Gah, I'm mad that I forgot to mention one of my favorite bits! The dream Mario I've had in my head for years now has always been called "Super Mario Adventure." This game doesn't match it exactly, as I like to dream about visiting towns with NPC's and getting items and new abilities and all that, but the fact that we're now getting a game called "Odyssey" is awesome. The word means basically the same thing.
Ikr Arlo just can't keep his eyes still...and he blinks so much I'm concerned that he has something stuck in his eye...maybe it's tears from seeing the Mario odyssey trailer.😄
To answer a common question, I do mean Pikmin 3, not 4. Pikmin 3 is one of the games "of the last six years" I've been really excited about. 4 will likely join the list once we get an official trailer.
Arlo what about splatoon 2 you should make a video about that game because I'm really hyped about that game because no one on the Internet seems to really be talking about it
My dream game is called "New Super Mario Land". In the game, Wario and Waluigi (that's right. Waluigi!) Kidnap Peach and Daisy. Mario would pursue Wario and travel around in the Mushroom Kingdom. Luigi, however, would travel to Sarasaland. What do you think?
It's actually kinda fascinating to consider that the Wii's lack of a second analog stick was a contributing factor for why the Galaxy game's were more linear. I'm totally in the same boat with wanting the levels to be hidden like how they were in 64 and Sunshine. There was nothing more satisfying than finding a new level by accident. Moving forward, I refuse to watch any additional trailers. I want this experience to be as spoiler free as possible. I get why they showed off so many worlds already, but part of me wants to go into Odyssey with no clue what to expect, because that's exactly how things were when I first played 64 and Sunshine almost two decades ago.
I think I'm going to go spoiler-free on this one too! Every time I accidentally GLANCE at a Breath of the Wild trailer something awesome gets spoiled, so I don't want to see all the wacky stuff in Odyssey before I can even play it.
Arlo Yeah I stopped watching the Zelda stuff too. I'm kinda boycotting trailers in general now (aside from the initial reveals). Regardless what you think of Color Splash, I was actually pretty mad how much the trailers spoiled. Some content did end up being a surprise to me, but geez, they were showing off end game footage in those things. I get the point of showcasing versatility, and unique gameplay, but still they need to draw the line somewhere. Most modern trailers are way to spoiler-heavy. The same issue is happening with movies.
What? Do you mean you can't avoid the temptation of watching trailers? While it is tempting to indulge in all the material that's out there for an unreleased product, I ultimately know I'll enjoy the released content more if its unspoiled. So to me, it doesn't take that much strength to be honest. I'm just doing myself a favor.

mario and woody super Mario sun shines: all around me are familiar faces worn out places worn facessssss But personal I do think sunshine is better than 64
Stars, not mini stars, is the only thing that can make me buy a mario party. None of that gimmicky bullcrap. Unadulterated nostalgic mario party. Haven't played one in 15 years because they've all been crap.
5:07 People find Mario, An Italian-American plumber from New York City, being in New York City to be weird. But no one was thrown off by blatant Robots, in Zelda: Breath of the Wild, a Medieval inspired Fantasy series.
Generic Username well it was always stated that the ancients like the sheikah had very advanced technology remember skyward swords desert area where there were robots there and hovering carts
Mario Odyssey just went from looking like a pretty awesome new Mario game to looking like THE ABSOLUTE GREATEST MARIO GAME OF ALL TIME WITHOUT QUESTION
that would be neat if they had it with some kind of mini game between worlds you could complete(optionally of course) that added something extra to the game.
You know what? With Galaxy 2's world map activating when you get to the wheel of Mario's head-ship, I haven't even considered actually flying the new airship. That sounds cool!
I'm pretty excited about this one as it seems like a bit of an homage to the original Super Mario Land games, particularly the first two. Hear me out - 3D World had a lot of Super Mario 2 in it: four playable characters with the same abilities as before, angels, pulling up veggies with Captain Toad; 3D Land referenced Mario 3, mostly through tanooki leaves and air ships; and NSMB Wii U took elements from Mario World with its cape mechanic, koopalings, and interconnected world map. With Oddyssey, we have desert sphinxes and a world- traveling (space)ship from the first Mario Land, and "zones" that look straight from Mario Land 2 such as a giant Tree (Tree Zone) and an area full of giant food (Macro Zone). I'd be on the lookout at E3 for even more references, such as a mechanical area, a level inside of a whale, a ghost area, and maybe a space zone. Man, how cool would it be to find Tatanga as a boss of the space zone?
Jarrod Chlapowski you might be on to something. They might even include it somewhere. Super Mario Land 2 is the most underrated (by the people who never played it) Mario game ever. It's still to this day one of the most interesting and creative Mario games ever. Technically very advanced for the hardware it was on as well.
why do people act like linearity is such a horrible thing? the galaxy duo were absolutely the creative opus of nintendo and they worked on a very linear progression mode. 3D land/world also worked quite well with linearity and I simply can't see how these four games would even benefit from all this open world, sandbox mania
the most below average gaming channel he means what 06 would have been if it was polished and finished, a good departure for a series that is great and sets a new standard for the series’ quality for years to come. Its a huge compliment
Even after poor sales and a ton of hate from fans, Intelligent Systems seem to insist on not using the original combat system and adding no original characters.
I really think it's awesome Nintendo acknowledged the different kinds of Mario games. The little things you mentioned near the start of this video make me VERY hyped. I'll probably spend a long time standing at high places in game, looking at the beautiful view and fog in the distance, and skydiving from high places. A slightly random detail you missed: Mario looks at interesting things near him.
Yeah paper mario is still dead...mario odyssey has way more creativity in it and it's a platformer lol pm use to be the most creative mario series...but not anymore
They said they won't return the battle system of both 64 and TTYD and they won't bring back the original characters either........ unless TTYD gets remastered
Hey Arlo, you probably won't ever read this but, I just wanted to say your videos have really helped me. Now I don't have some sort of grand, dramatic, story. Your content has just been there for me. I've been really stressed lately not only under the pressure of schooling but added on the pressure I get from music. Right now I'm working my way into getting into Jacobs School of Music which basically is a really good music school. My audition for the school has been creeping up on me and the expectations are only getting higher and higher. But your videos have helped me relax. It's nice remembering the times I could just sit there and play video games for hours and you help me recapture that and reinvent that with your content. So I just wanted to say thanks, for what you do and what your for. It's different, relatable, and I like it. Keep up the good work Arlo.
The idea of the bunnies in the game really caught my attention for some reason and I wasn't sure why until I realized the game is based around hats, and what do magicians pull out of their hats?
Fuck off memory man. You're one of the core reasons people hate Daisy. Haven't you got anything better to do in life than be a lapdog to a useless inanimate entity which is all fantastical?
I didn't know any of this. I saw some promotional images of this game and assumed it was just Mario 3D world Switch Edition. But after hearing all this stuff about it being more like 64 and Sunshine, let the hype commence.
You are genuinely funny, interesting, and creative. I love that you use that puppet. It makes you so original. You just earned a subscriber. Keep doing your thing and good luck in your future.
Still buying it on the Wii U. I will wait for Xenoblade 2 to get the Switch. I want to buy 2-3 great games at once. Also, I need to save up the money for it.
Yami You'd be able to play it on a go, though, not to mention more games are going to come out anyways and Wii U has officially been discontinued, meaning sticking with it will become pretty pointless.
As much as I loved oddessey, and I still think it is the best Mario game, my personal favorite are the two galaxy games. Mainly cause I grew up on a WII and I cry because they remind me of my childhood.
From what we've seen, this game really reminds me of banjo kazooie. You've got moons instead of stars that you collect without leaving the level each time, big sandbox style levels, and a crap ton of different moves that you can do. Will this be the banjo threeie we've always dreamed of?
So, if we're getting a Mario game like this, does that mean there's hope for a Paper Mario games that really turns some heads? _Color Splash_ was close, but it didn't win the cigar.
E-ManAnimates Honestly, for me as long as Wario,Daisy, Wart and other neglected characters make the cut and that they use an intuitive battle system, I'll be fine.
Lol I love the references to the good old paper marios and how sticker star/colour splash get acknowledged for being horrible and are just there to be insulted hehe it makes me laugh so much😄 keep up the great work Arlo!!!
I want to see a Super Mario Sunshine level, maybe the hub world Delfino Plaza. The boss could be Bowser Jr. with his paintbrush, or maybe Petey Piranha. How about a level from Super Mario 64 as well? I'm not sure which one, though... Just thought of this while making this comment. A Paper Mario: TTYD level made to look more 3D but there could be special things to do or special mushrooms in that world which would allow you to act more like paper, or maybe the battling system in that world could be turn based? Make the boss Hooktail! Mario lost his hat this level and got Koops in place of it. So Mario would get Goombella and Koops to help him through the level! Goombella could guide him through the level like Marie and Callie guided Inkling, and Koops would act as Mario's hat would normally in this game! All the while Goombella and Koops could be making references to TTYD. Here's one that I know will get a lot of love: a Mario level set in the Breath of the Wild. The boss could be Stone Talus or that laser zappy thing depending on how you play the miniature story line for that level. Maybe one of the first 5 enemies Mario would fight from that world would drop a sword and if you take that sword then you fight the laser dude and if you don't you fight Stone Talus. Give me some love people! *_FEED ME LIKES!!!_*
Nothing hit home closer than your statement of "the older I get the less often companies reveal games that I'm just like 'I NEED THAT'". We share the same outlook for this. It's nice to feel giddy about a game again. Thanks for articulating this feeling Arlo!
Master RBG it seems like the switch is literally shifting away from linear games in general, like with all of their titles I feel as if they won't be linear in any way shape or form
I am watching this video right now just to make me even more hyped for the game!!! By the way, you are a fantastic channel Arlo and I pretty much bought a switch because of you.
Yo man I had kind of lost faith in the last several years. Everywhere I looked, people seemed to prefer linear Mario and I really just didn't understand it at all. Maybe you had to be just the right age when Mario 64 came out to realize it was the best one or... or something. I am really just not sure. But my endless amount of stoke for this one is palpable.
Kevin Thompson when you mastered super mario world and then take mario 64 you feel it is boring and pointless, the only people who likes mario 64 style is the people who was born between 1990-1997 or people who never touch the snes before mario64
I feel the biggest problem with open world games in general is it becomes less and less cohesive the bigger and bigger you try to make them. It forces players to make their own objectives. It isn't a bad thing in itself but it really can make players lose focus. I enjoy GTA but I've only ever actually beaten GTA Vice City because it's too easy to get distracted and not care about the game itself while you dick around. Mario games in an open world setting though has always felt a bit weird. 64 is one of those games I do remember loving as a kid but I struggle to enjoy it today. Controls are kinda sloppy and level designs can be super frustrating at times. But the game isn't even 'open world'. If you're at a hub world and are going into portals to go to different levels...it isn't open world. It's just a non-linear experience. Mario 64 also isn't nearly as grand in scale as many try to make it out to be. It had a decent variety of locations but it padded the game experience by making you revisit the same exact level almost a dozen times each to get the stars. The game felt more like a grind than an actual adventure... Which is what the linear games tend to accomplish more successfully. Linear games also allow for a more consistent experience each and every time. Enemy placement is easier and more complex a lot of the time, item distribution is thought out, bosses tend to be more interesting and less annoying if you're not 'geared up' proper (Doesn't happen much in Mario, obviously but is a common open world problem in other games). Like...enemy placements in 64 and Sunshine felt really uninspired. You rarely had to engage with anything, which made the game feel way too easy and the stakes way too low.
While having a world map is technically the easier way of moving between levels, we can't actually say that it's superior. A hub world where the levels are hidden and spead apart can actually be thought of as a level itself. But, the level is more taylored to exploration and problem solving than the other levels which will always have a main goal or objective. Hub worlds are often dynamic, growing and changing as the character progresses, keeping the spirit of exploration alive to the very end of the game. A world map and a hub world are not comparable because they taylor to two different types of players, those who prefer a linear and more direct experience and those who prefer a longer and more personalized experience. For Odyssey, it appears that they are focusing on the latter. One thing that they might even be doing is having multiple hub worlds that can be accessed by the airship with levels themed to the area. Anyway, I too am hopeful for a Mario experience closer to 3D World and Sunshine.
Whats interesting to me is that it seems almost like a mix of multiple 3D mario games. Like in sunshine with F.L.U.D.D (which i'm personally hoping will be in this game if only for a level) the hat gives new platforming opportunities. The hub world idea from both sunshine and 64. The super varied levels from games like Mario Galaxy. Im really excited for it but I was kind of hoping for a more cohesive world like in sunshine where all the levels besides the secret ones felt like part of the same world and story
I think this has hints of Banjo Kazooie in it. Nintendo always had "theme" worlds, but they were pretty broad and vague themes. Now it looks like they're finally getting more specific with those themes. Environmental themes are being given more significance in gameplay, you bounce off the hood of a car and swing on a lamp in New York, and then you jump off an umbrella in the desert world. The incredibly fast lion mount in Egypt also sounds more like a Banjo Kazooie type transformation than anything we've seen in a Mario game before. Lets hope they also go as far as mixing characters and abilities between environments like Banjo did. I guess ultimately those concepts are more rooted in Metroid game design, but it would be great to make players think of applying everything they have in their toolbox across the whole breadth of the game.
i'm from the future and Super Mario Odyssey is as awesome as we though it would be. For real though, this is a great video and it's interesting seeing how we thought at that time. The Cap would later end up getting the Capture Ability (which no one saw coming), we didn't get a hud world but instead a world map with some interactions between the Kingdoms and the game was released in October and not November. Also, finally the regular Arlo outro, which I think is new here!
Super Mario Odyssey and Zelda Breath of the Wild really look like they could be the best games of their franchises, if Nintendo could pull something like that off it would be huuuuuge
This could be true. If Breath of the Wild receives a wicked high score from gaming sites all around, interest in the system could skyrocket. Who would want to miss a game scoring perfect 10's everywhere?
Jacopo Barberis It's because they didn't have third party support. Also Sunshine and Waker aren't on the same level as OOT and Mario 64 The SNES had a good Mario and Zelda, and it's considered the best Nintendo console of all time by a large margin. Sold 50 mil too.
Yooka- It's because they want to cash in on the Hentai appeal for the loser fanboys who will never get into a relationship because they're too busy being delusional and fantasizing about their "waifus". I mean seriously that fad is so stupid and people need to grow up. Rosalina is a terrible eye candy character with no personality and a very lame uninspired unoriginal backstory who has no business being in any Mario game besides the Galaxy series. But of course they put her in everything because as I said before she's eye candy.
grant Yeah, She's a pretty awful "character". She really does have no business being in anything except Galaxy and maybe the Party and Sports games. Meanwhile, we can't even get Wario to be playable in a Main Series game since Mario 64 DS!(I think)
10:00 it would be disapointing if it was just a world map, oh boy have i got good news for you (6 months later) i dont even feel like the world map is a world map
So one day I went to Taco Bell. I went into the bathroom, but I fell in the toilet. Then I got teleported to a weird lava castle place with crap monsters.
yeah compare 3D world to Sunshine, which had almost ALL original enemies. The only reused enemy I can think of is Petey Piranha. Even the turtle enemies in the game were not koopas.
I think we might not have to worry about selecting areas from a list, if you look at around 10:19 to the right there is a Bowser flag. This might not seem like much, but the airship has a Mario flag, meaning they could lead you to a world specific to that flag, or worst case scenario just summon the ship to select an area from a list.
I'm a new subscriber but I have to say the way your videos are written and produced and acted. I appreciate the time put in to every video and the way you convey your thoughts in such an eloquent way. Really fantastic. Can't wait for the videos to come
I wouldn't classify the Galaxy games as "full" linear; they're kinda in between 64 and 3D world, mostly linear but with a few bonus stars hidden in most levels. They're my favorite becasue they balance the platforming challenges with a bit of exploration to keep things fresh. 3D world didn't do that at all, and I really didn't like it for that reason. 64 was too open ended for me, but I'd gladly take it over the Wii U game.
Yeah, I never thought that Mario Galaxy was too linear. Just a few of the smaller levels and the fact that there was a really small hub-world. Levels like the Beach Bowl and Honey Hive Galaxies are certainly non-linear in my book.
Two games is not "what the series used to be" just because you grew up on it. From my point of view of someone raised on SMB3, the period between 64 and Galaxy 2/3D Land was a looooong wait for the kind of 3D Mario game I actually dreamed of back in the day.
I agree with the Galaxy Games, those 2 titles wiped the floor with the other 3D marios, and linear is not a limit for those 2. In the case of 3d land and 3d world eh.....i agree with Arlo. They are fun but imo they are a step back! 64, Galaxy and the others felt like an adventure! Those 2 felt like 3d mario in 2d mario mode.
Arlo, I am a weird hybrid. I adore Mario Galaxy to the point of sddiction yet I hate the 3D Land/World games with all my guts. SM64 is great but not as amazing as SMG and Sunshine was meh. Yes, we people exist, too!
As for the image Nintendo released, I think it is wrong. SM Galaxy has plenty of exploration. There are many big planets and they are even bigger than SM64's. And as for the smaller ones, SM64 had stages like the clock, Bowser's castles, the underwater stages, the stages in where you fly, etc.... So I would put the Galaxy games down with the SM64 and Sunshine.
I'm more in the other camp, I like Mario games to be more linear with stages that have secrets, alternate routes, or warp zones. Mario 64 was good when it came out but I'm not nostalgic for it or the N64 in general. I grew up with the NES and my favorite was always "Doki Doki Panic" Super Mario 2. That's a format that I've been dying for them to revisit for ages. I really enjoyed Super Mario 3D World and loved how it touched on a lot of nuances from Mario 2. I mean I really am looking forward to Odyssey but I hope they do another 3D World too.
Hey Arlo, I just started using my RUclips account entirely to start supporting your channel after discovering it. I just wanted to say, as soon as I saw this game and got over how excited I was for it, I immediately thought of you and how you must be feeling. I was jumping up and down thinking about how this one thing you've lamented about not ever getting again, was now officially a thing coming to this new awesome console. You're my favorite RUclipsr, and we seem to think exactly the same way about games (I often watch your new videos and shout, "I SAID THESE EXACT WORDS YESTERDAY!" Not even kidding lol. Anyway, just wanted to say I'm a huge fan, I'm glad you and I are both getting this game soon, and I hope you keep posting videos. :)
awww yeah, tell em arlo. this game is gonna be the ultimate jam

Does this mean you'll make another real-talk playthrough like you did with Mario 64? A new gen of Dunkey!

I was pretty thrown off by the guardians, thats why I didn't like the look of BoTW at first, now I want it really bad tho
The robots still fit the fantasy style of Zelda, while realistic humans don't really fit into the Mario universe naturally.
Out-of-place technology in Zelda has been a thing since Link to the Past, try to keep up.

Mario cant go to San Francisco that's where Sonic lives

No, it really is Central City. There's also Station Square, but the one based on San Francisco is Central City.

Yeah, that's a place too, but he only got there in Sonic Unleashed. It's also based on New York, not San Francisco.
11:37-12:12 is exactly my review of this game.
Mario Odyssey just went from looking like a pretty awesome new Mario game to looking like THE ABSOLUTE GREATEST MARIO GAME OF ALL TIME WITHOUT QUESTION
I'm gonna call it now - the city is just one of the levels, and the ship is just an animation of you transitioning to a level after choosing it.
Clint Hobson I think the city will be a world with multiple levels for it like in SM galaxy, and the desert will be another one, etc

What if you could actually fly Mario's airship? that would be cool
I'm kinda disappointed that they didn't make him fly in the Sky Pop...
Wait, you don't remember the Sky Pop either do you?
That'd be straight up Final Fantasy 6! I'd have no objection to this!
ZoruaBoy98 I do
that would be neat if they had it with some kind of mini game between worlds you could complete(optionally of course) that added something extra to the game.
You kind of called the space area, nice one
Woah... I always thought Super Mario Galaxy was in the same line of games as Super Mario 64 and Super Mario SS
dutch menneer yeah same! they disguised it pretty well i guess.
Same...they are definitely an outlier

Nah man... you can't find secret levels in the hub world, do the stars out of order, or use camera control
why do people act like linearity is such a horrible thing?
the galaxy duo were absolutely the creative opus of nintendo and they worked on a very linear progression mode.
3D land/world also worked quite well with linearity and I simply can't see how these four games would even benefit from all this open world, sandbox mania

Why do I still watch this video 4 years later? Two words: "stturrrrrg flabadoobada!"
E-ManAnimates
Honestly, for me as long as Wario,Daisy, Wart and other neglected characters make the cut and that they use an intuitive battle system, I'll be fine.
To me colour splash was really really far...zero plot or characters and gimmicky battles for some examples makes colour splash awful to me lol
Hope so.
No because nintendo has said the mario and luigi series is the true mario rpg. Paper mario is experimental guys.
Lol I love the references to the good old paper marios and how sticker star/colour splash get acknowledged for being horrible and are just there to be insulted hehe it makes me laugh so much😄 keep up the great work Arlo!!!

I am 99.99999999999% sure that Phhhhhewterrthrebadubada (Super Mario Odyssey) is going to be the best Mario game ever

Or, you were a kid when Mario 64 came out, and think that it's the best from just nostalgia
What? I grew up playing NES and SNES. Mario 64 is the best Mario ever made, and I absolutely love Super Mario World(SNES).
I think the Galaxy games are the best but I generally prefer open-ended Mario over linear Mario.
Arlo, getting his Mario Odyssey analysis out before GameXplain
I played the early demo for it and it's just purely amazing. You can't get enough trust me. It's amazing.
Arlo i really hope you reach one million in the lifespan of your channel. Your videos are fantastic and always get me excited for games.

Yeah, it does kind of seem like a crazy mishmash, doesn't it?
This video is 2 years old now HOLD UP

i'm from the future and Super Mario Odyssey is as awesome as we though it would be.
For real though, this is a great video and it's interesting seeing how we thought at that time. The Cap would later end up getting the Capture Ability (which no one saw coming), we didn't get a hud world but instead a world map with some interactions between the Kingdoms and the game was released in October and not November.
Also, finally the regular Arlo outro, which I think is new here!
as a game designer, I can tell you that open games are way more easy to make then linear ones
Super Mario Odyssey and Zelda Breath of the Wild really look like they could be the best games of their franchises, if Nintendo could pull something like that off it would be huuuuuge
Jacopo Barberis Like OOT and Mario 64 on the 64 at the time. It's a trend for good Marios and Zelda games to release simultaneously on a system.
Sayr
The Wind Waker and Mario Sunshine as well. And you know what's even funnier? Both the 64 and Gamecube flopped.
FUCK
This could be true. If Breath of the Wild receives a wicked high score from gaming sites all around, interest in the system could skyrocket. Who would want to miss a game scoring perfect 10's everywhere?
Jacopo Barberis It's because they didn't have third party support. Also Sunshine and Waker aren't on the same level as OOT and Mario 64
The SNES had a good Mario and Zelda, and it's considered the best Nintendo console of all time by a large margin. Sold 50 mil too.

grant I hope they don't shoehorn her in somehow.
Yooka- I know right?
grant It's like they feel the need to put her in anything Mario related
Meanwhile, we can't even get Wario to be playable in a Main Series game since Mario 64 DS!(I think)

most enemies were old, and boomboom reused
Which enemies were old? Among bosses, just Bowser (with a car!) and Boom Boom for mid bosses.

good job! we now know their name and absolutely nothing else!

I want a Super 3D Mario allstars using SMO engine
I'm saying it gets:
- Super Mario 64 DS
- Super Mario Sunshine
- Super Mario Galaxy 2
Mario in Disguise you took the words out of my mouth, I just about to post that.

4400seriesFAN YOU READ MY MIND DUDE!!!! SMG IS THE BEST!!!!
This is me lol.
ME TOO
4400seriesFAN yea galaxy is the best to me and 3D land and world felt generic and boring
