  • So i've been technically working in corporate America since 2018. I started at Deloitte, then moved to Accenture and now I'm at Google. My journey has been eye opening and rewarding at the same time. I've witnessed discrimination, bias, unconscious bias, you name it! Happy to share my story in hopes that it will help someone navigate this space better and learn from my experiences! Thanks for watching, don't forget to subscribe!

Bro is telling no lies! I had the same thing happen to me in corporate, this woman was literally upset because I did not hang out with them after work hours and I was like ma'am I keep my professional and personal life separate as a person who have worked in corporate all my life your co workers and managers are not your friends. So she started going around the office saying I wasn't working and not team player, but what she didn't know was that I was truly the wrong one to play with because I kept a document with dates, times, deadlines, and documentation of everything I did on the job and it dated back for months. I happily sent those documents into the EEOC and she was eventually fired please don't play with me. We also have to talk about how being a black introvert is like an internal sin in corporate America because the number of times people assumed I was mean just because I didn't want to gossip or hang out with them was wild to me.

Right I'm not even in corporate America and had the same issue my boss wanted to be friends I said okay at first but then it's started being overbearing. Wanting to hang out after a full shift I been around you all day don't want to hand out then texting me everyday at home . I had to tell him let's just keep our relationship professional it was too much and I had already told him I'm a introvert. Luckily he's a cool dude so he was cool about it I'm still nice with him at work though so I guess that helps . I've learned from past jobs being too quiet is not good so with this job I tried to force myself to be more outgoing I guess he thought I wanted to be friends.

I worked with a guy who was black just like me. One time I picked him up from the airport because he was stranded and he stayed at my home for two nights. Also, got him in touch with my ivy league friends when he was considering applying for business school. I was slow to tell him about my personal business, but eventually did. A year later, he got promoted and became my manager. 3 months later, my "friend" I'd talk to all the time about all his problems fired me from my high paying ($250K+) corporate job

Being a black person in corporate America is so exhausting 😔 why can’t we just do the work & go home without all the extras? If I don’t want to mingle & be extra friendly or hang out after work & get to know people more what does that have to do with my ability to do my job? Long as im respectful & cordial it should just be that. These companies always preach so much about “diversity” well that should include those who are introverts or more direct. They make us do all these bs personality quizzes to only want us all to act the same. And the passive aggressive whi*e women are the worse always finding something to complain about that has nothing to do with the actual job/work

You can. Make up a story about your personal life e.g., spouse, kids etc. Yeah, you shouldn't have to, but you better. It gives you easy outs. My kid is sick. I have to pick my child up from school, the little league game etc. My husband/wife is having surgery.

It was always about me avoiding difficult co-workers. I'd get brought into the office to be told that I'm too serious or seem nervous. I would simply say that I want to make it home to my wife and kids without ruffling co-worker's feathers. They took that as me being a threat or too condescending. After a year and 8 months, I respectfully resigned.

That’s why if you think the PIP is uncalled for document everything and engage with an employment lawyer ASAP.
The goal is for you to fail the PIP so they can let you go without severance. If you engage with an employment lawyer during that process (and you want to leave the company) you can at least do it with 4-8 weeks of severance pay.

    • @Sababbby
      @Sababbby 2 месяца назад +2

PIPs are purposely subjective, because when objective measures are met the person can't be legally fired unless their contract stipulates that they can be fired without cause. But in the US I think being fired without cause is legal in non unionized roles.

BW here previously in CA. I dealt with the usual microagressions, as well as blatant racism, including jokes about AA. I opened my own firm eventually, but prior to, someone put me onto the 48 laws of power. I never let on anything was bothering me, and methodically planned my exit, because no one was about to mess up my bag. They were SHOCKED when I left, because when I tell yall they thought I was the happiest of campers 😂 and my boss even tried to “warn me” of how hard it is to be successful in business (though NONE had EVER owned a business). Anywho, 15 years in, very successful multi - million dollar firm, and have even hired some former co-workers. You just need to learn how to play their game, and be the better player. And for those who think “I shouldn’t have to do all that”, then don’t. I was able to do that because I had a long term plan to leave for my own business

There should be no expectation that we're going to hang out together or be friends, which is inauthentic anyway because a friend is someone you choose, not someone you're forced to be around because you both work at the same place. All this talk of us being family is making people think we're supposed to be super close and it's really just insincere to think this way.

Black woman here, and I relate to this as well. Unfortunately, I've gone through with BOTH "others" and "us" (it's even more hurtful when it's one of us). Corporate people don't like when you're only focused on professional work and you're not "social" (even if you ARE being kind and personable, it's not enough to them), especially if you're introverted (like I am) or you just have a reserved, low-key personality. They like Black folks smiling 24/7, super bubbly, and funny... that's what makes them comfortable 🙄😒 Hey, if that's you're natural personality, that's fine (and even if you do, y'all have to be careful too because you can go from the favorite to the most hated real fast... it's called "pet to threat"... insane but real). But for those of us who are quieter, we have to play the game and become versions of ourselves that may be pleasant to them but inauthentic to us, and it's truly draining on the mind, body, and spirit over time. When you're able to find a work environment where you can truly be yourself and get commended for your efforts, it's truly a blessing but unfortunately not the norm for most.

    Goddamn.
Microagressions aside, this all just makes me sick to realize corporate work has little to do with actually working. From interviewing to day-to-day functions to climbing the ladder, everything comes down to a vibe.
I’m surprised airplanes aren’t just falling out of the sky everyday.
One thing that’s always been tough as a black man in corporate is finding other black men that I could relate to. At my last position, black men were either at the bottom of the hierarchy as janitors or at the top as partners.
I can handle the pressure, but I still have a hard time grappling with the idea that corporate work has largely been exclusionary and that I’m the exception.

Your story mimics mine exactly. I am a HR Practitioner and have been a Generalist and a Recruiter for many years. I worked for 5 Fortune 500 companies. As a black person, who is originally from Ghana in West Africa, not only did I have to fake the funk on a daily basis, I had to prove my capability and competency at the workplace twice as much; specifically as a black man and an African to boot. After 30 years living and working in the States, I got fed up with the fakeness, cut throat office politics, the stress and layoffs and decided to return home to Ghana. Although, I am a naturalized American citizen, returning back home was the best decision I made. I live to work, instead of working to live, which was how I felt in the States. I also have less stress, mentally and physically and a better balance between work and life.

They recapped daily and weekly reports at meetings every morning and every Monday. And then quarterly reports. My quality rating was unmatched. That fake excited, volume based approached you mentioned doesn’t work. I built relationships with my people. And that was on a team that was the best performing hospital in the state. The funny part is that once people saw me leave, 2 or 3 people immediately said if he’s out, I’m out. 😂 also said and done they lost 24 out of 26 people from that team.

    Hi Corey,
Thank you for sharing your corporate journey as a black man. It’s refreshing and inspiring to see the light for others at the end of the tunnel. As a young black woman who has been navigating the crazy world of Corporate America since 2018, I have experienced bias, code switching and discriminatory circumstances myself and it’s disheartening and disgusting.
My advice to any other minorities navigating in the corporate world today, I strongly advise that you keep a journal of strange behavior happening to you at work, document all unjust treatment, know a good discrimination lawyer and the EEOC process, and acquire that attorney the moment you feel a PIP plan is on the way because majority of the time it doesn’t end in “our” favor. All attorneys don’t require that you be terminated before they start to work on your case.
Corey, you content is great and I can’t wait to see more. I wish you continued success! Thank you!

Thanks for sharing your story Corey! It was very enlightening and encouraging.
I posted the below in another channel and thought it would be useful to share here on my survival guide being the only Black guy in tech.
My survival rules as a BM in a corporate environment are:
Don’t ever make a mistake and do what you say you’re going to do before it’s due.
Not all BP you see around you may not be for you. It’s best to stay to yourself. You can acknowledge if they do, but keep it moving
If you’re not clear on a direct order, ask. Never assume. If you screw up it’s like treason for a bm or bw.
Don’t go to HR for anything or to report an issue. Find another job.
Don’t tell folks all your business especially what you’re buying (like a house, car). Keep them in abit of suspense and mystery. You don’t want them to be able to categorize you. Be like a rubics cube. Spilling all your business to them is like giving them your W2 to them. If a manager needs to reduce headcount it puts an even bigger target on you even if you are a top performer.
Only talk to woman at work only if its needed about work-related stuff. Don’t ever drive outside those boundaries. And talk them in an open visible environment with other people around, never in a secluded place.
Save all emails and chat conversations and know how to quickly recall them.
Don’t compare yourself with other cultures when it comes to title, promotions and pay. And don’t compete with them. You are in a different world.
The only thing you have as a BM or BW in a “other culture corporate environment “ is trust with them. If you lose that your done. If you screw up majorly on a project or task it’s best to start looking for another job.
If “them other folks” want small talk keep it short and concise. Let them do all the talking. Dont feel guilty joining early on a zoom call and everyone else is muted. You can say Hi and press the mute button again.
Dont ever complain in front of other co-workers or talk about other co-workers
Be cordial and a team player regardless how you feel about the person your interacting with
At “team building outings” don’t drink a lot and don’t act a fool. You are technically still on the clock and people don’t forget.
These are some of my survival tips with over 15years in a corporate environment as the “only black guy” in tech.
