- Start a new Allotment Plot | Part 5 | Allotment Garden | Crop Protection | Green Side Up
This one is all about protecting your early season seedlings and plants both from the weather and from pests.
Giving yourself the best start by protecting seedlings and plants can give you the best start to your season possible, I take you through what I use now and what I used to use right at the very start. I use a combination of what I call my "Hot Boxes" inside and outside as needed and I might throw some fleece over them too, this way I can gradually harden off plants and get them used to being outside, before planting them.
I also show you a couple of cheap ideas for started cold frames and advise what to sow first in them.

Am really enjoying your videos. I don't have an allotment, but have found loads of good tips. I'm 72 and have never done any gardening. I've built a 3m raised bed in my very small garden and am really looking forward to growing something.
New sub👍 on waiting list for allotment for last 3 years and down to 22 out of 150 so all this information being banked for future use.
Really like the idea of a hotbox in the greenhouse, going to build one next week
Great content and great video. I have just got 26 pallet coolers free of charge as well. since havin the car allotment life is so much easier 🚵♂️🚳🎒🎒
Thought this video and your others were very informative and not judgmental of the amateur allotment plot holder. Also giving many different options to suit all budgets and styles was really helpful. Thank you 😊
I've wanted to comment for so long (shy) but this is the best video I've ever seen to a beginner, I'm going to share on my Facebook group hope that's ok, and thanks for your videos 🥰
Fantastic tips and advice and a great channel. Having only just acquired my first allotment, I'm finding your videos extremely helpful. Keep up the great work. Many thanks.
Smasking video. Im not new to veg growing, but there are some cracking idea. Excellent video.
Great advice on how to garden on a budget. Thank you.
I always look forward to watching your videos! very informative and interesting. Thank you for taking the time for making these videos.
Hi Steve, I didn't realise slugs would be in the compost as I was so careful with my trays and seeds. I noticed last week, the wee seedlings weren't coming on. Watched one of ur videos, you mentioned slugs, and sure enough, didn't I have a few slugs having a field day on my young plants. Thanks for the heads up cause I would have missed that 🙄
Terrific video Steve, some really useful information, lots of ideas cheers mate stay safe David 👍👍
Loved that, Brilliant content Thanks Steve 👍💐🥬🥦🌶🥔
I have been growing a garden for many years, and still learn from you all the time, THANK YOU
Brilliant tips Steve. Love your videos 🙂👍🌷🥦
Very nice set up. Thanks for sharing!

Top tips there Steve! Thanks for all the info.
Thanks Steve very helpfull
fantastic advice. given me loads of ideas!
I remember Geoff Hamilton making a temporary cold frame from a strong cardboard box with clear plastic over the top.
i always turn my pallet collars the other way round, steve. no metal is left sticking up...................brian
👍👍👍
I thought the cold frame ideas were brilliant. Many thanks for them Steve.
Hi Steve! I have just got myself a new allotment plot in Brampton near Carlisle and your "Start a new allotment plot" series has really helped me gather tips and knowledge on where to begin. I only got it Sunday gone and I've been down there clearing the land (lots of docks and weeds) and I should be ready to get going with turning the soil this weekend. Any tips on this? I've thought about no dig, but I'm wanting to turn the entire plot over before laying out a solid plan of where everything is going to go. Keep up the good work 👍
Thanks Steve. You’ve got the experience, and the knack of simplifying things so us beginners feel confident enough to get on and just do it.👌
Steve, thank you very much for the tips for beginners. As you know I've just started my allotment plot and going through exactly the things you mentioned. Keep em coming, I can do with all the help I can get. Thank you again.
Very good to hear Trev, keep nibbling away at it...it will all eventually come good...Steve...😃
Excellent video Steve giving new allotment holders tips how to get the allotment started.
Over the years I have seen quite a few new gardeners on our site who don't really know how to start, they eventually give the plot up. That is what inspired this series of videos...Steve...👍
@@GreenSideUp My plot was messy and looked unmanageable when I first got and it's not quite a paradise yet but it's in a better state than when I got my hands on it. If I had gave up it would still been in the mess I got it. Giving up isn't part of my personality.
@@davidthescottishvegan That is a very good trait to have David, especially for a plot holder on an allotment site...Steve...😁
Steve : thank you for sharing these great ideas. I will sow my brassicas outdoors in a makeshift cold frame. You've inspired me :-) Best wishes. Jan
Perfect timing for this video Steve. Acquired my plot today. It's a 5m x 10m plot of grass, so got a blank canvas to work with (and quite a bit of digging 😲 ) This video has given me some ideas to get me started. Thank you 👍
More great advise, for new gardeners Steve, keep up the good work Marra
Great video Steve. I have some plastic sheeting so will start getting the soil warmed. Also with the idea of the bricks and polythene, you have saved me a few quid. I want to make a cold frame from timber, but not been able to repurpose any and was contemplating buy some, but that part of the video reminded me that I have around 200 bricks behind the shed so will be making a brick cold frame. Keep up the great content Steve.
I love the hanging shelves I keep seeing, I'll have to do it when I get my pollytunnel.
It's another simple idea I had after hanging gutters up to sow peas in for many years to keep the mice off...Steve...😁
Some great info there Steve.. the simple tote turned upside down, I like easy.. I've just built myself a cold frame, now to find a cover for it...
Thanks steve...such good practical info...brilliant!!!
Thanks Pam, hope you can get your chillis sorted out...Steve...😊
Cheers Steve , great ideas for the cold frames, this weekend job clean the greenhouse its only a small 6ft x 4ft but it will do for the garden & veggie boarders
Hi Steve
That was an excellent video 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
I've also used the clear plastic box and lid as a mini green house for potted up plants that still need a little extra protection until they have put on a little bit more growth (also as emergency protection when you run out of greenhouse space)
Great tips Steve. I could start with the bricks and plastic while I'm having a go at making a hot box. I've got some suitable wood that I got from a skip. I'm going to go back and take a look at your other videos. 🌱Judi
Great knowledge Steve cheers stay safe
Andy West Yorkshire
Cheers Andy, thanks for watching...Steve...😁
That’s great Steve ! I’m going to get some plastic to make my own mini hoop houses 😁
You will wonder how you managed without them!...Steve...😊
Thanks for the info Steve. Great stuff👍👍
Your welcome Mark, thanks for watching...Steve...😃
I really enjoyed this and found it useful.
Would you consider doing a video for us newbies on climbing structures and that type of thing?
Hi Steve, I love your wing nut framing panels I did say last year I was going to build some but unfortunately I’ve not got round to it yet, but I will.
Really worthwhile making Frankie, you wont look back once you have one or more. I hope to add to my "fleet" this year also...Steve...😁
@@GreenSideUp thanks Steve 👍
Brilliant alternatives, you could look in a gaderning catolugue and end up spending a fortune otherwise.
Yes, very easy to spend money, not so easy to save it...Steve...😁
My carrots always get carrot fly :( so unfair!
Maybe you need to consider growing them under a colche tunnel or have you tried growing garlic and onions near them because carrot fly don't like any of the plants that are part of the allium family (that is any plants that are related to onions) for example chives, leeks, spring onions etc. and onion fly doesn't like carrots.
I did not show it in the video, but I have more of those hotboxes, shorter in height but covered in environmesh to grow carrots in. Or as David says try the companion planting also. MY carrots in the tunnel are sown late to avoid the last cycle of carrot fly...Steve...😊
