I have heard the entire album, they still sound the same. There has been no evolution to the music and they still sound as commercial and soulless as ever. They sound like every band that was their contemporary. Breaking Benjamin, Three Days Grace, Seether etc... They may have shed the christian part of their music but it is still prevalent in the lyrics and over all tone.
What do Breaking Benjamin, Seether, and Three Days Grace all have in common? They were popular in the mainstream before Skillet, but weren't recording and touring actively before 2000, whereas Skillet had been doing so since 1995. Even Linkin Park pre-dates the bands you accused Skillet of sounding like because they went through 2 different monikers between 1996 and 2001 (Xero and Hybrid Theory) prior to sticking with LP by 2001. Prior to 95, John Cooper was in a lesser known band called Seraph during a couple of his years as a teenager. But, while you were probably still learning how to speak, Skillet released 5 studio albums, and a live album long before they tried their hand in the mainstream market. The other 3 bands I mentioned didn't even release their debut albums until 2002, which ironically was just over a year prior to Skillet signing with Atlantic Records' sister label Lava Records in early 2004. Over 95% of all bands that become a success in the mainstream, almost never get the big break they're looking for just 2 or 3 years into their career like the ones I mentioned at the start of this paragraph. The bands who do already have friends, or have friends of friends that work in the music biz willing to jumpstart their career. FYI, if you didn't already know, the drummer for Three Days Grace was once in a band back in the 90's with Trevor McNevan, whom has been the singer for Thousand Foot Krutch since 1997. Maybe you should quit accusing Christian bands like Skillet for copying bands that showed up years after them, and accept that some Christian bands don't need to be one of the 10 best in the world to have an influence on their mainstream counterparts. Just to re-iterate, before America's Got Talent and American Idol, if you as an artist or a band didn't have the " IT factor" following the first audition, you were either thrown on the back burner, or told to audition with another label because you weren't good enough for a contract. A band like Skillet would have been rejected by Lava Records had they come in sounding like they did originally back in 1996.
Here's how I rank Skillet's discography:
1. Awake
2. Comatose
3. Collide
4. Rise
5. Unleashed
6. Alien Youth
7. Invincible
8. Skillet
9. Hey You, I Love Your Soul
I been a fan of Skillet since 2010 they're still going strong, the new style change makes me keep an open mind. But the Awake album will still be the thing I remember them for.
dude Awake fucking sucked. Comatose and Colide are 10 times better albums
+SeekerMissile dude its his opinion lol
Same, Awake was the first album I ever heard by them, I got introduced to them through the WinterJam tour they did with TobyMac🤘🏼
For me the apex of Skillet are Comatose and Collide, everything before that was interesting but not as powerful IMO, and Awake (the only album I've listened to since) just feels like they've lost a step. I'm glad they're getting new fans nowadays, but their more recent content just isn't for me to be honest
Agreed.
The climax for me is Collide, before that is basically building up to the climax and everything is just downhill after Collide
invincible was ok then I heard stars and it felt weird hearing it and I thought oh no skillet has tone down that is till I heard undefeated resistance and burn it down and that renewed my faith in the band that they were still hard and edgy just the way I like it but that's just me

I like Collide more but yeah.
branm25 Skillet will never make a better album then Comatose. Comatose is the best album

It would be awesome if you would give your thoughts on Mudvayne-L.D 50.
I can't stand the way the electronic elements took over the band's sound on the first two singles, but Back from the Dead sounds pretty good. I think I'll check out the album.
It is a great way that shows that electronic elements don't have to take over. The album has an even mix of everything honestly.
Listen to I Want To Live too, reminds me of their more symphonic older stuff like comatose and rebirthing
Now if you want to listen to good electronic Skillet music, just listen to the Alien Youth album
Best album of the year
I love Skillet, but what the fuck is up with 'Feel Invincible'?
Idk you find out lol
I came straight here after listening to the album. Good review ^^
I appreciate how you treat bands equally regardless of whether they're Christian, death metal, etc.
How could you not talk about undefeated ?
This album is amazing, and so is Skillet as a whole. Im seeing them live with Korn and Stone Sour yassssssss
I wish the riff in your intro was in a real song.
That shit rocks!
All thanks to Skitch! He also did the theme for the Nostalgia Critic.
+Rocked How much does it cost for him to make an intro, I'm very interested!
If you hit him up on Twitter I'm sure you guys can work something out. @skitchmusic

This is an ok album, but Rise and Awake will always be my favourites from them

@@shadowsoul1695 Unleashed Beyond is basically just a re-release of Unleashed
The tenth album will be out sometime this year
Liked the album, hated "famous" though.
They have NINE ALBUMS!!?!?? I thought they had like 3
Yeah, they've been around since 1996. John's the only one remaining from the original trio.
It's actually 10
Wow. I thought Skillet was around since like 2005 or something.
+Nate Coulter ya I thought so too until I looked at their older albums like invincible and hey you I love your soul
When I first found this band, I thought Invincible was the debut album
Rise was mostly hit or miss (can't stand those fucking preachy worship songs), I'm not sure if I want to buy this album.
The closest you get to preachy is Stars. If you like Skillet's more powerful stuff you'll probably like this album.
Ctxx24 the Cringe Lord I'll check it out then. Bear in mind, my favorite of their albums is Collide lol
If you didn't like rise for that reason, then you definitely won't like this one. This one is even more faith filled than rise. Another solid album from a solid band, but I dunno, the lead vocals just sound very samey to me after a while.
I should use them for anime opening themes.
I hate Stars! I mean, how did they go from Forsaken to Stars? I don't mind Watching For Comets.
Stars is about Jesus so that's why they made it
It's shitty and bland nevertheless
Why do I feel like I'm the only person to love this album

They never shred the Christian part in their music. It's always been about their faith. And John says they're still a Christian band.
They've always been a Christian band and they always will be

I think I’ll pass on christian evangelirock
Skillet are the Christian equivalents to early Linkin Park
Skillet has to be the worst band name since Death Cab For Cutie.
Aren't you forgetting Garbage?
John Cooper has said multiple times that he regrets the band name.
+Roddor then why hasn't he changed it? LOL!
Because it's so recognisable (plus with a different name, the Panhead name for their fanbase wouldn't work as well)
Tim Mackie good point
This album is amazing :D
This album is trash
And so is the band
+Jarred Dean their live performances are fantastic tho
Their not trash
Jarred Dean and Rockin Jonathan you guys are such arrogants!
Joseph Frye what
Nothing beats the christian butt rock!! Woo
