One of May's most humiliating moments as a child was when her mother mistook her swimming in a blue cap for a Tentacool. Worse, though, her mom then tried to catch her with a Pokéball. If there is any definitive moment that might explain why she doesn't like Pokémon, it would be this. Especially if her parents, on a regular basis, confuse her or ignore her for Pokémon. Otherwise, though, her parents confusing her for an actual creature doesn't help their case. They really should be able to tell their daughter from a random Pokémon. That's basic parenting.
I like XY better than AG overall, but let me be the minority that sides with Max over Bonnie. While both are nominally Little Kid characters, the thought process that went into making them is quite different. Max is a character-driven character, while Bonnie is a plot-driven character. Max was designed as this 7-year-old who liked Pokemon and thus studied them, thus giving him a pool of theoretical knowledge that can exceed many 10-year-olds who are actually getting their Pokemon. Everything about him flows naturally from this premise. He looks down on Ash at first in the same manner of a Monday morning quarterback. He butts heads with his somewhat unreliable 10 year old sister who, despite being a Gym Leader's daughter, is lacking in even basic knowledge of Pokemon. His theoretical knowledge also leads to him having what for a little kid is an unusual battling style, with an emphasis on power up moves before attacking. Yes, he overemphasizes the usage, but it is still an interesting choice because most kids would reach for the direct attack options first - that a 7 year old even remembers the existence of support moves is pretty nice. He looks over any Pokemon May isn't taking care of, which is actually important because otherwise they would spill over directly onto Ash and Brock's laps, making May's irresponsibility very apparent. And he takes over the electronic navigation. So he's actually, if not irreplaceable, making himself useful, which is all you can realistically expect a 7 year old to do in a group with two 10-year-olds and a 15-year old. And that point, "realism", is the point - the show does give him work to do, but it keeps it within what can be expected of a 7 year old. Bonnie, on the other hand, is made trying to learn from Max. First, while it took until XY&Z for the answer to come out, they gave her a very specific role - that of Zygarde's Holder. Everything before then is trying to build her up to that point. Further, before that they decided to make her useful to the group. So they made her more physically able than her brother Clemont despite him being several years older. That way, she can have a "clear role" as the physical person of their duo. They also made her mature for her age. When Max dives into a pool of kids about his age, he doesn't stand out - an individual, but not a head above. When Bonnie dives into a pool of kids about her age, she stands out as the Mature One. Further, her interactions with Clemont are more stylized than Max's are with May. Bonnie will go invite a woman until Clemont puts a stop to it. Or Clemont will put out a new machine, Bonnie will complain about the naming, and then when it blows up she'd say "Oh you failed again, Brother". They do have other interactions, but these are the most common and thus much of what anyone remembers about them centers on these two. You might also note that Bonnie is the troublemaker, while when Max pulls Brock way, he is the trouble-stopper. Why Max gets hit so hard for Brock's vices I do not understand. Meanwhile, in terms of brattiness, I actually think Bonnie is more of a brat than Max. You might remember how Bonnie keeps insisting that everyone risk themselves to save Squishy against a team of adults that want Squishy very very much. Because of "meta", the audience understands what's going on - Squishy is Zygarde and Team Flare are the bad guys - he's worth saving. But if you take an in-universe perspective, Squishy was basically this mysterious useless-looking blob that they hadn't even met for that long. Objectively, he's not worth risking the rest of the group on. These mysterious adults might even have legal rights to Squishy for all Bonnie knows. But Bonnie keeps wailing and insisting. That it is in-story the right move should not conceal from us how bratty and irresponsible Bonnie's behavior really was. I don’t think I see anything quite that bratty from Max. So I hope people kind of understand why while I like Bonnie too, Max is a head above Bonnie. Clemort is a better brother than May because both Clemort and Bonnie love Pokemon while May hates Pokemon. I wish Max and Dawn are sibling not only their mom has blue hair but they are smart, love and know the history of pokemon, and Dawn might be giving Max a Pokemon suit for him. Did you know that Max became a Mewtwo while Jirachi became Amber?
You're forgetting someone... *PIKACHU.* Pikachu is ash's best companion. He's always there for him. And vice versa. You never said this list couldn't have a pokemon companion
I honestly don't understand why some people don't like Ash while he alone made these characters to who they are now: Misty would still be stuck at Cerulean gym Brock wouldn't realise he wants to be a doctor May would still dislike pokemom or wouldn't be a coordinator Dawn probably wouldn't have made it that far as she did in the grand festival Serena is on a whole another level and Lillie's life was drastically changed because of him. And that's just some for me but there are a lot more characters that like that.
Dawn is easily Ash's best companion. She had to fight her way up through sheer passion and hard work whereas other companions like May were given easy and often undeserved victories simply by virtue of being a main character. Dawn beating May in the Wallace Cup is one of the most cathartic moments in the entire Pokemon anime because we saw how hard she had to work to get there. She lost in the appeal round of 2 contests in a row while May NEVER lost in the appeal round, even with performances that were objectively weaker than Dawn's such as when Skitty botched Blizzard and had to resort to juggling instead. Also, Iris is underrated, mostly because she was part of the disastrous Black and White series. However, I think she was by far the best part of it, to the point where I'd say that, apart from when Cynthia and Dawn showed up, she was that series' only redeeming feature. Yeah, she could be annoying and childish but I think that was the point, which is emphasised by how pissed off Excadrill was with her for a good chunk of her early development. Here's how I would have written Iris' battle with Cynthia. First of all, it should have been a 6 on 6. Second, Iris has Lapras, both to represent the one she has in the games and the manga and show that she's completely overcome her fear of Ice types. Iris starts with Emolga and Cynthia uses Togekiss. Togekiss loses and is replaced by Gastrodon who defeats Emolga. Iris sends out Lapras, who defeats Gastrodon before battling Kommo-o. Lapras uses Rain Dance, Rest and Hydration to heal back to full strength and defeats Kommo-o. Cynthia's Glaceon then defeats Lapras with Mirror Coat before losing to Excadrill, who sets up Sandstorm, which proves to be a massive mistake when Cynthia sends out Garchomp. After defeating Excadrill with a single attack, Garchomp faces off against Iris' own Garchomp, whom Iris immediately Mega Evolves. However, Cynthia's Garchomp uses her superior Speed and Sand Veil Ability to evade and chip away at Iris' Garchomp before finally getting hit with a Sand Force boosted Earthquake (seriously, they should have brought Earthquake back to the anime by now). Cynthia's Garchomp then Mega Evolves as Sandstorm wears off, meaning that she can't benefit from Sand Force but endures Iris' Garchomp's Draco Meteor and knocks him out with Dragon Rush. Iris sends out Dragonite but Mega Garchomp defeats him easily, further emphasising how vast the power difference is between her and Iris' Pokemon. Finally, Iris sends out Haxorus, who goes berserk with Outrage and wears Mega Garchomp down before becoming confused. Just like in the anime, he snaps out of it by slamming his head into the ground which Cynthia mistakenly thinks is an opening. She orders Mega Garchomp to use Dragon Rush but Haxorus counters with Giga Impact and, unlike Iris' Garchomp and Dragonite, manages to match Cynthia's Garchomp (albeit only because she's already tired) and knock her out. However, Iris' victory is short lived as Milotic easily defeats Haxorus without even taking any damage, blocking his Outrage with the Fairy type Disarming Voice and knocking him out with Twister. This would emphasise that although Iris got an early lead and became the first onscreen character to defeat Cynthia's ace, she's still not in the same league.
Here's mine including Go: 17. Sophocles- I just hate his character 16. Cilan- wasn't a big fan of him and he's basically a B tech version of Brock 15. Iris- originally Lana was here but then she started to grow on me. It just seems Iris was put in the anime to bully Ash. I like her look though 14. Tracey- I have nothing against him but I don't remember anything special he did 13. Max- like Tracey, he's nothing special 12. Lana- even though she's quiet, she still has quite a good character 11. Mallow- love her backstory and her character is actually well put together 10. Kiawe- even though I know he isn't the best, he is definitely my favourite of the group from the sun and moon anime 9. Go- I love the chemistry he had with Ash so far and I love his character, but I still think he has to develop a bit more to make it higher on the list 8. Misty- she has a good character, but there is no real development with her 7. Lillie- imo the best character development out of any of ash's companions 6. Bonnie- managed to exceed my expectations in so many ways 5. Clement- how can you not love this guy 4. May- good character development, and she seems like a little sister to Ash 3. Serena- a little over rated imo, but I love her character development, I love the goals she wants to reach, and her relationship with ash definitely makes her character even better 2. Dawn- best pokegirl, and has the best chemistry with ash out of any of his companions. She also reached her goal, has such a strong team and looks great for an anime character 1. Brock- Ash's best friend overall. He's reliable, he's funny, he's a great cook, he's smart, and the gag he has with girls is just hilarious

Although my list has changed slightly since I posted this comment, with Journe's conclusion I can now put Chloe and Goh on the list, Chloe's in dead last, but Goh managed to knock Brock right off third place as my new third favorite. I actually write some crossover fanfics involving Pokemon and I usually do this where instead of having Ash's whole group or just Misty and Brock, I pick the top three Dawn, Serena, and Goh. There are a few varients of course, when I started making those crossovers Sun and Moon was still going on so Goh hadn't been introduced yet, but for all the crossovers written a decent bit after Journey's Goh has been present in almost all stories, same with Dawn and Serena.

Even though May hated Pokémon, May was quick to try to use Mudkip's help in a dire situation. Unfortunately, though, something between Mudkips and May just don't mesh. In other situations, they've spit water at her and avoided her presence. Until Squirtle, she has a pretty bad time with water starter Pokémon. However, she is the daughter of a gym leader and a kind person. Even if she didn't like Pokémon, she wasn't cruel. The fact Mudkips don't like her so much is part-way hilarious, part-way ludicrous. Guess Torchic and her were always meant to be.
When it comes to Pokémon coordinator contests, the aesthetic is just as important as the strength. Some of May's strongest events used abilities that dazzled instead of worked functionally. Along with the moves, though, come the outfits. Each coordinator has a unique look and style to their displays. In her original Pokémon run, May sticks to her functional, yet cute, jacket/skirt combo most of the time. By the time Dawn is the main heroine and she shows up as a rival coordinator, though, her outfit is much different. Most of the time, outfits reflect personality or heritage. With her vaguely Arabian style, May does neither. It's a boggling choice.
The amount of love that I have for Mallow is unhealthy and that's probably because I look, and act kind of like her and my mom died when I was little, sooo I was shook when that episode came out.
Shiny Zoroark if lillie does return to the anime she might be a good thing for Koharu. I think that because they have the same problem for the most part. Lillie might be able to help change her thought on Pokémon and Ash.

I can get the criticisms of Cilan lacking development, but I hate it so much when people call him a copy of Brock. The only thing that Cilan and Brock have in common is that they cook and they commentate everything that's happening in battle. By that logic, Clemont would also be a copy of Brock, which is straight-up wrong. Cilan and Brock have insanely different personalities and their running gags are both vastly different. It really de-values Cilan as a character to call him a copy of Brock.
Serena the main reason is because she the first girl in the Pokemon série who was written to be in love with Ash PLUS the kiss at the if XYZ was just the cherry on to of the cake. She definitely has to come back even though it's going to be a bit awkward because of the way they each other but even though SHE HAS TO COME BACK!
Also let's not forget when May and Muchlax met, the hungry Pokémon was hunting for her heavy Pokéblocks. Though none of her other Pokemon were interested in them because of how extremely inedible it was, Munchlax adored them. For that simple reason alone, May was happy to accept Muchlax and call him her own. Even though Munchlax eventually became one of May's most beloved partners, her reasoning for keeping him was fairly weak. It's basically a sad shrug of adventure companions. Pokémon deserve better love than just "why not" situation. Between her terrible yuck Pokéblocks and Munchlax deserving better, it's a pretty disappointing catch. May is not the best character.
Of course may is not high on the list. If she had romantic feelings for ash then everyone will like her, just like Misty and Serena. But at least may isnt loved because of shipping.
W for almost being an Aureliashipper 4 years ago. Honestly, when I look at what’s on the table, I find Lillie to be way more compatible with Ash than Serena or anyone else; the impact they’ve had on each other, family connections (let’s be honest, did Serena even meet Ash’s mom?), the affection’s more mutual in my opinion, and Ash just generally has a really strong connection to Alola so him having a girlfriend from there only makes sense. They just have more of a connection in my opinion

I think you're forgetting someone or should I say someone's" Team Rocket". And while you may argue that they are badguys, they have been travelling along with Ash just to steal his Pikachu. And along the way they have battle a lot against Ash and lost. Making his Pikachu and his team stronger.

My favorite traveling companions are Serena, Dawn, Misty, May, Brock, Kiawe, Mallow, Bonnie and Lillie. Also I like Ash because of his love towards Pokemon and his determination to help out his friends, his Pokemon and to never back down for a Pokemon battle.

I am super late now 😂, but hey ayaanic bond, I rewatched the series, and got to really know that Serena didn't really start *her journey* , she first went to MEET Ash not to journey with him. Her being a Pokemon trainer was to find Ash. You could say that her journey was to find Ash then it is over right? After she found Ash her journey is technically over. So now she was rather in *ASH'S JOURNEY* Further proved by her suprised face when her mother allowed her to go on a journey and when Ash asks her to come with him . This is when she really starts her journey with Ash. She was accompanying Ash in *his journey* for the reason of staying away from Rhyhorn racing. It is the same case as Clemont, he wasn't on a journey but after he was inspired by Ash he started on his journey or rather on Ash's Journey , he hoped to find answers to his problems through Ash, and Serena too, she thought something interesting would happen and it involved Ash. And to her mother she said that she was going to get Pokemon for herself not really indicating a journey whatsoever But as she found her goal, she had to have a journey to pursue it. I mean looking back at the episode. Why was Ash bragging about him being able to ride a rhyhorn to someone who he barely knows? I think so that if Ash never was helped by Serena for rhyhorn racing , or basically if her mother thought that she wasn't doing her rhyhorn race practice properly, she wouldn't have let her go.

When it comes to May and Norman, though, this daughter doesn't really stick to her father's normal-type. While she does have Munchlax and Skitty, two normal Pokémon, she also has Blaziken, Wartortle, and Beautifly. At most, this shows how absent Norman can be. However, it could have been cool to have normal-type Pokémon on display in May's roster. They never get very much love. Instead, May just picks up a menagerie.
Here is my ranking of Ash’s companions. First off Ash is the best character, I wouldn’t be watching the anime if I didn’t like the main character, he has his ups and downs and that just makes him more human, and kind of relatable. I don’t think there are different Ash’s in every series, no that’s stupid, it’s the same guy. Now for the ranking of his companions. #1 Serena: like you said easily one of the best written characters, makes Misty as a character look like shit honestly. Cutting her hair is like a Japanese tradition that if you want to start fresh you cut your hair, yes her crush on Ash is something people always say “uh you only like her because she likes Ash derrrrrrrrrrrr!” And I’m like bruh, watch her development. The crush was merely the cherry on top. #2 Dawn: Ok personal bias as how May was your first Crush, Dawn was mine. I loved her positivity. Her character development was amazing, and again makes Misty as a character look like shit. Dawn both develops as a Character and works hard towards her goal, and Misty barely does either. Also seeing how clever giving her piplup, a Pokémon with pride and a lot of confidence just matched Dawn to a T. And her English voice tho was cute. #3 Lillie: Great Backstory, and I know the 2 characters above don’t have lots of backstory, but they just began there adventure, we witnessed them start there story, it’s not like Misty where she was already on an adventure we didn’t witness and we get absolutely nothing from her. Lillie was likable, but her voice sounded like Minny Mouse, kind of questionable but not terrible. Great character development and worked hard towards multiple goals as to touch Pokémon again and Become independent by mastering her Z move. #4 Clemont: great catch phrase, loved the reverse Brock where Bonnie proposed for him and he had to drag her away out of embarrassment. I sound like a broken record, great character development, and all that good stuff that the people had above. #5 Bonnie: Literally Max done right, totally agree. Endearing, she has a reason to exist, as Clemont actually has a little sister in game. She is not just there to take up space, she’s relevant and plays a major role, and all the good stuff the above characters have besides a backstory but come on, she’s 6 years old and happy. What backstory does she really need? #6 Brock: This character grew on me. My very first series was Diamond and Pearl, and I liked him best there, the away they would make him look handsome in the dpp series was great, all his Pokémon felt like actual characters in Hoenn and DPP, just a great character all around. #7 Kiawe: basically what you said, that’s all. #8 Mallow: Again everything you said, that’s it, loved her character and her design, hey don’t judge me, she cute. You gonna deny it? #9 Lana: Everything you said about her. #10 Cilan: now I don’t agree with him being a quote “discount Brock” he’s his own character, if he flirted with girls I’d agree but he doesn’t, in fact since he was so close to his goal and was so mature as a character already, what development did he need, if anything he served as a mentor for other people to grow, he did learn things on his journey in the episode where Cilan brother chili returns and he says “ I learned while traveling with Ash that I need to learn what moves best compliment my Pokémon and not what I think is best.” And you are a bit inconsistent with your opinion on him, first you call him a delight or something around that, you liked his character and the later call him boring even though you liked him as comic relief? Clarify please. Fun fact, in the English dub Cilan is voiced by Sonic the Hedgehog. #11 May: everything you said except for the crush on her. #12 Iris: I honestly don’t get all the hate? In my personal opinion she is misty done right. She gets actual backstory, all her Pokémon, we learn how she caught them. She develops as a character to consider her Pokémon’s feelings, just one example. All her Pokémon felt like actual characters. She works hard towards her goal to be a stronger trainer as she actually trains her Pokémon on screen. Unlike a certain other character I’ve been bashing so far. If iris was only more likable, people would see why she is a good character, but if you don’t like somebody, you stop caring about them and your vision becomes clouded. It’s ad really, and I know her character did take a hit because of the tragic earthquake event that changed the events of the BW anime, wish that never happened so those people would still be alive first and foremost and the anime wouldn’t be changed which is of less importance. But her character does come full circle, she doesn’t beat drayden but she shows how much better she has gotten and while it probably wouldn’t be as satisfying as what we would have gotten originally, it’s still good in my personal opinion. She is a still a overall well written character but not a likable one tho, at least for others. She is by no means a “discount Misty.” In my personal opinion. #13 Sophocles: basically what you said. Fun fact the voice of Bonnie is also the voice of Sophocles. #14 Max: What you said. #15 Tracy: easily the most forgettable character, but I don’t hate him, he has a goal, he achieved his dream of meeting and working with Professor Oak, had some spotlight just for him but just not memorable, easily the worst male traveling companion. #16 Misty: now in game I like Misty, but she was so poorly executed in the anime, basically everything you said, no direction with her character, heck she wanted to be a stronger trainer but never trained her Pokémon, all she did was abuse Psyduck, also Ash’s Oshawott and Dawn’s piplup is Misty’s psyduck done right, they are comic relief but they grow as characters and become stronger. And they don’t rely on a gimmick all the time to be funny. She suddenly gets mega evolution in sun and moon and to be honest it doesn’t feel earned at all. It’s as of the writers said “we fucked her character up bad, let’s show her how much progress she has made by giving her a Mega stone with no backstory or explanation to how she got it. And she never gets backstory at all and most of her Pokémon, goldeen, horsea sand starmie, almost all of them are either one dimensional or don’t feel like characters at all, she didn’t need goldeen, all her Pokémon could do it’s job, it could have been shown off in other ways in the anime, I know it’s note her fault she couldn’t use them often because they weren’t always near water, but then just don’t give her fish Pokémon then, or Pokémon confined to the sea, give her a corsola and a poliwag and poliwhirl with great character potential and scrap it into a one dimensional character in politoed. Easily the worst character ever in the anime, in my personal opinion.
Shiny Zoroark if I did, my channel would be called “The5thGenGamer” as the gen 5 games are my favorite, but I think after I get my degree in engineering and make a good living with it, I’ll make my channel as a hobby. And then donate the money I make from the channel to charity.
May's Eevee, conversely, spent 7 episodes in it's egg. After that? The Eeevee spent even longer not evolving. They didn't evolve until after May left Ash and it became a Glaceon. Though she isn't the most natural Pokémon trainer, her egg shouldn't have taken so long. Even if Pokémon is habitually great at breaking its own rules, it does slow down adventuring subplots by keeping Eevee in the egg.
I always felt Tracy was an underrated character. Sure he replace Brock who is my favorite Pokemon traveling companion, but I find him a decent replacement. Definitely way better then both Iris and Cilan. I really disliked Cilan so much. As girl companions my favorite is Dawn. but I do like Misty due to nostalgia. Gen 6 and 7 of the anime I need to watch as I stopped watching the anime after the Black and White era.

I love Pokémon XY and XYZ ITS JUST SO AMAZING ASH-grenninja and i love Serena and im going to be honest i cried when bonnie was singing to zigard because you can see how much she cared about it and how much she fought for him its just amazing its by far my fav series of Pokémon

I shipped Ash with May, Dawn, Iris, Lillie, Mallow and Lana but I shipped Ash with Serena and don't forget that Ash died for May and he saved Dawn many times throuhout DP and the movies and maybe May could fall in love with Ash too and Lillie could fall in love as well
Max has always been one of my favourites, despite many finding him annoying. I understand what you mean though, about a missed opportunity with him. Still, the episode where he first meets Ash has me in stitches every time!
Me too.Bro the whole hoenn could have been boring but because of Max there were many episodes that where funny interesting and also sometimes emotional .People hate max because he roasted ash in the beginning but they forgot that as the journey goes he respects ash a lot and also sees ash and brock as his mentor and he was the first character after ash to be the main character in the series and also the anime gave him good storylines with ash and may so we can't compare him with tracey who got nothing. He was annoying I agree but he had a lot of potential to become a great trainer .I wish he returns as an adult not as a kid and that is possible only if ash ages 😂😂😂😂 and also I want bonnie to return as an adult not kid
Making things worse with Iris is her snarking at Ash's expense is a clear attempt to recreate the dynamic with Misty in the early seasons. Except Ash would also make remarks at Misty's expense, so it was even. Him being written as much kinder by Black & White causes Iris to look like a bully. Rather than trying to make Iris like Misty, the anime should have written her as a mix of Ash in his early days with May. Ash acts as the mentor. Iris doesn't take Ash seriously given his defeats in tournaments, a bit of a jab at his detractors, and Ash defeats Iris, reminding her and the audience that not winning tournaments doesn't make him weak. Iris learns to respect Ash and also takes to heart some lessons his learned in accepting defeat. I agree with the points about Misty. Past the first few episodes, she clearly isn't any better a trainer than Ash given her underhanded tricks to keep Pikachu out of the match. Throughout Kanto, she is an even lazier trainer than Ash which causes her criticism of him, especially after his loss in the Indigo League, to feel backhanded. Once Ash steps his game up, Misty loses a lot of credibility as a more mature trainer. The worst moment I can think of for her is when she got her ass kicked by a rock/fire Pokemon, and while she gives some advice that helps an inexperienced trainer, the new guy succeeding where Misty failed despite using a fire Pokemon just makes her look pathetic.
I’m really happy Bonnie got some recognition in this list. She’s definitely one of my favourites. But my favourite of Ash’s companions is Cilan. The reason, I’d not know, he just is.
I like XY better than AG overall, but let me be the minority that sides with Max over Bonnie. While both are nominally Little Kid characters, the thought process that went into making them is quite different. Max is a character-driven character, while Bonnie is a plot-driven character. Max was designed as this 7-year-old who liked Pokemon and thus studied them, thus giving him a pool of theoretical knowledge that can exceed many 10-year-olds who are actually getting their Pokemon. Everything about him flows naturally from this premise. He looks down on Ash at first in the same manner of a Monday morning quarterback. He butts heads with his somewhat unreliable 10 year old sister who, despite being a Gym Leader's daughter, is lacking in even basic knowledge of Pokemon. His theoretical knowledge also leads to him having what for a little kid is an unusual battling style, with an emphasis on power up moves before attacking. Yes, he overemphasizes the usage, but it is still an interesting choice because most kids would reach for the direct attack options first - that a 7 year old even remembers the existence of support moves is pretty nice. He looks over any Pokemon May isn't taking care of, which is actually important because otherwise they would spill over directly onto Ash and Brock's laps, making May's irresponsibility very apparent. And he takes over the electronic navigation. So he's actually, if not irreplaceable, making himself useful, which is all you can realistically expect a 7 year old to do in a group with two 10-year-olds and a 15-year old. And that point, "realism", is the point - the show does give him work to do, but it keeps it within what can be expected of a 7 year old. Bonnie, on the other hand, is made trying to learn from Max. First, while it took until XY&Z for the answer to come out, they gave her a very specific role - that of Zygarde's Holder. Everything before then is trying to build her up to that point. Further, before that they decided to make her useful to the group. So they made her more physically able than her brother Clemont despite him being several years older. That way, she can have a "clear role" as the physical person of their duo. They also made her mature for her age. When Max dives into a pool of kids about his age, he doesn't stand out - an individual, but not a head above. When Bonnie dives into a pool of kids about her age, she stands out as the Mature One. Further, her interactions with Clemont are more stylized than Max's are with May. Bonnie will go invite a woman until Clemont puts a stop to it. Or Clemont will put out a new machine, Bonnie will complain about the naming, and then when it blows up she'd say "Oh you failed again, Brother". They do have other interactions, but these are the most common and thus much of what anyone remembers about them centers on these two. You might also note that Bonnie is the troublemaker, while when Max pulls Brock way, he is the trouble-stopper. Why Max gets hit so hard for Brock's vices I do not understand. Meanwhile, in terms of brattiness, I actually think Bonnie is more of a brat than Max. You might remember how Bonnie keeps insisting that everyone risk themselves to save Squishy against a team of adults that want Squishy very very much. Because of "meta", the audience understands what's going on - Squishy is Zygarde and Team Flare are the bad guys - he's worth saving. But if you take an in-universe perspective, Squishy was basically this mysterious useless-looking blob that they hadn't even met for that long. Objectively, he's not worth risking the rest of the group on. These mysterious adults might even have legal rights to Squishy for all Bonnie knows. But Bonnie keeps wailing and insisting. That it is in-story the right move should not conceal from us how bratty and irresponsible Bonnie's behavior really was. I don’t think I see anything quite that bratty from Max. So I hope people kind of understand why while I like Bonnie too, Max is a head above Bonnie. Clemort is a better brother than May because both Clemort and Bonnie love Pokemon while May hates Pokemon. I wish Max and Dawn are sibling not only their mom has blue hair but they are smart, love and know the history of pokemon, and Dawn might be giving Max a Pokemon suit for him. Did you know that Max became a Mewtwo while Jirachi became Amber?
Well we’ve already seen Korrina so I definitely expect Serena to come back in Journeys because she’s the most popular. When Ash goes back to Alola I think there’s no doubt that he’ll meet up with Kukui and Burnet as well as some friends from there. Other than that idk. Dawn may return if they make Diamond and Pearl remakes.
If Laurie Hymes wasn't so annoying to listen to, Lillie would probably be my second favourite companion. Dawn is my favourite but in terms of writing, Lillie's the only other companion who's close to her level. The way the writers handled her trauma was brilliant and far more mature than I think anybody would have expected considering Sun and Moon's childish art style. Due to Laurie Hymes, Lillie's been demoted from my 2nd favourite companion to my 4th favourite, after Brock, who's consistently great for his combination of maturity and comedic advances on women, and Iris. Yeah, sue me, I like Iris because she was the only redeeming feature of Black and White until Dawn and Cynthia showed up. She was childish and sometimes annoying but that emphasised how much she'd grown by the time we saw her go toe to toe with Cynthia in Journeys, whereas Cilan was just annoying and Ash regressed back to his Kanto level retardedness. Speaking of Cynthia, if we count her as one of Ash's companions, considering how often she's interacted with him (Pikachu literally leapt into her arms when they reunited in Journeys which speaks volumes about how fond he is of her), she's the only one who's close to being on Dawn's level and might have even edged out ahead of her.
Misty deserves to be in the top 5 and even a better position than Serena. Apart from her crush on Ash, Serena has done nothing to be the best companion. The fact is that Brock is the best companion Ash has ever had. He is what he is now because of Brock and support of Misty. Serena is just a romantic side of the anime. But Brock and Misty are way beyond Serena. I know there are people who love Serena. But she can't be the best companion. Misty and Brock are the second and first respectively. And that's the fact. Because you like Serena doesn't mean she's the best and Misty should be in the bottom than top 10.

MY RANK ON MY OPINION 17-Sophocles- I don't like his character that much. 16- Tracey- He's basically a dude who watches pokemon and sketches them. 15- Iris- For me she was kinda annoying in the series but I still like her. 14- Max- Idk why I just don't like him that much. 13- Lana- Even though she's always quiet I like her because she listens to other people. 12- Mallow- I kinda don't like her personality a bit just 2 % and other than that she's not that bad. 11- May- She was actually kind of a sister and I like her personality. 10- Cilan- I really like him but for me he didn't really develop as a character. 9-Misty- I like her but she's like Kris but obviously way more better Nad nicer. 8-Kiawe- He looks super nice to me. 7- Goh- I really like him. 6- Lillie- She is by far the one that has the most character development. I do like Ash’s friends in the Alola region, although I wouldn’t call them traveling companions, most of their shenanigans take place at or near the Pokémon school. Yeah, Sophocles is a weak link for me too, I don’t like him as much as the others. But my favorite might be Dawn

If there is any definitive moment that might explain why she doesn't like Pokémon, it would be this. Especially if her parents, on a regular basis, confuse her or ignore her for Pokémon.
Otherwise, though, her parents confusing her for an actual creature doesn't help their case. They really should be able to tell their daughter from a random Pokémon. That's basic parenting.

Dawn is easily Ash's best companion. She had to fight her way up through sheer passion and hard work whereas other companions like May were given easy and often undeserved victories simply by virtue of being a main character. Dawn beating May in the Wallace Cup is one of the most cathartic moments in the entire Pokemon anime because we saw how hard she had to work to get there. She lost in the appeal round of 2 contests in a row while May NEVER lost in the appeal round, even with performances that were objectively weaker than Dawn's such as when Skitty botched Blizzard and had to resort to juggling instead.
Also, Iris is underrated, mostly because she was part of the disastrous Black and White series. However, I think she was by far the best part of it, to the point where I'd say that, apart from when Cynthia and Dawn showed up, she was that series' only redeeming feature. Yeah, she could be annoying and childish but I think that was the point, which is emphasised by how pissed off Excadrill was with her for a good chunk of her early development.
Here's how I would have written Iris' battle with Cynthia. First of all, it should have been a 6 on 6. Second, Iris has Lapras, both to represent the one she has in the games and the manga and show that she's completely overcome her fear of Ice types.
Iris starts with Emolga and Cynthia uses Togekiss. Togekiss loses and is replaced by Gastrodon who defeats Emolga. Iris sends out Lapras, who defeats Gastrodon before battling Kommo-o. Lapras uses Rain Dance, Rest and Hydration to heal back to full strength and defeats Kommo-o. Cynthia's Glaceon then defeats Lapras with Mirror Coat before losing to Excadrill, who sets up Sandstorm, which proves to be a massive mistake when Cynthia sends out Garchomp.
After defeating Excadrill with a single attack, Garchomp faces off against Iris' own Garchomp, whom Iris immediately Mega Evolves. However, Cynthia's Garchomp uses her superior Speed and Sand Veil Ability to evade and chip away at Iris' Garchomp before finally getting hit with a Sand Force boosted Earthquake (seriously, they should have brought Earthquake back to the anime by now). Cynthia's Garchomp then Mega Evolves as Sandstorm wears off, meaning that she can't benefit from Sand Force but endures Iris' Garchomp's Draco Meteor and knocks him out with Dragon Rush.
Iris sends out Dragonite but Mega Garchomp defeats him easily, further emphasising how vast the power difference is between her and Iris' Pokemon.
Finally, Iris sends out Haxorus, who goes berserk with Outrage and wears Mega Garchomp down before becoming confused. Just like in the anime, he snaps out of it by slamming his head into the ground which Cynthia mistakenly thinks is an opening. She orders Mega Garchomp to use Dragon Rush but Haxorus counters with Giga Impact and, unlike Iris' Garchomp and Dragonite, manages to match Cynthia's Garchomp (albeit only because she's already tired) and knock her out.
However, Iris' victory is short lived as Milotic easily defeats Haxorus without even taking any damage, blocking his Outrage with the Fairy type Disarming Voice and knocking him out with Twister. This would emphasise that although Iris got an early lead and became the first onscreen character to defeat Cynthia's ace, she's still not in the same league.

Although my list has changed slightly since I posted this comment, with Journe's conclusion I can now put Chloe and Goh on the list, Chloe's in dead last, but Goh managed to knock Brock right off third place as my new third favorite.
I actually write some crossover fanfics involving Pokemon and I usually do this where instead of having Ash's whole group or just Misty and Brock, I pick the top three Dawn, Serena, and Goh. There are a few varients of course, when I started making those crossovers Sun and Moon was still going on so Goh hadn't been introduced yet, but for all the crossovers written a decent bit after Journey's Goh has been present in almost all stories, same with Dawn and Serena.

Even though May hated Pokémon, May was quick to try to use Mudkip's help in a dire situation. Unfortunately, though, something between Mudkips and May just don't mesh. In other situations, they've spit water at her and avoided her presence. Until Squirtle, she has a pretty bad time with water starter Pokémon.
However, she is the daughter of a gym leader and a kind person. Even if she didn't like Pokémon, she wasn't cruel. The fact Mudkips don't like her so much is part-way hilarious, part-way ludicrous.
Guess Torchic and her were always meant to be.

When it comes to Pokémon coordinator contests, the aesthetic is just as important as the strength. Some of May's strongest events used abilities that dazzled instead of worked functionally. Along with the moves, though, come the outfits.
Each coordinator has a unique look and style to their displays. In her original Pokémon run, May sticks to her functional, yet cute, jacket/skirt combo most of the time. By the time Dawn is the main heroine and she shows up as a rival coordinator, though, her outfit is much different. Most of the time, outfits reflect personality or heritage. With her vaguely Arabian style, May does neither. It's a boggling choice.
My favorites are Dawn, Serena, Clemont, Bonnie, and Lillie.

I can get the criticisms of Cilan lacking development, but I hate it so much when people call him a copy of Brock. The only thing that Cilan and Brock have in common is that they cook and they commentate everything that's happening in battle. By that logic, Clemont would also be a copy of Brock, which is straight-up wrong. Cilan and Brock have insanely different personalities and their running gags are both vastly different. It really de-values Cilan as a character to call him a copy of Brock.
Serena the main reason is because she the first girl in the Pokemon série who was written to be in love with Ash PLUS the kiss at the if XYZ was just the cherry on to of the cake. She definitely has to come back even though it's going to be a bit awkward because of the way they each other but even though SHE HAS TO COME BACK!

Also let's not forget when May and Muchlax met, the hungry Pokémon was hunting for her heavy Pokéblocks. Though none of her other Pokemon were interested in them because of how extremely inedible it was, Munchlax adored them. For that simple reason alone, May was happy to accept Muchlax and call him her own.
Even though Munchlax eventually became one of May's most beloved partners, her reasoning for keeping him was fairly weak. It's basically a sad shrug of adventure companions. Pokémon deserve better love than just "why not" situation.
Between her terrible yuck Pokéblocks and Munchlax deserving better, it's a pretty disappointing catch. May is not the best character.
Of course may is not high on the list. If she had romantic feelings for ash then everyone will like her, just like Misty and Serena. But at least may isnt loved because of shipping.

W for almost being an Aureliashipper 4 years ago. Honestly, when I look at what’s on the table, I find Lillie to be way more compatible with Ash than Serena or anyone else; the impact they’ve had on each other, family connections (let’s be honest, did Serena even meet Ash’s mom?), the affection’s more mutual in my opinion, and Ash just generally has a really strong connection to Alola so him having a girlfriend from there only makes sense. They just have more of a connection in my opinion

I am super late now 😂, but hey ayaanic bond, I rewatched the series, and got to really know that Serena didn't really start *her journey* , she first went to MEET Ash not to journey with him. Her being a Pokemon trainer was to find Ash. You could say that her journey was to find Ash then it is over right? After she found Ash her journey is technically over. So now she was rather in *ASH'S JOURNEY*
Further proved by her suprised face when her mother allowed her to go on a journey and when Ash asks her to come with him . This is when she really starts her journey with Ash.
She was accompanying Ash in *his journey* for the reason of staying away from Rhyhorn racing.
It is the same case as Clemont, he wasn't on a journey but after he was inspired by Ash he started on his journey or rather on Ash's Journey , he hoped to find answers to his problems through Ash, and Serena too, she thought something interesting would happen and it involved Ash.
And to her mother she said that she was going to get Pokemon for herself not really indicating a journey whatsoever
But as she found her goal, she had to have a journey to pursue it. This is what I call a well written character

When it comes to May and Norman, though, this daughter doesn't really stick to her father's normal-type. While she does have Munchlax and Skitty, two normal Pokémon, she also has Blaziken, Wartortle, and Beautifly.
At most, this shows how absent Norman can be. However, it could have been cool to have normal-type Pokémon on display in May's roster. They never get very much love. Instead, May just picks up a menagerie.
Here is my ranking of Ash’s companions.
First off Ash is the best character, I wouldn’t be watching the anime if I didn’t like the main character, he has his ups and downs and that just makes him more human, and kind of relatable. I don’t think there are different Ash’s in every series, no that’s stupid, it’s the same guy. Now for the ranking of his companions.
#1 Serena: like you said easily one of the best written characters, makes Misty as a character look like shit honestly. Cutting her hair is like a Japanese tradition that if you want to start fresh you cut your hair, yes her crush on Ash is something people always say “uh you only like her because she likes Ash derrrrrrrrrrrr!” And I’m like bruh, watch her development. The crush was merely the cherry on top.
#2 Dawn: Ok personal bias as how May was your first Crush, Dawn was mine. I loved her positivity. Her character development was amazing, and again makes Misty as a character look like shit. Dawn both develops as a Character and works hard towards her goal, and Misty barely does either. Also seeing how clever giving her piplup, a Pokémon with pride and a lot of confidence just matched Dawn to a T. And her English voice tho was cute.
#3 Lillie: Great Backstory, and I know the 2 characters above don’t have lots of backstory, but they just began there adventure, we witnessed them start there story, it’s not like Misty where she was already on an adventure we didn’t witness and we get absolutely nothing from her. Lillie was likable, but her voice sounded like Minny Mouse, kind of questionable but not terrible. Great character development and worked hard towards multiple goals as to touch Pokémon again and Become independent by mastering her Z move.
#4 Clemont: great catch phrase, loved the reverse Brock where Bonnie proposed for him and he had to drag her away out of embarrassment. I sound like a broken record, great character development, and all that good stuff that the people had above.
#5 Bonnie: Literally Max done right, totally agree. Endearing, she has a reason to exist, as Clemont actually has a little sister in game. She is not just there to take up space, she’s relevant and plays a major role, and all the good stuff the above characters have besides a backstory but come on, she’s 6 years old and happy. What backstory does she really need?
#6 Brock: This character grew on me. My very first series was Diamond and Pearl, and I liked him best there, the away they would make him look handsome in the dpp series was great, all his Pokémon felt like actual characters in Hoenn and DPP, just a great character all around.
#7 Kiawe: basically what you said, that’s all.
#8 Mallow: Again everything you said, that’s it, loved her character and her design, hey don’t judge me, she cute. You gonna deny it?
#9 Lana: Everything you said about her.
#10 Cilan: now I don’t agree with him being a quote “discount Brock” he’s his own character, if he flirted with girls I’d agree but he doesn’t, in fact since he was so close to his goal and was so mature as a character already, what development did he need, if anything he served as a mentor for other people to grow, he did learn things on his journey in the episode where Cilan brother chili returns and he says “ I learned while traveling with Ash that I need to learn what moves best compliment my Pokémon and not what I think is best.” And you are a bit inconsistent with your opinion on him, first you call him a delight or something around that, you liked his character and the later call him boring even though you liked him as comic relief? Clarify please. Fun fact, in the English dub Cilan is voiced by Sonic the Hedgehog.
#11 May: everything you said except for the crush on her.
#12 Iris: I honestly don’t get all the hate? In my personal opinion she is misty done right. She gets actual backstory, all her Pokémon, we learn how she caught them. She develops as a character to consider her Pokémon’s feelings, just one example. All her Pokémon felt like actual characters. She works hard towards her goal to be a stronger trainer as she actually trains her Pokémon on screen. Unlike a certain other character I’ve been bashing so far. If iris was only more likable, people would see why she is a good character, but if you don’t like somebody, you stop caring about them and your vision becomes clouded. It’s ad really, and I know her character did take a hit because of the tragic earthquake event that changed the events of the BW anime, wish that never happened so those people would still be alive first and foremost and the anime wouldn’t be changed which is of less importance. But her character does come full circle, she doesn’t beat drayden but she shows how much better she has gotten and while it probably wouldn’t be as satisfying as what we would have gotten originally, it’s still good in my personal opinion. She is a still a overall well written character but not a likable one tho, at least for others. She is by no means a “discount Misty.” In my personal opinion.
#13 Sophocles: basically what you said. Fun fact the voice of Bonnie is also the voice of Sophocles.
#14 Max: What you said.
#15 Tracy: easily the most forgettable character, but I don’t hate him, he has a goal, he achieved his dream of meeting and working with Professor Oak, had some spotlight just for him but just not memorable, easily the worst male traveling companion.
#16 Misty: now in game I like Misty, but she was so poorly executed in the anime, basically everything you said, no direction with her character, heck she wanted to be a stronger trainer but never trained her Pokémon, all she did was abuse Psyduck, also Ash’s Oshawott and Dawn’s piplup is Misty’s psyduck done right, they are comic relief but they grow as characters and become stronger. And they don’t rely on a gimmick all the time to be funny. She suddenly gets mega evolution in sun and moon and to be honest it doesn’t feel earned at all. It’s as of the writers said “we fucked her character up bad, let’s show her how much progress she has made by giving her a Mega stone with no backstory or explanation to how she got it. And she never gets backstory at all and most of her Pokémon, goldeen, horsea sand starmie, almost all of them are either one dimensional or don’t feel like characters at all, she didn’t need goldeen, all her Pokémon could do it’s job, it could have been shown off in other ways in the anime, I know it’s note her fault she couldn’t use them often because they weren’t always near water, but then just don’t give her fish Pokémon then, or Pokémon confined to the sea, give her a corsola and a poliwag and poliwhirl with great character potential and scrap it into a one dimensional character in politoed. Easily the worst character ever in the anime, in my personal opinion.

May's Eevee, conversely, spent 7 episodes in it's egg. After that? The Eeevee spent even longer not evolving. They didn't evolve until after May left Ash and it became a Glaceon.
Though she isn't the most natural Pokémon trainer, her egg shouldn't have taken so long. Even if Pokémon is habitually great at breaking its own rules, it does slow down adventuring subplots by keeping Eevee in the egg.
Dawn is my favorite. I love her interactions and friendship with Ash, it's so adorable.

I always felt Tracy was an underrated character. Sure he replace Brock who is my favorite Pokemon traveling companion, but I find him a decent replacement. Definitely way better then both Iris and Cilan. I really disliked Cilan so much. As girl companions my favorite is Dawn. but I do like Misty due to nostalgia. Gen 6 and 7 of the anime I need to watch as I stopped watching the anime after the Black and White era.

Max has always been one of my favourites, despite many finding him annoying. I understand what you mean though, about a missed opportunity with him. Still, the episode where he first meets Ash has me in stitches every time!

Making things worse with Iris is her snarking at Ash's expense is a clear attempt to recreate the dynamic with Misty in the early seasons. Except Ash would also make remarks at Misty's expense, so it was even. Him being written as much kinder by Black & White causes Iris to look like a bully.
Rather than trying to make Iris like Misty, the anime should have written her as a mix of Ash in his early days with May. Ash acts as the mentor. Iris doesn't take Ash seriously given his defeats in tournaments, a bit of a jab at his detractors, and Ash defeats Iris, reminding her and the audience that not winning tournaments doesn't make him weak. Iris learns to respect Ash and also takes to heart some lessons his learned in accepting defeat.
I agree with the points about Misty. Past the first few episodes, she clearly isn't any better a trainer than Ash given her underhanded tricks to keep Pikachu out of the match. Throughout Kanto, she is an even lazier trainer than Ash which causes her criticism of him, especially after his loss in the Indigo League, to feel backhanded.
Once Ash steps his game up, Misty loses a lot of credibility as a more mature trainer. The worst moment I can think of for her is when she got her ass kicked by a rock/fire Pokemon, and while she gives some advice that helps an inexperienced trainer, the new guy succeeding where Misty failed despite using a fire Pokemon just makes her look pathetic.
I can't wait to see how many traveling companions will return in Journeys and how many of the Poke Girls Goh will be in love with.

I’m really happy Bonnie got some recognition in this list. She’s definitely one of my favourites. But my favourite of Ash’s companions is Cilan. The reason, I’d not know, he just is.
I like XY better than AG overall, but let me be the minority that sides with Max over Bonnie.
While both are nominally Little Kid characters, the thought process that went into making them is quite different. Max is a character-driven character, while Bonnie is a plot-driven character.
Max was designed as this 7-year-old who liked Pokemon and thus studied them, thus giving him a pool of theoretical knowledge that can exceed many 10-year-olds who are actually getting their Pokemon. Everything about him flows naturally from this premise. He looks down on Ash at first in the same manner of a Monday morning quarterback. He butts heads with his somewhat unreliable 10 year old sister who, despite being a Gym Leader's daughter, is lacking in even basic knowledge of Pokemon. His theoretical knowledge also leads to him having what for a little kid is an unusual battling style, with an emphasis on power up moves before attacking. Yes, he overemphasizes the usage, but it is still an interesting choice because most kids would reach for the direct attack options first - that a 7 year old even remembers the existence of support moves is pretty nice. He looks over any Pokemon May isn't taking care of, which is actually important because otherwise they would spill over directly onto Ash and Brock's laps, making May's irresponsibility very apparent. And he takes over the electronic navigation. So he's actually, if not irreplaceable, making himself useful, which is all you can realistically expect a 7 year old to do in a group with two 10-year-olds and a 15-year old. And that point, "realism", is the point - the show does give him work to do, but it keeps it within what can be expected of a 7 year old.
Bonnie, on the other hand, is made trying to learn from Max. First, while it took until XY&Z for the answer to come out, they gave her a very specific role - that of Zygarde's Holder. Everything before then is trying to build her up to that point. Further, before that they decided to make her useful to the group. So they made her more physically able than her brother Clemont despite him being several years older. That way, she can have a "clear role" as the physical person of their duo. They also made her mature for her age. When Max dives into a pool of kids about his age, he doesn't stand out - an individual, but not a head above. When Bonnie dives into a pool of kids about her age, she stands out as the Mature One.
Further, her interactions with Clemont are more stylized than Max's are with May. Bonnie will go invite a woman until Clemont puts a stop to it. Or Clemont will put out a new machine, Bonnie will complain about the naming, and then when it blows up she'd say "Oh you failed again, Brother". They do have other interactions, but these are the most common and thus much of what anyone remembers about them centers on these two. You might also note that Bonnie is the troublemaker, while when Max pulls Brock way, he is the trouble-stopper. Why Max gets hit so hard for Brock's vices I do not understand.
Meanwhile, in terms of brattiness, I actually think Bonnie is more of a brat than Max. You might remember how Bonnie keeps insisting that everyone risk themselves to save Squishy against a team of adults that want Squishy very very much. Because of "meta", the audience understands what's going on - Squishy is Zygarde and Team Flare are the bad guys - he's worth saving. But if you take an in-universe perspective, Squishy was basically this mysterious useless-looking blob that they hadn't even met for that long. Objectively, he's not worth risking the rest of the group on. These mysterious adults might even have legal rights to Squishy for all Bonnie knows. But Bonnie keeps wailing and insisting. That it is in-story the right move should not conceal from us how bratty and irresponsible Bonnie's behavior really was.
I don’t think I see anything quite that bratty from Max. So I hope people kind of understand why while I like Bonnie too, Max is a head above Bonnie.
Clemort is a better brother than May because both Clemort and Bonnie love Pokemon while May hates Pokemon.
I wish Max and Dawn are sibling not only their mom has blue hair but they are smart, love and know the history of pokemon, and Dawn might be giving Max a Pokemon suit for him.

Well we’ve already seen Korrina so I definitely expect Serena to come back in Journeys because she’s the most popular. When Ash goes back to Alola I think there’s no doubt that he’ll meet up with Kukui and Burnet as well as some friends from there. Other than that idk. Dawn may return if they make Diamond and Pearl remakes.

If Laurie Hymes wasn't so annoying to listen to, Lillie would probably be my second favourite companion. Dawn is my favourite but in terms of writing, Lillie's the only other companion who's close to her level. The way the writers handled her trauma was brilliant and far more mature than I think anybody would have expected considering Sun and Moon's childish art style.
Due to Laurie Hymes, Lillie's been demoted from my 2nd favourite companion to my 4th favourite, after Brock, who's consistently great for his combination of maturity and comedic advances on women, and Iris. Yeah, sue me, I like Iris because she was the only redeeming feature of Black and White until Dawn and Cynthia showed up. She was childish and sometimes annoying but that emphasised how much she'd grown by the time we saw her go toe to toe with Cynthia in Journeys, whereas Cilan was just annoying and Ash regressed back to his Kanto level retardedness.
Speaking of Cynthia, if we count her as one of Ash's companions, considering how often she's interacted with him (Pikachu literally leapt into her arms when they reunited in Journeys which speaks volumes about how fond he is of her), she's the only one who's close to being on Dawn's level and might have even edged out ahead of her.

Misty deserves to be in the top 5 and even a better position than Serena. Apart from her crush on Ash, Serena has done nothing to be the best companion. The fact is that Brock is the best companion Ash has ever had. He is what he is now because of Brock and support of Misty. Serena is just a romantic side of the anime. But Brock and Misty are way beyond Serena. I know there are people who love Serena. But she can't be the best companion. Misty and Brock are the second and first respectively. And that's the fact. Because you like Serena doesn't mean she's the best and Misty should be in the bottom than top 10.

17-Sophocles- I don't like his character that much.
16- Tracey- He's basically a dude who watches pokemon and sketches them.
15- Iris- For me she was kinda annoying in the series but I still like her.
14- Max- Idk why I just don't like him that much.
13- Lana- Even though she's always quiet I like her because she listens to other people.
12- Mallow- I kinda don't like her personality a bit just 2 % and other than that she's not that bad.
11- May- She was actually kind of a sister and I like her personality.
10- Cilan- I really like him but for me he didn't really develop as a character.
9-Misty- I like her but she's like Kris but obviously way more better Nad nicer.

I do like Ash’s friends in the Alola region, although I wouldn’t call them traveling companions, most of their shenanigans take place at or near the Pokémon school. Yeah, Sophocles is a weak link for me too, I don’t like him as much as the others.
