Richard Christy never gets the credit he deserves for this album. One of the most complete drummers in metal. Prog, death, thrash, jazzy at time, his drumming here is simply innovative. Richard: From what I remember, Chuck played me the opening riff for the song and just told me to go crazy and come up with a technical drum pattern to fit the riff. I can’t remember exactly how I came up with the drum pattern for that song, but usually I just listen to a riff and start playing along with it until I find something that fits musically with it. Chuck was very open about all of my drumming ideas and he loved when I would come up with crazy drum patterns that would fit his riffs. I remember when we were working on Spirit Crusher, we were laughing at how crazy the drumming stuff was in the drum and bass break on that song, it was always fun writing music with Chuck and we had a lot of laughs writing and rehearsing together. sickdrummermagazine.com/the-drummers/sick-drummer-hall-of-fame/richard-christy-talks-all-about-death/
@@ItsNotaTuhmah The part that I linked is completely random and irrational for a drummer's point of view, now there are only 2 options, it was either composed by a non drummer composer (Chuck) or it was composed by drummer who is also a mental madman (Perhaps Christy is one, I don't know)...
He speaks so well through his music and the technical genius is not overlooked by any means. What a blessing for us all that he decided to pursue his passion rather than give up and become a burger flipper at age 16..
I still can't give Richard Christie enough credit for the work he did on this album. There was a famous drummer who once said "the best drum parts are the ones that sound like they are about to fall completely apart at any moment but somehow stay together" and that's exactly what Richard Christie achieved on this album
Fucking true. This album has all the best riffs that would love to listen on an electric guitar 🎸🤘 Im not a fan of this kind of vocals but the guitar riffs are heavenly.

Chuck was so desperate to end Death and move on to Control Denied, that this album's lyrics and themes, all the way down to the title represent his anger and disappointment. He felt that Symbolic wasn't marketed well, and he hated being strictly associated with Death Metal. But I have to say, this album is the bomb. It was a blast to listen to, and a perfect finale for Death. Symbolic was supposed to be the final album, and Perennial Quest did a great job and kicks a ton of ass, but A Moment of Clarity is a beautiful ending for probably the most dramatic Death album ever. This album was an awesome goodbye from Death and I can't overstate just how great a job they did with this unique, powerful, aggressive, and dramatic album.
Most of the songs and lyrics were written for Control Denied. Was originally recorded (demo) with clean vocals -,not Chuck singing. However record company wouldn't release it unless was a Death record, hence Chuck did the vocals - this album is essentially the first Control Denied record.
@@tomobrien4965 Do you know if this album's lineup was always meant to be Death, or do you think they were supposed to be Control Denied with Chuck? What an awesome lineup; Shanon Hamm and Richard Christy are so awesome, and I also love Scott Clendenin's bass playing on this album.
Thanks for vocalizing the thought process - it is amazing that the lyrics make much more sense understanding his personal turmoil. True artist. Wrapping up this album on Sound of Perseverance - damn. 10 years ago it was the music hitting hard, now it is the lyrics combined with the music - timeless masterpiece.

Despite the name of the genre, death metal doesn't have to be gorey and shocking. There's plenty of bands that take death-elements to create beauty out of it.
I’ve talked shit about death metal for years but this I can actually fuck with. My apologies death metal fans I just don’t like the other bands that be way too heavy for way to fucken long and gets boring as hell.

It transcends most of his music. It's truly a Magnum Opus if there was ever one to be taken from Chuck. It's a massive evolution for Chuck. He evolved so much over the years, it's really incredible when you get his first album he did at age 17 and then listen to this album. Dude really is next level. One of the funniest things about this album for me is that Chuck came from working with legends like Gene Hoglan, Steve DiGiorgio, Andy LaRocque, etc. And for his last Death album he picked up 3 guys literally no one knew about and made one of the best metal albums ever (and the best Death album, in my opinion)
Even if Chuck would have lived, this would have been his last death metal album. He said so himself, he was tired of the harsh vocals. I loved how he progressed not only as a musician and a song writer, but as a human too. R.I.P. Chuck :(
drummerdude0515 yes but his mom said in a interview I read that she believes he would’ve went back to death after a little while, he just needed a break she said
Yeah chuck wanted symbolic to be the last death album and had written the majority of this album to be control denied stuff but relapse records said one last death album was owed to them . This album changed my life as a young dude. Can’t say I feel the same about any of the control denied stuff. Rip chuck .
This is absolutely the best Death album. Makes me even more sad and mad that Chuck is gone. He perfected his art in this album, who knows how amazing his later work could have been. Rest in peace.
I do prefer Human, ITP, and Symbolic. Great album though. Chuck kinda took the Death sound as far as he could which is why he wanted a different vocalist and more progressive song structures. It would've been interesting to see what he came up with next.
Right? My favorite spacecraft is the one they're planning to send to Uranus called 'Erections at an Animal Autopsy'-- Or Erections for short. They're running out of album names! Thousands of good extreme metal albums, billions of stars.
It gives me goosebumps every time I play it with my friend. It gets so much more intense meaning when you study the rhythm and everything and then try to play it yourself. So awesome track!
This album will continue to rule and reign throughout the time. it's simply beyond humanity. not every ear is blessed enough to capture the sound and not every mind is capable to comprehend what is actually happening there, beyond and below the insane riffage and drum play. Kudos to the ones who could understand this madness. who can pry the riffs open and access the soul of the music. if you do that you'll have an undying companion which you can rely on, for the rest of your days. This is one of the 12/10 albums, every second is packed with emotion, inspiration and invention, plus, of course, impeccable technique from all the players involved.
same here man. a friend of mine played crystal mountain for me once and I looked up death a few days later, clicked on this album and it opened up my musical world to death metal, black metal, and to some extent thrash as well
This album is my favorite of all bands that I've heard in my life. Chuck is the a monster of a guitar and a composer as well. All his trajectory as a musician you can really understand the true meaning of musical evolution. The day I read in an old metal magazine that I signed called Rock Brigade (brazil) that he had died was a very painful impact, I imagined what would come after the Sound of Perseverance or even a new Control Denied album. R.I.P Chuck - thank you for letting us so much masterpieces. And Richard Christy is a F** Monster!
This album is my favourite Death album. It really helped me through some tough times this year, 3 emergency surgeries- it pushed me to keep going. 'Voice of the Soul' was the first thing I listened to once I woke from the first op, because I knew it would calm me. Thank you, Chuck.
I was a late comer to DEATH and something in the fine mix of agressive bu not over the top vocals + guitar riffs + instrumental sequences + mixing choices + go figure what else made me an instant fan. My first listen was "Humans", with its tracks "The flesh and the power it holds" and most of all "Lack of comprehension". My face melted. Sucks that he died so young.
It's because it's not your typical Deathmetal album. Some parts actually have strung together major cords and other parts could fit right into a Rentals album. I like it but I can see where a true DM guy would not
I’ve been slowly becoming a fan for a while now, I think this solidifies it. First symbolic, then individual thought patterns, yeah this album is getting downloaded next. Edit 8 Months later: I own all 7 Death albums on unplayed vinyl! Some of them colored, some just black. This band is beyond perfection, RIP Chuck.
If you love he technical feel and timing changes, I highly suggest you check out Carcass; Descanting the Insalubrious. Also, upon first listen; read the lyrics along with the music and you'll experience true theatrical horror music as it was intended; later named Heavy Metal. Carcass, much like Death created a subculture within the metal industry and forged an entire legion of bands that laid themselves bare by offering tribute, plagiarism and straight out copying. Carcass belongs on the same shelf as Death.
@@zysis Oh man you’d be happy to know I’m a major Carcass fan! Somehow I haven’t heard Swansong yet, but the rest of their material is on my phone, and I bought Torn Arteries on vinyl recently. This album completely changed my life when it came out back in highschool. Never heard music like chucks before and never will. When Painkiller comes on, it’s bittersweet. I get sad because it means the album is wrapping up. What a way to do it though. Every song is a journey with a capital J, every riff puts pictures in my head, the musicianship and clarity in this recording make it stand out for me as an absolute #1. If I could only hear one album for the rest of my life, I’d gladly pick TSOP and be content.
João Correia, I would not go as far as to say this particular Death album is the most influential death metal album. However, Death's first 3-4 albums were factually profoundly inspirational.
"When you think of me in your multidimensional mind, try and wash the "evil" from your mind and open it. When you taste the truth you will see like others before me, to you I am past, a story to tell tell it." Let's tell the story!
This is the only metal album that brings tears to my eyes... I may be wrong, but I feel that this album is based on Chuck's fight with the cancer that finally killed him... he deserves as much as any other to be in the rock n roll hall of fame... a great American artist that was a pioneer of a generation...
Yeah Voice of the Soul... It's just... I sometimes get teary with both happiness and sadness. It's a really strange feeling but my god, if anyone has reached immortality in the very souls of other beings, this man has engraved his name on my heart. I can't begin to describe how Chuck has made me feel over the years.
Hahahahaha I'm a drummer and jezz I don't know one that would not want to cover Sound of Perseverance album. It's just amazing! Great, fun and tec music.
Zamek2004 My band doesn’t have a drummer. Which is lame. But, we can just spend a couple hours programming a drum machine. Which sucks, because as a bassist, I love changing tempo
Haven't listened to Death in ages. This sounds so so much better now as an adult with a different perspective. I have so much more of an appreciation for Chuck's work as an older man. 🤘🏽
Ocean Sage That's true, but also a lot of commercial crap. And I noticed that some good bands that joined Nuclear Blast have changed their sound in favour of a more commercial one (easy-listening chorus, less complex songs, cliché videos). I think Nuclear Blast is the "pop" side of metal. Of course this doesn't apply to all bands in Nuclear Blast.
onewithmyself But he hasnt had a stable lineup... And i believe it involved different musicians I mean the second band. Maybe im wrong lol. The only thing I read is their whole wikipedia page
onewithmyself Oh ok. I will have to check out their early stuff too, cause 7 albums in that amount of time is indeed very good... But I believe the early albums aren't so good. Also, persuming you're a death metal fan, what do you think of a band called Manokin?
I think people don't talk enough about how awesome chuck's vocals are on this, because of how awesome the rest is. The vocals sound much better than most extreme metal bands'.
Chuck's vocals are at their all-time best on the Painkiller cover. I think he finally reached the zenith of his love for traditional heavy metal, blended with his extreme style. This is straight metal perfection. RIP Chuck Schuldiner.

I almost deliberately avoided death metal as a genre (preferred metal with clean vocal), but came across this masterpiece and it is such an unexpected sensation.
I would suggest Opeth, I think you will like it. It's considered death/prog metal with both clean and growl vocals, a truly amazing band. Although Death will always be king ! RIP Chuck
It's like written on my DNA with thousands of riffs and with all those magical endless notes! If someone would pause the play, it continues in my head. And don't click play man -i can't stop listening until entire album is over! Even the most powerfull and hardest part of a Chuck tune, there is always a BLUE feeling which never gets old. It's like when you think that you are just standing (listening metal), but when there is also river of emotions flowing under your knees... So, it's not just metal. It's never just a genre. It's tender, deep, soulful piece of art. It's CHUCK's hearth! It's ours...
Listening to this masterpiece in the middle of 2022 directly from Brazil!! A work of metal art!! Sounds like the first time I've heard it!! This album still excites me to this day! Chuck genius!!!!
Realmente esse trabalho do Chuck é notavelmente impecável, som cadenciado Aki no Brasil tem milhares de fans escondidos, pois nós do metal vivemos nas sombras....!
musical genius, lyrical genius, it astonishes me how people think metal is just screaming and hitting a guitar, yet 90% of the time they listen to people who can't sing, and use digital "instruments" to make up for a lack of talent, while guys like Death are given only a fraction of their credit when they could easily blow them out of the water through their technical ability on actual instruments. these guys fucking rule, Chuck may be gone but his impact on extreme metal will be felt for the rest of time
FUCKING A! If guys like Chuck, Dimebag, Peter Steele, among other influential artists, we probably wouldn't have all this kind of mainstream shit nowadays.
today's music doesn't take talent and it sucks. they all sing about the same shit. pop sings about casual shit and love while hip hop sings about whores money and trap is basically just pure shit...
@HazyMan yeah, while most of death metal sings about gore and problems of the world and shit like that.Sincerely, lately I'd much rather prefer listening to some Migos than the ever complaining metal bands. And for the original comment, "actual instruments" are overrated and technical ability means shit when you can't write a catchy riff or a memorable hook. Stop being so goddamn stubborn and close minded in your singular musical cavity named metal and widen your horizons, even the top 40 has some pretty groovy stuff in it. That's why people can't stand metalheads, we're a bunch of arrogant ingrates who think music is something more than just fucking music, and metal is the one genre to rule them all, cause to be fair, metal stopped being relevant a couple of years ago.
My personal fav Death album, after Human (for its harmonic undertones) and Spiritual Healing (for its raw heaviness). Loved the technical direction the crew went with on this title. I can only imagine how much more technical their work would have evolved, had Chuck not passed.
Ren well the problem is that this was going to be their last album regardless. Actually Symbolic was supposed to be their last album, but due to contractual obligations with their record company they had to made one more album with the name “Death”. All these songs from this album were supposed to be used on Chuck’s new project, Control Denied. There are even a couple demos of chuck singing some songs with clean vocals. If you want to listen more stuff similar to this check out The Fragile Art of Existence from Control Denied, actual last album Chuck ever made. It basically the same lineup as this album plus Tim Aymar on vocals.
@@landinization First impressions: The music is undeniably Mr. Schuldiner, and I completely appreciate and respect Tim's vocal talent, but I'll have to give 'er a few runs and see if I can get used to it. Ren It is hard to adjust since it is pretty much Chuck’s music but without the vocals, so it takes away the death metal side, and it is 100% a progressive metal album. It will grow on you, the album has some bangers. Glad that you were able to listen to it, you’re welcome man!
The production of this album is insanely good. The guitar tone is so crunchy and clear. The opening of Story To Tell kicks me in the teeth every time and I love it.
Chuck was the nicest guy too, I only met him once, guy just loved metal and everyone around him - was super cool to everyone even the loners at parties
Chuck changed somehow around 91-92. He was quite the asshole before that and then something changed, maybe he matured and became a pretty cool guy. He also changed the lyric subjects around that time.
This album continues to sound ahead of this time! And it was released 22 years ago! Chuck has to be the best heavy music composer of all time! An honorable salvation for Thomas Forsberg \m/

A total masterpiece from start to end. Chuck Schuldiner was one of the best musicians to ever walk on planet Earth. PERIOD.

He speaks so well through his music and the technical genius is not overlooked by any means. What a blessing for us all that he decided to pursue his passion rather than give up and become a burger flipper at age 16..

@Antonio Rodriguez delete your comment before i start fan-girling!
The sound of serenity! His music soothes me like nothing else!
I still can't give Richard Christie enough credit for the work he did on this album.
There was a famous drummer who once said "the best drum parts are the ones that sound like they are about to fall completely apart at any moment but somehow stay together" and that's exactly what Richard Christie achieved on this album
N.B. did Richard play on any other Death recordings/ albums?
kawasaki whip two no but he played on chucks next project “control denied” and did all the drums on their album “fragile art of existence”
Thanks for the quote fellow Metalhead, and thanks for the info. bless you, best wishes and keep rockin'
@Pup Pup Man Agreed!
Rick Rubin said that
It's a compilation of Chuck's best riffs, ideas and licks. Not even a single part is weak.
He was a genius, he exhaled excellent riffs.
That is a fact. They're all soooooooo good. The drumming from Richard is just the icing on the cake.
Fucking true. This album has all the best riffs that would love to listen on an electric guitar 🎸🤘
Im not a fan of this kind of vocals but the guitar riffs are heavenly.

this is the ultimate best Death Prog record of all time. Still today there is nothing like it.
Check out Blackwater Park or Ghost Reveries by Opeth, they're incredible
Morningrise and Still Life by far the better Opeth albums
If I was going to recommend a good Death metal band with a touch of prog I'd say Carbonized myself
@@stefanoorlando2564 I love Opeth just aslong as you aren't comparing them to Chuck Schuldiner.

I think Alkaloid with Liquid anatomy set the new standard along side with Rivers of Nihil's Where the owls know my name album.
The drumming on this album is off the charts!
Richard played his ass off because he needed to outdo Gene. His performance here was sick
Richard was a damn octopus on this album.

Im sorry but the drumming is not always accurate here

Symbolic is the best Death album bro.
También el mío.
This is my favorite album all times!!!
you're right way, mine too, this is best album!
It's definitely Symbolic or this one for me. Hard to choose between two perfect albums.
I wish voice of the soul would never end..
I have the CD and repeat that track a few times before moving on.
Voice of the soul never die. Until, the last of us stop to listening. I never will... Thanks Chuck
Yes
I played that piece ones life with one of my bands and the crowd went crazy...didn't expect this and will never forget this for sure!
I didnt knew this side of the story. Thank you for the information.
Very well summed up.

01 - SCAVENGER OF HUMAN SORROW
What pain will it take to satisfy
Your sick appetite, go in for the kill
Always in sight-prey
The time always right-feast
Feed on the pain-taste
Sorrow made flesh-sweet
Live how you want, just don't feed on me
If you doubt what I say, I will make you believe
Shallow are words from those who starve
For a dream, not their own to slash and scar
Big words, small mind behind the pain, you will find
A scavenger of human sorrow, scavenger
Abstract theory, the weapon of choice used by scavenger
Of human sorrow, scavenger
So, you have traveled far across the sea
To spread your written brand of misery
Always in sight-prey
The time always right-feast
Feed on the pain-taste
Sorrow made flesh-sweet
Live how you want, just don't feed on me
If you doubt what I say, I will make you believe
Shallow are words from those who starve
For a dream, not their own to slash and scar
Big words, small mind, behind the pain, you will find
A scavenger of human sorrow, scavenger
Abstract theory, the weapon of choice used by a scavenger
Of human sorrow, scavenger
02 - BITE THE PAIN
Look down at the body
You may see no trace of wounds
But in the eye, the eye of the beholder
One cannot assume
Not a drop of blood is drawn, but you know how it bleeds
Beware of the sharp edged weapon called human being
It is a shield of passion and strong will
From this, I am the victor instead of the kill
I will not feed your hunger, instead I bite the pain
Looking not back, but forward, I bite down hard
Try to cover up the trail of deceit
And daggers spawned from your soul
Acid, the tears of remorse flow in vain
Too late for regrets save it for the next ill fated game
It is a shield of passion and strong will
From this, I am the victor instead of the kill
I will not feed your hunger, instead I bite the pain
Looking not back, but forward, I bite down hard
03 - SPIRIT CRUSHER
It comes from the depths of a place
Unknown to the keeper of dreams
If it could then it would steal the sun and the moon
From the sky, beware
Human at sight, monster at heart
Don't let it inside it could tear you right apart
No guilt, it feeds in plain sight, spirit crusher
Stay strong and hold on tight, spirit crusher
Speaking in killing words
The vicious kind that crush and kill
No mercy, its pleasure to taste
The blood that it bled
When it's time to feed, to fulfill the need to
Consume a breath, some will rise standing tall
Breathing out all the breath from
The voice of a soul
Human at sight, monster at heart
Don't let it inside it could tear you right apart
No guilt, it feeds in plain sight, spirit crusher
Stay strong and hold on tight, spirit crusher
Speaking in killing words
The vicious kind that crush and kill
04 - STORY TO TELL
Drifting into the lives seep into the soul
Where emotions hide
Dark skies were beating me down with shadows
Of deceit slashing at trust till it forever bleeds
With doubt, with pain, with trust is pain
When you think of me in your multidimensional mind
Try and wash the "evil" from your mind and open it
When you taste the truth, you will see like others before me
To you, I am past, a story to tell, tell it
You may think you own the end
Take another close look at the script
Of sadness etched in the book
Dark skies were beating me down with shadows
Of deceit slashing at trust till it forever bleeds
With doubt, with pain, with trust is pain
When you think of me in your multidimensional mind
Try and wash the "evil" from your mind and open it
When you taste the truth, you will see like others before me
To you, I am past, a story to tell, tell it
05 - FLESH AND THE POWER IT HOLDS
I told you once, but I will say it again
When you live the flesh, it’s the beginning of the end
It will take you in, it will spit you out
Behold the flesh and the power it holds
Passion is a poison laced with pleasure bitter sweet
One of many faces that hide deep beneath
It will take you in, it will spit you out
Behold the flesh and the power it holds
Touch, taste, breathe, consumed
Deja-vu, already knew from the first encounter
But know I know to let go of words to speak no more
Like a wind upon your face, you can't see it, but you know it's there
When beauty shows its ugly face, just be prepared
Passion burns like fire carried by the wind
The end of a time, a time to begin
It will take you in, it will spit you out
Behold the flesh and the power it holds
It builds you up one way and tears
You right back down, a time to begin the end of a time
It will take you in, it will spit you out
Behold the flesh and the power it holds
Touch, taste, breathe, consumed
Deja-vu, already knew from the first encounter
But know I know to let go of words to speak no more
Like a wind upon your face, you can't see it, but you know it's there
When beauty shows its ugly face, just be prepared
06 - VOICE OF THE SOUL
Instrumental
07 - TO FORGIVE IS TO SUFFER
Throughout our time, a thought escapes us
To enforce a word, no
Holding on to pain, it may seem to some
The easy way to say o.k., twist your knife a little deeper
Words so sharp, actions dark hide the blade of the deceiver
Enforce the words no more, be free
Alone you might just find serenity
To accept another day we choose
To give away another piece of life
To forgive is to suffer
Once or twice is kind, three or four is blind
It is not the end yet a way to begin
The power of words, both good and bad
The easy way to say o.k., twist your knife a little deeper
Words so sharp, actions dark hide the blade of the deceiver
Enforce the words no more, be free
Alone you might just find serenity
To accept another day we choose
To give away another piece of life
To forgive is to suffer
08 - A MOMENT OF CLARITY
I would describe it as an invisible darkness
Casting a shadow, a blinding black
Guarded by hope, my soul is kept safe from the bloody claws
Look to beyond, what vision lets me see
Time after time, unneeded misery
My dreams I own, no price for you
I grip them tight and hope for sight
Open my eyes wide to see a moment of clarity
Confusion gone, it's in your hands, your turn to ask why
Life is like a mystery with many clues, but with few answers
To tell us what it is
That we can do to look ror messages that keep us from the truth
Look to beyond, what vision lets me see
Time after time, unneeded misery
My dreams I own. no price for you
I grip them tight and hope for sight
Open my eyes wide to see a moment of clarity
Confusion gone, it's in your hands, your turn to ask why
09 - PAINKILLER [Judas Priest Cover]
Faster than a bullet, terrifying scream
Enraged and full of anger, he's half man and half machine
Rides the Metal Monster, breathing smoke and fire
Closing in with vengeance soaring high
He is the Painkiller
This is the Painkiller
Planets devastated, mankind's on its knees
A saviour comes from out the skies in answer to their pleas
Through boiling clouds of thunder, blasting bolts of steel
Evils going under deadly wheels
He is the Painkiller
This is the Painkiller
Faster than a lazer bullet, louder than an atom bomb
Chromium plated boiling metal, brighter than a thousand suns
Flying high on rapture, stronger free and brave
Nevermore encaptured, they've been brought back from the grave
With mankind resurrected, forever to survive
Returns from Armageddon to the skies
He is the Painkiller
This is the Painkiller
Wings of steel Painkiller
Deadly wheels Painkiller

Despite the name of the genre, death metal doesn't have to be gorey and shocking. There's plenty of bands that take death-elements to create beauty out of it.
I’ve talked shit about death metal for years but this I can actually fuck with. My apologies death metal fans I just don’t like the other bands that be way too heavy for way to fucken long and gets boring as hell.

Also, while not quite death metal (these are either thrash metal on the extreme side or death thrash), I highly recommend checking out Dark Angel, Possessed, Sadus, Demolition Hammer, Morbid Saint, Opprobrium, Messiah, Master, Protector, and Necrodeath, they are really good, they kick a lot of ass, and they will help ease you into the more extreme stuff.
I've listened to Voice Of The Soul so many times, it is absolutely amazing and beautiful. Rest In Peace Chuck Schuldiner.
It transcends most of his music. It's truly a Magnum Opus if there was ever one to be taken from Chuck. It's a massive evolution for Chuck. He evolved so much over the years, it's really incredible when you get his first album he did at age 17 and then listen to this album. Dude really is next level. He never sold out, he never compromised. A real warrior.
He rests, completely freed of the flesh, and the power it held

If you love he technical feel and timing changes, I highly suggest you check out Carcass; Descanting the Insalubrious. Also, upon first listen; read the lyrics along with the music and you'll experience true theatrical horror music as it was intended; later named Heavy Metal. Carcass belongs on the same shelf as Death.

Funny that the band themselves don’t even like that record at this point haha.
Alright now 4 months later, were the vinyl played?
@@MetaKarpp Yes, you can trust they’ve all been played a handful of times. Honestly between the two Death eras, I think Leprosy and Human are my most played. Everything they created was amazing though!
chuck is the only person i haven't met that i feel sad about passing away. his music is the most meaningful thing i've heard. people describe him as an optimistic person but themes and lyrics of his songs are very dark and real. he's ultimate bloomer. thank you chuck for your philosophical music
RIP Chuck, 20 years later and still inspiring millions 🤘

This album completely changed my life when it came out back in highschool. Never heard music like chucks before and never will. When Painkiller comes on, it’s bittersweet. I get sad because it means the album is wrapping up. What a way to do it though. Every song is a journey with a capital J, every riff puts pictures in my head, the musicianship and clarity in this recording make it stand out for me as an absolute #1. If I could only hear one album for the rest of my life, I’d gladly pick TSOP and be content.
What a masterpiece, my people. Chuck, you still alive in our hearts.
Best death metal band of all time. PERIOD
I agree!
Digy Metal I guess
Just no, but is a great band
Most influential? Sure. Best? Nope, not in my opinion.
João Correia, I would not go as far as to say this particular Death album is the most influential death metal album.
However, Death's first 3-4 albums were factually profoundly inspirational.
"When you think of me in your
multidimensional mind, try and wash the
"evil" from your mind and open it.
When you taste the truth you will
see like others before me, to you
I am past, a story to tell
tell it."
Let's tell the story!
I always come back to this masterpiece and when I do I find awesome details I hadn't noticed before.
Best Death metal album of all time
excuse my elitist attitude :p but this is more thrash than death metal. there's quite a big difference friendo
+kaz dooley I think it's more like a mixture between thrash-death and technical death metal, with a few elements of progressive metal
Of course it's death metal. Probably not the modern death metal you listen to, but death metal nonetheless.
For me it is the transition from thrash, like Slayer, to the Death Metal we know now.
Actually this was meant to be progressive metal except the vocal
This is the only metal album that brings tears to my eyes... I may be wrong, but I feel that this album is based on Chuck's fight with the cancer that finally killed him... he deserves as much as any other to be in the rock n roll hall of fame... a great American artist that was a pioneer of a generation...
Chuck did not know he had cancer yet.
Control denied he knew
Yeah Voice of the Soul... It's just... I sometimes get teary with both happiness and sadness. It's a really strange feeling but my god, if anyone has reached immortality in the very souls of other beings, this man has engraved his name on my heart. I can't begin to describe how Chuck has made me feel over the years.
@@denverwood5290 this is surprising to me. I always thought this album was about (his) illness/impending mortality.

It's great but its really hard
My favorite of all Death albums!! So much emotion and virtuosity.
This album and this band never ceases to amaze me.

Haven't listened to Death in ages. This sounds so so much better now as an adult with a different perspective. I have so much more of an appreciation for Chuck's work as an older man. 🤘🏽
Same here. He was very mature for his age. Blows my mind how he is no longer here. Missed for sure. Miss you Chuck.
Relapse is still incredible. Death rule. Amazing album. Flesh and the Power It Holds has some ridiculously complex songwriting.
+Ocean Sage Along with Napalm, Roadrunner and Nuclear Blast.
+Matthias Tammekivi Earache and metalblade
+Matthias Tammekivi Nuclear Blast quite sucks actually.
Thrashmetalkicksass Nuclear Blast has so many incredible bands though.
This is probably my favorite death metal album of all time.
Hahah this MUST BE
this album is great but you should check out Still Life by Opeth

DEATH \m/
for sure
FUCK YES... ONLY DEATH ACHIEVED THAT!!!!!
Um... Rhapsody or maybe Blind guardian... Another thing is Death has like only 6 albums right?
onewithmyself But he hasnt had a stable lineup...
I can actually make them out. Not all. But repeat a few times with the lyrics pulled up
His vocals pleasantly drowns out the lies and cheerleading of the political landscape as much as the music kicks a$$ to get up and get to work!
Chuck's vocals are at their all-time best on the Painkiller cover. I think he finally reached the zenith of his love for traditional heavy metal, blended with his extreme style. This is straight metal perfection. RIP Chuck Schuldiner.

One of the best and extreme album of all time in the history of music.
This is not extreme at all. Just saying.
@@mrdeathamore careful, the entry level kiddies are gonna throw a fit
You must not listen to much metal if you think this is extreme.
I dont get it ? So the more your listen to extrême metal the more is good? Same logic for mayonnaise and you have à disaster. Is this a contest ? How old are you ? 9 ?
I almost deliberately avoided death metal as a genre (preferred metal with clean vocal), but came across this masterpiece and it is such an unexpected sensation.
Now you have crossed over to screams, growls and shrieks....and there is no turning back now 😂🤘
I would suggest Opeth, I think you will like it. It's considered death/prog metal with both clean and growl vocals, a truly amazing band. Although Death will always be king ! RIP Chuck
@@mjsiriusindustries4147 on my exploration list, thank you.
Almost 20 years later, and I get goosebumps all over my body from each and every song. SBG and this are my fav Death albums.
Saw them in 98', this album's tour. Played all tracks way faster than the studio versions.
ItsNotaTuhmah noticed that with a live 96 tour album of sepultura as well
It's like written on my DNA with thousands of riffs and with all those magical endless notes!
Except 'Painkiller' ofc. Besides, it's not belongs to Chuck and i can't stand screams etc. Always skipping ^^
That was poetry man, love from México. Hail Chuck Schuldiner! beyond enthropy's devouring walk!
Listening to this masterpiece in the middle of 2022 directly from Brazil!! A work of metal art!! Sounds like the first time I've heard it!! This album still excites me to this day! Chuck genius!!!!
Me too 🤜🤛
Obra de arte. 🖤🤘🏻
Realmente esse trabalho do Chuck é notavelmente impecável, som cadenciado Aki no Brasil tem milhares de fans escondidos, pois nós do metal vivemos nas sombras....!
Chuck wasn’t just the creator of death metal, he was a poet to, this album really dark and poetic and gruesome and gory
Every riff in this hypes me up so much.
I want to hear voice of the soul for the first time forever.
instead of the "I don't like" button they had to put "I don't understand shit about music and I'm not ashamed of it"
_We lost both Chuck and Scott, R.I.P. brothers! _*_Death until Death!_*
musical genius, lyrical genius, it astonishes me how people think metal is just screaming and hitting a guitar, yet 90% of the time they listen to people who can't sing, and use digital "instruments" to make up for a lack of talent, while guys like Death are given only a fraction of their credit when they could easily blow them out of the water through their technical ability on actual instruments. these guys fucking rule, Chuck may be gone but his impact on extreme metal will be felt for the rest of time
FUCKING A! If guys like Chuck, Dimebag, Peter Steele, among other influential artists, we probably wouldn't have all this kind of mainstream shit nowadays.
electronic artists, producers, rappers and hiphop producers are all artists, too, dude, all takes different kinds of talent.
today's music doesn't take talent and it sucks. they all sing about the same shit. pop sings about casual shit and love while hip hop sings about whores money and trap is basically just pure shit...
What an epic comment! Everything is true. \m/
@@landinization Excellent Intel, mate. I had no idea about Chuck's new project. Absolutely I'll check it out immediately!
Thanks brother.
@@landinization First impressions: The music is undeniably Mr. Schuldiner, and I completely appreciate and respect Tim's vocal talent, but I'll have to give 'er a few runs and see if I can get used to it. Just doesn't fit the musical style at all for me, but neither did Confessor, until I listened to the album 'Condemned' a few times...now I'm in love with it. Hope same happens with Fragile . Thanks again for the info, man.
Check out Vektor if you like Death
You won't regret it
Chuck changed somehow around 91-92.

In my humble opinion its one of the peaks of music and art of all time
@L. Lazman i understand only that what i understand, and what not i don't, thats why i have to be humble
I didn't say i am humble. I presented this opinion as humble to highlight the fact there are no real criteria for 'best' in art. I wouldn't be able to support it this opinion with anything except my subjective feeling. Thats why the opinion was humble, and i am not, cos i can differentiate those things, got it Dr. Phil?
@L. Lazman sometimes im humble, sometimes i m not, sometimes i just say im humble but i am not, and sometimes i think i am humble but someone on youtube comments exposes me. that life. I understand that u said i have a good understanding of art. i gave u a like for it.
