    Brann really breaks the cookie cutter mold of metal drumming where it's just straight double bass and all that, he's very snare oriented and makes it fun and challenging to listen and play to. Probably my favorite metal drummer.

    • @xpatzorsx
      @xpatzorsx 4 года назад +8

      There's an old drum clinic video where he talks about how he sort of came up playing along with guitar players as opposed to bass players. He sort of attributes his "note-ey"-ness to that.
      I could listen to him drum all god damn day.

    I heard Brann played a 4/4 backbeat once. There were no witnesses.

  • @MasonFries
    @MasonFries 5 лет назад +54

    Brann is on another level. Very few drummers can play like him. Pleanty have the speed, and some have the rythm. But Brann can play polyrythms at brake-neck speeds in odd times, offbeat, while singing... just a monster musician. Deney Carey of Tool and Tomas Haake of Mashuggah are the only names that come to mind when trying to find anyone on his level, and I think he's got even them beat.
    I'm not even a drummer, and this dude is easily in my top 5 inspirations.

    I am in a FB group that consists mainly of music producers with various degrees of experience and talent, and one common "meme" in there is variations of "the snare sound like s**t". There are also many discussions about how to make the snare sound great and I asked once about the obsession about the snare. One reply was "it is the snare that makes people listen to the drums, that's why it is so important". While I agree that an outstanding snare might get people to listen to the drums, I do not agree that it is automatically a good thing since it can also be argued that it distracts from the other elements of the composition. A good drum sound is a different thing, then we talk about the general balance of "the instrument" that is a drum set.
    But it got me thinking and I believe this idea of the snare as "the holy grail" has existed for some time because very often it is possible to determine when a song is recorded by listening to the snare. Just as you can in a video by looking at their clothes.
    What is drummers view of this?
    Can you make a video about "Snare fashion over the years"? "The gated eighties" :)

      He’s got a ton of more exciting drum songs, he obviously rips on this song but he’s got playthroughs for meinl in amazing quality of songs like ghost of Karelia/precious stones/ember city/blasteroid, feel like most of those are more interesting Imo. The last baron rules but sadly he didn’t do that song for the meinl playthroughs which is a bummer because he crushes that shit.

    I remember playing on Brann’s drum-kit and thinking: “how on earth does he play what he does with his kit set-up like this?!” I had a hard time reaching anything. He’s about 6’2-6’3” and I’m at 6 even, so that could have been part of it.
    If you like listening to Brann- there’s a link below, their true 9 song demo (pre-LifesBlood). I’m sure you will enjoy it. It’s right after Bill and Brann left ‘Today is the Day’ and as far as I know, they were unsigned at the time. However, they were working on a deal with Relapse Records.
    The drums on the recording are Vibe drums (red). 20” bass, 15” floor if I remember correctly (6-piece).

    A drummer that I think you would like, is Vlad from Jinjer. That dude is killer and on a smaller kit. Just watch some of their videos in your own time and see if it's anything you could post. As I haven't seen any strictly drum cam footage of him playing. I just saw them on Friday and it was awesome. I couldn't see him or the guitar player Roman, because I was upstairs on the left side of the stage,and had front of house speakers hanging there.But they have several videos, some with different drummer's and an additional guitar player.

    cool analysis, something of note, the instrumental bridge is in 11/8, played as 5/8+6/8, it's not in 4/4, i think they've messed around with polyrhythm stuff before but that harmonized lead bit was definitely some proggy noodliness. Dream Theater likes to pull that compound/shifting meters trick too, The intro riffs for The Test That Stumped Them All, Constant Motion, and arguably In The Presence of Enemies pt 1 all pull similar tricks (13/8 or 7+6, 11/8 or 5+6, and 12/4 or 5/8+5/8+7/8+7/8)

    I don't mean any shade. Brann is a monster player, for sure. Mastodon rocks. And how Brann sings and plays at that level is beyond me, BUT... have y'all noticed that nearly all his fills are the same? He always winds up with a snare roll into a sorta galloping pattern around the toms. It's in A LOT of songs on multiple albums.

    I suggest a reaction to Kai Hahto playing in Wintersun. There's a drum cam for the song Sons of Winter and Stars. I am sure you'll have a blast with this band you do not know but in its category is one of the greatest. Now Kai is playing in Nightwish where the drumming is simpler but the band is more known in the US. If you like the drumming you might want to see the live rehearsal remastered video of the whole song. The talent they have is astonishing.
