  • In this episode of Over The Bench we look at a Husqvarna 122HD60 hedge trimmer that doesn't seem to want to make the cutters move correctly. Can you guess why?

    I just picked up my first hedge trimmer. Its a 226HD75S (30" blade). I am trying to educate myself about caring for the blade and keeping the gearbox lubricated. What is the correct way to lubricate the gear box, and care for the blade? Any pointers would be helpful as I would like to keep the unit in good working order, and I pride myself with taking care of my tools and equipment.

      Husqvarna offers a grease called Multi Advanced Grease part #596292401. Its specifically labeled for use in hedge trimmer gear boxes. I believe that unit has a grease zerk that allows for filling. I personally don't like that zerk because with a greas gun you could over fill the box and have grease end up in the clutch. I prefer the idea of removing the bottom cover and filling the gear box. As for the blades, check the bolts for tightness, sharpen the blades and use some lube to prevent rust. I like using Fluid Film because it is lanolin based and won't harm plants.

      @@TheGreasyShopRag Thank you for swift response. How often would you recommend adding grease to the gear box to avoid the problem that was shown in the video? Would taking the unit apart to clean the old grease out annually be something I should consider?

      @@andrewvisiko5250 This is a pro grade trimmer and husky recommends adding grease every 50 hours. Many home owners won't put on 50 hours in their lifetime. Having said that, my suggestion is if you don't meet the recommended service interval then service it annually.

      @@TheGreasyShopRag Yeah that is probably true, I am only using it to trim about a half dozen hedges a few times a season. I picked this unit up used for $100. It looks like it has been barley ever used though. The air filter still looks brand new. Blades are in excellent shape. I knew I wanted a gas unit, and everything else on the market was more money, or in worse condition. I think I got a great deal, and I want to keep the unit in good working order for a long time.

    Wait, so you are saying you shouldn't just pump the grease gun empty because the zerk lets you? Crazy.

    • @TheGreasyShopRag
      @TheGreasyShopRag  3 года назад +2

      Even if they only put in a few pumps after each use it wouldn't take long for this to happen. I get it, not everyone understands equipment. Good thing or i'd be out of a job.
