Many high handicap and beginner players start their downswing with the wrong move. Their swing sequence is backwards - it's need to go down before around. In this video Coach Ed teaches Patrick how to model the downswing of PGA professionals like Justin Rose and Justin Thomas. We use Trackman's compare function to match up swings and see what changes can help Patrick develop a better swing.

Circa '72, someone sang, "... and all this science I don't understand, it's just my job five days a week ..."
While I am a numbers and data guy, I've learned that when one studies the minutiae of the golf swing (like many athletic moves), copious amounts of alcohol might become necessary.
I find it interesting Coach Ed's recollection of greats of the game past and how they, and even himself, taught the swing and game, prior to all this [really cool] technology. The data and how it quantifies knowledge of the past is really cool, however, the more I try to hit this ball, I find that, within correct understanding of concepts and proper fundamentals, I just have figure this thing out by what works for me - I'm skeptical that MY knowing all this technical and specific data, I could get my short fat guy stature to consistently achieve the beauty of a correct golf swing.
Thanks for another great video, gentlemen. Hear, hear!! 🍺 🍻 🍺

Knew the quote but couldnt place it …🤦🏼‍♂️rocket man baby …love the interweb sometimes ..✌️👍🏼also im sort of similar …I don’t know that i need numbers so much as just tell me whats wrong and how to fix ,and, how itll “feel” …obviously in this video seeing and comparing numbers from pre adjustments are very enlightening for” his “swing …and its worthwhile for someone fine tuning an almost great swing ….but im Such a hack who gotten older (was 2yrs old when rocket man came out 🤷🏼‍♂️😬) that the flashlight drill and the butte against the wall drill (or both together) are what helps me most …yet Eds way of showing the numbers with “fixes” does seem to make me grasp the concepts somewhat ,where in the past i would glaze over when numbers were thrown around 😜👍🏼✌️

These live lessons continue to be incredibly valuable. I finally got my Maglites, and it was eye-opening how overly laid off I was at the top of my backswing. Drills have been very helpful to establish a consistent swing plane. Thanks again for publishing these!

One thing most golf duffers don't ever think about is core strength, make it a point to tighten your core on your practice swings, start with slow swings and then build speed to normal speed.
you'll be surprised at the results .... Love you guys common sense approach.

I like the end of the video when Ed drew up a triangle and had Patrick swing on both the backswing and the end of the swing in the same place. In the Jack Nicklaus video Golf My Way he mentioned that he wanted to have the follow through to be a mirror image as the end of the backswing. This should be done in practice and at the start of a warmup before playing because you want to fully release the club during your round of golf.

Isn't that feeling of dropping behind you to prevent the over the top move make it difficult to get the flashlight stick pointing down the line properly?

Sure. I do use one on occasion but I’ve found many students abbreviate their swing using an impact bag. I want a swinging motion all the way to a full finish.

Video was great , youtube has gotten ridiculous though..an ad at about every 2 minutes …does that mean youre getting more views, so now they see opportunity to make more $$ off your videos .? Lol 😂
Think i need to break down and finally take a real, live in person lesson. Went out last weekend before it got cold again ……and im all over the place almost like i never played before .. i see stuff in every video of yours that are things i possibly need to work on to fix issues .which is great ,but im getting a little bit of info overload after i mess up a shot / swing and start to think how to fix it the over the next shot … and it almost always got worse lol…i had to stop thinking and just walk up to ball and swing with zero thought to even keep the ball in play at one point …sounds counterintuitive but i was locking up over the ball after a dozen duffs, Slices , tops ,chunks and mis aimed shots trying to think of ways to stop all the miss hits… so i just lined up amd swung without a single thought to get by a lot of the round .frustrating that ive progressively gotten worse in the last 20 years …from shooting in the 90’s around the turnof the century, to upwards of 120 (I don’t know exact number had to stop keeping score ) last week … i never was crazy into constant practice and i did go and play cold ,first round in months with no range time before ….so im writing it off as “shaking off the cobwebs” type of situation…if not for the couple cans of swing lube i had ,the round might’ve been no fun! Thats how bad i was hitting em lol🍻🍺..
Sorry for the rant 😂 keep up the great work please .

do you think too that when you were trying the new downswing move AND trying to finish hands high that because you were still swinging the same swing with path left that you were digging the club in behind the ball thinking about coming back up and finishing high? if you forced your path a little more square to target or slightly right wouldnt your hands WANT to release higher? thats what my brain is telling me. I used to be a chronic "digger." EVERY shot was fat until I learned to naturally release the club but my path had to be a lot more out in front/right which naturally made me finish higher. so weird what thinking about a golf swing does to your brain haha

Hmmm, I'm not so sure you are addressing the real flaw. You're pushing off of your right leg instead of pulling with your left. The symptoms are your right foot and knee are moving toward the ball on the downswing...ergo your early extension. You may need to understand how the right foot is supposed to work. Why? Your back swing isn't perfect as you're still on your right toes at the top instead of on your right heel. If you want to fix your right foot issue on the backswing, shift left as the first thing you do (it may feel that you're swaying left but you're not...you're really squatting and squaring up your hips) on the downswing, the club will come straight down on that desired line automatically instead of you trying to hit a position by manipulating your arms. If you then extend your left leg after shifting left (sit into your left side and then jump with your left foot) you'll be a long way toward swinging on plane much better. Your balance and early extension will be gone. You'll find that this will fix your follow through too but you might need another swing thought to maintain your right side bend to do that. At least that's my $0.02.

@@chunbach3692 LOL - there's no hate in my comment, just trying to be helpful and compare the same two swings that are in the video.and put into words how the pro transitions and why the club drops into the slot. The golf swing is as much an art as it is a science. Opinions and opining are what commenting is about.

The first step before getting any lessons is to get a proper club fitting from a qualified fitter, not a salesperson at Dick's or G. Galaxy. If the club is not performing properly for the strength (by strength I mean the physical strength) of the golfer, lessons are a waist of time. One thing I notice watching Justin's swing is how the club naturally releases at and through impact. From 40 years experience building clubs for amateur golfers, modern club swing weights have created a lot of problems for the amateur golfer. We have gone from lower E and upper D range (which was men's standard swing weights back in the 80's and before) to lower D and upper C range (which was women's standard swing weights). Feel free to correct me if I am wrong but most male pro golfers are still playing with heavier swing weights; E-0, D-8, etc. The heavier swing weights require a stiffer shaft to control the flex created in the down swing. Men swinging a C-9 driver with a stiff shaft will not get proper performance out of the club, it will not "release" naturally. You can't change the laws of physics and momentum. The shaft in a C-9 weighted club needs to be an A flex (which stands for "amateur", not senior) or a L flex (lady) shaft to get the club to release naturally, and I emphasize, for a female golfer! Because of the lighter swing weights coupled with male ego driven stiff shafts creates the need to manipulate the club with the hands in an attempt to get a proper release. The pros do not manipulate the hands; the swing weight of the club head facilitates a natural release. Once a golfer gets properly "fit" for the proper swing weight, shaft flex and loft/lie, then and only them will the club release naturally without manipulation. I appreciate your golf swing knowledge and experience but let's start people off at square one, not somewhere in the middle trying to correct something that should not even be occurring in their swing; it is much easier to maintain the proper swing path and get a natural release with a heavier swing weighted club fit with a proper flex shaft that has been matched to the physical strength of the golfer. Peace out.....

As someone building clubs for 40 years, you know far better than I do on this matter. I myself am an amateur golfer +20 handicap. Can you please explain why you would suggest getting your clubs fitted before getting your swing straight? My thought process is this. My swing is semi-inconsistent, meaning I have bad habits like pulling out of my swing, ball placement in my stance, chicken wings in my backswing, etc. I feel like if I went and got fitted for clubs, they are going to be built based on incorrect habits. So if my swing is wonky the clubs are going to be built wonky too. Would it not be better to take some lessons, get bad habits ironed out and then go get clubs built when someone has a better foundation to work with. As an example I was gifted so Lynx irons back in 2008, I use a Cleveland Hi-Bore XLS Driver 50g (reg) fuki..something shaft (The most obnoxious sounding driver LOL!) AND 35 year old Ram 3W/5W (Cause I never bothered to learn how to hit them properly). I have all of these clubs and I am working to break 100 consistently. BEFORE I spend $2k on a set of fitted irons/driver/woods, I really feel like a few $70 lessons are a better investment for me to hit better with what I have. Please feel free to correct my thinking on this.

@@jaredlamb9743 Jared, it's a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" kinda thing for you. Clubs that do not fit you, (length, shaft flex, loft and lie, swing weight, grip size) can add to your bad habits; If the club is not performing for you, you will have to compensate in your swing to make the ball go where you want it to go. If the shaft flex is wrong, you will loose distance and direction. Same for playing the wrong loft and lie. If the length is wrong for you, you will not hit the center of the face consistently, costing you distance. If your grips are wrong size, it will affect your release, same with playing the wrong swing weight; too light swing weight you will have to manipulate your hands to get the club to release, too heavy and your release will be late. My best advise for you is to STOP WATCHING ALL THESE HACKS POSTING GOLF ADVISE ON RUclips, they will only lead to your confusion in your swing. Find a local PGA certified teaching pro/fitter and start with lessons as he/she evaluates your needs with respect to your clubs. Buy used clubs and have them re-shafted and gripped to fit you, they do not have to be new clubs. You can find used clubs and shafts for sale all over the internet. Off the rack and hand me down clubs are hardly every "universal" fit for every golfer. If you are serious about your game, it will indeed cost "serious" money to play well. If you're just playing for fun, then go and have fun and spend your money elsewhere. Cheers!
