- Review of the 2021 HP Envy 14 Laptop. A 16:10 aspect ratio paired with a dedicated GPU make this a nice portable form factor. It's not a budget laptop but it's much more affordable then the competiton! A great option for portable video editing or content creators.

Matthew and Dave2D have mastered the art of doing concise yet informative reviews that are all substance with zero fluff; kudos!
Agreed, most youtube reviews, are 10 mins or more, whilst theirs are less than 7, but only focusing on the good stuff and not a lot of banter.
@@ish2222 Agreed.
@@sammyt3514 I like Jarrod's Tech as well... been looking at a laptop ... and have watched videos from all three.

* At 4:20 I forgot to resize the graph bars but all the numbers are accurate for compile times.
Yes, it's Intel but it's priced well and the performance and battery life rock! You can buy it with a GTX 1650 or GTX 1650TI Max-q. Let me know what you guys think below! If you missed my video yesterday, I talk about whether or not QHD gaming is worth it! You can find it here - ruclips.net/video/ycAvjVIiCCI/видео.html
Can you confirm whether the RAM is in single-channel mode on this HP? Also: its annoying that they didn't include a Windows Hello-capable camera... I mean, how much could that add to the BoM? :-/ Having said that, I broke down and ordered the i7 version of the HP, along with a high-spec Razer Book 13, so that I could compare them myself. :-P
Hey Matthew! I was wondering if you could do a review of the Asus Zenbook Flip 15. It's an amazing deal. 11th gen Core i7 - 16gb ram - 512 Gb ssd - Gtx 1650 maxq for 1149.99 USD on Best Buy. Which is even less than this Hp ENVY. I feel like it is a killer deal, maybe too good to be true. But there is only one review here on youtube. It would be much appreciated
What if you compare this thing to the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 GA401QM?
@@DickVanPaiton - They're Apples and Oranges. The G14 is much more of a gaming / content-creation device. The Envy 14 (which I ended up buying) is much more of a productivity laptop that can handle some mid-tier gaming. [Note the lack of webcam on the G14, the thinner chassis on the Envy, etc.]
nice to see the m1 hype finally die down.
its good, but it has its pros and cons and there are equally good laptops out there.
the m1s do not blow everything away like some channels promote.
It does actually. Windows ultrabooks still are no match against MacBooks when you compare unplugged performance.
In fact, Unplugged Load + Mac OS is the whole reason why so many people buy them.
@@mini9503 i never said they were, this is true even with macs with intel, i have macbook pro intel, especially those with dedicated graphics.
I have no disagreement, both have pluses and minuses as to why people buy them.

@@Tigerex966 Your comment was about Apple's M1 chip vs presumably 15W ULV SoCs from other manufacturers.
In this regard, yes the M1 "hype" is very true.
Hypothetically if M1 was commercially available for other laptops and optimized for other OS and their hardware, it would still come out on top in performance and power-efficiency.
Apple's direction to engineer and design MacBooks' hardware a certain way vs other laptops is a whole other discussion entirely.
@@mini9503 No its not, there are a ton of things that make a laptop besides putting a iphone chip inside.
sure it is faster at somethings with 8 cores and slower at somethings, it depends on software dsp chips gpu ram, speed of ports for egpu ssds, monitors, amound of deidacated ram to that gpu or cpu and options for dedicated gpus ad ram and ssd upgrades after the sell.
@@Tigerex966 almost everything is better
The only con is macos because that's personal preference
Great review, Matt. I liked the way that you really highlighted the strengths of the Envy without ignoring the weaknesses - putting it all into context. This is the analysis that brings me back - it's very much appreciated.
You’re very welcome!
i just got the i7 1165g7 version with 1650ti and 16gb ram..
IT RUNS !!!!!!!! i love this notebook..
full aluminum casing, feels very high-end and reliable
I want to buy it , do u recommend it ?
Again, speakers on the bottom so the can fire into my legs and be muffled... when will they learn?
Hello everyone! :D I hope you stay safe and have a nice day, God bless you!
paying $1000+ for a laptop with an i5 in 2021 feels like a scam
The thing is, this isn't a gaming laptop. Ultrabooks always have lower specs but better build than gaming laptops around the same price.
If you want better specs, meaning more powerful components for your money, go for a gaming laptop.
The new i5 is much better and not everyone needs the cpu power . And it have a Dedicated GPU so i guess its perfectly balanced. But u could get Gaming laptop cheaper. Still its Ultra Book and Hp gives good deals so i think it will be worth it for the right users.
@@why_tho_ If you wanted great performance and decent efficiency you'd buy a ryzen(atleast 6cores, which would be the same ish price maybe lesser ), if you wanted decent performance and great effeciency you'd buy Apple m1(can't beat 20hour battery life). If you wanted a gaming laptop you'd buy a gaming laptop(1650 is trash). 1000$+ laptops with an i5 are just not worth it for almost any use case.
even 11th gen i5 beats 11th gen i7 in many tests
it has GTX1650 in a slim chassis
First view. Love you Matthew. When are u going to review the 2021 Legion 5?
Thanks man! Hopefully soon = )
When it comes out lol
In 2006 I've bought a laptop with a widescreen, that year almost all the widescreen laptop is with 16:10 aspect ratio, in 2010 I've bought a laptop with 16:9 aspect ratio, and now in 2021 we have more screen option 16:9, 16:10, 3:2, I predict 16:10 screen will dominate laptops in 2021, maybe next year we have 4:3 aspect ratio like a laptop in the early 2000s?
My first laptop ever was the very fisr Gen Envy 14 in 2010, and its still working!
I am selling mine for 799 have barely used it. it is still under warranty. it is a great laptop I just can't live without a numbers pad.
Question: why do they name it 16:10 and not 8:5?
Still think I'll go with the Flow X13, it does cost a little more but comes with a far better Amd cpu, 4k display, the screen flips to be a 2 in 1 which is so useful, has a touchscreen and has the option of adding the pci-e external gpu later on if needed.
GREAT DEAL FOR ME WHO DREAMS A DECENTLY-POWERFUL LAPTOP.
Is a 16:10 or 3:2 display also better for Lightroom? When it comes to space/size of the image you edit … Does someone know that?
I'm so glad 16:10 is becoming mainstream.
My dumbass tapped on it thinking it was a time stamp
really accurate review but i think the tightness of the hinges and not being to open it at all easily makes loving it really hard, and having used a MacBook air the envy doesn't feel so portable or built to last long in comparison
Yeah my sisters envy hinges didn’t even last 3 yrs they broke and the screen is extremely wobbly.
@@ios759 thats unfortunate that the hinges came off of your sisters hp. Im thinking of returning mine, because the built quality just isn't it. Like i have been getting really annoyed by the stiffness of the top lid and I'm worried that the way the top lid has been designed to allow for better airflow (with a little more space between it and the keyboard) might ruin the display if i carry it in a bag where other stuff could push against it and cause the top lid and keyboard to be cramped. For this reason -- it might get destroyed while carrying it around in a bag --i don't think its a good laptop for remote use, which is kind of why I need it and is really important to me. What do you think? Should I be concerned about it not being good for remote use or am I worrying for no reason? Any insight would be appreciated :)
@@mahnoorkhan7845 did you end up returning it?
@@suhasrao4324 no. I was very much on the fence, but at this point i had opened and returned too many laptops, so i settled with the hp. I don't regret it, becuase its a solid computer all around, but i still have my reservations about the hinges, portability, audio problems, and even the 1.5mm key travel can feel like a bit much.
@@mahnoorkhan7845 does the display wobble too much?
Bro! Ur videos are legit!✊🏼
The 15" variant is the better deal as of now. Currently, at the same price, you're getting a bigger screen, bigger battery (80+WH) a 1650Ti, and the possibility to upgrade the RAM and storage.
4:26 this chart is confusing
16/10 dedicated graphics ports upgradeable sad 16gb standard trades blows with the 8 core m1 air 16gb in many areas, real tb for egpu 2 4k monitors no touch though sd card
12.5 hours of battery? That's awesome
Without WiFi on
Based on what you are using for.
I think HP do better work in their Envy line-up rather than spectre line-up
@@HermannTheGreat yeah but the spectre line completely lacks amd processors
If it had amd I'd buy a spectre in a heartbeat
It would be cheaper as well but for now I'm sticking to my envy 15 x360
@@HermannTheGreat I am also a fan of spectre x360 but I am talking about Price to performance factor
I have a quick question, will the Lenovo Legion 5 Pro be sold in the United States?
Yes, it's coming to US
@@Dizastermaster. thanks
Quick question: How's the camera?
I'm fairly sure that the vents on the top deck are for exhaust. The fans are more to the middle, and the back looks like it has perforations aligned with them. They wouldn't be able to suck air from the top edge, bring it down to the middle, and then blow out at the.... bottom? Cool air comes from the bottom and hot air goes out the top. Otherwise it's a terrible design on HP's part.
Hi Matthew
Is this laptop good for Aftereffects as well? Its 16 gig RAM but I'd prefer a 32 gig to be on the safer side.I'm a video editor...I dont like the Envy 15 cos its too big..I want a cute laptop like the Envy 13 or 14 but which to do After effects.
1080p at 24 fps is nice
But are there any chance of making 60. Fps mainstream
It doesn't makes sense tho
But watching smoothness is just nice
I used a 120hz display for the first time and it was so damn nice
So i feel like videos should be 60 too
No point for a video like this with lots of graphs and talking. It just makes the render unnecessarily long for not much benefit. Gaming or sports or cinematic vids should take advantage of 60 though, and they are
@@Dizastermaster. yeah as i said that 60fps wont make sense anyways
But as i have just realised the importance of high frames I just wanna see it
Nothing special
Also those display showcase part is so small that 24 or 30 fps is just sweet spot
Im waiting for HP Omen RTX 30 series laptops. Hoping they announce them soon
Honestly I feel like Mozilla Compile Test is not a good measurement if a laptop is suited for development or not. Most of the time (especially if you're doing web development) that test is overkill. You're not going to compile that kind of code base let alone using the same compiler. I guess what makes a laptop good for the average developer is screen quality and aspect ratio, [at least] decent multi-tasking speed, a good keyboard and touchpad, and battery life.
Excellent review. I really like this laptop.
Do you plan to review the Asus Zephyrus G15?
Is the xps 17 worth buying or is there a better option for the price? Looking for an all around laptop.
If you are looking only for a Windows laptop, then it is really really good, and you won't be disappointed. But if you are willing to spend that much, why not wait a bit and look at what apple has to offer with their own silicon whith the new MacBook Pro 16 which will probably be out late this year or early next year. That could be a good laptop for you.
The graph at 4:20 showing the lower numbers as the bigger bars is kinda janky
Ya i forgot to resize the bars! Numbers are valid though
its not actually 10-11% its 8%
you need to factor in the fact that diagonal length is constant and not the width
How does Envy 14 compare to X360 Spectre 14 ? Which is more powerful, and more quiet ? Did you have a chance to compare them ?
Should I buy a Envy 15 rn ?? For 1500$ or else I should be waiting for future releases??
This does seem to be an excellent deal, and HP often has sales on its website. My only concern is that darn M1 MBA or even Pro make these Windows devices in the M1 MacBooks' price range a tough buy. Now, the 1650 I'm sure will outperform the integrated graphics in the M1, but 8gb of Apple's unified memory will rival the 16gb of this model in performance, and the M1 processor will easily outperform the 11th gen intel i5. This is not to mention the much better screen of the MacBooks, better build quality, better keyboard, better trackpad, better speakers, far better battery life and near silent operation. If I was going Windows, this laptop would be appealing, but like I mentioned, that darn M1 MacBook just makes anything else in its price range seem like a touch choice.
I just want windows
I’m in the process of buying a touch screen laptop. I’m tossing up with the Hp envy 14” i7 GeForce 1650 ti 16gb ram 512Gb vs hp spectre x360 i7 16gm ram 512gb with a GeForce 1650 ti with max q. Is the spectre worth the money or spending less for the envy and still get the same results?
Dedicated Navigation keys( Home/End, PageUp/Down ), Dedicated charging port (360° rotatable + durabler than usb C port), EXTREME convenient placement of ports, all required ports. Makes this a best laptop. Hope to see a Mini LED display & RTX 3070 version of this laptop in this year.
Anyone notice the chart at 4:29 is a bit... hmm
Can you compare this with the Zephyrus g14?
When is this laptop going to be released in EU? Seems like the perfect mix in terms of performance, connectivity, build quality and price.
I asked HP about this. Should be available on their website this coming week.
@@mevluthan4083 thx!
Hi how is the performance, Because Gone purchase it for using Matlab for my research work
I'm debating this and the HP Sectre 14" - which would you recommend and why? :)
This one is crispier in terms of looks. The spectre is ugly. 2 in 1 design kinda sucks(I have a envy x360) and the nice crisp silver look is much better. Plus this processor graphics setup is good. I would suggest that you buy this except that it's sold out everywhere. It would probably save you a few bucks without sacrificing anything that matters if you buy this one.
the loudspeaker is surprisingly good
ya it's not bad! Considering it sounds better then the 2 top firing Razer Book 13 speakers
I know I'm a month late to this, but I'm looking for something to replace a 13 inch Surface Book 2. I have the i5 w/ 8gb of ram. Size wise this looks comparable and so does the display. My main question to this is, is this a laptop you could recommend to a Mechanical Engineering student that runs Solidworks and Matlab? My i5 Surface Book struggles and tends to get extremely hot. And if this isn't what would your recommendation be for something powerful, light/portable (for classes), and reliable?
Which will u prefer either envy 14 or 15 ? Hope u can help me out here! Thank u
Not sure this will be released in the UK, but if it was, and was priced close to the US conversion (which it never is) then if someone forced me to buy Intel, then it would be an option. It seems reasonable in price and my only qualms are no Windows Hello (face) and not a fan of plasticky silver and in particular the keys. I would also want at least 2k, and 3k preferably display-wise (AMD are less than this with the same specs apart from the GPU and have 2k).
Hi Hexacris, I have the HP Envyx360 2- in 1 of 14. I was testing the battery and I have noticed that in a best performace it lasts me 3 hrs and 4 hrs in saving mode. Is this normal? It has 5 days of use. I ran the HP test and it tells me that the performance is ok but it seems to me super little even compared to average laptops. At most I used powerpoint, canva, whatsapp and excel.
The ram frequency is 3200mhz while there are 4267mhz ram laptops in the matket. I had a flickering screen issue and ram issue with envy 13t ba100. I had to return it. I feel that hp has a bad quality control.
is it possible for you to check out the intel nuc m15 laptop kit, or anything similar in terms of specs, io, and build quality?
This and the ThinkPad x1 carbon gen 9 are my top two for the year
Great review! anyone know when it will be available in the EU?
Please do a direct comparison with the Razer Book!
Hey I was seriously looking for this review! Envy14 vs Flow x13(without eGPU), which would you recommend? considering btw a larger screen+design and better CPU+2in1
Only question mark for the Flow would be the battery.
Flow X13 wins for me. I'm only getting the laptop - R7, FHD, 1650M, 16GB - which will be around $1,300-1,400.
But I can see the Envy 14's appeal for people who need Intel for software compatibility or TB4.
Flow X13 is much better if you need 8 cores instead of 4, and don't care for thunderbolt.
On the other hand, it's partly made of plastic, gets super hot, and display brightness is meh.
Can you review and Alienware M15r4? Thanks!
Should I go for this one or the Lenovo Ideapad 5 pro 16"?
The upcoming Ideapad 5 Pro 16 for sure. AMD instead of Intel and bigger screen.

glossy :( nothin for the balcony i guess.. what about PD via USB-C?
PLEASE HELP: Envy 14 vs Razer Book 13 i7 + 16gb ram:
I don´t need the external gpu as I´m a Xbox guy for gaming and the price in Germany ist both 1400€.
Pro Razer:
- build quality + look
- keyboard + trackpad
- (i7 performance)
Pro Envy:
- battery life
- speakers are on another level (+++)
- gpu performance
Please help making my decision easier :-(
I wold like it black because of the keyboard problems with light in night. But it look like amazing pc.
Is there any new hp omen with ryzen 5000H ? I'm looking if omen 15 will come with r5 5600H + 1650.
The Razer Book 13 is one of the few laptops outside of Macbooks that can actually sustain their max performance when you’re not plugged in. I don’t think it’s a fair comparison vs. the Razer Book 13, but it might be for some people.
That's not true most windows ultrabooks without a dedicated GPU can sustain their performance on battery.
@@MatthewMoniz The thing is this laptop has a dGPU and it doesn't have a powerful battery. Btw does this laptop have Nvidia Optimus? That might be a little bit of a band aid. I'm not saying this category of laptops shouldn't exist I'm just saying for some people a laptop without a dGPU for this class of ultrathin products would be more suitable, because otherwise some people will pick this up and they'll be wondering why the heck their laptop can't run GTA 5 quite as well as when they're plugged in. Good thing ultrabook APUs don't have trash iGPUs anymore though.
@@MatthewMoniz Max Tech did performance tests between Macbooks and the XPS 13, Razer Book, etc. and every one of them except the Razer Book had some degree of performance lost on battery, even the XPS 13 which doesn't have a dGPU. Now some might say it's not that big a deal if you're seeing only a ~5% drop, but I say any decrease in anything when you're not plugged in creates this urge in your subconsciousness to plug in your laptop. I'm not a fan tbh, but maybe it's the Apple fanboy in me. Even Macbooks with dGPUs can sustain their performance on battery (tbf, that's because Apple puts midrange, less powerful dGPUs in their laptops to be able to pull that off, but them getting some exclusive GPUs from AMD with HBM memory has helped them a great deal, like the 5600M which, even though that GPU draws ~50W, it reaches RTX 2060 levels of perf.).
Hi is the hp envy 14 i7 (2021) pen compatible like the hp envy x360 i7? Or is it just touch compatible?
i would like to know if there are any versions available like different RAM size or integrated graphics
I’m gonna be going to college, I’m just going for buisness, you guys think this computer will be fine?
yup
Is the panel touch, or do you have to upgrade that?
if this just had Windows Hello IR, it would be nearly perfect. I know, HP has the Spectre, but I MUCH prefer the aesthetic of this machine to the Spectre lineup plus this has the discrete graphics whereas the 14" Spectre does not.
fingerprint is fine but ya Windows Hello face would be nice too!
And a 2.8K OLED option and stiffer hinges.
i belief you forgot about the asus zephyrus x13 and g14
both have much much power and about the same price
What CPU should i chose for programming n coding, Intel or Ryzen CPUs
My only nitpick is that HP's design language kind of looks a bit too Macbook-y to be a coincidence.
Lenovo has some really interesting designs on their Yoga line-up. I also like the darker gray, gunmetal finish.
Asus Zenbook's also have some really nice finishes too.
Even Acer's Concept D have some Fisher-Price looking white finish that's at least different.
HP just gives you this old-school silver stuff. I wouldn't mind some black like on the Omen line-up. Or anything, really. Their current design just looks like they're hoping to steal some potential customers looking for a Macbook and sees this instead.
So, I bought this one.
Good:
-has 2 coolers
-metallic
-good minimalistic design
-good screen which is the main reason i bought this laptop
Bad:
-feels like made of tin which is in fact(
-display lid wobbles like spring
-keyboard squeeze under typing
-it all reels kinda all fragile and not-so-robust as mac book air m1, for example
-stupid keyboard layout with right keys column is super annoying, many typos errors
- silver keycaps is dumb solution. Very inconvenient
-clickpad with terrible plasticky click
-bios menu is very, very poor and lack of power management settings.
Plus you get a touchscreen laptop, can use it as an IPad, has a 4k option nd 400nits, has 3X more RAM than M1 Mac, and 2-4X more Storage Capacity. It’s a W laptop in my book.
hmmmm what should I take ENVY 14 (*at a price of 1099 € aka 1323 $*) with an i5-1135G7, 16 gigs of ram, 512 GB ssd and its dedicated graphics card that can't do thaaaat much on that size of a laptop (60 hz screen, not that much vram) or an ELITEBOOK 845 G7 (*at a price of 1199 € aka 1443 $*) with a Ryzen PRO 4750U, 16 gigs of ram, 1 TB ssd and the possibility of swaping ram and stuff... but no dedicated graphicscard...
Please someone help me T_T I dunno what to do ... since both a pretty attractive and both got its undeniable advantages and disadvantages

Can you please do review for thinkpad T14.... Please.
Do you guys have any recommendations for PC laptops with a 7 year lifespan?
What type of laptop? For thin and light laptops, Honestly the MacBook Air M1 is one of the best deals, you out the thermal pads on it and then use a laptop fan below it. Or this HP envy on windows side.
For gaming laptops, whatever has a Ryzen 5 4600h or Ryzen 7
How much did they pay you to only compare it to intel laptops?
0:14 bs how and when was this config 1500?
Config is $1289 on the hp USA website.
Wow, then I'm being ripped off. In Europe this config is 2500+. My heart skipped when you said 1500.
I’m beginning to think that only asus have an AMD laptop line this year
Love your reviews... But your volume is recently low. Lower than all other youtube videos I watch.
How does it run as a gaming machine?
The font on the keyboard really bothers me
U deserve 10M subs
For $1000 I would rather get the M1 Mac Air although the dedicated graphics seems tempting
Thermals are good?
Yup!
when will it be released?
Thank you for making the comparisons of other higher-priced laptops but...
Something about Razer's laptops and how awesome they look just makes me want to get that instead.
Oh ya for sure the Book 13 does look better but the HP Envy 14 is not ugly either. Just a lot better value
This but x360 and touchscreen please!
