Flushing and Blood Withdrawal from a Central Line

- This video has been made to demonstrate proper flushing and blood withdrawal from a central line. It is intended to teach the principles of line care, but not intended to be an instructional video.
Central lines are IV's which allow medications to be given into large veins in the body, or to draw blood for lab work. While healthcare providers are trained in caring for this type of device, there can be differences between providers as to how this care is performed. Even though we may not train you to perform flushes or lab draws off of a line independently, it is important to know how to correctly care for your line.
I like the fact that you guys mention that it's your line it's your responsibility to speak up because not everyone is going to be familiar with all steps necessary.
The thing is that one false move with these things is enough to kill on the spot. So, YEAH, it kind of is a big deal ,and can't be emphasized to the patient enough.
How the fuck would they know if something is correct or not, it's like, okay yeah it's your line but a typical patient wouldn't know what the steps are to flush and wouldnt know if something wrong was occuring and would trust their healthcare provider.
@@Knivess08 years ago! Yeah I get your point it’s not always easy to know how to properly take care of a central line. They are very prone to clotting and infections and we did a lot of training with an infusion nurse on all the steps required to care for a line at home.
Many times even in the hospital the lines were cared for by a specialty team that does them all the time and knows all the steps and precautions to take.
For us at home we had to remove the sealed dressing and use masks, sterile techniques and be super mindful of what you touched and what was in or outside the sterile field almost like you were doing a surgery in your living room. It was stressful because at the same time I’m trying to keep a toddler from moving and contaminating the area where the line is tunneled under the skin.
What about checking blood drawback prior to flushing??
How many should be drop to waste?
How they will know which lumen will extract blood?
What if a nurse draws blood and then puts the saline?
great information, thanks!
which lumen the blood is drawn?
Thanks

Not a bad video but there was alot of talking and very little demonstration. It helps not to go back and forth with the speakers and the demonstrator. Good job otherwise.
is flush with heparin solution need during every infusion can u plz provide me exact information
Heparinized afterwards
@@swissygirl36 thanks
@@preetdhaliwal9845 you’re welcome 🤗
@@preetdhaliwal9845 Most places don’t use heparin in their central lines anymore. They’re filled with heparin if they’re not being actively used, otherwise normal saline flushes suffice as is.
Why flush heparin into the line. Pull off the heparin waste first
Why not promote the professionalism of your nurses. Last names, titles, and credentials (beyond RN) should be standard. Consider what this video would look like if physicians were portrayed. We are more than just a smiling face with a first name.
Hand Hygiene pfff, you washed it completely wrong
In Italy they don’t wash the hand and no gloves, in private Hospital and public ospital same.
Even if you tell them they don't and they respond badly
Useless, instead of showing those baffled faces reading through notes, show the actual action
Do you really need to talk a lot? Just do a demo!
