    Barbra's home is so ordinary, scaled down to normal living. Well, not ordinary, it is so cozy with the fireplace and homemade items. As she said, enough space so they can clean it themselves. Gardening, walking, biking and doing it away from the public eye. How wonderful. Barbra is so down to earth as she talks about her worries, insecurities and fears. She strives for perfection but who doesn't when you are at the helm. A man would be called "strict" and she "hard to work with". Give me a break. She has faced this criticism all of her career and she is doing well. Congratulations Barbra.

      We toured the ranch during the short time it was open to the public (for a walking tour and lunch). The FIVE homes were indeed cozy and surprisingly small, but anything but ordinary. Although I wasn't crazy about the them all being different styles, it was impressive the way Jon meshed the different landscapes and grounds all together. But I did see why it never sold; because it was a weird hodgepodge.

    • @Mike-fp5rc
      @Mike-fp5rc 2 года назад +2

      Yes, it was a hodgepodge. From a 1930's style black/red/grey/pink Art Deco to a Mediterranean home with a "peach" color scheme, to then a structure that looked like something out of The Hobbit but decorated in a "Southwest" style. It looked like they bought 5 completely different style homes in a neighborhood, but just connected them with paths and landscape .. and of course that's exactly what they did. More than anything else, it was VERY 1970's with tons of macrame' and wicker with the color schemes of the 70's, harvest gold, avocado, and burnt orange. We immediately thought "who would buy this?" (for $150M), and of course no one did. That's why they ended up donating it (for the tax write off). But that wasn't important; what "the ranch" really did was gave Barbra the opportunity to cut her teeth on building, designing, and decorating. From the looks of her current masterpiece, it paid off.

      @@Mike-fp5rc - I's also read, many years ago, that she 'donated' it to the state of California. But recently, I read that someone DID buy it. And then they re-sold it. And then all the homes were demolished, and someone built that enormous monstrosity, which has been labeled as 'the most expensive home in the country". $500 million!!!!
      But no ne would buy it. So it was reduced in price and now I'm not sure who owns it. So sad that Barbra's history was torn down. But Barbra's place in Malibu is absolutely beautiful, and I'm sure she's glad to be there now.

    Peters was the worst thing that ever happened to Streisand. Her career was meteoric up to the mid-70s, with a run of films that was an awesome display of versatility - two or three of the greatest comedy performances of all time (Funny Girl, What's Up Doc? and The Owl and the Pussycat), a great dramatic turn in The Way We Were, a subtle, realistic (and under-rated) performance in Up The Sandbox, and the unparalleled musical performances in Funny Girl, Dolly & Clear Day. Nobody else has ever really equalled that display of talent. If she'd continued in that vein she'd now be considered alongside Streep as an actress. But then it all went to crap with Peters (aided by Sue Mengers), pushing her into projects for the money, and for his own advancement. A Star is Born was hugely successful (and she's good in it), but it was also a vanity project that cheapened her image, damn nearly ruined her reputation (thanks to battles with director Frank Pierson that were largely provoked by Peters). That was followed by The Main Event, a lame attempt to re-capture the magic of What's Up Doc? Then All Night Long, which she did purely for a huge payday and as a favour to Mengers. Her career recovered somewhat when she ditched Peters (and Mengers) and directed Yentl. But she never regained the momentum or the goodwill she had in the early 70s. Peters, of course, successfully launched himself as a Hollywood mogul off his association with Streisand then went a demented power spree that ended in bitterness and recriminations all around. Not to mention multiple allegations of sexual assault and several massive payouts. He was Weinstein before Weinstein. An utter creep.

A Star is Born made her appealing to a young audience and she finally became a rich mega star. Barbra was with Jon Peters for almost 10 years for a reason. He was gorgeous, aggressive, positive and helped her do what she wanted to do, both professionally and personally. She needed a man to help Produce ASIB, her movie making schooling, before she took on 'Yentl' a movie she had in her head since 1968. I am glad they parted because he really was a Hustler and wanted to sign Barbra to crazy movie and singing contracts. He wanted to exploit Barbra while coking it up with Peter Gruber. Streisand was the biggest movie and recording star on the planet during this time, and you can see the pressure and the effect that it was having on her. Evergreen was already #1 before the movie even came out, and when A Star i Born opened on Christmas Day, and it was a blockbuster of mammoth proportions (even though the critics ripped it apart). I agreed with the critics and never considered this as one of Barbra's greatest acting moments and it was obvious that KK was impaired out of his gourd throughout the entire movie.
