I live for Colin's little smile when Tom said nobody has failed at being the Doctor. It must have meant something for him, who received criticism like no other Doctor, that the one considered the greatest Doctor believes that.
If you look at Colin's big finish work he's a really great doctor it's such a shame his TV era didn't let him shine in the same way.
@@darylgilham6821 I agree. I was enlightened for Collins passion for who the doctor actually #u@king is
He basically resurrected William hartnell into his personality. And that's what everyone hated.
@@darylgilham6821 I personally think Big Finish mellowed his Doctor out a bit too much.
@@minicle426 That's fair. I didn't mind personally.
@@darylgilham6821
Honestly, I'd even dare say that Big Finish's Colin is even better than TV Tom Baker
I love how whenever Tom Baker speaks in his booming voice, everyone else falls silent to listen to each and every poetic word that is thrown out of his mouth. He is truly the greatest Doctor.
He truly is.

he isnt even really the doctor since he decided for like 20 years he didnt want to be associated with the character and completely shat on his co stars like jon pertwee and appeared in no conventions, didnt even come to the charity events so if he is the doctor he is the worst doctor by far
@@kamikazilucas He was an excellent Doctor, one of the best, but as a person, yeh... the crapping on Jon Pertwee thing, and I get the impression he's not an easy person to work with (I also suspect Peter Davison isn't too fond of him). But I guess the actor has to be regarded separately from the character. I mean, Sylvester played my least favourite Doctor, but he's my favourite out of them as a real person (I mean, just look at what he does when Tom talks about a Doctor with a hump).
Colin- "Let me say the words, David Tennant"
Crowd- cheers
Sylvester "Look his father-in-law's right here!"
Their self-awareness is unmatched
I think they should put Tom Baker in charge of directing a few episodes. His ideas would be pretty interesting. Especially the Doctor with the hump.
I would love that. Haha
Yeah thats the worst idea ever ol Tom is too bonkers

No one is ready for Tom Baker’s ideas to hit the screen 😂😂
@@hillsjason1 one word: Scratchman
All their comments are perfect! Tom Baker's observation that nobody has ever failed at it is really interesting, but he's right... and can I see Colin Baker reacting to that comment smiling, or is it just me?
colin baker definitely didn't fail but i looked at him when tom said that because i wanted to see his reaction due to the fact that a lot of people did consider his doctor a failure.
*****
Yep, that's what I was thinking, too. :)
***** Its hard to tell if his face is more of "I don't know about that" or even a "thank you" in some way from Colin in regards to Tom statement. In all honesty, Tom was right, the actors playing the Doctor never failed. It was the BBC and the below par writing that failed Doctor Who.
Terrell Allen yeah. like the brilliant decision to have colin baker attempt to murder his companion right after he regenerates.
I think the problem with that was they didn't follow through with the idea enough. The idea that his regeneration was unstable would have been fine but the stories didn't do anything with it. I like the passion he has, he pulls off that coat better than anyone ever could and he had a lot of passion for justice which is what Colin said summarized his Doctor. That could have been what his Doctor was about.
OMG I love Colin xD "
A lot of young girls watch Doctor Who because of, let me say it, DAVID TENNANT"
(cue Fangirls screaming)
Oh man...Touche Colin xD
xDD
Young girls?
Fickle fangirls. :P
It's kinda sad how the first three doctors couldn't see or even know doctor who would have a 50th anniversary.
I wonder if Peter Cushing or Richard Hurndall would have been asked to participate, if they were still around, given that Cushing's 2 film appearances aren't considered canon, and Hurndall was essentially playing Hartnell playing the Doctor?
It's the kind of thing that makes me want to build a time machine, pack a portable dvd player (and a bunch of batteries), all the renewed episodes, travel to the past and show them.
zoppie Hurndall appeared in only one story, whereas Cushing... Well, considering this is about the canon show rather than his own Dr Who films, I hardly think he would've been asked either.
Hartnell, Troughton, and Pertwee are dead.... long since dead....
boylego1 We realize this...
I love that Toms voice just carries throughout the entire room and echos everywhere. That man speaks, and you just know who he is. Hes the Doctor. You can hear it in him. See it in him. Amazing, just simply amazing.
I love how Tom said "no one's really failed at being doctor who" and Colin Baker smiled a bit. I don't feel Colin was bad. None of them were, as Tom said. I would prefer to watch one of Tom's over Colin's though
I love that smile. It was so heart warming to see Colin's reaction to earning some much needed appreciation.
in my opinion and if i remember it right colin baker was treated shoddily by the bbc, i did not mind his version of the doctor but i hated his costume.
@@brucewayne7838 Interestingly, my little sis loved Colin's costume, and I even made one for her for Halloween. She was devastated when it finally fell apart after about four years. Heh, I still have a box full of every shade of plaid in my closet :P
I hated Colin when he first started, but I loved him by the end of his run.
@@AndyGilleandwhat is this, doctor who?
Wow, it's incredibly how sharp Tom is. I remember seeing interviews in the 70's and 80's, and he gives the same responses now that he did back then. His mind hasn't deteriorated one bit!

This is something the fans whining about Peter Capaldi's age should think about. The First Doctor was an old man, and aside from Peter Davison, who was in is thirties taking the role, the Doctors were all roughly middle-aged after Jon Pertwee until David Tennant. Sure, we've had brilliant younger actors to take the role, like Peter Davison, David Tennant, and my personal favorite, Matt Smith, but don't count out the older Doctors. Anyone who thinks an older Doctor can't be energetic or exciting clearly hasn't seen the First Doctor battle himself in a walking stick-fight, or Jon Pertwee sword-fight with the Master.
And inside? The Doctor is still an old man. Even as an old man, the Doctor is spry: plus, some young ladies fancy older gentlemen.
I don't see how anyone could whine about his age at all. Especially when he gives that heart-wrenching speech in "The Zygon Inversion". His age gives that moment even more weight, I feel.
@@k1productions87 you shoukd see how many doctor who "fan"girls were getting worked up over an older doctor in 2013
I love how Sylvester's hat moves every so often when he's talking, like at 0.30. Like its a part of him.
Tom Baker is just a brilliant person.
I don't care how old the Doctor is, I'll continue to watch the show! Going with Capaldi is a good idea rather keeping them young and "attractive". It's true I have a soft spot for David due to looks but also as an overall great Doctor, but I also enjoyed Christopher and Matt. What's amazing about the Doctor isn't his looks, it's his brain.
Capaldi was also perfect to give "that speech" from Zygon Inversion. While I'd love to hear it in other doctors' voice (with prep, not just cold reading), Capaldi's age gave it that much more weight, not just showing the experience behind his words, but even the devastation of it all. I don't know... there's just something that hits so much harder seeing an older man weep
every time Tom Baker speaks (including here), I just get little goosebumps everywhere - what a man, with what a voice!
It's so good to see that all the classic Doctor's are friends in real life.
Matt Smith Is Officially 12
Thirteen
You sure he’s as old as that? I think he might be... 11
Matt Smith may have been the youngest, but his Doctor was the most grandfatherly. He was much more wise and humble than previous incarnations, and I think the fact that he's portrayed by someone so young makes it really effective. Where else will you find a 12 year old play someone like that?
"It would be quite interesting to see one with a hump."
God bless you, Tom.
Why not a hunchback or even a physically handicapped Doctor?
* Sylvester sticks cane up under his coat *
ohhh I just LOVE how Colin smiled a bit when Tom said nobody failed in the role :D
Anyone else not going to notice that Tom Baker is basically wearing the Tenth’s look of the pinstripe suit, blue shirt and quirky patterned tie?
Tom's answer is the best one
Colin Baker you're a genius 😂😂😂😂
OMG I'm laughing so hard
It should be no surprise that Doctor Who is one of few shows that can (and will continue to) go on for multiple eras. Unlike some shows where actors leave or pass away, it is customary in Who for actors to change all the time. On top of that, it deals with space and time, themes that can go in countless directions - past, present and future, often dealing with aliens and the unknown, meaning you aren't restricted to human themes in any way. If ever a show was going to last this long, Doctor Who was always it.
I really like Sylvester McCoy from watching him in interviews- he seems to have quite a twinkle in his eye.
4 Doctors in 1 room? There must be a tear in the time space time continuum...
Tom: “Nobody has ever failed at it.”
Colin: **smiling**
Jodie: *crying*
1:25 Doctor Who has sure had a lot of family connections over the decades. I really hope the series will continue running forever and outlive all of us.
Andrew Chapman Well, the entire UK is the size of a single US state, so no wonder there's a lot of overlap in the industry.
Capaldi is actually ONE OF the oldest actors to play the Doctor... He's the same age that William Hartnell was when he took on the role... That is if you don't count John Hurt who was in his early seventies... And of course we don't count the War Doctor!
Technially when Hartnell's first episode aired he was 55, and Capaldi's 56 years old now
Yes, but they were still both 55 when they started playing the Doctor...
Hurt counts. He's even credited in Day of The Doctor as 'The Doctor'. Right in-between Paul and Christopher, which is fitting.
No he doesn't. The Doctor doesn't admit to all his lives. He doesn't count as one of the Twelve Doctors even though he's cannon.
Stephen Murphy Going to entirely ignore the part when 10 and 11 accept him, yeah? Then he re-accepts himself?
Oh I do love Tom Baker and Sylvester McCoy
"He may be eleven". Well played 6
If you've gone to a lot of actors panels at science fiction conventions you'll usually find that while you might like an actor or actress for their skill in their profession, they aren't always great as panel speakers. But with Doctor Who all of these actors who played the lead character are to a man clever, entertaining panel guests.
This was a great day and probably one of the best days i will ever ever have.
I dont think the actors age matters just as long as they manage to get across to the audience this character who has seen so much and has had so much damage and heartbreak but so much adventure and someone who has got a great history and a FANTASTIC future.
I'm still sad Matt Smith is leaving :C
I'm still sad Peter Capaldi is leaving :C
a b xD
I'd like to see them discuss how others' ages affect the doctor. He seems to view his vast age as something that separates him from other people. He felt a special connection to the face of Boe even though they barely knew each other, and when Rory ended up being twice his age, he gained a whole new respect for the man and began treating him like a father-in-law.
I talked to Sylvester and Sophie about Matt's age and I told them he was 27 because they thought he was over 30. But then Sophie added 'but he's mentally 12'
Can you upload the whole panel video here? I can't seem to watch it properly on your site. Quality issues, player too small, a number of things.
Are you using google chrome?
iMine Storm Firefox, regardless of what I addons I might be able to download I would still rather it uploaded here.
I agree - can the whole panel PLEASE be uploaded here in HD on youtube? I have problems with the BBC website too.
I could listen to baker talk all day!
It’s always about the actor. The oldest actors frequently had a child’s glint in their eyes and Matt Smith came across like an old man. As long as the actor can span the gulf, it will work, Baker’s statement notwithstanding.
I really think Peter will be a brilliant Doctor. Can't wait to see him in action.
Uncoordinated Randomness well, now that his tenure has come to an end, what did you think of it? Was it as good as you hoped?
@@FitzroyfallzCapaldi was great as the character, but sadly the era at large was held back significantly by poor writing. Of course the writing got ever worse under Chibnail, but that doesn't mean things weren't already on the rapid decline under Moffat.
As soon as Colin gives his two cents, this panel extract gets epic.
I absolutely love the consensus about Matt; where the initial assumption was, "Oh, God, no; he's far too young." And then it become, "oh, no, he's the oldest young person on the planet."
Like, that is the quintessential description of Matt's Doctor; so much age and wisdom, but also the whimsical abandon that can come with growing older; and he manages to capture that and did it right from the start.
And we get gems like, "Christmas Eve on a rooftop, saw a chimney, my whole brain just went: "What the hell!""
Or
The Doctor: I think you'll find I'm universally recognized as a mature and responsible adult.
Kazran as a child: It's just a bunch of wavy lines.
The Doctor: Yeah? It's shorted out. Finally, a lie too big.
Last night I was watching agents of shield and one of the agents was asked a question that question was you are on a island with a box what would be in that box the response was The Tardis
What's funny is that Peter Davison was the second youngest Doctor, after Matt Smith, and no one said a word about him.
CatieTheAwesome oh yes they did! People all over hated him, saying he was too young and couldn't portray an old man. As it is with all the Doctors when they are first revealed, people hated them. Even Tom Baker!
@@Fitzroyfallz You couldn't dislike Peter Davison as Dr Who. His character was too warm and kind to dislike.
How much of the 4th doctor did David Tennant watch to have adopted his style of saying "aww"?
Tom Bakers reaction reminds me of that kid in class who always looked like they were paying attention but really were in their own world
Woo! Great panel!
the thing i loved about matt smith was that he has such an old soul that he seems like he is older than he actually is while still keeping his gorgeous 30 year old face.
"nobody has ever failed at it" - we have our first Tom..
Tom Baker seems to be wearing 10's wordrobe ;)
... if he only wore some white converse :P
There is an interview from one tom was young, and he really is wearing a pin stripe suit and converse plimsolls
So cool to see 4 and 5 together. This is like seeing 9 and 10 together. You never really see them ever interact nor do they catch up irl in passing. We didn't get to see 4 actually show up in The Five Doctors so to see this, this was the closest we'll ever really get.
I see you Tom, wearing David Tennant's pinstripe suit lol
Tom still speaks like old-school. I like it)
Tom Baker is the Boss! :D
Tom Baker...still looking good!
OMG All of my favorite Old doctors
“No one has ever failed at it”. #13 “Hold my beer!”
OMG Peter Capaldi is the second oldest doctor to start playing the role because Capaldi is now 56 born 14 April and Hartnell was 56 born 8 January
PS Hartnell and Troughton both died at age 67 but Pertwee died at the age 76 and all three of them died of heart failure strange but true
This is what we all wanted for the 50th anniversary special!
I thought The Doctor's regeneration cycle was kinda like a version of Benjamin Buttons. So he was born, aged somewhat to get to look like Hartnell, and when he regenerates he gets younger. The reason why he's older now is because he got a new regeneration cycle, which means that he just starts older again.
But apparently this isn't the case is it?
It really isn't and we didn't need Capaldi to prove that. 5 to 6 and 8 to 9 (putting the War doctor aside for this argument because he's a recent retcon, as I'm talking from a real-life perspective from years ago) are already examples of the Doctor regenerating into an older body. In any case it would be a mistake to define in advance how regenerations should go; the current showrunner at the time of a regeneration should feel free to go with the better choice for what they want to do at that time.
Ironically, Hartnell was not that old while portraying the role. He was only in his 50s. They just made him look older.
@@buslady6695 No, he looked even older in real life, look up interviews.
Tom said nobody has failed at being the Doctor that was true till Jodie
Yep, Chibnall and Whittaker snapped that string.
"i think anyone can do it really" - Tom Baker
and along came Jodie Whitaker
And she's alright.
Splendid fellows. All of you.
i like some of the other doctors but tom baker is my all time favourite !
Is nobody gonna mention that Tom Looks like he is dressed as the Doctor, but like the wrong one.
I like how Peter Capaldi is older, because it will flock out the fake whovians who were just there to see hot people like Matt and David
oh that happened the moment Capaldi was announced to be the 12th Doctor. Literally MINUTES after the reveal there were thousands of people stating that they "Will never watch Doctor Who again! The Doctor is too old now!"
Quite pathetic when you think about it.
Screw the fake Whovians! I can't wait for Series 8!
Are these the same fake whovians who complain about Moffat and Smith all the time? Cause it would make sense.
See, though, David Tennant helped in jump starting the show again. Now that Doctor Who is super popular again, it's fine to use a Doctor who isn't the youngest or hottest.
And besides. Although I loved David's hysterical faces, I liked both Matt and David for their hysterical personalities more than looks.
My favorite Doctor is the 10th, but honestly I don't care that Capaldi is older. I've looked at most of the Doctors and I like all of them, no matter what they look like.
Of course age doesn't matter to the Doctor. William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee in the last years of their lives being dedicated to their roles are indicative of that.
I like Sylvester's vest.
"Nobody has ever failed at it." Is that what inspired Chibnall?
What a nasty trick - an overlay panel says to click to go back to the video, and it takes you to a different URL. And if you click outside the panel it stops the video. Sucky.
i love how when tom mentioned the doctor with a hump, Sylvester put his umbrella in his coat, making a hump
Colin Baker true story lol
2:17 Sylvester
“Age is just a number” - The Doctor
Actually John Hurt is the oldest actor to play The Doctor.
Does anyone know where I can find the full panel?
Matt Smith was awesome doctor!
Haha, when Peter tells them to stay away from David... Never gunna happen!
I liked Peter Capaldi, it was good to have a cantankerous old man again.
No one mentioning Tom dressed as David’s Doctor
Because Tom was wearing pinstripe suits when David was still in school uniform.
Lots of men wear pinstripes IRL. All you've done is point up just how boring and bland the 10th Doctor's costume was without his coat.
Tom: "Nobody has ever failed at it."
Jodie: 👁️👄👁️
BOOM! headshot!. lol
I like Jodie. I don't think she failed at it at all.
@@jerobriggs6861 People like to blame actors for bad writing even when they do a great job. I don't get it. She's honestly one of the best.
I'd watch the show even without David And Matt.
Doctor who is overall an amazing show.
My favorite doctors are David t Matt s tom baker Jon pertwee and peter davison
colin baker my love 😭❤️❤️
Has Tom nicked David's Doctor's costume??
Me when I watch doctor who it reflects that while you may look young on outside you are old on the inside visa versa you maybe old on the inside but me young in the inside I think most people balance the dual aspects of feeling both young and old :)
Or just be like Matt and be both young physically and very young mentally.
With all his vast time lord knowledge, Matt Smith still can't play soccer to save his life.
You are aware Matt smith had trials as a kid before becoming injured which changed his direction into acting.
I think of the scene
I am surprised to see Tom on the same panel as other drs
"That's his father-in-law!"
2:12 Marty Feldman would have been great in the part.
Age doesn't matter he's the doctor. He may change to young or old. But every body is The Doctor. It's kinda saying like when you like the 10th doctor that's also saying you like a old person. Their both the doctor. No matter what's the Age. He's the doctor. He may look young, but he once looked old. So if you like David, you like the past doctors too. Their all different actors, But their all, The Doctor.
McCoy was an unbelievable Doctor, by that I mean, I didn't believe a word he said as that character.
Why?
"When are they gonna go back to when Doctor Who was old?"
Literally the next regeneration
Matt has very very old eyes.
As usual, Tom Baker steals the show.
I love Tom Baker and Sylvester McCoy
Great! 😆
Nobody has ever failed being doctor who....Except Jodie Whittaker
Failed for some people Like me and you but others can enjoy it
Jodie did an absolutely fantastic job playing the Doctor. She was filled with spirit and completely embodied the character. Obviously her stories suffered a lot until the end of her run, but that's not her fault. She was a great Doctor.
Sylvester gave a good answer but Tom nailed it, that's a man above the nonsense he's been in (and lifelong doctor who fan, it IS nonsense)
