  • This video is more or less an answer to a question that viewers have pitched to me from time to time about whether a quick, simple beard trim was possible in that way that I present it here.
The good news is, yes! Anyone can do this at any length they desire within the range of the trimmer guards.
This video will show you that there is a way to get it done if you don't have time, a steady hand, or the confidence to perform more detailed trimming on your own.

I love your videos. I’m here to learn how to trim my husbands beard for him. I talked him into growing one but now he needs help keeping it neat and doesn’t have a steady hand. Just got the trimmer yesterday and know I have a lot to learn. Thankfully he trusts me.

I trim like this with a #7 guard every couple weeks. Same length guard, full face, against the grain. I'm not surrounded by friends or people that talk about beards(haha) so I had no idea it was some well-known "never do that" type of thing in the beard community. Looks good to me, and is quick and dummy proof. *shrugs*

Up until recently, this is how I always trimmed my beard (the past 6 years) and never thought my beard looked bad. In fact, I would get compliments on my beard. I don’t plan on going back to that style, but there’s certainly no reason to hate it.

Hey Greg - I know this is an old video, but I really do appreciate your help - 56 years old and haven't let facial hair show for about 20 years or so - my beard was brown 20 years ago and is now white - which is actually pretty cool - so 56 year old novice at this - just trimmed my beard using this method and it actually turned out well - it's not perfect, but it was a good start - thanks for putting time into this and I have subscribed - I'm also bald with a beard and it really is a good look - God bless and keep 'em coming!

Yes you are right - you gave me the confidence to trim my beard using the against the grain technique -and the result looks pretty damn good! My beard lays pretty damn flat against my cheeks and trimming with the grain just doesn’t work for me.

It seems that if you want to get all the hair the same length with a particular guard, the only way to do it, is to go against the grain. When you go with the grain, each hair doesn’t stand up enough to get cut.

That's awesome! I'll letting my beard grow longer. Don't have a problem getting a neckline with a razor but when the hairs at the bottom of the beard get long it's an issue. Have you ever gone against the grain with trimmers just barely along the neckline with a little shorter guard than the rest just to thin out the very bottom a little? Just barely lifting underwear in other words.

Is your beard same size on all sides, or your goatee/circle beard is bigger than the cheeks because you cut all equally in this video but your front part, the goatee looks bigger? Do you changed your guard size for the front part, or you cut equally the whole beard, and your face shape makes your beard appear kind of ducktail?

Well, the cut would be longer, for starters, if you went with the grain. It can still look good but it takes a little more work. I actually prefer trimming with the grain. See my video called How I Saved My Beard. That beard was from using a #5 guard with the grain.

I use mostly beard balms and oils made by Artius Man. I have many others but those are my favorites. They have a wide variety of scented, all natural products that are top grade. Bay Rum, IPA, Coffee, Latte, and Midnight Ride are some of my favorites. You can also request free beard oil samples from them, which is great!

It's a Wahl brand - I've had a mustache/goatee combo since the late 90s and I've gone through 2 Wahl trimmers I honestly think they're about the best electric trimmers that just about anyone can afford. (The name is just about worn off but I recognize it) Proper use of lube on your trimmer I think is important. I use Remington "Shaver Saver" lube at least once a month on my trimmer but I tend to use mine on a weekly basis.

Right, this is exactly what I noticed throughout the years of trimming my beard myself and going to my barber.. I thought that maybe I was missing something and that going with the grain is somehow inferior. At least that's how the beard community made it seem. Kind of like how you expressed something similar about hearing that same sentiment all the time.
The way I see it is, practice, make mistakes, learn from those mistakes, and do what works for you. Even master barbers differ in technique from time to time. Anyways, thanks for the reply, stay healthy, and take care, bro.
