Kaye you take the "prissy" out of quilting and I so enjoy it. I appreciate how you try to empower us beginners instead of intimidate and create dependance. And you try to put almost everything within our reach. You are a born teacher and uplifter.

I was cleaning up my sewing room. I found some of my initial HST's....made early in my quilting journey and incorporated into a pinwheel block (with no spun center gasp!). It was nice to look at my blocks and appreciate how far I have come. I did spin the centers. More importantly, I had NO SHAME that my corners were not 50:50 with the colors I chose, because now (due to the great quilt teachers such as you and others), all of my HST's are perfect. And none should judge their first attempts as anything but apprenticeship skill building--and a slightly wonky block is better than none at all. I am in the camp of trimming down (after not being in that camp). Any small deviation on an angular cut (whether cutting, sewing, pressing) magnifies. I trim with my HST's closed, so I'm only making 2 cuts using the seam line. It helps me save time later.
Your teaching equips quilters to fend for themselves and not rely on others. So many ask "How do I resize?". Your gridding helps people understand what you can resize (and what you cannot due to divisors/multiples that may not play well together).
Love your beautiful jacket....Elegant, smart and sassy (you and your jacket!)

In a previous video, you stated that your side triangle is the only piece that you cut larger. I agree! Fabric is too expensive to over-size each and every piece. Our elders didn’t do it back in the day and I’m not either. Nothing I do is perfect and I have accepted that- I do my best!

I can cut these exact but diagonal sets can move a bit so I overcut a bit just in case. it’s a choice.

Thank you for this. I’m not particularly experienced with quilting, but I have analyzed a lot of patterns. I used to draw them out on graph paper so that I could understand them. Something I’ve wanted to do is design a quilt with pieced borders, but how the heck would I figure out the sizes? You’ve given me the key!

I’ve been working on my triangle for two years and made 3 quilts and 3 are in progress. I don’t have the rulers with the7/8 on it
But it would be nice to find one
Love your teaching on the math.

Kaye, Thank you for explaining this math to me. I'm new to quilting and I'm with Mary Ellen...forget those 7/8" and 5/8" cuts! Hahaha! It's SO much easier to cut larger then trim everything down accurately. You're a GREAT instructor! I love watching you!

I'm sure glad they have a save button! What a great video. But I am so bad at math that I'm going to have to play it back a few times until my feeble brain builds a few more neural pathways. I love the 7/8" rule and caught onto that instantly. Alas, I will have to figure out with a few repetitions what you did with the placement of the ruler. Can you tell I'm new at this? I'm taking comfort in the idea that you can teach an old dog new tricks...it just takes a bit longer. Thank you so much!

I’ve so enjoyed watching and learning. Tried the 7/8 addition for HST… worked just like you said. What addition to the square do I add to make QST. I’d been trying rather unsuccessfully for the last week … long story … and then I find this tutorial.
I doubt I’ll ever make a full sized quilt but wanted to try my hand at smaller… both piece and quilt … table topper to start. Then grad to baby sized for our first great grands coming later this year. 💖

My first time watching, I subscribed. I like your style. I was just going through my fabric stash and found 2 unfinished quilts. One my mother started, perfect for a Christmas quilt, green and white 6-point stars. One my grandmother started, a teddy bear stencil, 18" blocks, all the bears are the same muted brown floral mini print on white background. I think I'll sash each block 1" around with a soft solid brown keeping it monotone. I may put half-square triangles in the corners for added interest?

Am just found a quilt from Moda Fabric. It is half square triangles. Where can I find the rulers you talk about. So to cut my own I add 7/8 inches to what it finishes at. ? Want to make sure I have that right.
