Wow I just discovered him yesterday. I don't think anyone can argue that someone else was faster or more astute guitar master. I'm not even into super fast shredding because mostly it ends up sounding like an angry bee. But what he has going on goes way beyond that. God certainly blessed this man although he certainly never gained the recognition he absolutely deserved. That Kalcuta track brought me to tears just now.

Roy Marchbank has transcribed and performed some of the stuff from Powers of Ten. He’s the only person I’ve ever seen or heard who can mimic Shawn’s speed and phrasing.
@@FloridaManMattyI’ve recently stumbled on Roy Marchbank and he is indeed phenomenal. In fact one of the thoughts that ran through my mind is that he plays with the speed and fluidity of Shawn Lane. All good selections, but let's be honest, all Shawn Lane fans have another ten, and another ten after that we could cite. His solo on So What? can melt steel. I Only Want To Know and The Way It Has To Be are glorious, and there are many more. Twenty years gone this year, but still the GOAT.
Shawn's Hey Tee Bone solo is probably one of the single-most impressive solos ever recorded. Everything about it is a feat (his solo on 'So What' is also up there). Slow the timing down and everything is perfectly on beat, the note choices are simply incredible, the melodic styles switch around mid-solo from blues to classical to jazz and to things that are simply undefinable, the articulation for every note is clear as day (which makes it all the more impressive given the speeds at which he's playing)... it's absurd. I've studied this solo closely for many years because of just how incredible it is and it's WAY harder to play than it sounds (and it obviously sounds insane already). Plus, THIS WAS THE FIRST or SECOND TAKE (as told to me by some of the folks who knew him personally). The only cut in the solo is the last couple measures, which adds that diminished line. Clearly, this was just a walk-in-the-park for Shawn, because in order to play that fast, that cleanly, that perfectly on beat, and with such articulation both hands, he was absolutely capable of playing much faster. Shawn was a prodigious savant - an incredible rarity with a mind and nervous system so unique that we're unlikely to find many multi-instrumentalists quite like him. And, considering his multitude of passions (with guitar being only a small part of his life), one can only imagine if he stuck strictly to guitar - his playing would've been truly irrepetible (clearly it is already). We were lucky to have him here for the short time he was around. Best part, is that he was supremely humble. He wanted to be treated just like anyone else, and I'm sure it was difficult being that guy that everyone admires as an otherworldly person. The guitar world is privileged to have had him and his legacy continues to grow, as it always will. Let's all be thankful for his time here and what he graced us with.

Saw Shawn Lane with his kid band Savage at Audubon Park in Memphis. Shawn was 13 or 14. It was a beautiful Sunday Afternoon with thousands hanging out at the park. Fluidity and creativity combined Fleativity. On the stretch riffs off the cuff and the precision and quickness clean, no one for me is better. Watching his riffs slow on DVD is even more crazy they scream, yea go ahead bud you,,,,,, Ain't got it.
That last solo was insane. Tell me someone who could play those lines that fast even today? I can't think of anyone. Even Gambale can pick that fast using alternate picking and even combo alt/legato. He might be able to sweep some stuff but Shawn almost never did sweep picking. Those were all alt picked with a few hammer/pulloffs sometimes. Crazy. Physically, he definitely was in his prime at that point. That's more blistering than anything he did at that MIT clinic. I think you definitely picked the best solo for last. Just blazing and more blazing till the end.
19 per second isn't that fast. He was doing shit here WAY faster lol. I can play clean up to like 24 nps. And I'm a bedroom nobody just trying to learn Jeff loomis and yngwie shit in my basement. I agree that this is that fastest playing ever but 19 notes pet second is an underestimate
@@preston2636 Funny story my dude. I literally measured my ridiculous guitarist friend recently up to like 24 nps and I couldn't believe it. My friend would laugh about his playing against Shawn's so yeah, I suppose Shawn does reach entirely next level numbers.
Such a talent, and a loss in so many ways, yet to see him like a giddy schoolboy in the presence of Alan Holdsworth was priceless, both musicians gifted in ways even todays rock gods pale. Guthrie Govan is another. The all share certain important qualities, humble, generous, inspiring and all were, are approachable.
Love his playing. Used to listen to “powers of ten “ while going to sleep for years. I actually got to see him live in Georgia at a drum store clinic. He was playing with Jeff stipe and jonas hellborg. Those 3 dudes were off the chain. I don’t wasn’t a fan of his tone he was using but his playing was great. Rip Shawn….😢
Shawn Lane's music with Jonas Hellborg and Jeff Sipe is the greatest material he ever laid down.. Anyone who hasn't heard Personae, needs to check it out. Not as 80's pop sounding as his Powers of Ten album. More edgy and incorporated his Pakistan flavor in his riffs and solos. Another level from this level!!
Still the most skilled electric guitarist I've ever seen. I'd assume that maybe Vai, Satriani, or Govan know more on theory just because they've been around so long, but you never know. Apparently Shawn could read and absorb a book in one day. Still though, Shawn's accuracy and speed is unmatched.
@@eniph2953 I appreciate the techicality and especially innovativity of guitarists like Caswell, but the rarest thing among guitarists is musicality. Interesting AND beautiful solos are exceedingly rare. Most shredders just play mind-numbingly boring lines. I get it, as an immature guitarist you do that. They ruin many otherwise great songs but I don't have to like everything. Guitarists like Abasi or Caswell don't do that, but they overanalyze things. There's still no soul in the solos, only intellectual construction. Shawn makes it seem like he can play all the lines he can think about spontaneously, that his fingers work autonomously. And the lines he does come up with are unmatched in their beauty. He doesn't do the "complexity for complexity's sake" thing. What he does is much more difficult: play the perfect notes with the perfect tone and perfect phrasing that are still highly innovative for listeners like me who've "heard it all"
I can remember thinking to myself, how is this dude not known world wide? But since the late 2010's and early 2020's, he's all the sudden a thing on RUclips. Too bad he couldn't have enjoyed this same level of attention while alive. I guess people just wanted guitarist back then in skinny jeans and flashy shirts.
Sometimes you can see and hear Shawn playing faster than the signal can run from the guitar, through the cable and out of the amp. Faster than the actual speed of sound, seemingly...🤘🏻🤘🏻
There are three guitar players who could make the guitar do anything they wanted to. Jason Becker Shawn Lane Guthrie Govan Two of those talents were taken away from us too soon. Jason was completely ahead of his time. Incredibly aggressive style and in your face. Shawn's lightning speed. Guthrie is the most complete because he's been around long enough to master everything.
@@andyj845 Because they aren't them. But you're missing out the fact that Jeff Beck and Derek trucks would have WAY more difficulty emulating those 3, than those 3 would have emulating them. Matteo Mancuso is different, because he is an incredible technical virtuoso, however lets not forget that the new "mind-blowing" things that Matteo are bringing to the table today are the same things Guthrie brought in his older recorded erotic cakes stuff 20 years ago. I love Matteo and I love his originality, but don't act like there's a definitive winner amongst them all. They all have different styles, and should be appreciated for them. Not compared.
The way I look at it is that there are a few guys who were able to stretch the guitar into sounds it was never supposed to make, like van Halen or Kazuhito Yamashita, which I rate highly. But in terms of playing the instrument how it was intended to be played, nobody ever did it better than Lane.
hey Face Melters, do you like some of Shawn's more jam/improv type stuff with Hellborg and Sipe? He goes pretty crazy on the last solo of this gig ruclips.net/video/IXN96Lqdgfs/видео.html
Problem with Shawn is that he was so superior on his runs up and down the fretboard compared to everyone else that none of his runs are particularly more technical and fast than his other ones. They are just a level above the rest of the best shredders on the planet. He isnan example of "you cant do this". Im a 25 year player, and a decent shredder at that. But i know that even if i practice a solo of his for ten years, my fingers dont have that reaction time and pop. No ones do. The muscle memory in his hands was kinda like the usain bolt of fingers. Only way i can describe it.
He just doesn't get mentioned enough. He is the goat without question.

this was analyzed in the July 2006 issue of Guitar world
Strongly believe Rick beato should show Shawn lane soon, this guitar god is marvelous and true legend. For me he’s my idol
After him, the name Shawn became synonymous with GOD
Such a talent, and a loss in so many ways, yet to see him like a giddy schoolboy in the presence of Alan Holdsworth was priceless, both musicians gifted in ways even todays rock gods pale. Guthrie Govan is another. The all share certain important qualities, humble, generous, inspiring and all were, are approachable.
Shawn Lane IS THE GOAT ... All guitar roads lead to Lane 👍
The GOAT guitarist
Love his playing. Used to listen to “powers of ten “ while going to sleep for years. I actually got to see him live in Georgia at a drum store clinic. He was playing with Jeff stipe and jonas hellborg. Those 3 dudes were off the chain. I don’t wasn’t a fan of his tone he was using but his playing was great. Rip Shawn….😢
Very jealous!
The best? "Rag 8/B" from the "Personae" album by Jonas Helleborg.
It's all there.
🙏🙏🙏
Any ad libber, soloist, will be frozen back to the wall with Shawn. His fingers were the closest to totally impossible that we will ever hear.
he only one can do hyper tremor muscle on this planet
Shawn Lane, Jason Becker and now Guthrie Govan..My top 3 of all time..and I have seen a LOT of virtuoso guitarists.....
All Along the Watchtower was sick but Let It Be with Paul Gilbert at NAMM is his most epic in my opinion. Have you heard that one?
Shawn is the GOAT no doubt! Have you featured Andy Timmons? If not you gotta make a video for him. That guy is criminally under appreciated
fucking unbelievable.
It should also be noted that Shawn never ever hit a bad note.
This is gonna seem like a weird choice, but my favourite Shawn lane song is Gem by Eric Johnson...
Damn. I watched it w/o face protection.
None better before him, none better after. RIP SL
he should have join the G3 tour or a something like a "Truth in shredding" collaboration album
LYNCH IT UP!
Charles Caswell with Berried Alive is close if not better with speed and accuracy and technicality imo
You'd assume falsely. Shawn was the greatest guitar genius who ever played. Andy Timmons said if he ever met a genius, it was Shawn Lane.
What he does is much more difficult: play the perfect notes with the perfect tone and perfect phrasing that are still highly innovative for listeners like me who've "heard it all"
@@eniph2953if not better 😂😂😂😂 good joke!
Scary
I can remember thinking to myself, how is this dude not known world wide? But since the late 2010's and early 2020's, he's all the sudden a thing on RUclips. Too bad he couldn't have enjoyed this same level of attention while alive. I guess people just wanted guitarist back then in skinny jeans and flashy shirts.
Subbed
Nice! Thanks 🤘
Sometimes you can see and hear Shawn playing faster than the signal can run from the guitar, through the cable and out of the amp. Faster than the actual speed of sound, seemingly...🤘🏻🤘🏻
RIP Shawn Lane
call me crazy but I think Shawns sound and flow was better this this Charvel than that Vigier he used later.
C Funk was a Mark Varney project not Mike.
Let's not forget this.....check out his soloing over the drum solo at the end...ruclips.net/video/8eDV4fJcRUI/видео.html
Omg , even faster than YJM and he’s rather fast😮
There are three guitar players who could make the guitar do anything they wanted to.
Jason Becker
Shawn Lane
Guthrie Govan
Two of those talents were taken away from us too soon. Jason was completely ahead of his time. Incredibly aggressive style and in your face. Shawn's lightning speed. Guthrie is the most complete because he's been around long enough to master everything.
All 3 would still have a difficult time consistently emulating the playing of Jeff Beck, Derek Trucks, and Matteo Mancuso.
BUCKETHEAD!!!!!!!!!!
5:39 only 2.8% of viewers are subscribed?! Come on everyone?!
Amen brother!
Shawn was comfortable on at least 4 different instruments !!! Left us too soon !!! ...
Yea he was pretty comfy on the guitar and piano. Like jedi master comfy
All along the watchtower is not his best solo...the best solo is the REH Get You Back live solo.
hey Face Melters, do you like some of Shawn's more jam/improv type stuff with Hellborg and Sipe? He goes pretty crazy on the last solo of this gig ruclips.net/video/IXN96Lqdgfs/видео.html
how is he so good??
Hours and hours of practice?
An insane ability to learn and understand?
Or.... he's an alien?
Cold Cutta India-nice computer generated narration!🤣👍
Shawn Lane was super bad!
the first video show where John petrucci gets a lot of licks for his solos
He played the guitar as if he was the one to invent it
Problem with Shawn is that he was so superior on his runs up and down the fretboard compared to everyone else that none of his runs are particularly more technical and fast than his other ones.
Yea, this goes up to 11
