It appears that this song is about the novel, Moby Dick, possibly a an inspired narration by Captain Ahab, himself. Incredible concept for such a hard song, and incredible lyrics. I can visualize them chasing down a giant whale right now as I listen to the song.
      Lyrics
I think that someone is trying to kill me
Infecting my blood and destroying my mind
No man of the flesh could ever stop me
The fight for this fish is a fight to the death
      White whale, holy grail
      White whale, holy grail
      What remorseless emperor commands me
I no longer govern my soul
I am completely immersed in darkness
As I turn my body away from the sun
      White whale, holy grail
      White whale, holy grail
Split your lungs with blood and thunder
When you see the white whale
Break your backs and crack your oars men
      If you wish to prevail
This ivory leg is what propels me
      Harpoons thrust in the sky
Aim directly for his crooked brow
And look him straight in the eye
      White whale, holy grail
      White whale, holy grail

      @mikemccolm8311 Год назад

They're not underrated at all... They're highly respected by their peers and those in the industry know just how talented they are...
They're just not as "acclaimed" as they should be because they have sound that is too complex, intricate and experimental for the average persons brain that's been dumbed down by basic 4/4 time pop, rock, hip-hop, rap and baby metal etc...
Those in the know fucking know...
They aren't underrated, just underappreciated by the troglodytes in society and the troglodytes that control the music industry!

Mastodon gets wild, man. Their album "Crack the Sky" was written because the singer at the time was in a brief coma and apparently Rasputin visited him in his coma and inspired the album. When he came out of it, he wrote the album over the course of a year while he recuperated. 6 Grammy nominations and one win, they play interesting music for sure and usually put on a pretty good show. What I find interesting in Mastodon is that none of them were actual singers when they started. Now we have three of them doing leads (with Bill being a competent backing vocalist on his own), each one with a very distinct and unique voice and they're getting _better_ with each new album (and fortunately live as well, since it's one of the things that kept people from them: the live vocals).

Everyone else has said it, but you will likely like the vocals more on the 4th album, Crack the Skye, and later, when the drummer adds his vocal talent to the mix, and the other two vocalists begin using more melody in their singing as well. You absolutely must hear their masterpiece "The Last Baron" from Crack the Skye- though it's a 13 min runtime. "The Czar" from the same album is only 11 min, but also fantastic. Several songs on the album "Emperor of Sand" are great ones to react to as well, I hope you'll hear "Sultan's Curse", "Ancient Kingdom" and "Steambreather" someday. I feel like this is a band you might one day want to do the whole discography, every album has good stuff on it.

Mastodon is not for everyone, but they have built a mass following on their brand of Southern-fried guitar riffs and heavy delivery... This was one of their early tracks from 2004... Vocalist Neil Fallon of Maryland rockers Clutch did co-vocals on 'Blood & thunder'... This album ('Leviathan') was based on the novel 'Moby Dick' by Herman Melville... A lot of their work is based on fantasy fiction.
Hailing from Georgia, Mastodon were formed in 2000 by Brann Dailor (drums), Troy Sanders (bass), Brent Hinds (guitar) and Bill Kelliher (guitar)... Sanders and Hinds started w/ the bulk of the vocals, but Brann Dailor also added his lead vocals from 2009.
Mastodon began recording and releasing original music independently before they got signed to indie metal label Relapse Records and released the first album 'Remission' in 2002... it was followed by the 'Leviathan' concept album in 2004, which got them on tour opening for Slayer eventually and Mastodon began building a hardcore fanbase.
'Blood mountain' was released in 2006 on a major label Reprise Records and Mastodon were on the road constantly as the album charted in the US at #32... the single "Colony of Birchmen" (feat. Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age) became a fan fave.
Mastodon graduated to a headlining band w/ the release of their 2009 album 'Crack the Skye'... the single 'Oblivion' was a huge success and the album featured drummer Brann Dailor contributing lead vocals... Dailor said he named the album after his sister who took her own life because of a painful mystery illness that was undiagnosed (It was likely an autoimmune disorder that can be impossible to diagnose by standard physicians)... 'Crack the Skye' charted at #11 in the US and was a global success.
Later Mastodon albums have been more polished, sonically diverse... and commercially successful - 'The Hunter' (2011)... "Once more round the Sun" (2014)... 'Emperor of the Sand' (2017)... and their latest album "Hushed and Grim" (2021) which charted at #20 in the US... #14 in the UK... Mastodon is still a major headlining act on tour.
Some of the heavier Mastodon songs - 'March of the Fire Ants'... 'Aqua dementia' ... 'The wolf is loose'... 'Quintessence'... 🤘🤘🔥🔥
And Mastodon's newer tracks - 'Show yourself'... 'The Motherload' ... 'Curl of the Burl'... 'Teardrinker'... 🤘🤘

@@FaceEatingOwl haha it's short, brutal, and easy to digest as far as LoG goes. Give an idea of what they're about very quickly

They are fantastic. I guess watching Tool gets you used to weird time signatures already so that helps. If you're talking about that chugga chugga sound it's called a palm muting guitar technique. I'm sure there's a RUclips video of someone doing it for 20 seconds. It's delightful

Mastodon fuckin rules, best discography in metal since their debut in 02. This song and the whole album are actually about moby dick. If you want more heavy stuff you should check out their song “mother puncher” or if you want a long epic song “hearts alive”, if you wanna hear an amazing newer song from them with cleaner vocals then I recommend “roots remain”. Anyway nice reaction, mastodon rules and deserves to be much bigger, one of the most unique metal bands ever, plus they have 3 leaders singers including the drummer.

    MASTODON is great. Do more.
To pair with them, BARONESS is another great band, cut from the same cloth, but have gone one their own path.

When you mentioned not knowing what he's saying, that whole verse was Neil Fallon of Clutch. They're not this kind of heavy these days, but Mastodon knows what's up. Saw these guys play tiny rooms back in the day. Saw them opening for Clutch later on. This entire album is fire.

Do yourself a favor and deep dive the lyrics. If you have read Moby Dick It will all make perfect sense. Captain Ahab is hunting the great white whale who took his leg, and will risk everything, even his crew's lives to destroy it. In classic literature his obsession is only matched by Tolkien's Gollum with his pursuit of his "precious". Another lesser known fact with this song is that Neil Fallon of Clutch sings the verse that reflects when the actual battle is happening. Sick musical composition for a literary masterpiece.
