So, when measuring the bow length you don't follow the contour of the limbs? You just go from string groove to string groove? I'm seeing conflicting information on this with different people.
Thanks for this. My step father gave me his old bow and was trying to figure out how to order a string for it. Now I know. I’ll be placing an order soon.
I've been using Shatterproof strings for a few years now. They are honestly the best ! I cant recommend them enough. Also great customer service ! 10/10
@@ShatterproofArchery That is written in AMO standard. You can find it online if you google search it as "AMO standard". I now in quick search only could find version from year 1987 but I also have a newer standard version from year 2000 on my PC. It says the same thing about string being 3"shorter but there are some changes in what tension string length should be measured. I wrote a longer reply few minutes before but it looks like that comment was blocked/deleted because I put link to AMO standard download in that comment. Maybe it will show up later.
I’m building a bow based on your $15 bow build video. I’m also learning to make Flemish twist strings. My question is: after I make a string, it coils all around itself in a tangle. When it’s on the bow, it’s fine. What can I do to prevent my strings from acting like an unruly coil spring and more like a piece of string?
String lenght of course depends on the amount of twists. A new string from the stringmaker probably will have less twist (e.g. 15 turns) than my already used one (e.g. 40 turns). So 68" length is not the same as 68". How to handle this by ordering a string?
Hi, I bought a PSE GMX with no string, I did the calculatuons that you show on the video, but as soon as I do string the bow, the string gets loose, in some way is loosing the tension once is string. What do you recommend me to do?
So I bought a Bear recurve bow from a junk store and it has a string that measures 59 1/2" using your method, but the AMO on the bow says 66; and if I subtract the 4" as in the video that's 62". So now what? Thank you!
I have KAP Challenger Spirit recurve bow it's says Prostyle 24" length 68-28inchs weight 64-32lbs what size string do I need I am confused please help.
I honestly don't understand the AMO thing. I am looking to buy a 2nd hand bow wooden horse bow what is a 48" in length. Is the AMO equivalent to the length? I'm shooting recurve bows since 3 years and never came across the term AMO 😅
That would give you a good starting point, but you’re replacing your string due to excessive age are breaking and strands. All of which, including just normally use because your bow string to stretch. So if you’re making a string identical to those measurements from your old recurve string, you better have room to put a lot of twist because it’s gonna be too long. That’s just facts Based on being in the archery business for 55 years.
That is a great point! Measuring your old string only works if 1) the old string is set at the correct brace height for your bow and 2) the string you get from shatterproof archery is prestretched (which it will be). If both these are true then your new string should match the brace height of the old and the beauty of flemish twist strings is that if it is off a little you can twist it up or untwist it to get it perfect:)
Sorry but your first method is 100% WRONG. If someone needs a new string that means the string they are measuring is old and stretched out. If you send them one that is the length of an old stretched string, then when it breaks in it will be way too long and will suffer from low brace height. NEVER ago by the length of an old string. AMO only.

One more thing every string I had made will stretch over time. So if the new string is slight long you can twist it up to lengthen the brace height. But you do need to get a string that gets you in the target area of your expected BH. You do need to know the best BH for you , your bow, your arrow and such. I have Take down bows a Bear and Martin Hatfield , each one of these bow BH are very different fwiw. The bear loves 8.25" the Hatfield loves 7.5" , I also have 29" draw & shooting aluminum shafts that are 31" long.
BS The only way to get the exactly right string for your bow AND you AND your arrow is take control and make them yourself. No ifs. No buts. Make your own. Why would you trust it to anyone else?
I just got a garage sale bow without a string, thankfully it had the AMO listed. Love your videos man!

Kramer. I have two of your strings with tens of thousands of arrows on each. They are amazing with service to match.
Thanks so much Brad!
Awesome! I've bought atleast a 6 strings from you and they're alway's top notch 👍

Nice. Curious...a bow I'm interested in topArchery recurve..., 62 inch but string is 59...so 3 inch difference Not 4. ?
Interesting, I always thought you measure the belly of the bow following all the contours to get AMO length.
By AMO standard string length has to be 3" shorter for ALL bows. It doesn't say anything about being shorter by 3,5" or 4" for different bow designs.
That is so interesting! Thank you for sharing, can you send me where you got that from? I would love to reference it.

Awesome video brother! To the point. Thank you!
Cannot find Info on how many string strands per non flemished string, and strand count per bow draw weight. Thanks.
Good video i have two string from you and I'll be doing more business with you thanks
As a bowyer myself I can say that string length can be incredibly frustrating. Thanks for the insight!
I ordered a bow string at 43inch , but received 42 inches. Is it ok to use it on my bow ?

How long do you typically make your bow

If the bow is 68" long you will want a 64" string
So no consistency here either then as other standards say subtract 3 inches for a recurve.
Thankyou
I honestly don't understand the AMO thing.

For a horse bow it is a little tougher. I would suggest using paracord or if you have a previous bowstring and measuring that.
🎉🎉❤❤

That's when your quiver is too small to carry all your ammo...

Actually the first method is the best method. The key is to make sure the bow is at its correct brace before measuring.
