To begin, I'm 65... After a lifetime of eschewing slide, I decided to learn some slide/open tuning songs. Levee came first to mind, and it's so easy to 'cheat' and learn from those here on YT. The problem was the broad variances of approaches the YT instructors employed. Very many of them play everything, verses and all, with the slide, and my ears told me that is not correct. It was actually your Zepparella video performance I used for instruction. Ironic that you don't play it in open tuning normally, but I get it. I'm playing a Danelectro 12-string for the song, with the signal split to a dirty and clean amp, and a bit of chorus thrown in for good measure. What a pleasure to find you here instructing that very song. I read your father for many years, it's great to see the next Menn generation's contribution to the art. Cheers! John
Hey, John! Yes, there are SO many ways to play this, and I'm VERY flattered if I was one of the people you consulted when going on your Levee journey. I'd love to hear your rendition! I'm always learning and hearing things better as I grow as a musician. And doing this series is encouraging me to dive deeper. My goal is to share GOOD information, and, as the daughter of a journalist, I really try to keep skeptical, check my sources, and use my ears. How cool you read my dad's stuff! I'll tell him that! :-)
A very generous sharing of knowledge. Every now and then when my old bones are feeling tired, Zepparella's version of this song really cranks up my energy levels.
Gretchen Menn,Thank you and Zepperella, for all the work that's gone into this series. an articulate and considered tutorial.Your love of guitar and music,is inspirational.
So glad I found you... You've inspired me! Lately it seems the music inside me has been fading away. Stumbling upon your videos I found myself entranced and brought back to a place I was beginning to think was gone for ever. Thank you so much!!!!!!
I appreciate your training and education! My husband is a drummer and bought me my first real guitar…2021 Les Paul Trad Pro 5! It is whole new world for us. Thank you for your beautiful music and kindness.
For what it’s worth, thanks to older siblings I have been an Zeppelin fan for 40 years, but it was Zeperella’s cover of ‘When the Levee Breaks’ is what motivated me to learn this song. Thank you!
Outstanding. The Levee is my go-to song when I’m jogging or have a task that’s a drudge. The song keeps me heady down and on task. I can’t wait to try it on 12-string.
9 times out of 10 I pass when I see a beautiful woman with a guitar on RUclips because I think it is click bait. You, my friend, get my complete and total respect. Thanks for being a new guitar mentor to me. I smashed that subscribe button like a BOSS.
I have loved all things Zeppelin since High School and my very first guitar over 50 Years ago. My first guitar mentor was a Delta Blues Man. He played all the classics the old way as they were put down on the recordings. I learned to finger pick right up front. Mississippi John Hurt, Blind Lemon, Bessie Smith, Howling Wolf and Muddy Waters along with Robert Johnson took me for many walks down dark country roads. When I found Zeppelin, The Stones and Clapton I knew I was home. Folks Ms. Menn get it, she feels the chords and the notes in her soul and makes them her very own. She is a very respectable player in her own right, I don't know if she has ever sat down with Mr. Page and traded Riffs but I do believe she would make him proud very much so.
My new guitar teacher is a tiny but amazing fiery red-haired woman !! Her talent is equaled only by her beauty ! I make many people envious, and i'm quite happy with it ! But i must confess that i often have difficulty staying focused on the guitar :)
Ty , you have demonstrated a easy way to play an old classic iconic song from a time when music was real. Bless you. You guys rock, I hope to see you and friends playing in the future. Ty 🙏
You Ladies are Awesome! Thank you all for sharing your talent, both on stage, and here, helping the young, or those trying to learn. I’ve been a fan for a long time, y’all ROCK! I think it’s Really Classy, to share your talent this way-you’re in a great position to inspire those starting out!
I think you' re amazing,I'm 49 and consider myself somewhat of a master of PAGES open TUNINGS...I have a 25 open TUNINGS I've spent my life playing!!! BRON- YAUR,GOING TO CALI,RAIN SONG,etc.....You caught me off guard with OPEN " F" I sat patiently looking over them, wasn't there...lol awesome tuning I'm in heaven".THANKS A MILLION LOVE YOUR LIGHT HEARTED APPROACH.....KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK...JAMES,SCOTT,NICHOLSON,ONTARIO,CANADA
My life long friend turned me on to these Ladies (Zepparella) a while back and ICNFB I'm now taking a lesson from one of them, LOL!! I would guess that Ms Gretchen was not even alive when I saw Zeppelin in '75 & '77 ! N E WAY, YOU ROCK SWEETHEART ! YES YOU DO !
It has been said many times on many videos, access to fantastic videos like this one is simply amazing. Yet another song I struggled with as a youth in the early 80’s. I was close but... now in 5 minutes, i have the riff down. Thanks! Kids these days... lucky bastards
Thank you. You blessed us all with this wonderful display and explanation of the greatest slide song. Now to play it on the porch in a late night rain storm.
Thanks Gretchen you are a great teacher! You definitely pick a more challenging way of playing that song for the live gigs.....one of my many zeppelin favourites. Always loved the trance type rhythm to it ....
Good lesson. Very well explained and easy to see what you are doing. You are a great player and teacher. My compliments as a fellow guitar teacher. I'm going to show this to my students.
Gretchen, your sound although slightly different is just as powerful! Having seen LZ in 1977 I love to rotate your rendition with the original! Your lesson is way ahead of my skills but I love to watch and learn. Thank you for your insight!
Thank you for taking the time to do these lessons! You have motivated me to dust off and pick up my guitar. I can't wait to see Zepparella again in the Bay Area. You Rock!!!
Im new here my brother told me about you.i am bass player and he is guitar player. You are really really good.will you ever play in montreal?or we will visit california.Would it be possible to send you an original but no voice on it.Your opinion would mean alot.
The sustain you get from the LP and amp set up is absolutely amazing. You also got the information across clearly and succinctly. As this has always been one of my favorite songs, I know have no excuse for not trying to learn it. Thanks.
Thank you ,Ms Gretchen ,for your wonderful playing! The covers you have played are just incredible...🔥Perfect done, dear lady!,💪 Kind regards from Russia , Moscow. Svetlana, the biggest music (and, of course, Led Zeppelin!) fan. ☺️😉👌
A great lesson from a great guitarist in her own right. Believe me, anyone who is going to choose to cover/tribute a band like Zeppelin has got to know their stuff. Gretchen makes it clear, that it's not all about technical ability, Led Zep were a working band. Every night it would/could be different, that's what made it exciting and as a working musician she knows that and you adapt and develop as a band. I'll be searching for the rest of the series.
Kudos , Gretchen! I love your instructional method and the assignment is a great reinforcement for mastering the open tuning. I did something similar to that when I learned the Chris Cornell tune, Seasons which is in open F. I then wrote a piece with that open tuning . After completing that, I felt I had a gut-level grasp of open "F". Thank you for the lesson! !!
Words do not do Gretchen the honor she deserves for her talent and ability to teach. Thank you so much for your instructions Gretchen. I can't wait to Zepparella play live. Hopefully at Red Rocks sooner than later. Peace, Just Sam
I found you ladies by luck , I read zepparella and I said , let's have a look see an listen , now I have always been STONES and always had a pull to Zep and I have heard alot of people do or try to do and they always have been a bit off , well let's just say I was in all , when I heard you ladies light it up , could not believe what I was hearing , you ladies are just wow , all I can say is , look out Jimmy & Robert , omg , never heard any one hit it spot on , hats off , so fantastic , great style and sound , beautiful just beautiful
My electric has issues staying in tune with open F. This lesson is the only one I've found (out of dozens) that is correct in standard tuning. Keep on rocking in the free world (now) Mrs Gretchen!!
Great job on this video, Gretchen! Thanks for your thoughtful break-down of the different riffs and tuning variations. I can remember trying to learn "Levee" in F#m from the vinyl record, and finally giving up. I knew that Pagey wouldn't have made it all that difficult to play! As soon as I saw the third part, that you call a bridge, the light bulb came on over my head! I'm so glad to have found your instruction videos. I think that all young players should learn the Zeppelin core catalog; they set the standard for rock guitar as we know it today. I remember what a big splash Zeppelin made when they first started out. After the Beatles movie, everyone wanted to play guitar and be in a band. There was lots of different types of rock music, and some was pretty weird. But Zeppelin raised the bar, so to speak, that standard for competence, that many groups had(or had gotten away with) for playing. I can remember seeing Jimi Hendrix on a TV talk show, saying he didn't get Led Zeppelin(he did say that he liked the guitar player for the Burrito Brothers). I think that he meant that Jimmy Page thought like a producer, when coming up with songs like "Ramble On" and "Good Times, Bad Times," and the "light and shade" were part of the design of the song. Anyway, great job, and keep up the good work! Thanks again.
How wonderful to see how the favourite songs are played. So I am going to give it a try. You are a good wonderful teacher Gretchen. Thank You Marvellous
Thank you so much Gretchen this is an amazing lesson I cannot wait to see the next lesson this was really a great lesson and will help my playing skills I’m a huge fan of yours, zeppelin and zepparella ❤️🎸 you’re a really great teacher again thank you all for taking the time to set down with us and and teach us your amazing skills 💜💙
Thanks for the great lesson for this iconic song! I'm really glad you learned (and taught) this in standard tuning since that makes it easier for me to get around to practicing it!
Thank you Gretchen , very helpful. I've been playing it in standard tuning all along because I didn't know what the tuning was Ha ! Keep being the beautiful badass that you are , love ya ! PEACE 🎸🌹
Great lesson and great chatting with you last week. Gonna add this tuning to my Variax so I can try this song with both standard tuning and open tuning on the same guitar and switch tunings with snapshots on my Helix. Thanks for the tutorial!
Thank you Gretchen for keeping the music alive of one of the greatest bands of all time. You are a remarkable guitarist and your band is one of the best Zep covers I have seen. I would love to see you ladies LIVE and loud. Any upcoming tours to San Diego?
This is the first song that I have heard by you band all thoughs few years ago. Was blown away by it, and still am! Opened tuning is scary to me, because if I want to wander off into the cosmos on a solo, I find it almost inevitable to get lost. But with standard tuning, I'm all good. I soooo love your work and your band!

Where have you been all my life, I never could find a good teacher for learning songs, without the B.S. I have found you. Lol keep lessons coming. Could you pls. Talk sum about you rig, amp, and settin. Thanks soooooo much
Gretchen Menn is a legitimate guitar god. Her individual work is awesome & I recommend everybody check that out. Thank you for an awesome lesson.
Aw, you made my day! Thank you, from the bottom of my heart!!!
I want to see Gretchen and Tom Morello jam together. In the 60's we'd say "they proceeded to tear that hotel down!"(
Love zeperella
Guitar Goddess!!!!!
Goddess not God.

Gretchen, this was really great. Thanks! Bonus points for the use of the underutilized "persnickety".
Ha! It just kind of came out... I was hoping it didn't sound too douchey... hahaha!
Ty , you have demonstrated a easy way to play an old classic iconic song from a time when music was real. Bless you. You guys rock, I hope to see you and friends playing in the future. Ty 🙏
If I were to want you to autograph a steel dobro slide guitar, how could I ever get to? Love your playing. Sincerely. 🤘

Hey, it's a mean and moody song... I'm cracking up thinking about how out of place it would be if I were all grinning and smiley. hahaha
Love this awesome guitarist!🎸
Thanks for doing this series on LZ. You are a great player and teacher. Us amateurs truly appreciate you.
Sure like the way you give various options playing this song. TY and I thank my YT algorithm for sending Zepperela my way!
Thank you so much for taking the time for showing all of us this and breaking it all down!!...great...thanks!
Hi ya, I just stumbled across your feed here and it’s such a good tutorial. Thanks for sharing your work 😊🤙
One of my fav Zeppelin songs. Great job - you are fantastic!

Thanks Gretchen, brilliantly taught and great to get the perspective of a gigging musician.....and you said persnickety! 😊
Haha! My geekery slips out sometimes... I'm sure there will be more of that, though I do try to keep it in check.
Wow.. what an insane amount of brains, beauty and talent !!

Nice lesson. I love the way you guys do this song. I hope you keep up the lessons.
Thank you from Australia
This is the first song that I have heard by you band all thoughs few years ago. Was blown away by it, and still am! Opened tuning is scary to me, because if I want to wander off into the cosmos on a solo, I find it almost inevitable to get lost. But with standard tuning, I'm all good. I soooo love your work and your band!
Omg Sheer treat for both ears and eyes.. 3 cheers 😻✨👏
Very well done! Thanks for the tabs in the upper right.
Glad if they are helpful! It was an afterthought, but I'm glad I did it!
Please continue to do so. Very, very, very, (did i say very?) helpful for us novice players!
Really great video and lots of great tips and information. Just love watching Zepparella on RUclips, makes Led Zeppelin fresh again after all these years. Hope to see your band play live one day.... maybe at the Forum where I first saw the mighty Zep so many years ago. Thanks for making this video, I look forward to many more.

Excellent guitar lesson!
Gretchen, you RULE! Thanks for the lesson!

ha ..thanks lady..)..its refreshing to hear a perspective from a 'live" player to learn the lil' "cheats or nuances..(yet not sacrificing the sound of the song) that you use while controlling your "live sound" and all that jazz.. that's important stuff that we all don't get to learn as we aren't all playing out ..thanks. keep 'em comin'
So glad if it's helpful! As you know, a lot goes into delivering a song live... things that aren't always discussed in the teaching component, but I thought could be interesting to some.
Thanks for posting Gretchen. Amazing job on such an iconic driving sound. Keep jammin and sharing!!!! Subscribing now!
Awesome lesson ur a beautiful teacher
Good looks on the standard tuning method . Not all of us can afford the luxury of dedicating one guitar to open F. Great job, great tone too!
nat kingcool All you need is a tuner and you just retune the guitar. Easy enough.
I don't play guitar: But love watching you give this lesson!! TY.
great job live and thank you for the explanation
Great lesson! This might might be my favorite channel now!
Thanks for the tips Gretchen.
This is what I was looking for.
