"It's lovely for people to touch me for luck...or lay hands or them...or listen to their confessions..." Tom Baker is a little nuts but I fucking love that man!
he ironic thing is that Tom was a Catholic monk after he left the army, and decided he wanted to be an actor...
Im pretty sure he walked off a building site into acting, he was a bricky.
The Monk thing was really early on; he was a young teenager when he entered the Monastery (can you imagine going through puberty and taking a vow of celibacy at the same time!?) and was there until his early 20s. Then he did his national service and took up acting during that time. The building work was his day job to support his (at the time not very lucrative) acting career.
I think he was implying he's Jesus xD
@@Fireglo That's what I thought! I think he's just having fun bc he's said in an interview fans see him as a god.
What a nice man he is. I had heard in a documentary a few years back covering the history of the show, that Tom was probably the most despondent of all that had played the doctor and then had to leave. It was reported that after his last scene, he left the stage with tears in his eyes and didn't say one word. How sad it would be to have such a big part of yourself, your identity and soul taken away from you. You will always be MY doctor Tom. Got my love of trench coats, scarves and hats from you. : )
I have one of his scarves on my bedroom wall, along with some other things of his.
😀👍💖
@@marystone860 😀👍💖
jime6688 I heard after Tom’s last day on set back in 1981, he didn’t say goodbye to anyone and there wasn’t a big party or anything. He simply finished his work and went to the pub and had a drink and went home. And that was it
Austin Oetken some of what you had heard could’ve been invented (made-up)
When I heard Baker's voice on the episode I began to cry. I am a 41 year old male.
When i heard it, I was like "Wait, i know that voi- NOOOOOOOO!!!!! Really? After all that awesomeness and THIS???" I squirmed~~~~
Also, you're still awesome for crying, it shows love and compassionate.
I jumped in my seat... when I saw it in the theater on monday a purposeful sigh and hush went through the crowd
I almost choked!
I am also a 40 year old male and when i heard his voice i think my neigbors heard me 4 houses away he is the doctor i grew up on loved him wish he could have had more of a role in the episode think they should have had that girl give him back his scarf
I cried too. And I'm a 45 year old man.
What was so great about Tom Baker is how he brought to the role that sense of combined eccentricity and madness. The voice, the wild hair, the staring eyes, etc. You were never quite sure whether his Doctor was a genius or borderline madman, and he was fascinating to watch because of that.
The two things are not mutually exclusive.
For so many people as they get older, their voices change... His is still exactly the same :). I love that voice :D.
Absolutely! And I didn't know he was going to be in that episode, but when that rich, beautiful voice spoke, I knew immediately who it was.
Good thing he didn't smoke.
christhefishhunter He did smoke, like most people in those days. However, he was apparently careful not to smoke in public where kids might see him. I don't know whether he has smoked since those days.
Yes, I heard that. That says something good about him. :-)
Matt Maloney
He said he stopped smoking in order to be able to laugh again without coughing. He is now smoke-free. And laughing a lot more :)
When he appeared in Day of the Doctor, just about everyone in the theatre went ballistic! That episode was fan service at it's finest
Tom Baker just had to appear in the special... He's one of the greatest doctors of them all!
I arrived at my Grans house when this was on. She shushed us all when we turned up to listen to Tom.
Mum says she had a huge crush on him back then and my grandpa got super jealous XD My Gran was the super fan. 😂
I'm crushing on Tom's Doctor today when I watch him on DVD! Think his Doctor was definitely sexy.
Tom, may you live to be 2,000. The day you pass will be one of the saddest.
Tom Baker has such a powerful voice.
Tom Baker was my first Doctor. He is the best of the classic doctors
***** Its a matter of opinion, but when it all comes down to it, he's the same man in all of his incarnations, each of them just has their ups and downs. Personally, my favourite Doctor is David Tennant, but he is closely followed by Matt Smith, Tom Baker, and Patrick Troughton.
+Proton1 I have been watching Tom's episodes recently and Tom's Doctor definitely wasn't 1 dimensional or happy all the time. His Doctor may have literally been as dark or darker at times then any other Doctor. If you watch episodes like "Seeds Of Doom', "Robots Of Death'", "Mask Of Mandragora" (where he let's some innocent party goers die in order to save everybody from the villian) he not only yells at the bad guys but his own companions. In Tom's last season especially everybody says Tom was much more brooding and had a darker feel to his Doctor. That is one thing I have noticed, now that I have been watching his episodes, is that the 4th Doctor could deceptively complex. God bless.😀
+Merganman4 Sorry you didn't care for the interview with Tom.
Hey!!! Mine too!
Just come across this interview. I fell in love with Tom Baker the minute he came on the screen. I was 7 years old. That's never changed and at 53 I still think he was and will always be the best Doctor. I had the privilege of meeting him when I was 18. He was in Glasgow doing a play. Thete is always a high risk of disappointment when you meet your hero. This couldn't have been further from the truth meeting Tom. Not only was he so nice in person he also sent me a couple of hand written letters and signed photos. I even got a thank you note for the whisky I gave him. He will always be my number one.
Still the most charismatic and enigmatic actor to play the Doctor
Tom keeps feeding Lizo all these golden quips, with a glint in his eye, but Lizo doesn't pick up on them at all!
Glad to know iam not the only one that wept when he appeared on screen
softsteel6 I felt that loving tinge also... Seeing my first doctor on the screen like this all these years later.. Very spacial.. For a very special man.
He's got a great head of hair for a man in his 80's.
Offcourse Time lord biology :)
79 at that point but who’s counting… 😉
The only thing missing from this interview is David Tennant walking by, hands in his pockets and wearing the Fourth Doctor costume.
I was thinking Tom's suit in this interview looked an awful lot like the 10th Doctor's! Even the shirt and tie are similar! David in the 4th Doctor's garb would look terribly odd though, I think. xD
Tom has to have one of the best and most recognisable voices ever!
I always wonder what the younger WHO fans even KNOW about Tom Baker. We Americans really embraced Tom's Doctor, and in fact, didn't get to see a whole lot of the other actors' as often. So I think for Americans my age, Tom is indeed, THE DOCTOR!
When he left the show to be replaced by Peter Davison, I was STUNNED. When I saw him in " Day of the Doctor ", I got a happy pleasant glow.
The younger fans have about 50 years of catching up to do !
Daniel Appleton I envy them.
borgduck 50 years - God, I feel older than dirt..... :) & I'm only in my 50's.
Daniel Appleton Well, look at Capaldi. ;)
Tom Baker is the only person I could ever allow referring to 'The Doctor' as 'Doctor Who'.
He is The Doctor, so let the man pronounce his own name the way he wants.
Do you know, I didn’t even notice it 😆😆 He’s the man, it’s whatever he says
I know this is a six year old comment but during the classic series the role was credited as "doctor who," it's a completely valid thing to call the character. Especially for Tom who was credited as that lol
@@wnyduchess GIRL I WAS 14 WHEN I WROTE THAT LMFAO
@@lh4736 lmaoooo 😭
Always beloved. Everyone who remembers his portrayal loves it and him and delights in his sense of wonder and fun. Thanks to Tom for making me a who fan. He was my first Doctor
I'm so glad he decided to be in the 50th. An absolute joy for fans such as my self. Especially since he and Jon Pertwee were my childhood Doctors.
Tom Baker is an absolute star. I saw him in Sheffield in Arsenic and Old Lace. I can highly recommend his autobiography, brilliant and funny, what a guy!
OMG!!, he has a autobiography! Where can I get one?
he should have have offered Matt a Jelly baby in the 50th episode at the end
I thought that, too! It would have been the perfect touch!
Hendo56 I was hoping he would just leave the bag of jelly babies on the seat, for Matt's Doctor to find a few seconds later...
I think that would've been a bit too much. The jelly babies are well remembered but they weren't in many of his stories overall - they don't define his doctor.
Other sweet jellied treats are available
@@thejfoshow1320 Too bad Tom's original jelly babies were not available in the US...
Tom was my first Doctor. Long before DVDs, and the internet, I got a magazine in the mail, not sure which one, but they featured an article about Doctor Who with a pic of John Pertwee, and I was like "THAT'S not The Doctor!" All I knew was Tom Baker. MY whole entire world opened up for me that day! I love all of them for different reasons, but Tom will always be my first Doctor, and always my favorite of the classic era.
as an American, I see Tom Baker as the William Shatner of Great Britain!
Not in a million of years
Shatner is Canadian
Only difference is... Tom didn't ice his wife
Tom didn't go bananas.
@@lauraboiocchi4666because he’s always been bananas
He has the most awesome voice.
We love you here in the states Tom. You did a brilliant job as the Doctor. You are the best Doctor EVER!!!! Please come to the west coast for something.
You can tell how sad he is that he's no longer the centre of attention. He basks in the memory of the past glory, and misses the spotlight. At first i thought he may not be humble, but it's just what happens with age, you get nostalgic, and he remains one of my favourite doctors despite, and because of this
Tom Baker is a bit of an egotist but I think he's mellowed with age. Occasionally, that egotistical streak does reemerge though, like when he complained that Matt Smith was the only person who said hello to him in Day of the Doctor.
When I saw him in the 50th anniversary special - Actually, when I heard that rich, booming voice - There was this sense of contentment followed by joy. Because his Doctor was the 1st to be broadcast on U.S. airwaves.
Me and my partner watched it live in Australia and I have been a fan for over 30 years. Matt is the first Doctor my partner has seen regen to regen and when Tom came on I started bawling my eyes out.
Happy tears, mind. But my poor partner had to deal with me having a cry at 7.30am on a sunday morning!
charliequinification When I heard that resounding voice, I think my jaw dropped, hit the floor & bounced. Then this warm glow went through my heart & mind, & I smiled. Matt Smith's time as the Doctor was seasoned LIBERALLY with call - backs to " classic " Who. & this moment with Tom Baker was perhaps the BEST !
incorrect - Jon Pertwee - 3rd Doctor was broadcast before Tom's 4th in the US
squarehopper Not where I lived.
But Pertwee's episodes were not broadcast thru out the U.S. and unfortunately the show did not catch on with U.S. audiences, on PBS nationally, until they started airing Tom's episodes. The rest, they say, is history.
Lol, if Tom Baker himself calls himself, "Doctor Who," then both The Doctor and Doctor Who are correct… Imagine how Classic Whovians feel, "OMG HE'S DOCTOR WHO NOT JUST THE DOCTOR!" ;)
William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Christopher Eccleston, were all named in the credits as "Doctor Who" in their time in the TARDIS - it wasn't til Peter Davison took over the credits said "The Doctor." (geek alert)
+Stephen Cole it's just the credits though and he's never called like that in the actual episode
The Doctor will never ever be called Doctor Who. The title of the show is a question and not his name.
But the Peter Cushing Dr Who movies, the character's name was Dr Who ;)
Intresting fact: I watched a youtube video called: Top 10 Unproduced Episodes of Doctor Who. And in one of them, apparently. Tom Baker went back to the BBC studios in the 90's and asked for the role of the Doctor Back, it would be so nice if he came back :c.
He always might for a Christmas special. One can hope.
You can tell how long and crazy his life was. the way he delivered that line "who...knows..." was pretty sad because you saw how much crazier and sorrow he has gotten over his years. but good to know that he seemed at peace. (atleast thats how i saw it). this was brilliant. gave me chills and made me choke up at the same time.
Tom did apologize after Dr Who to a lot of people ha had offended professionally over the years...
Oh dear. Perhaps the most profound insight on the BBC that day. Fan love is better than real love. It never grows stale. And no-one even noticed.
I'm 40, Tom Baker was my first Doctor. I used to watch him in America on our local PBS station.
Nearly 23, and he was my first Doctor too--I saw one episode of the new series, didn't like it, and someone said "Try this old one...GENESIS OF THE DALEKS..you might like it more, and the Doctor there is pretty legendary." Understatement of the century. :D So more than 30 years after he gave up the role, Tom Baker was MY Doctor...and the one who got me to love all the others, too. :)
Excellent!
Me too, and I'm 37!
"try standing with a dalek 6 feet away from you" I wake up to a full size Dalek sitting next to my bed every morning literally not even 1 foot away...silly reporters :P
irham yusof
That would make me throw up from terror the first time that went off..
DW2012 well aren't you special
Did you build it or buy it? If you built it, did you put up a DIY somewhere online, like on Instructables? I'm sure many of us would be interested in the link.
God damn it Luke.
Do you *enjoy* terror?
Neeeeeeeeeeeeeerd.
lol
if this goes on for a century, some of us will be 80 odd :'( I I physically cried
I'll be 50-60
That hairstyle makes him look a bit like Jon Pertwee. I remember him comparing hairstyles (though he probably meant bodies) in The Brain of Morbius. Also despite loving it so much he wasn't in any major hurry to come back to it for the twentieth anniversary special. I wonder if he regrets that decision now.
floooooooooooooooood he said recantly he did
I love how he was appreciative of his role as the Doctor. Not taking it for granted one bit. Good man!
I love how in the run-up he just so casually said oh yeah I’m in it too and everybody just kinda dismissed it like “yeah I guess they’re gonna have a scene with archive footage or voiceovers or something” and we got that scene and then something more.
What I've always loved about Tom is that you always get the real him. He's doesn't try to put on any act. He says it exactly how he sees it.
Stay young Tom. His speaking voice hasn't changed a bit. Take care Doctor 4
Even now (2024) whenever I rewatch the curator scene I tear up when I hear his voice. He was, is and always will be my Doctor.
I'm 20 and my first Doctor was Paul McGann (and from that movie I got nightmares about the Master being 4 when I saw it live but so totally worth it). Then my dad produced the videos he had. I loved those to bits and then they restarted the series and nobody in my class knew why I was so excited.
I am pretty sure that me and my brother are proof that geeks breed geeks (or one geek and my poor suffering mother - must be a dominant gene).
A family of geeks is a happy family... well it is if you're one of the geeks :-D
Just look at his tie. The Doctor is cosplaying himself.
Reverse of what David Tennant had as a child because he had a forth doctor scarf.
I used to watch his episodes on PBS when i was little. Im 20 years old, and with all the doctors now, he's still the doctor in my heart. Always and forever my Doctor
yeah its just i am glad he still feels like he can be a part of doctor who and he really seems like he regrets not being in the 5 doctors.
That gives me a bit of hope that Eccleston might come round and do the same, he unfortunately seems to have turned his back on Doctor Who, would be great too see him return in a Nu Who 5 Doctors Special with David Tennant, Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi and Paul McGann
So love Tom Bakers voice. He was my first crush as a kid. I just recently had a famous artist here in Australia paint a portrait of him. I would love to send it to him, but no idea where to send it. He will always be my favourite!
Look at his official website. I believe he has an address to receive fan mail.
thank you :)
Probably wont receive it tho being a painting
He still has that marvelous voice!
The greatest DOCTOR, the first DOCTOR episode I saw TOM was laying on the ground losing his old grey image. Sat up and took the reigns. Perfect timing.
I will never forget when The Doctor was Tom
I get the distinct impression he was taking the piss through this whole interview, lol.
Tom Baker? Taking the piss? Surely not.
Tom Baker will always be my favorite Doctor
i think he took a quick visit to number 10 for the suit he is without doubt my favourite of the classics and i watch he episodes over and over again i have the majority of them on DVD he is amazing
this man will always be an Icon to me...
Tom Baker was my Doctor.
I love all the other ones up to the current one.
still good to hear his occasional voice over work. instantly recognisable 😉
Hapkido 82 have you listened to his audios? he still plays the doctor on the big finnish audios.
Not many men through history can carry their Gravitas through to their twilight years... but then there's Tom.
Every thing else is a footnote.
Tom will never change :) love him!
Tom Baker is a legend, whom I happily met in 1976. He even gave me his autograph which I still have. It was a very simple autograph. No large squiggles.
Tom baker, thank you so much!!!!
Tom Baker was my first Dr. in the U.S. back in the late 70’s or early 80’s and he has always been my favorite.
I was a part of the worldwide simulcast viewing from North Hollywood, Calif USA !!
Tom Baker will always be my Doctor, he is the only time lord i would always honor as a great actor. my Hero........
Tom Baker is a Awesome Doctor
He is the best Doctor to date, even though he was the Doctor 21 years before I was born.
Lovely interview!
I can actually imagine Tom Baker performing baptisms.
he was a monk. a crisis of faith lead him into acting. i met him once, an amazingly deep man.
raverdeath100
I'm pleased he can humour it.
Care for a jelly baby?
Tom Baker as the 4th Doctor........THE BEST!!!!!
I totally agree! Even though I respect the other actors who have played the role, and like some of there interpretations, Tom Baker nailed the character of the Doctor soooooooo perfectly. He was the most natural and believable in the part for me. Plus he had the right balance of alieness, charm, wit, humor, sex appeal and physicalness to make me never think I was watching an actor in the role. Your awesome Tom and some of us have not forgotten your love and respect for the character of the Doctor and your kindness towards the fans. Your a class act all the way Tom.
+Stefano Pavone I am one one of those rare fans who actually doasn't totally dislike Sylvester. Thought he had some interesting moments. I do love though how well Tom brought out the alieness of the Doctor but showed the influence humans had on him. I also felt a wonderful complexity to Tom's Doctor. He could be funny, charming, witty and cheeky one moment and then be really angry (even snapping at his own companions at times), moody, morbid and slightly depressed feeling (his final season was a great example of that). Tom also had a slightly flirtatious feel with a couple of his companions. But anyway that's only my opinion. God bless.😀
well said!
Yes please!
Lovely.. God bless you tom Baker.. My doctor, my first doctor, one of my doctors.. Class act.. A legend and fantastic actor.. I loved him in the amicus movies also. Brilliant..amazing man
HAS ANY NOTICED THAT TOM BAKER'S CURATOR ENTRANCE (THE FOURTH DOCTOR) CAUSES A SHOCKED, "FORTH WALL" LOOK (MATT SMITH'S) LOOKING DIRECT AT THE CAMERA!
Frank Skinner (Mummy on the Orient Express!) once said that he had outlived anyone whose death he would cry about. Then added 'except Tom Baker'..
Tom's not my Doctor - that was Peter Davison - but he was still THE Doctor (not sure how many later generations that calculation works for). When that booming, sonorous voice echoed towards the end of Day of the Doctor...
"You know, I think you might..."
Its such a part of yourself, being the Doctor. You can see it when they speak of the role.
I love his voice
The Voice of God
You are sooooooo damm right about that!!!!!!
The very first episode of Dr.Who THAT i saw WAS his first episode about the giant robot and i WAS immediately hooked!!!!!!!!!!!!! He gave the show his own comic stamp that No one has equaled since!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks MR Baker for ALL your years of inspiration as DR. WHO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i'm not 40, but Tom Baker was my 1st doctor. my grandma made me watch the reruns when i was a wee bit...
He was a childhood hero of mine.
There were two actors to play the Doctor that were not just playing, but really WERE the Doctor. And that were William Hartnell and Tom Baker. Troughton, Pertwee, they played excellent, too, but for them it was just a role.
"Would you like a Jelly baby?"
Tom Baker remains an international treasure 🧣
Still my Doctor.
It's so weird... Tom Baker is so old now and yet he's still very tall! It's incredible!
What a marvelous laugh from a marvelous man.
Tom has the most awesome voice.
His sublime humour flies straight over the head of this oblivious reporter.
I just wish Sarah Jane Smith was still alive because she would've loved this since she was there during the classic who and new who.
Love that he mentioned big finish!
I want to sleep in a bed made of Tom's voice
can never forget tom baker
The "Curator" is The Doctor. Not many people noticed that. I don't see how they couldn't, he says so himself.
I love him even more now. ^^
Definitely my 2nd favorite doctor(top spot goes to Pertwee).
What a voice, what an actor.
Every time they have an anniversary it's the same age I turn that year being born the year it began broadcasting. Tom baker was my Doctor, and I stopped watching after he went until the reboot. I still hear that voice and go back in time.
Total genius & the greatest Doctor of them all ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Well, actually it was five doctors that appeared in the special if you include Peter Capaldi and Tom Baker with their cameo appearances in it....
Tom Baker didn't play the Doctor, he is the Doctor.
He is just brilliant.
God I bloody LOVE this show. Always Saturn night Doctor Who... Tom Baker my first Doctor... awesome man.
I love them all. All.
No one will convince me that Jodie W, because of gender, has been vilified disgustingly.
Ffs... americans can deal with I expect because they have star Trek with black, women and asian captains and they are welcomed.. shame on us.
53 years... 21st century... just enjoy it. I love her
What a voice .
