The Texas Chain Saw Massacre[note 1] is a 1974 American horror film produced and directed by Tobe Hooper from a story and screenplay by Hooper and Kim Henkel. It stars Marilyn Burns, Paul A. Partain, Edwin Neal, Jim Siedow and Gunnar Hansen, who respectively portray Sally Hardesty, Franklin Hardesty, the hitchhiker, the proprietor, and Leatherface. The film follows a group of friends who fall victim to a family of cannibals while on their way to visit an old homestead. The film was marketed as being based on true events to attract a wider audience and to act as a subtle commentary on the era's political climate. Although the character of Leatherface and minor story details were inspired by the crimes of murderer Ed Gein, its plot is largely fictional. It is the first film of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise.

The house has been moved a 100 miles away (more or less), and has changed hands . In addition, running upstairs was useless even 25 years ago - Grandma and Pa aren't there. And they 've swept out the chicken feathers from the front-room.

@@REKTVZ Thanks! I think it arrived in Kingsland 10-15 years ago, and has had considerable modifications to it. All reasonable. You don't have pretty girls on swingsets in front of the porch. She and her friends can hang out on a covered patio. I know if that film's shooting schedule, it was a typical HOT Texas August and the whole crew suffered. Now, they can hang out on the patio. I don't see any signs of meathooks out there, though. I suppose butchery still occurs... and there are still freezer/meat-lockers, too. No idea if those have reserved seating, though... it might still be first-come / first served-up. ahem.

For sequel-sequels Tcm 2, 3, and 2022 are pretty good but the rest are rough at best. The reboot is a different continuity but amazing, almost as good as the first but a different kind of movie. It's prequel [TCM The Beginning] is good too but a little...well it's like a 6.5/10, above average and watchable but not super exciting or standout

TCM is my favorite horror film of all time so when the game was first announced it was a dream come true! You’ll now realize just how detailed the game is based on the movie, the game developers are definitely fans. The game had lots of Easter eggs from the movie, one in particular you’ll now notice is on the Slaughterhouse map by one of the blood bags is the American Astrology book Pam is reading in the movie. I’ve been playing the game myself and still haven’t discovered all the Easter eggs, all part of the fun! Stay blessed!

Yeah, it's based off of Ed boy. He would do his thing (he did not use a chainsaw) and then wear their skin. Not just their faces. Like, skin from their torso and what not. He had this weird thing with women and the cops weren't sure if he just flat out hated women or if he wanted to be one, so that's why he did what he did. He had a brother who died and they don't know for sure if he did it, but it was believed he had something to do with his death.

If you're wondering about the basement I think it takes some inspiration from Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2. That sequel is more of a horror comedy but man some of the gore is great and humor is great too. And the person who plays Chop Top in that, arguably the most memorable part of the sequel, went on to play Otis from House of a Thousand Corpses and The Devil's Rejects.

Some facts for those who don’t know: the movie is loosely based off of Ed Gein’s crimes and the actor who plays as The Hitchhiker named Nubbins in the movie(Edwin Neal)is the same VA for Nubbins in The TCM game. He also got his idea for Nubbins’s personality from a family member of his(i think his cousin or nephew, don’t remember which)who has paranoid Schizophrenia but he was never violent.

Fun Fact: The Events of the game take place several months before the events of this movie. The camera that the hitchhiker has in the van belongs to Maria Flores... Ana's sister. This story is told in the little prequel game that came out last year called "Petals". You can see a playthrough on RUclips.
Sissy and Johnny were supposed to be in the movie but for budget constraints, they couldn't include them in the script... so Kim Henkle (original writer) gave them to Gun Media to use in said game.

@@melagurlthe1andonly1 basically the cast said working on the film was like hell. The weather was extremely hot, the actors would have to take breaks so often, while the cast and film crew took their lunch breaks, no one would sit by leatherfaces actor because they weren’t allowed to wash their sweaty costumes.
The actress who played sally also had to do a lot of dangerous stunts. In the movie where leather face cuts her finger, he actually cut her in real life without her permission because everyone was tired of filming wanted to get the shot done. Even worse, Marilyn burns (Sally’s actress) had to be dropped off of the roof of the house they filmed in multiple times to get the shot of her jumping out of the window. At the end of the movie, The final scene of sally getting in the truck was actually last minute. So the actors for leather face and sally had to come back to set after they thought they had finished the movie. Sally laughing in the truck and leather face waving the chainsaw around we’re the actors real reaction to finally being done with filming.
The actor who played the hitch hiker is a veteran and he even said he’d rather go back to war to refilm this movie. That’s only a small portion of what the cast went through. There’s a documentary about it called “Texas Chain Saw Massacre: The Shocking Truth” if you want to learn more about it.

I have been a HUGE fan of the original 1974 version of TCM since my early teens (pushing 50 yo now) and have always held it as one of my top cult classics of all time. I became so giddy with excitement when I heard of the launching of the game to be replicated like the movie. Watched many videos of streamers playing the beta and became even more excited. So the game is actually a prequel to this original (just fyi). I loved all your in between comments of cracks in the wall, generator, etc like exactly how devs recreated for the game. While the movie villain Leatherface was inspired by the crimes of Ed Gein - who wore his victim's skin - the plot is mostly made up. I believe the director actually wanted to make a commentary on how easily the public could be influenced by propaganda (this is why there is a message at the beginning implying that the events are real). At the time, the Watergate scandal and Vietnam War were largely in the focus of the American consciousness, and both of these events involved the government lying to its people.
As someone born in the years between being a Gen Z and Millennial, I can't really speak to how effective the "propaganda" of the movie was, but my mother (born in the final Baby Boomer years) tells me that she and all her friends thought the movie was absolutely a true story up until a few years ago, so I imagine it was fairly effective at the time.

I'm guessing you've never been on the side of a road when an 18 wheeler goes flying at top speed. the wind from those trucks can knock you back. That's what happened with Franklin. You know what grosses me out the most? Franklin's knife. We see him using it to clean his fingernails. Then the hitch hiker cuts himself with it, meaning the knife is now covered in his blood. Then later on Franklin is picking on the inside of the van with it. Then later Sally takes it and uses it to cut up the barbecue to eat it. Not once did they clean that knife. The the dang thing disappears. Where did it go?
Nubbins (the hitch hiker) has a birthmark. His twin brother, Chop Top, has one too but on the opposite side. The hitch hiker did mark the van with a symbol so that the others, like the cook, would know to mess with them. Originally, this same symbol could be seen on the back of grandpa's chair. but the scene was cut. I wonder if they put that in the game?
When Sally's finger was cut, that was real. Also, all the bones you see in this movie are real, human and animals. Just like in the movie Poltergeist, the skeletons there were also real. Leatherface wears 3 different masks within the movie. The Killer mask, which is the first one seen. The old lady mask, and then the Pretty Lady which is seen towards the end.
The actor who plays Franklin was a method actor and he stayed in character and annoyed everyone. he got on the bad side of Marilyn Burns (Sally) and she hated the guy. The made up later on and even came out in the ending of TX Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation. Marilyn was a patient being pushed on a gurney while Franklin was the orderly pushing her along. Marilyn Burns also played one of the family members in Tx Chainsaw 3D. The only thing with TC3D that I enjoyed was the intro. The movie ignores all the sequels and remakes and is supposed to be a direct continuation of the original. But screws up with a certain character's age and with the tech of the time. The intro is cool because it picks up directly after the original movie ends. There's a bunch of family members out of nowhere.
TCM2, also directed by Tobe Hooper is very different in tone. It's a dark comedy, lots of synth music. It reveals the names and nicknames of the family. We learn their last name is Sawyer. It has Dennis Hopper playing Lefty, Sally's and Franklin's uncle. He's a Ranger who's been after the family for some time now.
Part 3 was called Leatherface:TCM3. Sadly the movie studio, New Line, messed with the movie after the director had finished with it. The movie is darker in tone. the Sawyer family is still a part of the movie, but it's a bunch of new family member. Leatherface is the only one still around I guess.
4 is The Next Generation. It was supposed to be a remake. It still involved a version of the Sawyer Family. It is also one of the weakest of the sequels. Then we got the remake and prequel to that. They're pretty good, but more violent and have more gore. Leatherface is a monster in them. But one of the other family members kind of outshines him. Also the family are no longer the Sawyers, which I remember upset a lot of fans of the original.
Then there's 3D, followed by Leatherface. Leatherface was a prequel to the original movie and 3D and it's basically an origin story.
Then there's the new one, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which ignores all the other movies except the original.

The reason it looks just like the game is because for horror movie fans, this film is sacred. Anybody trying to do the game justice would pore over every frame for every detail as if it were lines of Scripture. To do anything less would be considered disrespectful. You have to understand that this film was legendary in a time before the Internet or Cable TV to circulate word of it. Within 10 years of being released, it was already considered as monumental as THE EXORCIST or PSYCHO. So the fanbase for this *one film alone* cannot be overstated.
The '70s was one of if not THE best decade for American movies. Period. And if they were known for anything, it was NOT subtlety or tameness.
The 2003 version is the first hard reboot. GENERATIONS is actually TCM: THE NEXT GENERATION, and it's...wacky. The sequels are...varied in quality to say the least. Part 2 is different but good, and the 2003 version is better than it has any right to be. But all the others are generally speaking...not that great. Oh, and TEXAS CHAINSAW 3D is a requel; picks up where this one left off, but is on a different timeline than the other stuff before and after it.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise is a gruesome and unhinged viewing experience but it's worth it to watch the first two films and the 2003 and 2006 remake films as well.
(Ps if you want to see where the TCM video game got the inspiration for the underground tunnels / basement murder labyrinth, below the Sawyer house, the game seems to based them off of The Texas Battleland, the abandoned amusement park that's in the second film, which is the Sawyer family hideout in that movie)
If you love 80s slashers that aren't afraid to get weird and wild with it, I really think you'll enjoy the Texas Chainsaw Massacre sequel, the final girl in that movie is so memorable and perfect!

To keep it short, this movie is loosely based off Ed Gein who was a grave robber from La Crosse,WI. He used the skin of the bodies to create things like lamps, gloves, etc. I'm from La Crosse and sometimes you'll see stickers of him around the city it's very strange....

Last comment lol…but I do kinda wish you had watched this before you played the game. Only bcuz on 1st watch, not knowing if the hitchhiker or the cook are involved adds a decent amount of tension/suspense. Either way, it was a great reaction!!! Thank you!
I can’t wait to see your reaction to *TCM 2003* & I’m really *REALLY* hoping you react to *Next Generation* ,as well as *TCM: The Beginning* (the 2006 prequel to the the 2003 film)!

A serial killer in wisconsin did make the kinds of "decor"/"creative Taxidermy" objects in the house from graverobbing and had a similar mask of flesh but that's literally all that's remotely true. Most successful marketing gimmick ever, it really nails most people into thinking its true with the opening crawl. An argument *could* be made that they're similar to the bean family of cannibals from something like medieval scptland/Europe but I don't know much about that and don't recall Hooper or the other writers mentioning they knew about that.

This movie was hell to make, particularly the dinner scene. It was already hot out and the lighting was making it worse. The meat on the table was real and spoiled fast. The kid (je was 19) playiny Grandpa would only put the make up on once, so all his scenes had to be filmed that day. The fake blood for the finger cutting scene congealed too fast, coming out as more of a paste, so they just sliced her finger for real. ...so the kid was literally sucking on a bleeding finger.
Then, at the end when Leatherface falls over and the saw lands on his leg, that scream was legit. Gunner Hansen had a metal plate protecting his leg from the blades, but the friction caused the plate to heat up rapidly. The sudden pain had Gunner thinking his leg was actually being cut into.
