I'm wondering if you could just strim it then cover the whole lot with a few layers of cardboard. I feel that will smother any grass / weeds and then as it rots down you could plant straight through the cardboard in Spring.....
Yeah, that's a good idea. I did do that on a small scale on half of that bed where I planted my pawpaws and fig tree. I meant to do the rest but didn't get around to getting more woodchips to add on top of the cardboard.
That will keep you busy Peter ! I'd never have time to get to an allotment so I've never applied for one. The pumpkin that's taken over is crazy 😱. It's nice to have a decent workable space, very exciting 👍
Not sure how I missed this I'm sure I commented before 🤔 . Well done Peter on getting an allotment, at least it's not too overgrown, and weed suppressant fabric has been laid down and you have raised beds. If you would like some tropical squash seeds, Hyacinth bean seeds ive got some I can send you.
Hey Louise! Yeah, I thought I remember seeing a comment from you here before, RUclips is a bit odd sometimes. Yeah, I'd love to give growing them a go, although you'll have to give me some tips as I am totally new to growing veg 😂
That's amazing and so exciting! Congratulations!! How wonderful to have so much space. I imagine you'll be planted a few Pineapple Guavas🙂 Looking forward to seeing how it goes.
Thanks, Dani! Yeah, I'm super excited and very lucky to be able to get it so soon. Yeah, pineapple guavas are definitely going to get planted here in the future. I want to see if I can root some cuttings or air layer some of my plants to grow here 🙌
Good for you Peter getting an allotment. At this time of year I would cover the areas that are overgrown, use cardboard and manure on top. This will save your back digging out weeds and grass, and by next spring the cardboard will have decomposed and the manure broken down nicely. Sounds like a good plan to have fruit trees, maybe fruit bushes too. Look forward to seeing more videos on your allotment.
@@PeterEntwistle I hope so too but realistically it might be some time yet ... LOL I'm actually pleased just to be on the list. You said that on your plot they don't allow greenhouses ... maybe you can ask if you would be allowed to place small temporary pop-up plastic shelter to protect in winter months or even just when it snows.
@@MoebiusUK Yeah, that's a possibility. I could ask them about that. I did see that someone had one of those small portable greenhouses (not a walk-in one like mine), so they might allow me to put up a temporary structure to protect plants. I get the feeling that even the secretary of the allotment wasn't happy with the council's decision to not allow them on individual plots, but they managed to get them to construct those large greenhouses as a compromise.
@@PeterEntwistle Those temporary ones can be quite good, if they do allow, look for ones with guide ropes (like tents have) to prevent blowing away. Many fruit trees won't require any protection though ... Your Loquats will be fine, as will your pawpaw. You must be very excited at the possibilities now. Look forward to following your progress, mate.
@@MoebiusUK Yeah, that is one of the downsides with the plot I chose, it is quite far away from the fence and trees to provide shelter from the wind. The one I saw with the mini greenhouse had it near the fence. But on the plus side, it does seem like it gets full sun all day (when we do get any sun that is lol 😂). Yeah, you are right I will likely be planting loquats, pawpaws and figs that won't need protection (unless the loquat flowers). I guess if I try anything like strawberry/lemon guavas or Chilean guavas I will have to keep a close eye on the temperatures and be ready to get around there to protect them on cold nights.

Thats my plan this winter, as the grass has been such a pain to keep removing!

Thanks, Brett. Yeah, it's very exciting, but you're right it is going to be a lot of work, I hope I haven't bitten off more than I can chew lol 😂
This is exciting. Great potential. Looking forward to watching
Thanks, Mark. Yeah, I’m excited to see what I can grow on it next year!
Congratulations Peter and hope you will have great fun and enjoyment in working your plot.
Thanks, Mike. It should be really fun to transform it!
Congratulations Peter 🎉 I’m sure you’ll do a great job growing vegetables etc…🙌🏾
Thanks, Joe! I think I'll have work cut out, but should hopefully pay back over time 🤞
Well done mate. That looks brilliant. I bet you are so excited!

Thats so awesome! Congrats
Cheers Paul, I can't wait to be able to get planting 👍
Nice one man! Mine's a half plot too. Will be awesome to see how you get on 🌿
Thanks, Conor! I can't wait to get going with it, does feel quite daunting though 😂
Well done, Peter. Glad you got a spot. It looks amazing.
Thanks, Moebius! I hope you get yours soon 🤞

I can tell you what kind of Srilankan vegetables you can grow on that lovely space 😁
Looking forward to seeing what you’re going to grow there.
Thanks, Nirmala, yeah please feel free to give me some ideas of what vegetables I could try growing 😊
All the best peter
Thanks, Irene! I'm really excited to get going with it 👍
Exciting! :-))
Thank you! Yeah, I'm incredibly excited to get started with it!
