Shawn's MO was definitely to shred the hell out of the covers he played. Sometimes to a hilarious degree! The only exception is probably my favorite clip of him on RUclips where he plays "Once Upon a Time in the West". You're spot on that he refined later in life. I'd recommend checking out something from the "live in Paris" videos. Savitri is an incredible song.
Shawn Lane's style is definitely an acquired taste. Just like any music, for example I don't like Eminem but he's extremely popular lol. Glad to see ya giving shawn lane a chance at your leisure. Maybe you can check out Tri-tone Fascination, which is a studio album by shawn lane. I particularly like Hardcase, but there's more than one decent gem in that album. As usual though there's a fair bit of noodling, particularly in his live videos, so take that as you will.

I think there is a live show where he plays the powers of ten songs in good quality. im sure maybe you change your mind about that album? ❤❤
To be honest I bought that record when it came out, it’s been decades since hear it. I will definitely check it out again.
