TAMA always kills it tbh. I used to be a DW guy all my life, but TAMA’s innovation and ease to set up when it comes to hardware is unmatched. Their drums are also fabulous. I honestly think it feels more like a flex at this point to own anything DW related, when their hardware is a bitch to setup, their drums are hella expensive (love PDP too but their only *good* line is the Concept series which I am fortunate to have), their default pedal beaters are heavy as shit, and their drive shafts for double pedals become fucked after a few years. I’m in the process of switching out all my hardware to TAMA, and then eventually once I start working full time amid this abysmal job market, I’ll save up for either this series or a Starclassic Maple.

I personally have the Tama star classic walnut birch and honestly speaking I love the sound of it. I feel like this new drumset resembles more towards the hyperdrive set and also for me the warm fuzzy and mellow sound of the walnut birch beats maple which in my taste is blander comparatively even though I like the sound of the new kit. I feel like the kit having lower grade hardware does not matter as both the build quality and sound is at par or better than its competition. And the downgrade when it comes to the bass drum legs and the quick lock mount system does not change the amazing sound that star classics are known to produce as long as the star cast mounting system and die-cast hoops are present I am good with it

Watching this again- it looks like it's blending the popular features of the StarClassic Walnut Birch and SLP Studio Maple drum sets, so it seems fitting that the price point would put it right in between the two. Great way to get StarClassic drums at a lower price with a combination of woods not so commonly seen in drum manufacturing. It has a very "live" sound similar to the Gretsch Renowns and the previous gen Yamaha Live Custom drums, so I could see this working as a wonderful kit for any drummer wanting to have a really good kit that isn't too expensive for regular gigging. If you have a StarClassic Walnut Birch or other high end kit for recording and serious gigs, but you want something with a similar vibe for regular playing around town, this seems like the perfect kit for that purpose. The price point puts it right at that level, so I could see this as a great competitor in that range.

It would be interesting to hear a comparison of all the different Starclassic lines with same configurations of sizes and heads and so on. The snare on this kit sounded nice tuned up higher. I liked the "tick" you were getting.
I don't think I've seen a recent Tama kit that reminded me more of their drums from the early 90's than these do. They should make some larger sized configurations, send them out with pinstripes or emperors, and market them toward the rock / metal crowd.

It reminds me more of the "old" superstar custom set, with birch and basswood combination shells. Eight lugs on bassdrum (?!), great, but feelable midrange sound. Man, it's not Starclassic.
The absolutely best is still the Performer B/B, and walnut/birch is still acceptable as a part of Starclassic line.
But this kit is a simple, mid-range kit adapted to today's needs in the mid-line, with Starclassic logo for 1.399 $, with chinese birch and maple shells. No more. The first, all birch performer was much more Starclassic in its day, than this kit.

Is there a big difference in bass drum sound if the toms were mounted on stands instead of the bass drum mount?

Hey Drum Center, how does this kit compare to a Mapex Saturn kit? I know the Saturn's are walnut/maple vs. Maple/birch, but as far as price point goes with regard to hardware quality, finish quality, bearing edge quality etc... which is a better buy? Are these priced comparably, or are they more/less than the Mapex kits? Thanks for your response!!!

    • @markomarkovic5729
      @markomarkovic5729 3 года назад +2

Saturn is little more expensive but it's amazing, one of the best sounding kits out there, probably the best bang for the buck. I would personally choose Saturn over Performer. Mapex Armory is made of birch/maple combination, just like this new Performer. The difference is that Performer comes with die-cast hoops, while Armory comes with an excellent Exterminator snare.

@@markomarkovic5729 Not Exterminator. Tomahawk goes with the Armory kit but with replacement option. I tried Tomahawk personally and not impressed me. Sounds a little bit weak.

@@shawndrummer6722 Yes, you're right, my mistake, it's a steel Tomahawk snare, Exterminator (birch/walnut if I'm not mistaken) is one of the replacement options. I haven’t had a chance to try Peacemaker, Dillinger and Daisy Cutter, but I like both Tomahawk and Exterminator.

Not going to lie, that Caramel Aurora finish looks really, really nice...inspired by Sonor’s SQ2 Smoked Larch possibly?
Just curious, can Tama do finishes (like Caramel Aurora) for their Star line? I wasn’t sure if we’re locked down to the finishes listed on the specific Star line?
I have my Star Walnuts already coming, but, there might a Star Bop kit in the future.

In my experience with Starclassic B/B & W/B, dumping the Powercraft reso heads in favor of a good USA 10-mil (Ambassador or G1) makes a world of difference, even more so than a batter head swap.

I just wish they offered a few more options for colors. I like no tom mount (I use a rack) and I'm moving away from my older deep toms and like the shorter toms as I bring my toms in closer these days. I think this is a great option for a lot of drummers. Many great features at a reasonable price. Get an awesome set of Camber cymbals and your all set. HA HA (Kidding on the cymbals of course).

An awfully low price for a line of drums associated with big-name drummers like Stewart Copeland and Kenny Aronoff. Do they still play these or have they upgraded to Star?

I think maple is being made redundant with some of the other woods now showing their faces. I’d go with Birch/Bubinga or Birch/Walnut over the maple/birch.

Very cool kit with a lot of cool features. Another company that's killing it with kits in this price range, is Mapex. Though the Saturn V line has increased a bit over the past year... it's still very reasonable for what you get.

22x18 they offer as single drum order in the new SC Performer series. In addition, 22x20 can be ordered both from the SC Walnut/Birch and SC Maple series (again as single drum orders).
I myself actually like shallower kicks, so I have a Starclassic Maple with a 22x14 bass drum.
