Of course, it is difficult to measure how many are queer in any given locale. It is my belief that just about the same % of people are queer in every location of the globe, yet some people feel safer and more free than others to come out.

@@frankcorrea8691That's my ruling philosophy for everything I do or support: Live and Let Live, and do unto others as you would want them to do unto you. BTW I am from and live in New Mexico and am gay.
I am not shocked by Vermont at all. As a Bernie Sanders fan I have watched debates in the state and noticed that there were several trans candidates for offices like house or governor and they have been treated very friendly and respectful with candidates focusing on actual issues.
My favorite was when Democrat Peter Welch accepted a debate with a trans girl that was monated from I believe the Liberty Union Party and even while she was obviously not media trained both sides focused on actually improving lifes.
I also watched an assembly debate with a Vermont Progressive Party MP obviously being culturally gay and it wasn't about someones identity and they talked about how to improve youth mental health.
I hope one day personal identities will be handled liked that everywhere in the world.
I want to see someone like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bernie Sanders, AOC, the most openly gay gay dude, a trans girl, a non binary person and an autistic person all being able to serve in the same place, respecting each other and working on making life better for the states citizens.
Also more political parties would be great. The VPP I mentioned earlier is the only party outside Republicans and Democrats with electoral success.

I'm from Canada and we have a high rating for being gay friendly, I would love to visit your country for many reasons.

Other than Nebraska, none are real shockers. These states/territories tend to be libertarian socially which is the best space for people to be who they are for better or for worse... They also tend to have legalized cannabis by now, another sign of progressive values/thinking... Here in Canada? Both are pretty mainstream by now..

AZ has a lot of gays living in Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Lots of Home Depot lesbians driving big pick up trucks. Lots of gay guy’s living in downtown PHX who have a yearly subscription to the PHX theater musical series. Not kidding.
Sounds great! Arizona is currently at 11% LGBTQ which would put it pretty high up the list, tied with a few other states for the number 9 slot!
@@QueerKingdomOfficial I can believe it! Gays love warm weather and good scenery. It also doesn’t hurt that it’s only a 4 hour drive to Palm Springs. The gays are even turning AZ blue and it’s fabulous.

Gen Z is the first to grow up in a mostly free and safe environment to be openly queer and it really shows in the data! I remember hearing as a kid that only 4-5% of people were LGBT but now nearly every statistic shows that number being closer to 1 in 7 like you have mentioned. Amazing what some human rights and basic freedoms will do. 😍
It would be awesome to have a video about the queerest indigenous reservations but I guess the data does not even exist.
That is a good point, I think the data situation is an issue but would make for an epic video if possible. I’ll see what I can do 😊
Great video. I've been looking for a more accepting state to move to and this has helped me. I currently live in one of the worst states for LGBTQ people -- South Carolina and can't wait to get out of here.

I came out when at USC in the late 60s. I had to move to NYC for the sake of freedom and well-being. Now, luckily there are more choices, especially since NYC is so expensive.
I am one state to the north of you NC and I am looking at options to get out of dodge if things go south in the next election. I have picked up and moved cross country before and I can do it again. I only came back to take care of my parents and that era of my life is over now.
I feel you. I live in Texas. It is terrible here.
New Mexico had a head start. In the early 1900's, to about 1960 or so, Santa Fe was where families dropped off their daughters who were "special". Though it wasn't until much later that laws were passed protecting/supporting LGBTQetc people, those "special" women had already made Santa Fe and most of Northern NM a safe and friendly place.
I'm an aro-ace nonbinary person. Born in Nebraska and lived there til I was 9. Now I live in southern California.
I've lived in New Mexico for over a decade now and I can attest to the fact that it's a very accepting place for gays. The only drawback is that once you're here you never want to leave. You get spoiled by the perfect weather and the clear blue politics.

It would be amazing to live in a place where I might be able to have a gay community to be part of. The majority of my friends here in North Dakota are straight. We have Pride here every year but there is no gay community to speak of.
I hear you! I’m currently living in Eastern Europe and am experiencing the same lack of community. For now, I hope that this channel can at least start to grow into a community of sorts for us and people like us around the world. 😊

This video has nothing to do with that, it’s about the states with the highest percent of out queer people statistically in 2024. This is not about top states for queer culture or history. That would obviously be a separate video. 😂
Too many people in the larger states so the percentage goes way down. CA at almost 40 million people isn't going to have a huge percent share of lgbt people even though their might be more total lgbt people in that state.

Major cities yes in NY but up north not so much as I found out when I lived in Watertown. The further you go north the redder that part of the state gets.

I live in Seattle, WA, one of the most gay-friendly places in America- which is great for me since I’m bi. (In fact, we were one of the first states to legalize gay marriage!) I think the only reason my state didn’t make this list is because it’s got like seven million people, and most of these states have tiny populations in comparison to the other very gay-friendly states like WA, CO, NY, IL and CA.
I’d say the most gay-friendly states are: California, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, New York, Illinois, Colorado, Vermont, Mass, Utah (one of the only ruby-red states that don’t actively try to dehumanize us!), and Phoenix and Tucson in Arizona (they’re the only reason it’s a swing state now, and the many reservations in the northeast of the state don’t even allow gay marriage, they were very accepting for thousands of years but were made very homophobic by the missionaries, a tragic legacy of colonialism).
States to REALLY avoid: Texas (except maybe Austin and Dallas), Florida (except Orlando, Fort Myers amd Tampa), Idaho, Tennessee
Tennessee isn't safe, but they do tend to have decent LGBTQ+ support groups for adults and young adults. Kentucky is also not safe.
I am from Vermont and yes it is excellent place to be gay. I feel lucky every day to be here.
I grew up in the 1950s, when being "queer" was considered sick and perverted. I pretended to be straight until I left home at age 18 - which was a great relief. I endured vicious insults and hostility, but did not allow the hostile people to affect me. I guess I was born too early.
You are safe and accepted and loved here and while the world is still not perfect I’m grateful for how far things have come and for the ability to keeping fighting to make things even better in the future. Thank you for being here and for your comment. 🏳️🌈 🤗
I grew up in Nebraska and left forty years ago. I have to say, it's changed dramatically for the better in terms of its attitude towards LGBTQ folks, at least in the capital, Lincoln, and the largest city, Omaha. The rest of the state... not so much, at least in my experience.
As a newcomer in Nebraska, I can totally vouch this comment 💯
My late aunt, a Nebraska lifer, told me that right after WWII, Lincoln developed a huge gay community. No doubt that's diminished since, but she tried to get me to move there so I would be "safe".
You didn't say New York or California I thought that would be high there. I'm in NYC.
NYC would probably be number 1 if the rest of the state was not so different! Currently both NY and CA are in the upper middle at around 11% 😊
I feel less safe being gay in the United States nowadays than 10 years ago. There’s a lot of states heavily attacking gay rights from Florida to Missouri!!
To be honest, I was actually talking about this exact thing with my boyfriend. It felt safer in say 2015 than nearly a decade later now in 2024. It’s sad, and scary. That is one of the main reasons why I wanted to make this channel. To eventually become a resource for news, info, and a general safe space etc for our community. Thanks for being here and I hope this channel and its content and its community can help make things feel a little bit less hopeless for all of us.

Aren't Koreans against LGBT?
Currently Korea is lagging behind other developed countries in LGBTQ rights but there are multiple bills and court cases in the works that could legalize civil unions or even full marriage equality in the near future. Korea, especially religious Christian Koreans, have been slow to progress on social issues, yet being queer in Korea is still generally safe and the country remains one of the best for LGBTQ people in Asia after only countries like Taiwan, Thailand, Nepal, Hong Kong, and Japan which generally score higher across metrics. Hopefully Korea will be catching up to the rest of the developed world on these issues soon. My hopes are high they will!
As a foreign non-binary person I always hear the insane news from your country and feel anxious for everyone there, but I'm so oddly delighted to see how some of the red sates have some of the highest number of LGBTQ+ people against all odds. I know it's because of the cities, the country I live in has the same, but I often seem to forget queer people are literally living everywhere.
California and Florida are often referred to as the gayest states in the United States, but this does not seem to be the case in reality.
This is also by percentage of gay residents out of the total State population and not sheer numbers. Also if you look at the counties with more lgbt+ people by percentage than the national average, they are mostly in New England, the Midwest cities, the Pacific Coast, and Florida.

Oregon is awful for gays. The majority of state is rural. Portland is the only largest city. Unless you work for gov the majority of private employers will make nice to your face but the stigma still exists where gays gets discriminated against / fired.
People will try and sell an idea but dance around actually accepting you.
I can imagine it's awful in the rural Eastern Oregon areas, but I've lived in Western Oregon now for 34 years, and as a 74 year old married, gay man, I can say we have never run into a problem here. In fact, just the opposite. Our experience has been wonderful---my employer had (I'm retired) a non-discrimination policy and my husband and I were always included and openly accepted in work-related social events. And the state laws regarding discrimination are some of the best in the country. I've never spent any time in Eastern Oregon other than Bend, and we have experienced no problems there either. There are always going to be some communities in every state that are more socially conservative, but what matters are the state laws that protect LGBTQ. Oregon has one of the best records when it comes to protecting us from discrimination. Our last governor was openly bisexual and the current governor is openly Lesbian and married. I'm not sure how much better it could get, other than convincing the extreme right wingers in the eastern part of the state and a couple counties in the southern part of the state to fix themselves.

I am glad it has worked out for you. Maybe it’s better with gay couples being more accepted. Rather than being a single gay men? I would consider myself a liberal conservative. Blending in / passing as best as possible is what I have always done. So it’s not like I am trying to draw negative attention to myself. Perception is everything. I don’t have a partner unfortunately. So I get this vibe that maybe people think something is wrong with me? I just feel working in an office setting things can be a bit subtle. While the heterosexual married couples talk about their married lives and children and grandchildren. I have nothing to contribute in that area. I am deliberately left out while the other heterosexual sexual couples go to business dinners. Overlooked for promotions even though I have stellar reviews each year. Good ole boys. I try to share about my life but careful it’s not too much. It has been made clear that my “lifestyle” is not approved of. Not by all but enough. It’s the subtle underhanded jabs of “I don’t need to hear it.” When all I was going to share in a conversation was maybe doing something mundane like going to the gym or riding my bike. Like they assume I am going to spill some x rated lust filled night out. (I could only wish lol) They make nice to your face but say another behind your back. Many religious people that know I am gay. They definitely treat me differently. I have worked for private sector family business for many years. I often think maybe, if I worked for the government things would be different. Hard to say. The LGBTQ drama in headlines lately hasn’t helped either.
@@BennyB5555 I suggest checking Buddhist, Unitarian Universalist, Unity Church or if none of these exist Roman Catholic Church. Your family business makes it difficult for you to move. The White Christian Nationalists Protestants culture makes it difficult for you. On the other hand - being a point of light creates wiggle room for other people who are in the closet.
What rank is California?
Pretty much in the middle I image. There are a lot of POC from extremist religious backgrounds who would be afraid to come out, more so than in less diverse states where most feel feel safe to express themselves as radical religious ideas are less important to people.

probably right behind all the states in this video, the thing of it is that California pretty much operates likes its own country, & has such a large & diverse population that can’t be considered more pro-gay than all the listed, smaller states with higher LGBT people as a proportion of the population, California literally passed proposition 8 (banning same-sex marriage) with a slight majority of votes.

They have some of the largest queer communities by raw numbers, but not by % of total. Large immigrant communities in these states where children are not safe or free to come out is likely one possible reason for their low standing in % terms compared to states with less immigration from close minded countries outside European/Latin world.

Though I spent the first two decades of my life in New Mexico, I wasn't aware of its current status re LGBTQ matters. Though I've spent 50-plus years in other places I do get back from time to time. I'll take a closer look next time I'm there.

And may I recommend for gay vacations that you check out Puerto Rico, the people of the island are inclusive and I have never felt discrimination in traveling there for 25 yrs, it also boasts a vibrant culture and fun gay pride in a tropical setting.

I'm in NYC and it's so gay and ethninically diverse you can easily find whomever you're attracted to. Surprised it didn't make the list with millions of people in the city, including the boroughs.
In earlier generations there was still a lot of stigma. I sm born in 1960 and mostly only the people I slept with know that I have a bi side to me. And i'd rather keep it that way.
Probably safer as things are going backwards in a lot of ways :( that is one reason I keep my identity privet making these videos!

Another reason I love living in Blue Oregon. People are free to live their true lives here, no matter what that is.
Florida's Mitigating circumstances : my gay friends played the role of The Hulk at Universal and Pooh Bear at Disney. They have lived in Florida for many years and they like Florida because it is a right to privacy state. The right to privacy is a Florida Contstitutional Amendment.
Alaska didn't surprise me. A lot of outdoorsy gay men enjoy Alaska and they form tight friendly networks up there.

For a red state with a dominant anti-LGBTQ religion, Utah has consistently had very large gay and allies turnout for Pride parades recently. It would be nice to know where we rank.
Utah sits at 9% identifying as LGBTQ which has them just about in the middle of the pack. It is incredible how truly decent Utah is for queer people despite the religious views in the area. I have an overall very positive opinion on Utah these days. Really interesting and impressive state. Should be an example to other red leaning states.

What happened to California and New York?
Immigration from countries where parents threaten their children into staying in the closet. So much migration from South Asia, Africa, and the Middle East over recent years to those states compared to the states on this list that increasingly entire neighborhoods are becoming dangerous for queer people, especially if you are apart of the given group. Hopefully within a few generations or less it will change but for now it is a tragic reality for many children of people from less developed and religiously extremist societies.
Did I miss Ohio? Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati just to name a few of the highly gay cities
Ohio is at 11% of the population which means it does not make it into the top 8 but is still quite high nevertheless.

I feel percentage tells only some of the story. Although some of the more populated states may not have a high percentage they have many more. Also bigger communities in whole.

@QueerKingdomOfficial Great video btw. When it comes to the MAP website, Colorado also ranks in it's overall tally a 43/44.5 which is the single highest if any state for LGBT rights which I'm very proud of as a gay Coloradoan.

New Mexico is a blue state by population density. Hillary and Biden easily won NM and Biden will win it again because rural red land doesn't vote, people do and most people in the State are solid Democrat.
Why this states all white ones?
Because white people are far more tolerant on average than people of color, also they are less religious and treat their children with more respect.
NM is doesn't really fit that description.
@@trish8964 Good point, I meant white/latino or more broadly “European.” If you look at a map of Gay Marriage for example, every country currently other than Taiwan and South Africa are White/Latino and generally support for queer people and women rights are always the highest by a wide margin in white/latino European influenced societies. Easy to see when you look at any issue like trans rights, gay rights, women’s rights, children’s right etc on a map. It’s always Europe, North America, and Latin America + Australia and New Zealand.
Maybe it could be because white people generally may be more open minded than minority groups to homosexuality.
I am as surprised about Nebraska and Alaska on the list as NY and California not on the list!
