The Greasy Shop Rag

My name is Scott and I work at a small engine repair shop as a mechanic. I specialize in 2 cycle and handheld outdoor power equipment. The videos you'll see here are actual customer repairs on that type of equipment. After the repair I'll do a voice-over to explain what is happening and help you to perform the same repair yourself. You'll also find helpful tips and shop practices that you may find useful in your own workshop. And of course as a mechanic I'll have to add some tool related videos as well.

Husqvarna 450 Chainsaw Runs Backwards!
Just replaced fuel lines in a few of my saws that all take the pigtail! They were all leaking where it goes into the tank. I probably could of pulled them up or down some and got more use but i like to do it right! See ya next time!
Hi Scott. A lot of your repairs seem to be stiff diaphragms and broken/dissolved fuel lines. What's your opinion on alkylat fuels? Here in Sweden most people run their saws on Aspen 2 instead of mixing their own with fuel from the gas station. Is it better or worse for the fuel lines and carbs?
Great work bro
Nice repair. I have a Husqvarna 350. Leaks bar oil out as fast as you pour it in. Was a great saw. What does the 45 on the cylinder head mean. ? Have a great day. 👍🏻👍🏻👋👋
Thanks Scott! I always learn from your videos
Super!!
🔥😁
Good find, easier to repair. Think it was from ethanol fuel? Hope ya feel better.
Excellent Repair Brother 😀😊😇👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Tks a million for your time and video 😊.
OK, Scot; what movie freature character would describe your repair as; "Dat be ET"? Show your age by knowing.
Dunno. I must be young :-)
@@TheGreasyShopRag Our Gang or the Liggle Rascals character "Buvkwheat". "Teacher, dat be ET".
Would like to see how you get the fuel line through the upper casing.
The fuel line needs to be cut at an angle so some of it easily pushes through. Then just grab that end and pull.
That vacuum/pressure gauge looks to be an essential piece of equipment for a small engine mechanic. Cheers
It really does make diagnosing a lot easier.
Thanks for sharing Scott!
Thanks for watching!
Could you use a qtip and high temp grease or toilet wax ring. Fill the heads up. ?
Nice video Scott. Even if there are torque specs, I suspect that you have fixed more of these than the person who wrote the manual. Laaaaaater.
Thanks, I have fixed a fair amount.
Great video! That is something I have overlooked, thanks
Thanks for watching!
That's it? Alright then, I'll look around for another video on this matter 😮.
Do you have a question about the procedure?
One day, a closer look at how that choke lever runs would be worth the time. Sometimes the wide angle view doesn't get the necessary detail.
Ya I get it. My boss lets me hang a camera over the bench so I really just use the video I can get from that. Thanks for watching!
Hmmmmmmmmm 🤔 I like your video neighbor LATER- btw teespring is doing me Hella dirty I didn't forget your t shirt!!
I've got other t-shirts.
spark arrestor was air tight - burnt it off runs like a dream - thanks very much.

Love your videos. I've seen them all. Jon from Nova scotia Canada

I liked your explanation of the 4 stoke guys. 🤭🤭 I’m in Canada so I’m out of the contest. 👋
Thanks for watching!
Awesome videos. I'm so close to getting a 435 or 440 - any thoughts on reliability /ease of service compared to an Echo 4010?
Of the three saws you mentioned, I like the 440 best.
@@TheGreasyShopRag Thanks Scott! Love the vids! You don't hear much of the newer version of Echos - trying to figure out which was a more reliable saw that was easy to work on if something happened. Thanks much!
That funnel set-up is a great Idea
That's awesome! I need something like that at work and home
It works great. It also bounces a bit and makes it sound like I'm slamming chainsaws on the bench 🙂
Great find, Scott 👍🏼
"Scott, line 1 please...." sent a shudder down my spine. Great. Nothing like having your job interrupted. It's amazing you can even get things done. And the sound editing is fine, i'm just happy you finally updated us on your Arby's intake. Thought maybe you went vegan...
Constant interruptions are a problem and we've tried to fix it but its not working. Answer phone, sell equipment, handle questions from the counter, fill LP tanks, load landscape materials, help other techs, the list goes on. I'm not getting yelled at for being behind so I don't complain. I did a video a long time ago about curly fries. I wonder how many people remember that?
@@TheGreasyShopRag The one where you went through the Arby's drivethru. One of my favorites. Good times.
Why wouldn’t you point out where the oil Feed hole is located? We come to you tube to figure out our own problems and not experts.
I guess because I'm not an expert at making videos. This one is two years old. I've put out 2 videos a week since this was made and I've learned a lot from viewer comments like this. I like to think that my most recent videos are better. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment.
You don’t put a blue fuel filter?
I left the original one on until I knew the rest of the saw was ok. I later put a blue one on at 18:24.
Your editing is fine. It's really pretty flowing and seamless. I've seen some channels that think they're Spielberg but the actual content is garbage, you're good
Thanks, I appreciate that because it does take up a lot of time.
Husqvarna provides torque specs for that model trimmer
By Golly you're right!
I see mainly husqvarna equipment on your bench. I assume you are a husqvarna dealer. Are you also a stihl dealer?
We sell Husqvarna and Echo saws but not Stihl. We accept any brand for repair including Stihl but I'm not able to work with M-tronic.
Great catch! I could see how your muscle memory 1st wiggled the carb and found it loose before just digging into it and finding nothing wrong. I wonder how many people would chase their tail for an hour for not doing that 1st?
Plenty. My favorite work orders start by saying, "had it at another shop..." But its not necessarily the shops fault. Finding help is tough these days. We lost some major talent over the last few years and I feel we are just now getting back to that level of knowledge we had back then.
Great vid... What's the easiest saw in the cc class to work on?
The Husqvarna 400 series saws are pretty simple.
@@TheGreasyShopRag Thanks Scott - really appreciate your input. Great vids!
Great ‘a-ha’ moment for me when you explained how to adjust the high speed jet without a tach. Great vid.
Theres a problem with using a tach that a newb might overlook. If the spec calls for lets say 12,000 rpm and peak rpm is 13,000, you can't just find 12,000 and call it good. 12,000 will occur twice. Once on the rich side of peak and once on the lean side of peak. Not knowing the difference can cost you a top end. Thanks for watching!
@@TheGreasyShopRag Great point!
The contest is over and we have a winner! I ran off for a French Dip at Arbys and when I came back three of you had the right answer an hour previous to this posting. I said that when the piston moves down it draws air into the engine but thats incorrect unless you're working on one of those dirty disgusting four strokes that swim in their own filth. Air is drawn in on the up stroke on a 2 cycle and Ted Neitzel, Alans.4658 and Jamiewykes8585 all corrected me. I don't know who said it first so all three of you get a carb stand. Email me your address and I'll ship you a carb stand. Congratulations for being a 2 stroke genius! scottseidl1@gmail.com
Thank you!
@@tedneitzel You're welcome. Thanks for supporting the channel!
Awesome, thanks! I'll sure put that stand to use
Glad to hear it and thanks for supporting the channel!
Congratulations Too The Winners 😀😊😀👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Shop manual
Anyone get the answer?
Yes but I need to go back and see who said it first.
Bad Crank Seals Would Cause a No Fueling Issue 😀
Thats very true and probably the reason so many saws with destroyed crank bearings still have a good top end. The broken bearing pushes the seal out and now it won't restart. I realize you know this but there are a lot of new techs that follow these videos and suck up this knowledge like a sponge.
@@TheGreasyShopRag I Learn From Your Videos As Well Especially The Husqvarna Recalls And Some of The Newest Husqvarna Saws That We Don’t See That Often Yet At My Shop 😊 I Learn Something New Everyday 👍🏼
@@chrischiampo7647 I do to and when that happens I try to share it.
Was it you calling the intake insulator an intake manifold? The other thing is the you calling the recoil a "spring loaded start switch".
Lol, man I said a lot of stuff and you guys sure pay attention! See the pinned comment for the answer I was looking for...and thanks for watching!
The piston moves upwards to draw air into the cylinder You said it moves down
See my pinned comment
You said that the engine pulls fuel when the piston goes down, which is incorrect for a 2 stroke
See my pinned comment.
Plugged spark arrester usually gives me a wet cylinder and muffler and sounds funny too.
I think you can get both results depending on how plugged the screen is, if the muffler gasket is good, and how many times you pull the cord. In either case you're right about the muffled sound.
Another fantastic video Scott, thank you brother.
You're very welcome.
Got it to “pop off” or start but not run to an idle. Which later you did not test the spark plug because you got it pop off, just not run to an idle.
Everything you said is true but not the answer i'm looking for.
