Hi Steve, Could you please give a regular update on this particular bed. The sprouting, the thinning and harvesting? It would be great to see how this particular bed progresses. Thanks.
Yes, fellow seed addict, it’s time to organize your seeds! Ordering a variety when you already have it, or finding already purchased multiple packets of one variety is definitely an indication that it’s time to organize. It is so nice to just go into your seed container(s) and you can easily put your hands on what you’re looking for and know exactly what you need to re-order. Although, maybe we could take Cicero’s words and adapt them to gardening. He said that a room without books is like a body without a soul. Maybe a room without seeds is like a body without a soul? Better put some seeds in the bathroom or you’ll have demons coming through the floor. 😂
@@ballysillanallotment-man5793 nice! I planted some turnips last week, never grown or eaten before. I'm going to do another sowing of brassicas this weekend if I can find space!👍
Thanks for the post. İnteresting that you were comparing the taste of some turnips with the taste of radish. Here in Turkey (where I now live) the Turkish people use the same word for turnip and radish....they are all "TURP". I have to rely on the picture on the front of the packet to know whether I'm going to end up with radishes or turnips!
The Turkish are very switched on when it comes to food and cooking as you will know already, it is interesting that they classify Radish and Turnip as the same, when I was a Chef we prepared baby turnips, the size of radish as a vegetable side dish...Steve...🙂
Hi, I have one pencilled in for the end of next week all being well. I have a few days coming up where I am away from the plot over this next week so it is difficult to schedule right now...Steve...🙂
Essentially it is very easy Jim, you draw a drill along a straight edge with your home grown dibber, pop some seed in, cover with soil, water and label. Move onto the next one...Steve...🙂
@@GreenSideUp Oh that sounds lovely. I planted Fennel seeds a few weeks ago but no joy. I will try again tomorrow. It's ok to put them straight in the ground I guess as you did. Last attempt was in seed tray. Hopefully it works 🤞🙃. Marion
Many old seeds will still germinate and grow, just their viability lessens with age and sometimes you just have to cut your losses with old stock...Steve...🙂
I use fennel leaves in my bread and cakes, never had it as a veg. Is it too late to get some sprouts going? Also, would you use rhubarb leaves to make liquid feed?
Can i ask you please Could you plant all of these in the seed plugs indoors and plant them out when they have grown on , im only asking because i like to know what ive planted as i cant tell which are weeds . Is it that if you grew all of these indoors they wont tranfer to the outside as well best wishes New subscriber
Hi Steve I see you are using labels do you make your own if so what do you use . I make some but the water takes the name of them so I do t no what they are .also how do you stop the wind killing your sweet corn . John. From scotland again
Hi John, I buy and use plastic plant labels, then I use a cream cleaning product to clean and reuse the labels as many times as I can. It is not a perfect scenarioo but until something better comes along I will continue to do that. I have tried various alternatives and have not found anything suitable yet. For sweetcorn, see this video ruclips.net/video/rE5QwpxBul8/видео.html...Steve...🙂
Hi Steve..what size gaps was you leaving in between sowings. Also the swede you sowed when will they be ready for?. Thinking ahead for Christmas time eating..wandered when last sowing times would be. Great video..thanks
Hi Gail, you want to be getting on with it to sow swedes really, keep them moist and weed free and they will start cropping between October and December, in cooler winters they "stand" well for me through January into early February...Steve...🙂
Hi Steve. Would love to have the room you have to sow at this time of year. However, I am also sowing some swede and I heard you say that they have been hollow. Do you mean the actual vegetable literally has a hole in the middle? What causes that and how can it be avoided would you know? Thanks for sharing your time with us, great video once again. Phil
HI Phil, it is a Boron deficiency in the soil that causes brownheart (or blackheart, cannot remember which) It used to be corected when I was much younger with Borax, but it is no longer available in the uk, easier option for me is to try another variety. It should be noted that it never spread badly through a crop, but I would find I would cut and clean one at the allotment and take it home for use that day, then cut open to find it useless, so it was unreliable to harvest, transport and use...Steve...🙂
@@GreenSideUp wow, how bizarre that the plant can live and develop that way? Well I will just have to see how I get on with my crop as I have sown Swede Marian, first time I've tried any. Your knowledge is absolutely invaluable Steve, thankyou so much 👍❤
I have never tried growing swedes in the polytunnel, must try that asap. You could try sowing swede now in between rows of something that will be finished soonish, for example in between rows of lettuce...Steve...🙂
I dont know Phillip, normally radish are bulletproof and I have not had this before, I will try to find the french breakfast seed I have and resow another row to see how it is again...Steve...🙂
The way Steve sows these beds is like watching a Master chef preping a meal.
And if course Steve was a chef, so such an apt comment indeed!
Thank you!...Steve...🙂

The peace and quiet, the birdsong and some seed sowing. There’s nothing quite like it. 🥰
Sometimes I do forget I am very rural and also fortunate in that respect, thanks for the reminder...Steve...🙂
It's like Birdwatch with seeds😊.
Hi Steve. You made he chuckle about seeds erywhere except the bathroom laugh. I'm a bit like that too. All the best 🌱🌱🌱🌱
Yes and all my coats too, or any jacket I might use for being out in the garden on the plot will have pockets stuffed with seeds...Steve...🙂
😂😂 you and Tony the brother from another mother are quite humorous and fun to watch the banter. Have a great week 🐝 safe stay cool 😎

Have you looked into making vertical planters with some great ideas on Pinterest as you can save a fair amount of space.

Could the lack of flavour be due to the Verity rather than the sowing? French Breakfast are generally full of flavour and a bit peppery!
