The "Trapped in a Corner" solo section is on of my favorite moments in all of Death's discography. First Andy put such virtuous lines on display and then Chuck absolutely unleashes. Awesome!
This is one of the greatest albums EVER written. In ALL genres of music. The TALENT that this album composes can compete with any musical artistry that has EVER been composed. ( Put that in your pipe and smoke it Mozart). Steve Digiorgio, the bassist, alone holds one of the top spots for genius writing on this album. This man is the reason I bought a fretless bass, and to this day strive to play as he played on this album. INDIVIDUAL THOUGHT PATTERNS... One of the greatest works of art in human history.
Dude I feel you. Bought this album when it was released in 1993, on tape! (I didn't own a CD player back then). Haven't stopped listening to it since then, which makes it the album I played the most, hands down.
Even through my tiny little iPhone, every note from every instrument is clear, distinct, powerful, and present. Don’t forget the fifth member of this band - Scott Burns, the only death metal producer who ever got it right.
Easily one of the greatest metal albums of all time! I can't count the many times I've sat just thinking "how can anyone come up with a riff/arrangement like THAT??" 7:50 12:47 16:13 21:10 ....just to name a few - I'm awe-struck every single time I hear this album. Chuck was a genius like no other.
the guitar tracks are BOTH wrote by Chuck ( with some exceptions at solos ) . Andy was just a guest to make this album possible. Chuck said this in a video.
Yes, some of the solos here are King Diamond style but that's OK with me. It adds character! I like Symbolic more but this one is probably my second favorite.
As respected as Steve DiGiorgio is, he does not hold the same level of popularity as some other bass players within extreme metal (like Alex Webster or Tony Choy) which is a shame because his work has always boundary pushing, specially in Sadus
The number and type of notes each measure contains. For example, in a 4/4 time signature, the measure would contain 4 fourth notes. A 6/8 time signature contains 6 eighth notes.
The cool thing about that opening riff is it's so well written it tricked my ear into thinking it was in regular meter for YEARS then I actually looked at the tab and it's actually switching. Haha maybe it's because of Gene's regular hihat hits that come in and out, and I think that was a subconscious influence on a lot of the first material Im gonna release for my band Spectria starting this year. Death is a HUGE influence on me.
This came out when I was in high school. How lucky were we to be metal fans back then. From DEICIDE to CARCASS PANTERA to SEPULTURA CANNIBAL CORPSE. to SUFFOCATION. OBITUARY to NAPALM DEATH. METALLICA to BIOHAZARD and everything in between. They were all kicking off at the same time.
I mean if we're going to talk jazz Fusion influenced death metal then Cynic - Focus is the one and came out the same year as this. Sean and Paul arguably pushed Chuck towards this amazing sound beginning with Human, Chuck built off that with a forward thinking attitude for ITP and carried those progressive tendancies to the end of his career. Also the Watchtower influence had a part to play in this sound for sure.
+Mark Mensing73 I'm not some sheep, I won't do something just because you tell me to, and that has nothing to do with why my shoes are melting right now.
The solo of Trapped in a Corner literally had me in tears of amazement. Such brilliance. Such emotion. It caught me by surprise. Death's music is truly a timeless gem. I might want to consider doing some Death covers again in the near future 🤔
Andy Larocque, Gene Hoglan, Steve DiGiorgio, and Chuck !! An explosive cosmic supernova of skills and virtuosity with complexity and beauty ! This is one of the few times a remastered CD sounds as good or dare I say better than the original work. The fretless basslines are tasty and well crafted, the drums show you the way to where Chuck and Andy sit in the throne ! Thanks Relapse, cheers from Morocco.
Chuck managed it somehow to recruit a top 10 bassist of all times and a top 10 drummer of all times at the same time plus the skills of LaRocque 30 years ago, as result in 1993 was released one of the most technical albums of all times.
Best classical music album ever ( In the future that is ). I still can't believe I listen to Death nearly 25 years after hearing them when 16 years old. Sadly I have to report we haven't yet got the technology to bring Chuck back to this plane of existence..... :(
Got to toy with a rather expensive analog rig for playing vinyl.... Yeah..... This album is and so is Human were some of the building blocks for really putting technicalities where they weren't at that time in death metal. Let alone metal as a genre as a whole.
Yeah bro Cant believe my mates and i lived off this album and human in highschool in the early 90s yet its still so fresh and technically brilliant. Death shall live forever as the best.
That's the heritage of good music. Timeless, people will still discover this 100 years from now. I started listening to Death at 13 years of age and still do at 42.. Chucks legacy only gets stronger since his passing
One day after band rehearsal in 1994, my bassist gave me this tape to listen to... I was 17 at the time. I was really into both metal, and fusion drummers. Guys like Lombardo, Benante, Menza, Gadd, Colaiuta, and Weckl. When I heard this, it was like someone blended those jazz fusion drummers with the metal drummers.... Something completely new and mind blowing energed - Gene Hoglan... The sheer musicality and imagination on this, and Symbolic totally changed my perception on what was possible in music.
Dooneegomaface Ifinnaspring - Honestly, when I heard it, I didn't want to belive the drumming was real. It was just too intense for me to want to believe.
Best album ever .....I love hearing Andy LaRocue's leads over Chuck's magic and that fret-less bass.... Hoglan is a machine... this was a SuperGroup for metal fans if there ever was one.
pretty sure it's the same guy who mixed and mastered it in 93: Alan Douches, pretty sure it was something forced with the remastering of the original tapes, it kills nothing is everything, but this has been out for 5 years now and I finally got over that fault
The best remaster is the one that came out in 2008. None ever talks about it because hardly any Death fans have heard that particular remaster. It changes nothing, apart from balance the volume and make the instruments more clear, especially drum fills, and it doesn't over-compress everything into a brick wall of noise like this master does. The 2008 one is like the original, but better balanced and more clear. Good luck finding it though! I can't find a legit download of it on the entire internet.
I am 36 and I discovered Death in my later teens. I have specific memories of moments that seem otherwise insignificant, but this music was there with me and it is kind of fitting given what Chuck says about the subtle things in life, the unseen, always there in the mundane hidden way, human longing for meaning. Working at that time meant nothing to me but I had to spend 8 1/2 hours a day doing it, and then there was making music, the big passion. This was such a fitting soundtrack looking back. The feeling that there is more to life, the longing for just that, the frustration with circumstances, the release through music.... Thank you Chuck :)
It's so fucking cool that RELAPSE is releasing tons of Metal albums on their official YT page , I own this DEATH album but cool as hell that it's up for all ears l..l,
This is one of the most amazing metal albums ever conceived. This is in my top 3 favorites of all time! It still gives the chills listening to it even though I've heard it a few thousand times!
12-13-2020... Its been 19 years since the passing of Charles Michael Schuldiner and his music is more popular among the metal community than when he was alive. We miss you Chuck. Support music not rumors.
My favorite DEATH album. and I love all of the other as well. But there is something about this album that makes me love it 2% more than the others. I don't know if its Andy Laroque's playing. or Gene Hoglan's playing. Or the overall Composition. LONG LIVE TO DEATH.
Hands down, this is the best technical death metal album of all times! Brilliant, from its start to the end. Nothing can gets closer to this. The lineup is so masterious! Andy LaRocque's solos are out of this world, and rises the band to the untouchable level for the rest... 🤟👊
Nice! Good to know a Metal album can put you to sleep. Burn My Eyes by Machine Head put me to sleep when I was sick once. I want to try Human to see if it'll help me sleep. It's my preferable choice.
The magnus opus of a really overactive imagination. One of the best albums of all time. In 2019 still listening with same astonishment and still can not chosee which song is the best. RIP Chuck schuldine
I met him too once, at a strapping young lad gig (city tour in europe/swiss). Perhaps 100 ppl in the crowd, front row almost empty, was like a private gig. Gave the roadie a piece of good hash i had as a gift for the superb performance. Gene was looking for me at the venue later to thank me in person, hahaha. Golden.

Where is the invisible line that we must draw to create individual thought patterns
[Lead: Chuck]
Prisoners of mental deception be free within singular judgement
Twisting words to control the masses
To cover up one's self insecurities
Like a drug it feeds the imagination of minds that go unanalyzed
Followers to the leaders of mass hypnotic corruption that live their lives only to criticize
Where is the invisible line that we must draw to create individual thought
8. Destiny

Time is a thing we must accept
The unexpected I sometimes fear.
Just when I feel there's no excuse for what happens,
Things fall into place
I know there is no way to avoid the pain that we must go through
to find the other half that is true
Destiny is what we all seek
Destiny was waiting for you and me
[Lead: Chuck]
I believe behind confusion awaits the truth for us
Past the obstacles we face
I value our life and trust
Years of questioning why things happen the way they do in life
Wishing that I could turn back time,

I know there is no way to avoid the pain that we must go through
to find the other half that is true

Trapped in a lost world of brutality
So weak are the ones that must rely on shock
to push this so called force that inspires their call
to be extreme so it seems is a mental crutch
To cover up for those that are completely out of touch
Say what you want, I know the truth when it comes to your kind
[Lead: Chuck]
In time we'll see who lasts
In time you will disappear
Who are you to question my sincerity
For now you are high on yourself
Drowning in your dreams of misguided hope
To be extreme so it seems is a mental crutch
To cover up for those that are completely out of touch
10. The Philosopher
Do you feel what I feel, see what I see, hear what I hear
There is a line you must draw between your dream world and reality
Do you live my life or share the breath I breathe
Lies feed your judgement of others
Behold how the blind lead each other
The philosopher
You know so much about nothing at all
[Lead: Chuck]
Ideas that fall under shadows of theories that stand tall
Thoughts that grow narrow upon being verbally released
Your mind is not your own, what sounds more mentally stimulating is how you make your choice
So you preach about how I'm supposed to be, yet you don't know your own sexuality
Lies feed your judgement of others
Behold how the blind lead each other
The philosopher
You know so much about nothing at all
Dude you are a legend
The "Trapped in a Corner" solo section is on of my favorite moments in all of Death's discography. First Andy put such virtuous lines on display and then Chuck absolutely unleashes. Awesome!
Virtuosic but also virtuous
These guys were on a different plain of enlightenment.
Love your profile pic, Kate Bush is just superb.

Hey, bro. Edit your comment and fix "plain" to "plane."
Their music is like a symphony. True musicians.
It's funny because he is also the reason I am going to get a fretless in the near future
Dude I feel you. Bought this album when it was released in 1993, on tape! (I didn't own a CD player back then). Haven't stopped listening to it since then, which makes it the album I played the most, hands down.
🤟
This is the real deal...............
yea.this album is so special.masterpiece of death metal
Even through my tiny little iPhone, every note from every instrument is clear, distinct, powerful, and present.
Don’t forget the fifth member of this band - Scott Burns, the only death metal producer who ever got it right.
The only death metal album I can listen non-stop from beginning to end. Total masterpiece. It gets better and better, year after year.
Yep same here.
Absolutamente!
There's a strain called Jealousy . Timeless Album .
Now listen to Symbolic, Human and TSOP
Easily one of the greatest metal albums of all time!
I can't count the many times I've sat just thinking "how can anyone come up with a riff/arrangement like THAT??"

....just to name a few - I'm awe-struck every single time I hear this album. Chuck was a genius like no other.
Every album from Death is great, but I feel a special attraction for this one. Andy Laroque did a really good job.
the guitar tracks are BOTH wrote by Chuck ( with some exceptions at solos ) . Andy was just a guest to make this album possible. Chuck said this in a video.
Juan Carlos Sevinones i love this album
Juan Carlos Sevinones I know what you mean
Oh fuck yeah brother Andy is an absolute pro in this album!
Yes, some of the solos here are King Diamond style but that's OK with me. It adds character! I like Symbolic more but this one is probably my second favorite.
Nobody mentions the bassist with his fretless escapades: he is a true genius
his fretless bass runs -melted my jeans -right off of my body !!! summona beetch!!!
We all love him, man! I Like him even better in The Fragile Art Of Existence, tho...
steve digorgio is AWESOME!!!!!
Steve is probably one of the most respected bass players, period. You're off it.
As respected as Steve DiGiorgio is, he does not hold the same level of popularity as some other bass players within extreme metal (like Alex Webster or Tony Choy) which is a shame because his work has always boundary pushing, specially in Sadus
This is my favorite Death album. Everything sounds just perfect
mine too probably
This band is the Mozart of metal
there is no comparison
Death > Mozart
@@Gordon3773 amen to that
@@Gordon3773 I imagine you don’t really listen to Mozart
This doesn't sound like Mozart at all, it's way close to Bach

More like "Complicated Time Signatures"
Cheesy Cola PLEASE MAKE THIS MAN TOP COMMENT
whats a time signature, i dont understand it in musical note terms
The number and type of notes each measure contains. For example, in a 4/4 time signature, the measure would contain 4 fourth notes. A 6/8 time signature contains 6 eighth notes.
The cool thing about that opening riff is it's so well written it tricked my ear into thinking it was in regular meter for YEARS then I actually looked at the tab and it's actually switching. Haha maybe it's because of Gene's regular hihat hits that come in and out, and I think that was a subconscious influence on a lot of the first material Im gonna release for my band Spectria starting this year. Death is a HUGE influence on me.
psych riffs written in 3/4 or 6/4 or something like that sound like triplets
The 'Mentally Blind' solo is awesome!
Chuck really was a genius...
every solo in this album is amazing
This came out when I was in high school. How lucky were we to be metal fans back then.
From
DEICIDE to CARCASS
PANTERA to SEPULTURA
CANNIBAL CORPSE. to SUFFOCATION.
OBITUARY to NAPALM DEATH.
METALLICA to BIOHAZARD
and everything in between.
They were all kicking off at the same time.
Everybody thinks this or that Death's albums is the best one. Just goes to show what an amazing musician Chuck was & how solid the complete output is
They're all diverse yet great in their own way. Just depends on what your preference is
It’s like Jazz death metal
jazz? lmao you probably never heard jazz.
@@matheusibanez I think he's talking about the complexity, not necessarely the sound
Don’t get too excited please
I mean if we're going to talk jazz Fusion influenced death metal then Cynic - Focus is the one and came out the same year as this. Sean and Paul arguably pushed Chuck towards this amazing sound beginning with Human, Chuck built off that with a forward thinking attitude for ITP and carried those progressive tendancies to the end of his career. Also the Watchtower influence had a part to play in this sound for sure.
@@henrywalton5967 a mayor 7th chord is not jazz
The Philosopher was the first song I learned how to play, this album brings back so many memories from childhood. Rip Chuck Schuldiner.
The Philosopher was your first!? Damn. Mine was Smoke on the Water XD.

Stubborness is a virtue.

Also Sean Reinert and Paul Masvidal on 'Human'.
Philosophic Metal
My favorite Death album.
The intro of "The Philosopher" comes to close in an absolute epic way a legendary death metal album.
The guitar VS bass duel at the end of The Philosopher needs to be louder. I wish they didn't slowly reduce the volume on that part. Such an epic duel!
Listen to the fadeout on Gene Hoglan’s version.
m.ruclips.net/video/eGope68pHf0/видео.html
This is a pure masterpiece of overall musicianship!! Not just skull "Crushing" death metal!!
There´s something spetacular on Chuck´s voice, not only the growling but also the constant harmonic that is part of his own singing.
This was his best year vocally
Best classical music album ever ( In the future that is ).
I still can't believe I listen to Death nearly 25 years after hearing them when 16 years old.
Sadly I have to report we haven't yet got the technology to bring Chuck back to this plane of existence..... :(
Jim H // THAT WOULD BE SO GREAT. \,,,/
Coroner R.I.P. is a Classical Metal Masterpiece
Got to toy with a rather expensive analog rig for playing vinyl.... Yeah..... This album is and so is Human were some of the building blocks for really putting technicalities where they weren't at that time in death metal. Let alone metal as a genre as a whole.
Yeah bro
Cant believe my mates and i lived off this album and human in highschool in the early 90s yet its still so fresh and technically brilliant.
Death shall live forever as the best.
That's the heritage of good music. Timeless, people will still discover this 100 years from now. I started listening to Death at 13 years of age and still do at 42.. Chucks legacy only gets stronger since his passing
Absolute Masterpiece!
Nice pic brah
+Billy Carlisle death and atheist are amazing
+go away they sure are a couple of my favorites
For me Symbolic and Spiritual Healing.
Mariusz Szifo I love all Death albums except the first two ones.
With the number of cool riffs in one song any other band would make an album. Trully stunning
Check out Atheist's "Unquestionable Presence"
No words to describe the genius of these guys.. hail to Chuck wherever you are
Best part: 0:00 - 40:19.
Jajaja

Very underrated comment.
Sí!
Who is Andy Larue? I know of an Andy Laroque.
Hahaha James I hoped somebody would say it! 😂😂😂
Andy LaRue? Wrong guy haha-and wrong instrument!!
It was AutoCorrect you freaks.
Totally agree!
Andy´s solo in Trapped in a Corner is in the top 5 best solos ever, period
I have this on vinyl and it sounds freakin amazing! 💀🤘🏻🎸
What an album, absolute masterpiece!
Whoever made the decision to remove the echo on the word "obsession" in Overactive Imagination should be slapped. Quit fucking around!
pretty sure it's the same guy who mixed and mastered it in 93: Alan Douches, pretty sure it was something forced with the remastering of the original tapes, it kills nothing is everything, but this has been out for 5 years now and I finally got over that fault
I can't find a legit download of it on the entire internet.
find it?
Ryan Everden nope
how about a physical copy? was it something relativity records re-released?
People let's not forget that this was recorded in 93! And the sound is still sick and beats most bands that come up nowadays.
Probably the absolute best way to end this album, with a solo battle fading away Chuck Vs. Steve
thats what i always thought
Last solo was not Chuck, but anyway it is great ending!
Sad part, it's like they leaving us in eternity.. while playing solos with each other.
Paul Pinargote --- it's one of the reasons that I'm still alive today. This album gave me a reason, and inspiration to live.
Gene Hoglan has a video of him playing the drums for The Philosopher and it has the full solos instead of the fade-out.
imagine if you didnt like Death. hard to believe.
"Overactive imagination" blows my mind over and over...
a masterpiece in every sense of the word....what andy and gene brought to this album along with steves bass lines complemented chucks vision 150%
I Agree 150%

one of the best albums of all time. certainly one of the best death metal albums of all time. might be my favorite death album
Amazing bass work and you can actually clearly hear it
I am 36 and I discovered Death in my later teens.

I miss my nigga Chuck too!
My favorite DEATH album. and I love all of the other as well. But there is something about this album that makes me love it 2% more than the others. I don't know if its Andy Laroque's playing. or Gene Hoglan's playing. Or the overall Composition. LONG LIVE TO DEATH.
This and Symbolic are pretty much tied as my favourite Death albums.
Same , this obliterates all others for something I can´t quite put my finger on .
"Nothing is Everything" is my favorite song of all Death work ! So intense ! Guitar, bass lines which are amazing ! and of course, Gene's talent !
On the first three lines Chuck's vocals are unusually heavy and extreme! Incredible experience...
Death is one of the few bands I know that pioneered not only one but two music genres.
Destroyed my air drums.

It's been 15 years today since we lost the legend. CRANK THIS SHIT UP.

Time is a thing we must accept
The unexpected I sometimes fear
Just when I feel there's no excuse for what happens
Things fall into place
I know there is no way to avoid the pain that we must go through
To find the other half that is true
Destiny is what we all seek
Destiny was waiting for you and me
I believe behind confusion awaits the truth for us
Past the obstacles we face
I value our life and trust
Years of questioning why things happen the way they do in life
Wishing that I could turn back time
So we could join our souls
