Two of the cons are (kinda) incorrect.
    1) You don't have a selfie timer, but with Voice control you can turn the camera on, and say "GoPro take photo" without ever having to connect to the phone. It waits a second or two then takes a photo.
    2) You CAN import from the SD cards, but you have to use both. The cards are not redundant, but rather one for the front camera and one from the back camera. If you dump each card into a subfolder, you can then use GoPro fusion to import from those folders.
The workflows are a bit cumbersome, but hopefully that can be improved with software updates. Thanks for the great review!

    • @BenClaremont
      @BenClaremont  6 лет назад +1

Hi Ben, I agree about both things- with my funny Aussie accent I never bothered trying the voice control as I heard a lot of people had issues with it. But I’ll try again. And with the workflow, I meant you can’t import directly from card readers.. of course you can dump and import (that sounded wrong 🤣)

Bought the Mi Sphere as my first camera because of Ben's recommendation. It was $99. It fell over and busted the lens. I was not happy with myself. Anyway, the price had jumped to $199 for the same camera. I'm not sure why.
Anyway, the GoPro Fusion is now $209, so I went with it, this time, and bought the replacement plan. I will say the GoPro seems to be the better camera for, essentially, the same price. If the Mi Sphere was still half the price, I would have bought another one of them, though, because it's definitely a good camera for that price.

I've had one for about two months. I really do like the camera. It's been a bit clunky though. Sometimes the charge light stays on after I unplug it. Sometimes it won't power off. Sometimes it has card errors. It got very hot the first time I connected to my ipad. I worry that it'll cost me a photo op sometime. I'm not sure if its the firmware or if I have a clunky fusion. I'm sticking with it though because it really is great when it's working.

  • @peterager1092

Brilliant review as always. I bought the Fusion based on the comparison video you made and, while I haven't been disappointed with the decision, I have found the following. The 360 sound is really susceptible to wind noise across the top the the camera.
We really need some sort of sound shield, unless you're recording sound separate, the wind is really going to be a problem in the open. I first tried it at a local waterfall and the combination of water falling and wind gust really made the sound unusable. Yes I tried to filter in Audition, but still there were the occasional pops and the water ended up being tinny as a result. Probably best to use another mike and recorder in those situations, but still?
Also the battery life leaves a lot to be desired. Even with connect switched off. I picked up the Fusion tonight to find the battery, which was a 100% a couple of days ago, to be completely exhausted. And I mean completely. I couldn't even switch it on. It's still connected to my PC charging. With connect switched on, my first mistake, it only lasted about 24 hours on idle before needing recharging.
Still these things aside, I'm not really that disappointed with the workflow process (and thank you for covering that BTW). I have an older PC, although it was top of the line 4 years ago, the CPU is still an older version I7 with a total of 16 gig of ram and (not long ago, replaced) an Nvidia 1060 card. Still, even with a constant video of the waterfall with 5 mins of continuous footage, it wasn't that bad at importing. Even a timelapse afterwards. Still once it was in the PC and loaded in adobe, it wasn't too bad.
One last "pro-tip" I'd agree with you on the selfie that comes with it. At your recommendation, I ended up going for the Manfrotto as you suggested. However I also thought about what I could connect to it. I found a Rode Micro Boom Pro. The really do make fucking awesome gear. Alright it's sound gear and the standard is 3/8 rather than the 1/4 of a normal tripod. But this:
The micro boom pole is carbon fibre and comes in 3 sections. All up it's 2.2 metres long. Hell the cardboard box weighs more than the sections. Add one section to the Manfrotto, and it comes to waist high. Add a second section and it comes to almost eye height. Add the adaptor with the GoPro mount and you have something that position's the Fusion exactly at eye height (at least mine at 5'10"). I wouldn't use that setup for outside unless there's no wind, but inside, in a virtual tour as you suggested. Awesome! The footprint of the boom pole is less than the GoPro adaptor immediately under the Fusion.
To this a 3/8 male to 1/4 female(I got 5 from Digital Camera Warehouse in Canterbury (Sydney) for $10aud (More interested in finding the adaptors than the best price, still, they delivered in no time)) and you have a connection to the Micro Boom. Add to that a female 3/8 to 1/4 male and you have the perfect connection to the Fusion with the Gopro mount.
One last thing, I went to Bunnings and bought a bullseye level for $9. Add to that, superglue one of the 3/8 male to 1/4 female, and with the other adaptor, you have the perfect leveller for the Manfrotto tripod and the Micro Boom.
Just my two cent's worth, but thank you for the video's, I can't wait to head up to Cradle mountain and start filming with the Fusion. Oh and I'm not disappointed with the choice.

I have the VIRB360 now and I was considering ( and still considering) the Fusion before I heard your review of the Garmin. I love the VIRB360 but my computer it about 5 or 6 years old so working with it can be painful and now hearing the Fusion is worst! Wow! However hearing the photo and video is better, (resolution and dynamic range), straight-out-of-camera quality is important to me. So I am tempted to try it. I will replace my computer ( eventually) but as long as I can work the photos and videos from my phone and be happy with results I’m good. But you’re saying that’s challenging too! Hmmmmm....soooooo if I take my meds and don’t drink too much coffee, I’ll be ok? ( Sorry for the ramblings, too much coffee already. Lol.) I have my jittery finger on the buy button.

Great vid - however I disagree that connecting the camera to your Mac is the best way to transfer the files. My workflow: use a USB3 card reader and copy the video contents of both cards to the same folder on my Mac. Then run Fusion Studio, select Add Media, and select the folder. Using the camera to import a 37 second video took 1 minute (no stitching). Using the card reader it took 4 seconds per card. HUGE WIN - especially for long videos.

Hi Mic you give me hope. Can you show in one video yours Computers layout. I still have my old EEEPC laptop with 2 GB of Ram and shure i was aware about when i decide to start with 360. There is a maybee for a new laptop of max 500$ including software for the end of the year. Until than i have just to dream. Additional My husbands Acer Laptop from 2009 i think have inside a Intel 3000 grafic card that give a lot of problems with 360. For example Pano2VR5 does not run. So at least in summary I have to use Mi Max 2 as a standalone solution what works reasonable. I bought also Mi Sphere Converter recently but i do not know how to use it. I will love it if you have for the Mi a complete new workflow. Means no Mi betwhen Android and iPhone video. Thanks

This is a great review. I received this camera last week and I’ve got to say I am very pleased with the footage that it can produce. That amount of time it takes get the footage into my Mac is truly a test of patience. I did find that I could get my footage imported much faster by inserting the memory cards into card readers, and then transferring those files into one folder. It was considerably faster than having the fusion connected via the USB cable. Do you think GoPro will eventually give us the ability to download the equirectangular files to our mobile devices? I like to edit my 360 footage on Lumafusion, an iOS app.

Earlier you were rather negative about the only real competitor in my opinion: The YI 360 VR. But at least on the smartphone app front it handles editing en stitching better than the gopro. And the pc app is simple but decent too, that’s to say, if you’re working in Windows. And on a fast pc.

LIFE in 360 I couldn’t buy the Gopro because it isn’t available over here [Holland]. That’s why I ‘choose’ the YI. Thought the Pro should have far more superior software possibilities. Thank’s to your perfect review I learned it isn’t for the moment. I’m a Mac user too. Got the bundle for 2 days now testing. What I tried is using bootcamp/W10 and the YI software as kind of ‘post’ for stitching. That’s a slooooooow process on my Macbook Intel 7 with 16 G but it worked and afterwards import the files in FCP for further processing. These kind of problems have been there when we were first able to work with full HD en 4K too, so it’s just a question of time. Thank’s for all your investigations. Certainly helps!

Your videos are so much better than a year ago. Srsly, that's a quality review. You pointed out a lot of most important things. I would add - large battery and 2 sd cards prevent the overheating really well. I reached 189 minutes using Fusion with 10k mAh power bank. Powerbank juiced out, the camera had 67% left.
After I watched the Fusion video quality, it's so hard to say that Xiaomi video quality is out-dated. Fusion looks way better and sharper. Anyway, Xiaomi is a great photo beast.

Yeah, I used 5.2k. Also, I found transferring files through usb-c cable was VERY slow. I would transfer the footage to ssd/hhd first and only then bring it to the Fusion Studio. Also, don't render all videos at the same time. I worked an hour for stitching only the best part of the videos and it crashed when I pressed render, that was heartbreaking. :D

  • @drunksaru
    @drunksaru 6 лет назад

I bought mine even though I had a question which I posted in your earlier video but I guess you somewhat answered it on this video. Thanks. I got too impatient and bought the fusion. I know you do more photography than video but one of the other things that I was wondering about between the Mi sphere and fusion was how audio sounds, especially in loud environments and windy ones as well as how well it captures sound depending on how far away you are from the camera. I've been somewhat testing it out but I have nothing to compare it with. Also I can't seem to find much information from anyone regarding battery life which I think might be good info for those considering the fusion like my past self. Also I'm a total newb when it comes to video, let alone 360 stuff so I was not aware of the parallax issues common with 360's. I thought I had a defective product because all other samples looked fantastic compared to what I saw directly through the camera. I do thank the tech Gods for D.Warp but is there anything better for video and photos? Thanks for the great videos.

Have you downloaded the newest version of Fusion studio released 2-7-2018? Hi Ben, thank you for the in-depth video. I had a question...Im about the pull the trigger on this, but, before I do, would you say its pretty future-proofed (as much as it can be of course), or do you think something better may be on the horizon within the next couple months? I realise you dont have a crystal ball, but hopefully you know what I mean.
Its quite pricy and im happy to pay the money for a good piece of kit - so I guess do you think this is a good buy for the foreseeable future?
When I was looking at 360's in 2016, they were pretty shite with Kodak practically gluing a bunch of cameras onto a stick!!!

Hi Alison, the 360 camera industry is moving lightning fast! Cameras from 2 years ago are no longer able to compete, and I see that trend continuing. However the Fusion will definitely be solid for a good year, and longer than most 360 cameras of 2018 👍

Thanks Ben. Yep, very keen for the fusion. Lack of overcapture on android is a pain though, and the Rylo software seems much better for converting to regular videos. If only its footage looked like the fusion's! Quick question: With the cheap cost of the Essential Phone and 360 cam, would you suggest it for getting into 360 photography? Stabilisation looks horrendous, which is why I'm thinking photography rather than video. Would love to see you do a comparison of the Essential 360 and other options. Cheers mate!

Great video and channel. You do an awesome job. I bought the Fusion a couple of days ago and love it. It seems like the most recent firmware update to the iOS GoPro app has made processing the Fusion files much easier and more stable. I’ve been using the iPhone 10sMax and new IPad Pro which have very strong processors which may be part of the reason.
My MacBook Pro is a little older (2016) so I’m thinking I may have some trouble with editing on the PC.

Yeah I saw that- still though it relies on your finger dexterity instead of sliders, and it’s much more difficult to drag around than apps like Theta+

Also, requires you to react to the footage in real-time - or know where you're going to be panning to in advance - would definitely prefer keyframes like Rylo's app.

Hi Ben! Firstly wanted to say awesome video and you have a great channel, can see all the hard work you are putting in and hard to miss the high quality content. Just had a question for you...
I’m considering between the virb 360 and fusion for capturing 360 video specifically. What would you recommend? Which would be easier to use? I’m trying to shoot videos that give a first person feel to it (like a first person shooter game). What’s your thoughts? This would be my first purchase of a 360 video camera. Thanks

Hi Ben. Excellent video again. I have a question about photo timelapse. I was taking some photos a few days ago, but I wasn't able to import the stitched photos alone. GoPro Fusion Studio stacks the time-lapse photos, which is reasonable ok, but then it only allows you to import them as a video-timelapse. Any suggestion about this? Am I overlooking something obvious? Thanks and congrats for your channel, pretty handy for the community

A major Fusion drawback for me is that it doesn't stream. I notice that in your reviews, you tend to not consider this feature, and I wonder why - is streaming still too glitchy to consider it as a major feature?

Well, maybe when I can afford an new desktop that will handle the GoPro Fusion. I have the insta360 one - which I don't particularly like because some of the videos were so pixelated that they aren't viewable Why that happens I don't know because some are okay. I also have 2 xiaomi Mi Spheres which I loved except both have a cracked lens (you'd think I would have learned my lesson!) So, now I'm thinking I'll either get a ThetaV or maybe another Xiaomi Mi Sphere. I was wondering if Xiaomi could replace the lens of one camera with one the lens of the other?

LIFE in 360 Tech 4x4 I think. Based of the many reviews I've seen on RUclips. For better a workflow, I think it will be better to use it for recording 20-30 clips at a time. Also, it's the CPU power and speed of the harddrive (I plan on using the 1GD Samsung T5 SSD to render and edit from 460 mb/s write and read speeds over USB-C) and depends less of the GPU that makes most. My fusion will arrive Monday

IE... pre production and post production.. can it do live streaming, or post to FB, how long it takes to import a file thats 5min long... . i see alot of video on how GoPro Fusion is great camera but not how long it take for post production. to be honest i feel people who push Fusion "Good review" and not show pre and post production leave out the user end experiance. also feel like you a major con is the post production time.

Really? My smartphone (Samsung J5 2017) works with many other Android compatible cameras (including Gopro Hero) and I don't like to run and buy the last phone because of Gopro delay updating the app. We would talk about spending a lot of money more. I have successfully downloaded the 360 video files from the Fusion camera to my iPhone using the GoPro App. Then using OverCapture, I saved from the 360 video a 360 spherical photo. However, the new 360 photo is not saved to the iPhone Camera Roll. (I can see the new 360 photo has been saved in the GoPro App Library.) Any ideas how to transfer the new photo to my computer for further editing in Photoshop/Lightroom?
