This is a Motormouth couple car review of the 2021 Porsche 718 Spyder. The Spyder is a special car in the Porsche lineup, it has the same powertrain as the track-focused Porsche GT4 but is a convertible with a unique manually folded roof. The rear design of the 718 Spyder also has an elongated rear deck, with accent bulges, plus extra rear aero along the bottom diffuser. The power plant is a 4L naturally aspirated flat 6 engine with 414 horsepower and 309 lb-ft of torque.The Porsche 718 Spyder will do a run in 0-100km in 4.4 seconds. Top speed 301 km/hr You can get a 7-speed PDK dual clutch, a Porsche double-clutch transmission - $3,660, a base 6-speed manual is the base transmission. Porsche recently introduced the 718 Boxster GTS with the same 4.0L 6-cylinder but with a bit less power. This might be the car to get if you don't like having to deal with the manual rood each time you take it down or put it up.

I bought my 981 Spyder last year shortly before your review. I’ve since watched it several times because it always puts a smile on my face. Just loved your description in that video, “auditory orgasm!” The newer one is still awesome, but it’s too bad the 718 doesn’t quite coax the same joy outa you.

Damn that just looks fantastic a perfect balance of style and performance. We bought my wife a Mini convertible in a similar colour Blue. She had to be be pushed into it, but every time I see her coming home with the top down and her 80’s music playing I smile from ear to ear 😀😀😀 and remind her that’s why I said to buy it….

Great review Zack and Andrea. I absolutely love the Spyder. Personally, the mid engine layout makes it the better sports car compared to the 911. Amazing how well the values of held up even with the first generation.

Thanks very much for your great FUN review of this truly beautiful and unique Porsche. I'll go with Zack on the 6-speed. The PDK is a wonderful transmission however the Spyder is virtually MADE for a manual. Drive it like you stole it!!! You two make a superb team. Keep up the excellent work!

Superb response to that gear ratio question. It’s so overblown because of RUclips. I’ve been enjoying the 981 GT4 for many years now, and the gear ratio is a non-issue. Thanks for the review!

The long gear ratio is an issue for a great number of owners.
@@ArnoldWinters Probably watching too much RUclips videos. 2010 911 GT3 second gear also tops out at 130km/h (80mph), no one complained back then. I'm not sure why it's an issue now on the GT4.

great review. I love my 981 Spyder that I bought a week after you reviewed the 981 Spyder. Even in Southern California, I never see another Spyder. Way more GT3RS's than Boxster Spyder

Andrea and Zak....Great review on 718 Spyder btw, but please don’t criticise it for not holding your silly huge coffee cups. You really shouldn’t be drinking coffee on the go in a car like this....and please don’t take it to a golf course either 😱
Also, the roof is so easy to use if you own one. I really enjoy the manual process. 30 secs max, up or down. You made it look difficult which it isn’t

I was looking for a 2016 Boxster S in Red in Florida with the 6 cylinder however the new Nissan 400 Z looks very very tempting...as it's the leaked MSRP....Andrea you wear that Boxster well, it suits you. I really enjoyed the review and your perspectives. I thought long and hard about a 718 Snyder/GT4 and GTS. Built one online several times, but when the C8 Corvette was announced I kept goi,g back to it. I ordered a C8 and it’s pretty loaded for just under $75K/US. I know the Porsche is smaller and lighter abs has a higher rev limit, but the C8 has better tech and I prefer the look.
I was surprised you didn’t bring up the C8 as a competitor, especially with the retractable hard top option.

we couldnt find a fair priced spyder and dealers are asking 20-30k above sticker. We just bought a gts 4.0 as a 7th car, at sticker! exact same color as your review with red interior. I also prefer leather but few can argue the spyder looks apart with those humps and front bumper...what a gorgeous car. But I couldnt justify 30k above for a car that isnt thattttt special in the 150-160 range, that's almost my miami blue gt3 kinda money (even tho the gt3 is more like 210k today). Great review btw!
How is the ride quality compared to the GTS?
Gorgeous car and an incredible color. If not for the fiddly roof, would’ve gotten this, but instead I’m contemplating a GTS 4.0. Would like to know if this is Gentian Blue or some other color. Thank you.

You are right about the redline. I have a 986 and never take it to the redline.
How does this (Boxster) compare to the 718 Cayman?
Great review, fantastic car! if they made it in the Dark cherry with saddle interior or second choice Gentian blue with saddle it would win easily! it will be one of my final 2-3 cars but the lack of interior colors leaves door open for Corvette and Lotus!

My Carrera’s top has two handles (clips), and is down in literally seconds. And it is, as Zack says, quite slow ... by today’s standards. But you use most of it and rewarded with smiles. I do like today’s Sypder. It is definitely fast and sexy. But it is awfully expensive and still doesn’t have the presence of a proper 911, despite costing $130,000! My Spyder doesn’t just turn heads, it elicits compliments when parked, “Nice car” being the most often. THAT’S PRESENCE.
@@clu4u I hate to use the term on such a beautiful car, however the 911 is "common" compared to a 718 Spyder. Most folks have never even seen the latter. And when they do...they're generally pretty awestruck. It's a truly unique Porsche.
Still lots of parts of the Autobahn that are unlimited, even though there have been more and more stretches where limits have come in. I buried the needle on my BMW every time out except when on winter tires due to speed rating. ;)

The neutered sound is just down to the gas particulate filter as the main contributor, the cylinder deactivation can manually be fully shut off so that isn’t factoring in. I think the 981 even with those solved for still sounds better. Unfortunately.
Yeah OPF pipes and clicking the auto start/stop off will fix all that
I now put my roof up and down each time I drive it as long as it is not raining. I still prefer a power roof, however, you can't have everything.
You need a second car if you're a golfer. I wouldn't get a smaller bag. Carry on with your great reviews.🥶

It depends what you value. The 718 is lighter and handles better. The 911 is more GT in comparison (within the realm of sports cars that is. It's not an S-class coupe). IMO, the 911 looks better and has better acceleration.

IMO - Sports cars have 3 pedals on the floor … also the resale value will be significantly more with the manual
Totally disagree on the redline. In my 987.2 the 2nd gear tops out at apx 110kph at 7400 rpm and I usually hit that at least once a drive. That means that legally I get bang off a 1st and 2nd redline shift. On a 718 4.0 I could only do 1st.
If I wanted, and could afford, a 4.0 718 I’d spend the 10k (or more?) on Sharkwerks shorter gearing.
Sharkwerks only changes out 3-4-5 gears, not 2nd. Go figure. Costs $12k, you get a sport clutch, too.
Besides the sound is there any other aspect you think the 981 spyder is better than the 718 spyder?
Used prices are still very strong so they were a good buy

Yeah. This is a weak review. The Spyder is a race car for the road. It’s not designed to function or ride like a Lexus.
You may not like the word 718 Spyder but I think it sounds better than saying boxter

Porsche ALWAYS hobbles the Boxster and Cayman. Before it was no limited slip, then they screwed the engine (and after sales tanked reversed) now they screwed the gearing. It's not that they couldnt regear, they did the same thing with the PDK as well. Its an amazing car but for the price, there should be no compromises. Period.
I'd love to pick up the Boxster GTS but the looong gearing gives me pause. I drive around the city a lot.
Could be the best way to spend $100k on a car. I actually just built one on the website the other day (though not the Spyder). Manual. NA. Lots of power. Brilliant handling. Now I just need to find $100k 😍

You can speed up the roof process by doing things in the fastest order.
This is less complicated and high tech than a 911 . This is exactly what the 911 used to be. For me , I'd personally take this over a 911 for a daily driver. I'm writing this while watching and you just said there's no Android auto. Scratch what I said. Let them sell it to an iPhone owner. I won't switch and there's a ton of fast cars to buy out there that have what I want.
Remember that some cars have to reviewed within the context of their creator’s intent. The roof commentary was agonizing. This is GT department creation, they care about going fast and the roof was designed to cut weight. For Porsche high performance and special cars, they hit their performance targets first and comfort and convenience comes second. If you want the lesser car with a push button top, get the 718 Boxster, not the 718 Spyder.
Get the GTS 4.0
Had a Mustang GT. Same 2nd gear issue. Totally illegal at redline. And I agree - who cares? It was still an awesome car.
I've had my Spyder for a little over 1 year now. I really detest roof, however, I can get her down it about a minute. I would prefer an automatic roof like I had in my 07 Boxster S. Anyway great review Andrea & Zack. Keep it up!
