There's something really, genuinely spooky about Crack The Skye. The songs seem not so much written as channelled. Brent apparently wrote the album while recovering from a head injury, which included some mild brain trauma. Who knows what that can open.person up to? This album never fails to get an emotional response from me. It's like a part of the fabric of reality speaking.

What's great is the guy doing most of the singing in this song is also the lead guitarist, so the guy is doing both things really well, the bassist is the guy who does the deeper and growly vocals. The drummer also does a lot of singing but isn't in this song, he's usually doing the cleaner vocals, so this band is full of incredible talent to play their instruments as well as they do but also all do singing as well.

Porcupines are actually good climbers, they can be found high up in trees very often, so it's not that unusual. I've heard stories of people accidentally knocking them out of trees and landing on them, which is as horrible as you can imagine with a creature that has a back covered in spikes.

Mastodon isn't really a weird band name but the name definitely evokes an image more in-line with their earlier heavier music. If I had never listened to their music and heard the name I'd picture heavy and trodding gritty music. Which they still incorporate in their music but they're a far cry from their first album at this point.

@@JonaKebab true I didn't love the second album tbh I was a massive fan of of the first 2 ep's and the first album and when the second album came out nothing jumped out at me apart from the drumming on another sinking ship. When they came back after the 10 year hiatus I thought even though it was more commercialised they came back strong and the new vocalist has an incredible range

I'm late to the party, but the comparison of Brent Hinds's vocals to Ozzy is excellent. I never noticed it before today, but with headphones on it's hard to not hear the resemblance. Great review, BTW.

Fantastic video man! I completely agree with your comments at the end.
I saw the title and I knew you'd absolutely love this track!
As a recommendation there's a Japanese band called Sigh, I highly recommend you check them out! It's very hard to explain what they're like... But loosley picture a mixture of Opeth, Frank Zappa and black metal... They're kinda insane and it's amazing!
For songs by them I recommend either Scarlet Dream or Amnesia
I know you'll have a blast with this one! :)

First few Mastodon albums are amazing. Haven't listened to much of their new stuff. Saw them in Nottingham supporting Tool on their 10,000 days tour. Was an epic gig, back when you could smoke at concerts. Had to have the spliffs out. Lines of charlie on the sly. Good times been young :)
    Back to my suggestions.
The Faceless - Autothiest Movement part 1 to 3
Dream Theater - Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence disk two (its like 1 continuous song so you might need to sort something out with the 30 minute recording time on ya camera. Or split the video into 2 I suppose.)
Cradle of Filth - Lord Abortion
    Carcass - Heartwork
    Thanks again Jim 👍

I never thought about the ozzy comparison with Brent’s vocals but I hear it now. Has anyone let him know that 3 of the 4 members are vocalists and to me gives them something I haven’t heard from that many other bands. My favorite active band for sure

Crack the skye and emporer of sand are their best albums. But i like them all, this is my top 3 bands of all time: AIC, TOOL, Mastodon, Blind melon

The word Jim was looking for to describe Mastodon at the end of the video is "raw." Their music doesn't sound over-produced. It sounds like it was recorded directly from the soundboard at a concert, instead of being manufactured in a studio.

Thank you! I’ve been saying for years that he sounds like Ozzy.
Not my favorite song from them, but it’s certainly solid. I’d be curious, Jim, now that you’re hoping to dive more into them, what you’d think of their *old* stuff.
I prefer the newer proggy ‘70s Mastodon like this, but I don’t dislike their older stuff (Ahab, Blood & Thunder, etc) either, I just don’t listen to it as much.
So please check out some of those songs as well.
I’d also love to see how you reacted to the music video(specifically that version... you’ll see why...) of their song The Motherload from more recently.

Mastodon is very heavy and very progressive having a unique sound of their own. Having three of them singing lead vocals and using that ability even within single songs, give them great diversity. I also appreciate Mastodon for making pretty complicated music without sounding complicating. Many new band fall into that ditch of technical masturbation. if Monty Python could say 'masturbation' in 70's, I think I can use the word today...:o)
(It's Monty Python's 50th anniversary this year! Let's do the Fish Slapping Dance!)

Hearts Alive..... the album proceeding this "Leviathan" in my opinion is their Magnum Opus. Most Mastodon fans I think jumped on the wagon during this album and there's no shame in that. They have some incredible musicianship.

Anyway, The Last Baron is fuckin' FIRE, like whole Crack the Skye album.

    Elder - Blind
    Atomship - Mothra
    Soen - Rival
