30:53 - The Low Life solo exchange going Murphy->Chuck->Murphy->Chuck->Murphy->Chuck is the greatest thing ever. Murphy was a huge step up over Rick Rozz.
They successfully replicated the illustration style of Christian rags like Awake! and The Watchtower. The inspiration for the pastor was allegedly Chilean TV host Don Francisco.
Following the musical progression of Chuck was one of my favourite things in life. Still sleep in a Death t-shirt. The irony of his songs will never be lost. Death is life...
+Luis Sanchez history, not story. A story is a tale, a narration. History, on the other hand, is the account of facts that happen in reality as time flows inexorably into eternity.
Same here, I found it after 20 years of collecting dust and played it in the only cassette player I have now, the car. Listened to the whole thing and marvelled at how great it still is.
You know why this is my favourite album because there are no emotional walls in this one. It's completely honest, raw, unguarded, uncorrupted, genuine, boldly imperfect, crudely beautiful, just a man, his guitar and his honest thoughts
Without doubt a masterpiece but I would not say it´s raw and imperfect, on the contrary: every detail is perfectly planned and esecuted (as in every Death album)
Love how Chuck began lyrically going a lot deeper starting on this album than any other Death Metal band was going along with technically being above the rest too. Writing about drug addiction, abortion, religious hypocrisy.
It seems to me like the first 3 Death albums all focus on some kind of horror aspect; Scream Bloody Gore was about fantasy horror (zombies, gore, etc.), Leprosy was about real life horror (death, disease, suicide, etc.), and this album was about horror of society with serious social issues. From Human onwards it was more about life issues in general...at least that's how I see it. I don't care what anyone says, Chuck was a legendary musician.
24:35 is beautiful death metal writing. The chorus pad, the tapping on guitars, the evil-sounding slide of the bass plus the reverb on the vocals saying "Spiritual Healing". It's hypnotic, ceremonial and masterful.
All my life they try to"Heal my Spirit"!My face should be on the cover...But as much they try I always have for them surprises and giving hell with Chuck's riffs&vocals at mine home cinema great speakers 😁🔥💥...(Olia my mother)...
Still sounds out of this world 26 years on...I was at college when I bought this & remember staring at it longingly, willing the day to be over so I could go home & listen. Always thought the cover was genius for a death metal LP, bright colour palette, such a refreshing change from gore & skulls, lol. Incredible music, I absolutely IDOLISED Death back then & still think pretty highly of them now.
The day I bought this on cassette I couldn't stop listening too it. I listened to it all night tripping my balls off with a large group of friends. Achieving instant cult status of course!
@@eriksenbriggs Scream Bloody Gore is a great album. I think my least favorite Death album is The Sound of Perseverance, it's too technical for my taste.
@@eriksenbriggs It's definitely underrated but there's something special about the Horror-movie inspired melodies in Scream Bloody Gore. I like all Death albums anyway. This sounds mostly like Leprosy but it sorta has more Thrash influence and also some of the topics and ambiences later found in albums like Human or ITP. The drums have some passage that sound quite different from the first 2 albums.
@@qwerty975 Most metalheads hate Megadeth because of the vocals. Me too. I think Ian's vocals on this record will fit Megadeth's music a hundred times better ruclips.net/video/04O-B5aAcqE/видео.html.
@@user-pdogiP78V well, you enjoy death metal vocals, but simultaneously hate dave mustaine's voice? Yeah, he is not perfect, but his voice suits the type of music his band plays + political lyrics. It's really not that bad, personally I love it, check out his song addicted to chaos, he sang very well, one of my all time favs.
+Mattulaak I didn't even go to that timestamp to know exactly what you were talking about just by the description :p haha classic death metal riff, and what is even more amazing is that this riff was written back in 1984 and used in their "Death by metal" demo way back when they were going by the name Mantas.
Right, my fave part starts at 24:35 (no surprise), and it's the best Death's album to me. There are a lot of great moments here anyway, including mentioned excellent solos. See also 8:25 14:14 15:30 30:01 31:33 35:53 39:47
Mattulaak guitar Playing and Chuck voice is only good things, but i dont know, somekinda way this is alittle dissapointing album, compare, human masterpiece.. but James Murphy do always very good job..
Morbid Angel are probably equally as important but Death are my essential 1st generation death metal band and Spiritual Healing is probably my favourite. It never gets old and I never get tired of listening to it.
@jonebundy He has a point thou. Chuck got it all started. Who knows IF death metal would have been the same had DEATH not gotten the ball rolling first.
The later Death albums sounded different, but in no way bad. Early Death albums have some of the best raw-as-fuck death metal around, and later Death albums have some of the most untouchable prog/tech death metal ever written.
James Murphy's guitar solos on this album are simply awesome. That guy can sure play. Chuck S was no slouch either. A cracking Death Metal album that pisses on all the latter day crap.
I WAS just gonna post his name here, Murphy was the Eddie Van Halen of Death Metal back in the day. Played in so many different bands and every one of those albums was awesome
my top 7 metal albums: 1. Rust in peace 2. Ride the lightning 3. Coma of souls 4. Reign in blood 5. Spiritual Healing 6. Arise 7. Practice what you preach
This is the first Death album I listened to. It was the album cover that initially intrigued me. It's menacing with technically nothing menacing happening. You can feel the scumbaggery. Then of course, the music blew everything away.
Absolutely hands down an extremely awesome crushingly dam good Death Metal band. DEATH and CONTROLLED DENIED shall forever remain at the top of my all time favorite metal bands of all times
I remember as a Death fan, how i rushed to get this when it came out. It was so ahead of its time.... That sound .... Never heard anything like it- ... Mindblown...
Death was the best death metal band ever!! Chuck was a metal genius.. and this is one of the best death metal albums to ever hit planet earth.. thanks for sharing.. Cheers from Cincinnati Ohio USA.. RIP chuck schuldiner..
Tengo debilidad por este disco, Conocí a Death con este álbum grabado con muy mala calidad en un casette que me prestó un colega y me atrapó hasta mi último aliento. Gracias Chuck por hacer tanto por el metal, nunca te olvidaremos.
The drums sound so much better than on the previous album Leprosy. That was a shortcoming in the 1980s. The studio technology was sometimes poorly used and the more brutal, faster Speed, Thrash and Death Metal was perhaps not taken seriously yet. In my opinion, 1988 was the breakthrough year. Slayers South of Heaven had a completely new sound that is still timeless today.
Love every Death album, and have been a huge fan since hearing them for the first time back in 1987. I understand the progression over the course of Chuck's career and the ever increasing complexity he and his bandmates showed from album to album. I feel like its in vogue to prefer the later albums, and like I said, I love them. But for me, this is the one I return to over and over again. The heaviness, simplicity, fucking punishing grooves..........Thank you Chuck
This is one of their best albums. The guitar is on point, the bass rocks, and of course Chucks awesome vocals. This was a great lineup. Almost every Death album had a different lineup of musicians except Chuck of course.
you are right ! all death's albums are perfect,I have no favorites... if you like thrash/death, I advise you this RIP band : massacra !!! the three first albums are genious too ...
This is defiantly my favourite death metal album for a few reasons; Chuck’s vocals and guitar playing are godly on this album (just like any death album) the lyrics can be understood which makes the dark as hell message of the songs come through a lot more clearly, the riffs are pure distilled brutality (especially the title track) death’s bass player on this album made the whole thing sound heavier than Thor’s hammer, the drums succeed in hammering the song forward in a way few drummers can do and the whole album front to back is a joy to listen to, also the title track has possibly the most brutal scream in all of extreme heavy metal! This album gets 5 horns 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

Memorable, catchy album. Great lyrics too. "Born without eyes, hands and half a brain Being born addicted to cocaine." "A pathetic excuse for a human being." Like, how many Death Metal bands' songs do you know the lyrics to?
1. 0:00 Living Monstrosity 2. 5:08 Altering The Future 3. 10:41 Defensive Personalities 4. 15:29 Within The Mind (I can play most of this on my guitar) 5. 21:04 Spiritual Healing (Favorite to listen to) 6. 28:50 Low Life
Best part is he is rawdogging it....(No effects pedals straight to the amp) The amount of gear people have to buy to sound like him is shows he is TRUE LEGEND LIVE
It is probably my favourite Death album as it was the first one I heard. Discovered the cassette circa 2003 when I was going through my elder brother's music collection. Took it to my college hostel and kept banging it throughout the semester. Gives me goosebumps to this day.
Love these guys but the absolute plus is you don't need a lyric sheet to understand the vocals. Highest quality death metal I like it and appreciate it much more now than 3 years after it's release when I first heard it.
I was introduced to Death with 'Symbolic,' but this is my favorite album by them. This is some of the most crushing metal you will hear, absolutely amazing. It also contains amazing melodic soloing, like 17:22 in Within the Mind. Overall, perfect album in my opinion. 10/10
Everytime I hear or think of Chuck I say 'Thank you'. For all the beautiful work he gave us to enjoy. I just wish I had a chance to say it to him personally. My best friend did one night after a concert. It was his dream to meet the Sinca. He never stopped smiling, and later both joined a badass band in heaven. And Im glad both were a part of my life.
Raymond Penland I'm with you there buddy, broke my heart when he died. That day I heard he had gone I played spiritual healing and then the rest of their albums as load as fuck out the windows!! I remember that day now!! And worth every fucking complaint I got!! Chuck schuldiner will live on in our minds and hearts forever 🤘😣🤘 peace bro 👍😔👍

I always enjoyed the later releases from Death more than these older ones unlike most people in the comments section lol I just love how much more technical the drumming is and how melodic those albums are which is why I never really burned this in my brain like the other albums. But it's time \m/ I've been on a Death kick for the last month or so and am just recently realizing the gold on these older albums which is great for me cause its like I get more Death to jam to that I haven't really jammed to in 15 years unlike the other albums which are tattooed in my brain \m/ FuckinG Legends. Chuck was a true IDOL \m/
only now, damned near 20 yrs after chuck schuldiner died, I turn out listening to this awesome band. I was around rockin when Symbolic came out. I should have been all over this shit. Glad I hear it now, no less.
This is my go to band for getting people into more extreme types of metal like death metal for a lot of reasons: 1. They're the OG's. They started it man. 2. You can understand every word Chuck says, and his vocals aren't as harsh as some other bands. 3. They're very melodic, especially from Human and onward. They don't just riff fast the whole album like some bands. They put care into their riffs as well as their melodies.
@@xerxes2044 black sabbath started metal, but only as a general concept. They didn't create death metal, or thrash or any of the other genres other than maybe doom metal If we're gonna credit Sabbath as "the creators of death metal" we might as well say the first caveman that banged a stick on a log created it

Spiritual Healing album is almost 31 years old and it could have been released today . One of the best ever death metal band in the world !!
Maybe 1st...
1. Living Monstrosity
Every day blows by in a world of corrupt addiction
With life comes pain withdrawals and deformation
Breaking the mould of human appearance
Contorting bodies with chemical interference
The guilty one, innocent she now cries
A life of hell, better off to die
Born without eyes, hands, and half a brain
Being born addicted to cocaine
Living monstrosity
A freak for life they'll always be
Never knowing love or hate
Only pain the drug creates
[Solos: Murphy, Shuldiner]
Some say she's naive, she's a stupid bitch
Some say to forgive, guilty she should die
The beginning of the end begins at birth
Breeding masses of twisted screaming flesh
An example we should make out of theses creators of misfortune
A serious crime that should not be forgiven
The guilty one, innocent she now cries
A life of hell, better off to die
Born without eyes, hands, and half a brain
Being born addicted to cocaine
2. Altering The Future
Creating a life only to destroy
Saved from a life of the unemployed
Where crime is the only way to survive
Which is the best to be dead or alive?
Maybe a chance but maybe not
Born to be thrown in the trash to rot
To exist in this world might be a mistake
The one who is with child, it's their choice to make
Death and life taken so easily
Right or wrong, whose choice will it be?
Abortion, when it is needed
Execution, for those who deserve it
The giving and taking of life will always be
Altering the future
[Solos: Shuldiner, Murphy]
Look into the future to prepare us for our fate
Controlling our existence with every life we take
Life for a life should remain the rule
The innocent victim that is what's cruel
Look to the past is what we should do
When justice was done and justice was true
Using our laws to help their escape
An easy way out is what they create
Claiming insane is the way to freedom
People are stupid enough to believe them
Death and life taken so easily
Right or wrong, whose choice will it be?
Abortion, when it is needed
Execution, for those who deserve it
The giving and taking of life will always be
3. Defensive Personalities
One mind divided into three, for every problem a personality
Each one trying to protect, for the crisis a person they'll select
With sorrow comes reassurance, with confusion there's ignorance
Deny who they are, a fantasy gone too far
Protecting the weak points of the mind
Defensive personalities
Violent one minute calm the next
Defensive Personalities
[Solos: Shuldiner, Murphy]
Passed down from generations, years of pain and complications
Darkness was a punishment, memories time cannot mend
Brutalized from the day of birth, to reality they can't return
Existing in a world of three lives inside of one
Protecting the weak points of the mind
Defensive personalities
Violent one minute calm the next
Defensive Personalities
4. Within The Mind
Transforming your mind from the inside out
Overcoming fear that made you doubt
Observing what is stored in the subconscious
Trusting what you feel with your gut responses
See past the dark and use your energy
Learn from these images
Thoughts that we call dreams
This power lies within the mind
Gain wisdom through abilities
Change what's to come in future time
Avoiding pain and misery
[Solo: Murphy]
Look through the fake from what is real
Making decisions by what you feel
Live for the future and not the past
The weak of mind will never last
Perceiving from visions that reoccur
Analyze your dreams to gain
A better perspective of your life
In control of your destiny with mind and soul
[Solo: Shuldiner]
See past the dark and use your energy
Learn from these images
Thoughts that we call dreams
This power lies within the mind
Gain wisdom through abilities
Change what's to come in future time
Avoiding pain and misery
5. Spiritual Healing
Always blocking the doors to your mind
Escaping reality that surrounds you
Using faith an excuse to kill
A sick way of life is now revealed
All the prayers in the world can't help you now
A killer a taker of life is what you are
Speak no more lies
It's your turn to die
Preach the good word
Speak no more, prepare to burn
A justified torture?
From this may others learn
The life you took a holy death, a grave mistake
No changing your mind, your life you should pay
Practice what you preach
Your loved one is now deceased
Knowledge is at our hands
Never to understand
Spiritual healing
[Solos: Shuldiner, Murphy]
Blinded by twisted ways you live
Kill for religion, will the Lord forgive?
Idiocy has stricken your mind
A real-life hell you will find
All the prayers in the world can't help you now
A killer a taker of life is what you are
Speak no more lies
It's your turn to die
Preach the good word
Speak no more, prepare to burn
A justified torture?
From this may others learn
The life you took a holy death, a grave mistake
No changing your mind, your life you should pay
6. Low Life
Those who are a waste of life
Use up air that others could breathe
Human leaches all around
Superior is what they believe
Fake is the word you represent
Your existence on earth I resent
At the cost of others you get by
Each word that you speak is a lie
Low life - That's all you'll ever be
Lies in effect - That's what you like to see
Hiding behind material values
That help cover up your weakness
Never to change, always to look
For an easy way out of life
[Solos: Murphy, Shuldiner, Murphy, Shuldiner, Murphy, Shuldiner]
A pathetic excuse for a human being
Nothing to back you up, never give a second thought
Thinking you fool the world, into seeing something you are not
Fake is the word you represent
Your existence on earth I resent
At the cost of others you get by
Each word that you speak is a lie
Low life - That's all you'll ever be
Lies in effect - That's what you like to see
7. Genetic Reconstruction
Extending a life with total resistance
To fatal disease, future methods of science
Replacing what is real by using technology
Population control, selecting those who will breed
A specific type of form chosen for the unborn
A mind without emotion
Progressive anatomy
Genetic reconstruction
Evolution in production
[Solos: Murphy, Shuldiner]
Producing a race of human machines
A new age of existence the world will see
Replacing what is real by using technology

A mind without emotion
Progressive anatomy

Evolution in production
8. Killing Spree
To the world around he was the perfect person
Planning for an alibi he then starts rehearsing
A human bomb just waiting to explode
This secret rage can't be controlled
Slaughtered the dreams of others
One left to recover
Self-inflicted wounds
Life he has consumed
Planning a killing spree
Victim of a conspiracy?
Getting bored with his current life
Rearranging with a knife
[Solos: Murphy, Shuldiner]
Greed before despair suspicion starts to grow
His life was spared for this he does not know
Screams filled the air there was no way to help
The ones he mourns he killed himself
Slaughtered the dreams of others
One left to recover
Self-inflicted wounds
Life he has consumed
Planning a killing spree
Victim of a conspiracy?

They successfully replicated the illustration style of Christian rags like Awake! and The Watchtower. The inspiration for the pastor was allegedly Chilean TV host Don Francisco.

Following the musical progression of Chuck was one of my favourite things in life. Still sleep in a Death t-shirt. The irony of his songs will never be lost. Death is life...

Chuck's work is timeless. I really appreciate your words on this topic 🙏👏🏽

I like all Death albums anyway. This sounds mostly like Leprosy but it sorta has more Thrash influence and also some of the topics and ambiences later found in albums like Human or ITP. The drums have some passage that sound quite different from the first 2 albums.

Death metal puro este SPIRITUAL HEALING
The drums sound so much better than on the previous album Leprosy. That was a shortcoming in the 1980s. The studio technology was sometimes poorly used and the more brutal, faster Speed, Thrash and Death Metal was perhaps not taken seriously yet. In my opinion, 1988 was the breakthrough year. Slayers South of Heaven had a completely new sound that is still timeless today.
South of Heaven has heavenly production values IMO (back then it was also sometimes seen as 'too clean' in the scene )
Drum composition also seems more varied.

Love every Death album, and have been a huge fan since hearing them for the first time back in 1987.

This is my go to band for getting people into more extreme types of metal like death metal for a lot of reasons:
1. They're the OG's. They started it man.
2. You can understand every word Chuck says, and his vocals aren't as harsh as some other bands.
3. They're very melodic, especially from Human and onward. They don't just riff fast the whole album like some bands. They put care into their riffs as well as their melodies.
