    Hello Andy, Thanks for the informative video on the Omega SpeedMaster Professional. I purchased my Omega SpeedMaster Professional Mk II, Movement 29637379, Ref. ST145 014 L on the 16th April 1971 in Canterbury, Kent. I am wondering, given your detailed knowlege, if you could give me some insight into the Mk II as I seldom hear anything about that particular model. It certainly comes across as pehaps an inferior model to the original. I would most welcome your personal views on the MkII if you are willing to share your opinion and knowledge with me. In anticipation I thank you greatly. William

      Wow. I’d have been a mere 2 months old then. What made you go for the mark 2 if you can remember?
      The mark 2 is the black sheep of the Speedmaster range, and is a curiosity. The case shape is very classic to the age it came out and I’m sure your example has taken on some patina along the way as they do.
      I haven’t tried on an original, but have tried the recent re-edition. I find this watch to be handsome, but almost hockey puck thick for reasons best known to Omega. How thick is your 50 year old version? I imagine about the same as a regular Speedmaster.
      There’s some great info to be found in the link.
      chronomaddox.com/omega/articles/mark_series/MarkSeries.html
      Thanks for enjoying the video. You have inspired me to write an edition for the Mark 2.
      Andy.

    The stepped dial is stunning in person, and in my view transforms the watch. The bracelet is solid and fits nicely with the taper, the clasp seems to have struck the right balance between durability and appeal- I think 20 years down the line this will look much better than a dented flat link bracelet. Hard to convey the changes until you've seen the watch in person, but it's certainly surprised me how much of a step up the overall package is when you add up all the incremental improvements

    What a fantastic history of the Speedmaster Professional. It should really be called “The definitive Guide” I’ve been looking for something this comprehensive for some time. Many thanks for taking the effort to research it. I’ve owned a ref 3570.50.00 1861 calibre since 2007 and I still absolutely love it. The new 3861 looks great but I’ll be staying with my 1861 which is becoming a vintage of its own!

    Another great job, Andy. I loved this history portion. I've seen many YT videos on the history of the Speedy, ever since I decided to buy one. Yours was very enjoyable and I particularly liked the side-by-side-by-side-etc images. It made me love my Speedy even more.
    Many, many, many years ago I was in the U.S. Army. I noticed that Speedys were popular with our helicopter pilots. At first, I thought it was because it were expensive (even way back then). Pilots were warrant officers and made more money than poor enlisted guys like myself. But, it was more than that. First, it was a darn good watch. Second, it could be swapped for a NATO strap, which a lot of them liked to do. Third, the contrasting dial made it easy to read. The NASA heritage also was a reason. Finally, it looked so cool.
    Although the prices at the Post Exchange were lower than retail stores (and no sales tax), there were still crazy expensive. I wanted one, but I literally could not afford one. Eventually, it fell off of my radar screen. Finally, in 2020 I snagged one at nearly triple the price. Sheesh. I have no regrets; because it is just as brilliant today at it was many decades ago. It might even be my Exit Watch. Bravo, Andy.

The speedy with its new tapered bracelet and 15mm clasp looks and is Omegas flagship piece and will compliment my Submariner 41mm date.

    My father recently passed away and I inherited his vintage Omega Speedmaster Professional. My father has not had it serviced for a very long time and yet it still works and keeps good time. It has seen the wars and not in the best of condition. The original strap also long gone. My question is, how can I date this watch? The caseback is very plain with a light engraving of a horse like creature with "Speedmaster" above and Omega symbol underneath.

    • @TheEnglishWatch
      @TheEnglishWatch  3 года назад +1

      Sorry to hear about your father. Not a great club to be in, but you'll have the watch to cherish in his memory. In terms of dating, sounds like a pre-moon version, so pre-1969 when they started to put First Watch Worn on the Moon on the back (my video has a dating chart towards the end that may be of help). If it doesn't have that, it could be quite collectible (polished back with hippocampus in the centre), so be careful with it. There are a few good watchmakers out there, although I haven't tried any. Watches of Lancashire look a pretty good outfit as do David Carpenter Watches. Best thing to do is call them and explain the situation. Don't forget to send me some pictures by email though....I don't service, but am curious. Make sure you don't have the dial, and hands replaced.

You have given me so much insight, but I will take photographs and email to you and then we can discuss further there, as I am also curios. I have not tried to restore as I do with most of my vintage digital watches apart from polishing out deep scratches on acrylic. I will email you momentarily.

    BEWARE, OMEGA PRODUCTION ERROR - All Speedmasters with cal.1861 or cal.1863 movement (manual wound) paired with 5th of a second markers on dial (seconds divided into 5 parts) or paired with 4th of a second markers, and all with cal.3220 movement (automatic) paired with 5th-second markers on dial, have INACCURATE READING of the chronograph hand due to NO FIT between dial-markers of fractions-of-a-second and the movement’s beat-frequency per second. Cal.1861/1863 beat at 6 vibrations per second (6VPS) and require a 3rd or 6th of a second per marker between the seconds; the cal.3220 beats at 8 VPS and require a half or a 4th or 8th of a second between the markers.
    This affects Speedmasters with reference no. 311.10.39.30; 311.33.42.30; 311.30.42.30.01; 3590.50; 3572.50 et cetera (if they have 5th of a second markers paired with a 6 BPS movement - cal.1861 or 1863); 311.30.42.30.03 (a 4th of a second per marker); and it affects Speedmasters with ref. no. 3510.50; 3510.12; 3520.50; 2598.80 etc. (if they have 5th of a second markers, i.e. each second divided into 5 fractions of a second, paired with a 6 beats per second movement - cal.3220 or 1151 etc.).
    Incidentally, those with ref. no. 311.32.40.30.01.005; 311.30.42.30.01.004; 311.33.40.30.02.001; percent 311.32.42.30.04.003; 522.30.42.30.04.001 (cal.1861); 311.30.42.30.99.002 (cal.1863); 3876.50.31 (cal.1866) that have a 1/3 of a second per marker (each second divided into 3 parts, i.e. 2 sub-markers between each marker of a full second), are correct.
    Even Tudor had the same production error/design flaw, on all their Valj.-based 28,800 BPH (8 BPS) movement equipped Heritage chronographs, having 4 dividers between each full second marker, making it a 5th of a second per marker, with a CHRONO-hand that jerks forward 6 times per second and always miss the first and the third quarter-second-marker). Only now do we see it corrected. And only now have we recently seen Omega NOT cheating in this regard, more than 50 years after they stopped making their 18,000 BPH (5 BPS) movement, cal.321. They even cheated NASA, in the 1960s, equipping the astronauts with a 6 jerks per second chronograph hand over a dial with only 5 fraction-of-a-second markers. How lame and criminal isn’t that ?
    Even their so-called 1957 reissue has a 21,600 BPH (6 BPS) movement paired with each second divided into 5 fractions on the dial. Right, a CURRENTLY ONGOING mass sale of factory error/design flaw equipped CRAP, useless for what it is marketed as, a precision instrument for accurate split second timing. Criminal.

      Blimey. Good job Omega have now fixed it. At least we now have digital stop watches. I’m not sure most wrist watch buyers needed that level of accuracy to boil an egg, but like you say, they are sold as precision instruments.

    I have heard that this new model has overly sharp edges. I have no evidence for this other than other reports and vlogs but its worth mentioning as this seems to be a consisitent criticism from owneres according to the interweb? Any owners of the new variant please feed back. I love this watch and I am seriously thinking of buying one once funds permit

    Hi…..have there been 1971 moonwatches with medallion casebacks and non stepped dials?

    • @TheEnglishWatch
      @TheEnglishWatch  7 месяцев назад

      1971 may have had some crossover between stepped and non-stepped. The case back could be straight writhing or the modern medallion version with writing round the edge. The movement would be an 861 calibre.

    When was the 3570.50 moonwatch model introduced and ended? What are your thoughts on it?

    • @TheEnglishWatch
      @TheEnglishWatch  3 года назад

      The 3570.50 was a transitional model from 1996, ending the use of the 861 movement and tritium. The reference here would be ST 345.0022. In 1997 the 3570.50 started using super luminova and was fitted with the 1861 rhodium plated movement and went on to be the watch replaced in January this year with just a bracelet update. Is yours tritium or luminova? I think a 1997 model with tritium would be cool as I got marriage that year.

      @Stewwwwww 3 года назад

      @@TheEnglishWatch brilliant, do you have a list of the reference model for the Speedmaster professionals?
      I can’t find them anywhere. Is the 3570.50 a good version to buy?

    • @TheEnglishWatch
      @TheEnglishWatch  3 года назад +1

      There are so many references for this watch. Given its age, you could go crazy. The 3570.50 is a good version as it’s the last of the 861 and Tritium. So this one and a big box previous gen with the 1861 movement, maybe one of the special editions. Early models like an St105.012 that went to the moon are quite expensive, but they are out there.
      Best thing to do if you’re very serious is buy the Moonwatch Only book. There’s a link in the description of the video. It’s got all you need and costs no more than a good leather strap.

    Just a quick question what do you think of the Omega Speedmaster moonwatch you have on a person with a small wrist?. Is the bracelet to Chunky, thanks.

    • @TheEnglishWatch
      @TheEnglishWatch  3 года назад +1

      I guess it depends on how small. On a strap the Speedy is pretty wearable. Looks like the new bracelet helps being shorter across the case also. Seek one out and give it a go. The First Omega in Space is an alternative.

    Word from multiple reliable sources, including some RUclips broadcasters, report the finishing on the bracelet and the case is poor and feels cheap. Interesting if others have had the same experience.

    • @TheEnglishWatch

      I guess we need to see if these pieces were pre-production. I’d like to think Omega are better than that, but sometimes these things are rushed. The best feedback will be from the buying public. It’s going to be some time before I’m able to get my hands on one.

      Personally found it ok, and the new bracelet is stunning in person, especially with the brushed hesalite version. The incremental improvements of the stepped dial and bracelet design have transformed the overall appeal of the watch. I wouldn't call it perfect, but it's a solid package. I think this really doesn't come across well in photos- which all seem overexposed, leaving the improvements to the hard to spot on screen.

  • @Rick-uu4sj
    @Rick-uu4sj 3 года назад

    The new speedmaster moonwatches are crap- The fit and finish of the polishing of the case and bracelet is reminiscent of cheap replicas. I have visited 3 different AD's and tried on all different variations, with the same result. The edges of the bracelet, and the case in particular, are sharp enough to cut deep into the skin, when moderate pressure is applied. Omega forums on social media, are alos reporting the same.....Back to the drawing board.

    • @TheEnglishWatch
      @TheEnglishWatch  3 года назад

      That’s a shame, and unfortunate I’m unable to find out myself. I’m sure Omega won’t want this hanging over their most iconic watch. Let’s see what they ‘quietly’ do. Suspect there may be some returns on the back of the chatter that I’m sure they’ll want to put right.
