I saw Vacation in the theater with my family in 1983. I thought it was hilarious but my Dad was in tears he was laughing so hard. At age nine I didn't realize exactly why it was so funny to him. He had just found a movie that made him feel "represented " to use today's terminology.

@C J it's showing him struggling to leave his bachelor boy past behind. Even though he's a staunch family man that internal struggle with the beast is there. It's real and relatable like 99% of the stuff in the movie.
It's why comedy doesn't work anymore it's all unrelatable pc bullshit.

@@gazzaroony They try way to much to include every stereotypical character to cover all their bases, usually resulting in being borderline offensive to the people they are trying to appease in the first place. If something offends you, change the channel. Sadly, I think the days of sticking to your convictions and releasing relatable shit is over. Reboots or rehash with characters swapped out for a stereotypecast one to placate the butt hurt mainstream.

As a kid in the late 70s and early 80s. This movie captured the cross country road trip perfectly. There was always a disaster right around the corner. Bored out of your mind for hours traveling across Kansas\Nebraska\Iowa. And the cars back then were such crap they rarely made the trip without at least one repair. Air travel was so expensive it required driving for most of us. Kids always wanted to fly, parents couldnt afford it. Always had to travel hundreds of miles out of the way to visit some cousin you would never see again. By the 3rd day parents hate each other from the stress Ect ect. John Huges was a genius when it came to these movies. He really captured Americana of the time period.

My two pennies: Clark's career working with preservatives mirrors his life's theme; as things always go bad around him, he works hard to preserve the good, to salvage the situation. Just like preservatives push our food beyond its natural expiration, Clark gets his family on a Wally World ride even though the park is closed. His vacation will not spoil; he will preserve it. Man, I grew up on Vacation. My family had it on a recorded VHS tape with two other movies that nobody watched. I must have seen it at least a hundred times before the age of ten. And when Christmas Vacation came out, it was the very same thing. Watched it daily as a kid. I've always loved Chevy Chase, for as long as I can remember. I even have 7 different Chevy Chase posters(my entire room is wallpapered with original 80's movie posters, so it's not out of place) , one is even framed.
Minty is the man! I feel like he would be a great friend, too. And all the stuff he has displayed behind him in his videos, it's like he plucked everything directly from my mental wishlist. Haha

But then, much like you, I was puzzled when I purchased the DVD in 2003 and it featured a completely different song when I watched the movie in English. Fun fact though, if you put on the French language track on the DVD, "I'm So Excited" is still intact :D

Yep. The Whipper Snapper is the Great American Revolution, designed by Anton Schwarzkopf with the first modern vertical loop. Some of the POV footage was used in the movie Rollercoaster. The Screaming Meenie was actually Colossus which opened as one of the largest wooden coasters in the world. Colossus has since been remodeled as Twisted Colossus. It used to have two separate tracks but now it has one continuous track. I got to ride Revolution in ‘91 it was a fun ride and at that time still had only the lap restraints. It was very surreal riding a ride I had seen many times in Rollercoaster and Vacation before ever getting to actually visit. I rode again in 2001, but they had installed over the shoulder restraints. Very unnecessary.

The closest situation to a "Vacation" moment happened in the early 1980s. My aunt and uncle and other relatives went to Disney Land. We were living in Law Vegas at the time so it was a 4 hour drive. No problems on the way there or at the theme park. However, on the way back we had car trouble. We managed to stop in this town, more of a test stop it was so small if you blinked you'd miss it. Anyway at the gas station (garage) some guys offered to fix the van but wanted an outrageous amount of money. So my uncle called his brother and he drove down to two is back. A short time after we were back on the road the cops pulled us over.
The guys at the gas station has called them and said we were smuggling drugs. Fortunately the whole thing was quickly resolved.

Incidentally, along with Candy, who worked with Ramis on SCTV, Eugene Levy, another SCTV alumni, was in the film as the car salesman in the beginning. Davenport!

This movie came out right before my family took my favorite vacation of all time to Eureka Springs, AR. It was my parents, my brother, my grandmother, and me. We called it an adventure, because nothing quite worked out as planned, yet we had the time of our lives! And my grandmother was way more fun than the old aunt in the movie. My dad even asked the girl at the McDonald’s drive thru how to get to Wally World. To this day, I keep the marionette my dad slipped me the money to buy (despite my mother saying no and that it costs too much) in my room. This movie makes me happy, because I remember that trip we took in a crowded car. I remember the old dinosaur park we found, and how we begged our parents to take us, which they eventually turned the car around and did. This movie brings back a lot of good memories.

No doubt NL's "Family Truckster" contributed in some small way to consigning the iconic "Brady Mobile" into history's junkyard; however, the demise in the States of the immensely popular station wagon was primarily the result of changes in Federal fuel efficiency requirements by vehicle class. the changes made the design untenable and ultimately gave rise to the SUV class of vehicle.

My copy of vacation on dvd had I'm so excited on it when she drives up to the family truckster. The time where she sees them at the truck stop is where I hear the little boy sweet song. Wierd. Love this movie. When Clark says there the great missip and starts singing old man river reminds me of my dad when we were driving to Colorado on a family vacation and we stopped in st. Louis and my dad on the camcorder goes here it is folk the great missip🤣. I was dying!! I love the European one just as much.

I grew up watching this movie. We had a copy, my friends had copies, and it was on the "TV movie of the week" many, many, times. I have never heard it with anything other than "I'm so excited".

Remember, the opening credits of Married With Children show the Family Truckster leaving Chicago. Taken from this film. For some reason.

After watching this video, I came here to check the comments to add this information. Guess you beat me to it! 😉
I had no idea that part of the intro from married with children came from this movie back when it was on the air. Internet has changed everything.....

@@jiggygino2855 I didn't realise 30-odd years ago, either. I should've, as I'd seen this film by the time Married With Children hit the airwaves. But the penny just didn't drop.
I probably found out via another RUclips video. Maybe the fella who travels to movie locations. I can't remember his channel's name.

      I think you're talking about this guy's channel. It's where I learned it too.😜

The reason was because the scene was shot in chicago. It shows the chicago skyline and married with children is also set in chicago.

I actually prefer the " Little Boy Sweet" song, maybe because I grew up with it!

It’s way better. And it’s unique to the movie. The other song has been overused all over the place. It was a smart move to ditch it.

Modern Problems was freaking hilarious! The part where he said "Oh Boy" in his Donald Duck voice, and started to snort the voodoo powder like cocaine was classic. Now I have to go and watch it again lol.

Best movie ever, and I also like the newer one with Ed Helms. And I also just watched, again, Caddy Shack. Great stuff!
