      One of the greatest thing I've learned from an excellent portrait photographer is this: charm to disarm. Make sure you get comfortable with your model before the shoot. Learn a bit about them, including their perceived flaws, so you know exactly what makes them comfortable.

      @@tommybro5313 sometimes there won't be a connection between you and the model, and that is totally ok. when that happens to me, I'll switch to doing candid shots and then telling the model to just pretend I'm not there, and act like they're just taking selfies by themselves. that usually puts them back in their comfort zone, and it always results in getting some pretty amazing images. good luck!

    Awesome video! I'm a beginner photographer and just bought my camera (Canon Rebel T6) a few months ago. Your videos have helped me understand photography so much better! I had my first "session" last night, and I'm proud to report that I shot in manual mode the whole time :)

    • @f8bethere

      Manual mode is optimum, but if you're just spot metering for one shot, maybe a back lit or similar, you can use the auto mode of choice, and use the camera's exposure lock (most have one) to lock the spot metered exposure in for the image.

    I guess that this is directed toward experienced professionals as it doesn't show how to actually meter. You just talk about metering the whole way without demonstration. Just because of your youtube title it might be worth while adding some inserts to show what you do when you do it. Cheers

      I get that some people simply want easy to use equipment to enjoy the activity of taking photos, but keep in mind that photography is also an art and the more control you have over it, the more influence you as an artist, have on that piece. Also for many enthusiast photographers, adjustments create a more personal and deep connection to the photo they take and a lot of them love the aspect to having to think through what settings to use under X or Y conditions, it's part of the whole experience of doing photography.

    Newbie question. re product photography. Using Still lighting. Using canon and colur checker card. I make glass art. Each piece is the same size and shape, but each piece is made of many different colours. Im using f8 - iso 100 . Am i doing this correctly. I switch to manual. I take a photograph of my white card in front of my art. i set this as custom white balance. i then half click when camera at full zoom is focused on the cross hair on the GRAY card. I scroll until the lines on the vertical meter (exposure compensation) are at zero. i then photograph the white card again, and set this as the white balance. i then put camera on tripod and photograph, but before i full click i notice the meter is not at zero, i think i understand why, so i take my picture of my art with the colour checker in there also . when i swap the art over that was originally a dark piece, for a piece that is light in colour, the photograph produces an over exposed result.
    What am i doing wrong ?

    A spot meter will only give you a 'prefect' exposure if you take a reading off of an 18% gray card. Anything you meter lighter than middle gray will give you an underexposed image, and anything you meter darker than middle gray will give you an over exposed image. An incident meter is a better choice most of the time as it is less likely to be fooled by dark or light backgrounds. In the end the photographer needs to master the tool as no tool can possibly know what the intentions of the photographer are. However, grass, the sky, and Caucasian skin are close enough to middle gray which is why spot-metering seemed to work out for this tutorial. And shooting in Raw helps in that if the metering is off be a stop or so you maybe able to save yourself. In the Kodachrome days sloppy metering would completely ruin your day...you had to be 'Spot On', or no more that 1/3 of a stop off in either direction. A lot of todays digital photographers would be in 'deep do-do' to put it mildly.

    • @ACitizenOfOurWorld
      @ACitizenOfOurWorld 8 лет назад

      Whatever you meter, the camera will recommend and exposure that will result in a middle tone for sure. That's why the following step is to compensate up or down as desired. Example, spot meter her face, adjust camera to expose one stop lighter than the recommendation. Spot meter dark wood, make the wood darker by the desired amount with a faster shutter speed. Look up Zone System.

    Are you using spot metering in Aperture priority mode and then taking the reading and switching over to manual mode? You took a ready up close to your model then backed up and took the shot. Wouldn't that have changed the reading?

    QUESTION: so once you spot meter under the models eye and you over exposed by 1 stop you can then just move around with the same setting? I would think the setting would change based on the light that's falling on her face?

    • @Molaleni
      @Molaleni 9 лет назад

      Set your camera to manual mode. Once you're happy with spot meter reading that's exposing for the skin, you can move around and the settings won't change until you change them again.

    • @Marckymarc71
      @Marckymarc71 9 лет назад +1

      TheMaddman187 As long as you're in manual mode you're good. In manual mode the meter only advises--it doesn't change any setting. Don't try this in AP, SP, P or Auto because then your settings ARE going to be changed by the camera every time you press the shutter. Make several test shots and check the LCD after every one and tweak the settings--literally dial in the perfect shot--knowing how to use the histogram helps a lot. once you've got the perfect exposure you can just shoot away as long as the light doesn't change. You'll notice after he got the look he wanted (f/2, iso 100, 1/320s) he shot ALL the pictures with the exact same setting and they all came out perfect.

    Thanks for the helpful video. I love your style of explaining things.
    There's one thing I'm confused about though: When you started shooting the actual portraits, you were at the settings to correctly expose her skin (1/400th). So how come that didn't blow out the background, particularly the sky?

    • @jasonbodden8816
      @jasonbodden8816 9 лет назад +1

      Saad Khan Most of the location is a bit dark. The sky is largely blocked out by the tree's branches. But also he was mostly at fast shutter speeds to balance out using the wide f/2 aperture. So nothing gets blown out. And I think the way the video was recorded might be making the location look darker than it really is.

      ***** Good point. I'm not sure exactly where they are, but I do know there's a state park in that vicinity. And it might depend on the scale and nature of the shoot. Even if you don't need an actual legal, printed, laminated, permit with a fancy lanyard, it might be best to just verbally ask the neighboring business, or park ranger, or whoever, if it's ok to be there and shoot. I'm not sure if SLR Lounge has any videos or articles about best practices for shooting on location and permits. I bet they do though. Cheers.

      w Larm You cant be shooting at f/2 with that kit lens.

    • @jasonbodden8816
      @jasonbodden8816 9 лет назад +1

      w Larm You don't have the necessary wide aperture to be shooting at ISO 100 and fast shutter speeds. Your lens is a variable aperture kit lens that on the wide end only goes to 3.5 but the more you zoom in (to a narrow field of view) you'll only get maximum apertures of 4.5 to 5.6. Way easier for this guy to get the depth of field and the exposure he needs with his 50mm 1.8 Prime lens he's using at f/2 (which lets in a lot more light than your kit lens will ever be able to. If you haven't already, and you can afford it, invest in the 50mm 1.8. You won't regret it. Tack sharp, clarity to kill and it won't break your pocket :)

    There's technically only 1 way to know if you truly have "proper exposure" and it's more on the scientific side of things, but it's the only way. Forget histograms and back screens.

    And now spot meter for that white dress .. While its correct that there are lots of situations where the spot metering is very helpful there are many situations where its much worse than other modes. If light conditions dont change manual shooting is the way to go and 1-2 testshots are better than rely on the metering.

      hugoboss Actually, there are very few situations where spot metering won't work. And besides, he was shooting in Manual for this vid. Your meter is a good base indicator but you'll obviously use your eyes after a test shot or two, depending on what exposure you want to see in your photo. He greatly exaggerated about getting the perfect exposure on the first shot every single time, though. I'll give you that.

    was quite surprised at many of the comments, I didn't think he was obnoxious to her! I think that people read way too much into what he said, he could EASILY have meant that she doesn't care about technical stuff, which is the case of most people who are not photographers, by the way! He may not have meant it "because she's a girl, hence dumb" like everyone read into it, but simply as an ordinary person not obsessed with settings in photography. I did not find him offensive (and I'm a dyed in the wool feminist, by the way!) As to her, I found her eyes scary, not just angry but real scary, I wouldn't want to photograph her, despite her good looks! Again, as to him, I found this a helpful explanation, and I think that some people use any and all internet forums as a punchbag/dump-bag for their very own aggression, projecting way too much onto others. Even in over a photography issue. So much for human nature....

    Other Channels photographers: Take 1, 2 or 3 test shots..
    This Channel: No more test shots, just grab the right exposure from spot metering..
    No more waste shots from now on.. :)

      +Petru Le Grand Histograms can be as fooled as the lightmeter. They are not a good judge on metering and exposure. I can think of many scenes that the histogram says is perfect and yet the photo is trash.

      @crollinsphoto 6 лет назад

      Maybe like me, could care less about it? I quit using a histogram long ago when technically perfect exposures just didn't look that great and the client never liked them either. I shoot for the client's approval not a piece of graphic machinery.

    A lot of talk about "spot metering" but not actually showing us how to spot meter. I'm having a hard time understanding your videos because you explain things as if we already know what youre talking about. Maybe break it down a bit more for the beginners such as myself? Thanks.

    This is wrong. That is what the semi-automatic modes do, so why do it manually? Learn the zone system for various skin tones and objects in the environment to get proper exposures. Most proper exposures are never 18% grey. Exposure compensation on semi-automatic modes and manual modes are in place for a reason.

    So many comments about him being a misogynist. Ever think he was simply saying she doesn't care about the nuisances of a camera hobby instead if jumping to a conclusion that he's sexist?
