In today's shin megami tensei lore video we will be talking about one of my favorite demons, the metatron. A request from the fans and something I really wanted to cover in the smt lore series. The Metatron is an enigmatic figure and fan favorite of the shin megami tensei series. The angels of shin megami tensei are vast in their design and purpose, with Metatron as one of the most important of the archangels. In shin megami tensei metatron plays an important role as mouthpiece for and even representative for YHVH and subtly guides the player throughout their journey. While most people don't give metatron a second thought as they go through smt games he is very important to smt lore as a whole. With his addition in smt v and him having some interesting implication for shin megami tensei v lore I thought it was a good idea to talk a little bit about the metatron. The metatron lore goes back thousands of years and took a while to compile and present, but I hope I did shin megami tensei writing team proud. From fire of sinai to his voice lines in the shin megami tensei games show his power in the realm of yhvh. Of all the angels in shin megami tensei the metatron is the most important and the most powerful. For those looking to know more about shin megami tensei and smt lore in general I hope I can scratch that itch for you.
The metatron, or the voice of God is a figure depicted in almost every Shin Megami Tensei game as YHVH’s head messenger and highest of the archangels. Despite his importance, not many people know of the lore behind him. Each of the archangels have the unanimous task of serving God and bringing about his will, but some are better suited to tasks than others. Michael the warrior angel is fated to overcome Lucifer in the book of revelations, and Gabriel prophesying Jesus’s birth from Mary via immaculate conception. Little is known about the other archangels for certain, but from my research I have a good idea who Metatron is.
One could argue that Metraton and Sandalphon "metalic" looks might indicate they are "artificial" angels because of their human origin. Other than that, I can't see much reason to differentiate those two from the others so much.

It could also be a theme around how the angel's are so obedient to the God in smt that they are basically just automatons.

It's because the term Canon was originally coined by Nicene Christian councils to determine Mainstream Christianity of Catholicism or Orthodox denominations (Not just of Nicaea but it's the famous one for determining Arianism status) for acknowledgement to Western European public, including uniformity of their beliefs while also acknowledged by Roman Empire

Considering the actual relationship between Metatron and Sandalphon, I'm almost surprised we haven't had more MegaTen games or even just moments featuring the two together in some capacity--be it as allies or rivals. Plus, both of them share a metallic look, but have contrasting colours; Metatron is Silver, while Sandalphon is Gold. Maybe I'm just being a bit too hopeful, but I really, really, REALLY hope we can see more of these two together in the future.
That would be awesome yeah. Something capitalizing on their similar origin and authority in heaven would be very interesting
Know 2 years later but, SMT Vengeance seems to have fusion attacks, That means there is a chance, Sandalphon and Metatron are going to have one together.

I've been fascinated by Metatron ever since I saw him in SMT3. My neighbor is a theology professor, so I went over and borrowed every book she has on Enoch and Metatron. I recommend anyone interested should play El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron on PS3/360. The game is great and has spectacular art direction. Thank you for making a video on Metatron, Tony!

@@JoeyLamontagne I had no idea, I just had to look them/it up. It's a cool design, I think. I'm pure neutral with chaotic tendencies/leanings, so it looks like he's my boss, haha.
Metatron is one of my absolute favorite demons, but for personal reasons rather than just design or lore. You see, I played SMT Imagine back when it was managed under Aeria Games before its switch to Atlus' short-lived online games branch. I befriended this one dude who was clearly a very devout Christian. He put up with my own issues and idiosyncrasies I had at the time, so I easily switched to Law from the initial Chaos run I was doing (which I was admittedly only doing to get Surt over Raphael) to play alongside him.
Aeria tended to run promotional giveaways where if you spent X-amount of money you could get awards. One of them was a giveaway of high-level demons such as Astaroth, Metatron, and the four Riders. He apparently earned this one but already had Metatron from the in-game method (which was hard as all get-out) so he managed to somehow convince management to give me his. Even starting out with only its base skills, that Metatron was like a nuclear warhead to a mid-level player like me. Good times.
Apologies for rambling about things ultimately unrelated to the video. You've done great job and I learned quite a bit about one of my favorite Heralds.

@@cpl.targrein1793 I do too. He probably just decided to quit after the server switch. The game itself didn't last too much longer either. It apparently continued for some time in JP, but the English servers were dropped by Atlus like a hot potato.
I'm of two minds on Metatron, on one hand I love his design, using him and his lore, where he is one the few angels to directly serve the Great Will instead of just his avatar YHVH. On the other hand though he does feel IMO like a spotlight stealing character that detracts from Michael and SMT tends to put a little too much emphasis on non canonical lore over canonical ones to the determinant of the story and alignment balance. (though to be fair this complaint is mostly directed towards YHVH who gets twisted more often into a Demiurge role than the actual Demiurge demon)

Definitely agree. Too many SMT games are way to focused towards Chaos because they almost entirely paint God as some sort of Demiurge figure who wants to erase free will and make humanity slaves instead of a benevolent if lawful being that just wants to create a perfect, if stagnant world without evil or sin.
Maruki from P5R was a far better repersentation of YHVH's goals and personality than SMT YHVH. I would have completely agreed with Maruki and have willingly sided with him if not for one simple fact. Unlike a perfect divine being like biblicly accurate YHVH Maruki is a flawed human who could easily be corrupted over time and with ultimate power and no one to stop him he could easily turn everyone's life into a living hell. That's when you know you've written a great antagonist.
Also it makes no sense without context why YHVH can be killed in both SMT2 and SMT4A, though it makes more sense if you know the secret SMT lore that all gods, monsters, and demons in SMT, including YWVH, were all created by humanity's subconscious desires and are all mortal, making personas and demons one and the same. There is only one true deity in SMT and that's The Great Will, who is neutral for the most part and gave humanity the gift to create their own gods shaped by their beliefs. So technically your fictional waifu could be real in the Amala Multiverse if you and many others believe in her hard enough. Imagine how powerful a demon like Megumin or Zero 2 would be lol. Pyra in SMT6 when?
The Persona series takes place in the same multiverse as mainline SMT in a timeline where YWVH's control over the universe was shattered and all demons were sealed away deep within humanity's subconscious, likely due to time travel. I can't wait to see that plotline played out, and who knows, it might just be in a route of SMT5. IDK haven't played it and haven't been spoiled on it yet.
Wait so is YHVH an avatar of great will/axiom or is just a God who became the "creator" of each universe by basically dethroning other gods?
@@dharamsoni8526 the second option, he fought a war over all gods in all worlds and took the title of main god "creator" for itself in almost all of them, sealing the power of all demons and exiling them to the expanse, but you know that this is just a temporary solution because they will find a way to come back and try to regain or obtain godhood.
@@dharamsoni8526 in fact, the axiom doesn't like absolute things, the great will always tries to put the worlds in a constant state of change an evolution and avoid stagnation at all costs.
Another reason he is designed this that is probably because of his name sounding pretty robotic and might allude to Megatron.
LOL yeah I wanted to mention that, but thought it didn't fit. Everyone I talked with thought the same thing
i dont think its really inspired by megatron. atlus goes for a pretty literaly interpretation of the living machine concept that angels are described as in abrahamic religions. metatron and sandalphon also have similar designs, and it might be a reference to enoch (metatron) and elijah (sandalphon) being one of the only humans that were sent to heaven and made angels instead of experiencing death, so that can be seen as artificially created.

I said it before a month or 2 ago but seriously love your deep dives into this stuff. Researching demon/persona backgrounds- adds a lot of implications to the characters and stories they appear in/with. Glad you're more than 1k now and probably going to reach 10k not far from now. You deserve it. One of the best and only great SMT tubers imo (alongside 3 or 4 others)

Metatron and Sandalphon have always been the beings that fascinated me the most. I know so little about these angels, yet Metatron especially is one of the most prominent beings in SMT (or even Persona for that matter).
Has Sandalphon had anywhere near this level of exposure? I would assume no based off my own exposure to the games.
Originally in the script I didn't talk about Sandalphon because there was so little talk about him, but decided to add what I could after the first revision. He isn't shown very often at all and has equally less information on him aside from some old Kabbalistic texts briefly talking about him. You could learn as much as you could from my video, but there's always more out there! I hope you liked the video
there's honestly not a lot of info about sandalphon, besides it having the same origin as enoch (righteous man taken to heaven and turned into angel). most info about sandalphon isnt from scripture, but abrahamic cultures and books outside scripture, like a lot of angels not mentioned in bibles.
SMT revealing that its humanoid Metatron is mass-produced could itself be an acknowledgement of the official description of Metatron. Rather than having 72 wings and hundreds of eyes and mouths in a single body, SMT Metatron can meet or exceed those values through having more bodies.
Ya know... It would actually be pretty awesome to have a much more eldritch robot Metatron that its able to use his humanoid bodies in a manner similar to the G-Bits from Gundam X.
This would actually explain why angels aren't so fond of humans in smt.
Imagine being a seraph, the highest, strongest type of angel. Then one day, your boss picks a random human from Earth, turns him into the strongest angel ever, and makes *him* your manager.
The fact that humans have the potential to become greater than them is bound to make a few angels upset.

I think the main reason why Metatron is almost always portrayed as a robot may be very simple: His name sounds like a typical robot's name due to the -tron suffix.
Simplest explanation is probably the right one. Makes sense to me
@@Tony4You that being said though, the theme of angels being robotic tools of god is something they definitely picked up on. SMT IV and IV:A have some ouvert references to that. Though I'd still say that's more of an happy accident they noticed after making Metatron

I always thought he was portrayed as robotic because of his name having the popular prefix and suffix for robot names.
All upper angels are robotic, while all lower angels are bondage slaves to symbolize servitude or subservience to Yahweh.
Would love to see a "superboss" Metatron in SMT someday with a design closer to his lore (still love his current look though!), reminds me of the arch's designs from SMT IV.
That would be so amazing. Metatron was always a fan favorite so seeing a bit more of his "true" form would be really interesting

It's been explored by other people, but I'd like to see a video on Lucifer. Huge influence throughout the entire series and I always love learning more about the character. Either way, keep up the great work!

Perhaps the significant differences of Lucifer and Satan in SMT 2 and them being the same in SMT 4
While it is a shame that so many other SMT creators are starting to make the same kinds of videos as you (even going as far as to rip the thumbnail style), fortunately nobody can concisely deliver such engaging and informative lore videos like you can.

Ever since I first saw Metatron's name, my first thought was "Why does an angel's name sound so much like a Transformer?"
I always thought metatron being a robot was symbolic of him always following yhvhs orders with no question or hesitation
I love that you can find scraps of inspiration in just these angel and demon designs but then their dialogue and personalities show how well researched the designers are. Then we get incredible people like you who can do an in-depth look at the lore and help fans get an interest into the same lore that gets the designers excited to create such characters.

In SMT, I always thought Metatron, being the closest to God, was portrayed as robot to represent the complete suppression of free will of those who server God. Incidenlty, I also like the design change of the angels in SMTV, as their metallic heads is a nice callback to Metatron and the complete devotion that God demands from those who follow the Law alignment.
I can see that in the context of SMT. It's definitely a sentiment those who aren't LAW enjoyers feel lol. Never thought the new design of "angel" was a call back to Metatron and the like either, but I can see the connection

Nocturne is always my favorite for Metatron's appearance. I always loved his design ever since my first "SMT" game which is Persona 4 but wow, Nocturne did an amazing job showing how much of a big deal he is without even knowing his lore origin. His presence is really menacing especially when he shot that Fire of Sinai with his menacing laugh.
Hail the Metatron, he who is one with God. Do it or he'll blast you with so much almighty damage you'll wish you did. Nocturne portrayed him so well

Most almighty moves suck when the player uses them so it feels good if you get metatron and start blasting fools.

i think I can give ap retty solid theory as to why Metatron is robotic.
Angel or not "Metatron" sounds like the name of a robot, that's it.
i'm not kidding. when I was playing P5, my first intro into SMT, and got akechi's ultimate persona and read "metatron" I immediatly thought that "oh, a robot".
The only reason I know of Metatron before I got into SMT was because of the Kevin Smith movie "Dogma" where Alan Rickman plays Metatron. His first scene announces him as The Voice of God and he kept joking how nobody knows about him even though he is the highest order of Angels.

Really cool stuff! I remember first learning about him and the Book of Enoch through the El-Shaddai game another person mentioned. It's always interesting to think about people many, many years ago getting into arguments (and probably even fist-fights) over whether a work could be considered true enough to be canon.
Maybe a video on Demiurge sometime? Unless I missed him in another video of yours. Learning about him and Gnosticism and everything was quite a trip!
LOL yeah since the dawn of time people were arguing what was canon is texts. Demiurge could be really interesting too. I'll add him to the list
interestingly enough, Metatron's boss dialogue in Devil Survivor suggests that Messiah Abel would have eventually ascended beyond even his level of power and authority. perhaps Abel might even end up replacing him as God's chief messenger to the human world or even rising to command every angel in every world.
I'd love to see how the people arguing that Overlord Abel is his strongest incarnation would react to *that.*
Overlord Abel is stronger than even Yhvh tho. Naoya stated that Abel was doing pretty good against Yhvh and if he keeps up he will win. Even Yhvh acknowledged his power.

@@jackour8167 except we don't know that for certain. besides, seeing as how God defeated Bel before, and the new overlord has only recently been formed, I doubt it has any real chance of defeating God unless God lets him win.
however, by serving God, Abel would eventually grow to become far stronger than his overlord counterpart could ever begin to imagine.

One of my favorite design choices honestly! Which says a lot since I used to mostly favor more abstract or overly complex designs for angels, but here the classic build really felt complemented by the metalic aspects, as if he was an armor of his own wearing a nation's flag banner as his only garnements!
In Hermetic Kaballah Metatron and Sandalphon are assigned to the "World of Briah/Creation" as the Archangels of Kether/Crown and Malkuth/Kingdom respectively.
In normal people speech they are assigned to the process of creation from beginning to end.

I should also mention that in devil survivor overclocked he and Naoya have an argument if you fight him with Naoya, Naoya, being Cain calls him Enoch
The conversation is just interesting as well as Metatron's role in Naoya's eighth day

In terms of design, Metatron is actually my favorite demon.
I was hoping you would at least mention Metatron's Devil Children design, which while I find it a bit odd. And its not one of my favorite Devil Children design. I still wanted to hear your opinion about it.
I personally love all of his different E-Mail messages in Devil Survivor 1's various endings.
Oh sorry, I usually don't talk about devil children or demi kids designs, but I should probably start at least mentioning them. For Metatron's DC design I think it's relatively interesting, more in line with a samurai almost kabuki look with angelic wings. It's pretty on brand for Devil Children, but it's interesting he has a sword despite him being a scribe. In some artistic depictions he is a warrior so I like it for the game.

Did you know that in Persona 5 (Royal, or at least maybe some specific versions thereof), Metatron's texture changes when summoned during the big fight on the Day of Reckoning?
I want to know more about the Hindu mitology. Shiva, Vishnu, Brahma and their wifes. The 7 Devas of the chakra and their job in there.
Nice video BTW Metatron was, for me, the most important angel of all. And deep inside me told me he is the strongest, most powerful and on top of them. And he is a HUGE inspiration of a Story I am working about. And has a really close relative with my main character as well. Sincerely, one of the best angels I had ever read.

@Dialask Isel New SMT plot elements (that will never happen):
- Instead of playing as a typical Japanese high school boy (not counting Flynn or the Strange Journey protag; idk how old Aleph is since I've never played SMT2), you are the Biblical figure Enoch.
- Instead of being able to pick between Law/Chaos/Neutral/other routes, you're locked into Law pretty much from the start. (Unless someone can come up with plausible plot lines for Chaos/Neutral/other routes)
- Your level cap is in the 60s, 70s, 80s, or 90s (Metatron is usually somewhere in those levels in the actual games).
- At some point, you are in heaven, with the encountered enemies being angels of different ranks.
- Mandatory boss fights include the four named Archangels; maybe some of the other higher-ranking ones too like Seraphs?
- Idk, maybe the ending has Enoch being given a new robotic body while some other stuff (like YHVH doing shady things to human beings?) happens. You know, like typical "things still go downhill for the humans" kind of stuff.
Then again, SMT is usually about making choices so I don't think this might work. Unless someone is more creative/can expand upon this.

I've always found it interesting why Enoch and Metatron's stories are considered non canonical by so many Christians due to early fears in the church and among Jewish scholars that his role as the voice of God could be misconstrued.
Essentially, God's perfection is such that the human mind cannot comprehend or understand him, so in turn if people were to hear God''s actual voice it would kill them from its sheer brilliance and power. So throughout the Bible it is believed that when people heard the voice of God it was really the voice of Metatron (given that he was once human he could understand God and effectively communicate with people) but as stated above, church leaders and rabbis were worried this would lead to people worshiping Metatron as God's equal so his stories and status were swept away by most Christians, Jews, etc.
