Let’s be honest - this is the best car Porsche makes today.
Yeah i dont like how its always called a baby 911. I mean the basic 911 is slower than this thing and less sporty.
Cayman gt4
"Best", maybe. Best performing, no.
You may need to have a think on that after tomorrow's episode:)
MotoManTV
I’m on notice. 😉
Love my 718 Spyder too. I have owned 4x 911’s 991.2/991.1/991.2 Targa/992.1 C4S and a 981 Spyder and this is the very best Porsche I have ever owned
Why so?
No, no you don't need a 911, my 718 Spyder replaced 911's and theres no turning back, great review Mr MotoMan
Roger Bailey
I have a manual Cayman GTS (my second) and my GF a PDK 991.2 Carrera S.
Such different cars to drive and it’s amazing to have the choice, but the chassis and gearbox in the GTS, make it so much more fun to drive. Even if the 911’s envelope of performance is overall wider, it’s so imperious as to be dull sometimes at normal fun road speeds.
So I agree with you! The baby Porsche chassis, is the more entertaining (in all it’s many guises)
😀
If you have a child and they are not old enough to ride in the front, then the 911 is the only way to go. I would also say, with the current version of the 911, you can drive it MUCH faster than the 718, where as I think the 718 use to be easier to go faster than the 991.2. Now, I do not own not have I driven the GT4 or Spyder, I do own a 718 Cayman GTS, manual and a 992 C2S with RWS and I feel like I am at least 10mph faster in it over the 718, I also prefer the driving position in the 911 over the 718 but it is a great and fun car to drive!
Tommy
Yes the 992 is another big 911 step forwards!
On a track, the 991.2 still smashes the Cayman for speed!
I just love the 718 as it feels so much lighter and the weight is spread out better. When it does start to move, it is as if it’s one piece.
With any 911, you are always managing either the front / rear.
A challenge for sure, but suicidally fast for the road to the that 992 chassis ‘mobile’
Agreed re the kids though.
Just put a Labrador in the back of ours 😀
Wise choice!
I did the same
I watched every video about this car and this one is the only one that shows the roof mechanism the right way and detailed thank your for this enjoyable video
Watching the double clutching is driving me insane. Why???
Because it’s the wrong way round. Drove me mad as well
Same - just watched this video and the upshifts are cringe
981 Spyder with lower miles are still getting 90,000-100,000 dollars. 982 Spyders are selling for more than new with lower miles. These things are appreciated and wanted.
Motoman, hope you’re recovering well from the accident! Really glad to have you back. Your reviews have incredible flow, writing, and presentation. Definitely the best 718 review out there. Cheers
Thank you, sir . . . slowly ramping up again at work with a long recovery ahead but good to be back!
Why in the world are you double clutching? It is a synchronized gear box.
WR ZL1 seriously right??
Vin Diesel baby!
Богдан Кондратов
Oops! 🤡
It’s exactly the opposite to that that you’ve stated!
His double de-clutch gear changes, create a greater weight shift and more unnaturally punctuated drive.
The synchromesh is there, among other things, to cure the above issue of duration out of gear 🧐
Throttle control immediately preceding a de-clutch, then before re-application is how to control weight transfer.
This is made easier and more fluid, if the elapsed time is SHORTER not longer!
Also a BIG point, is that we need to be covering less distance in neutral.
This is a technique only broken vehicles require, or vehicles from before this fella was even driving.
I live in the UK and have only ever owned manual cars for my 30years of driving.
On road, track and in advanced driving tuition.
Nobody with a clue thinks this is a good idea!
I was wondering the same thing.
Especially he is slow AF with it...cannot stand it ;)
I have owned 8 Porsches, my first being a 1997 Boxster. I currently have a 992 Turbo S which I love. I am tempted to go for the Spyder, but that it is a big decision. Choices, choices.
You’re right about the softer suspension on the 981 Spyder had: it was equipped with the PASM Sport Suspension from Boxster GTS not the GT4 suspension. The 982 Spyder here has the complete suspension from the GT4 including the reverse struts and rose-joints.
pasm was an option. It also came with x71 suspension from the gts.
Wrong, there was no PASM available for the 981 Spyder. It basically has the same suspension as the GTS but slightly modified. It is no GT suspension but still thrilling to drive and a but more engaging than the 718 Spyder suspension.
The styling of a speedster is the reason for the price differential. The silhouette of those humps gets me every time.
Smell the breaks or the clutch? You double clutch every upshift, killing the disks. The synchro is invented last century...
Bold coming from someone who can't spell brakes
🤪
This could be affordable for me by 2040. Can't wait!
I was 72 when I could afford my first Porsche. It was worth the wait.

I've seen many people buy Porsche's only to be faced with poor reliability and lots of bills. The worst case was my brother. It was a total bucket of unreliable bolts. The only thing I liked about it, was the day he told me he sold it ... and his bank account has been far better for it.
Just Stuff and 1% of the looks. Sorry, but the Nissan GTR looks like it was designed by a group of bean counters in the 1990s. Oh wait.
It was.
In 2040, sorry, man. You have no no no chance. It will be much more expensive than now. You better sell your kidney today.
@@salangchoi02 Damn, I wonder if I can get the kidney back if I call the other guy now...
Thanks Motoman. A great detailed review as always. You actually get in the car and drive it to experience the steering, handling, shifting, engine noise and response, etc. on proper roads. After having owned different sports cars, including Porsche and Ferrari, I’m looking forward to receiving my Spyder next week. It will be a keeper. What other large mainstream automaker is offering a new mid engine manual NASP convertible. I believe only Porsche. Always enjoy your reviews👍.
Thank you . . . your words mean a lot . . . and you will LOVE your new car.
Good review by someone who actually knows his stuff and the Porsche lineup.
His double de-clutch gear changes make me cringe 🙄
Double de-clutch gear changes, create a greater weight shift and more unnaturally punctuated drive.
The synchromesh is there specifically to cure the above. Used with correct mechanical sympathy that is 🧐

This is arguable on of the best gearbox / clutch implementations ever. It’s best used as designed.
So glad to see your remarks. Watching this guy changing gears was irritating to say the least.
Plus it has an autoblip function.
Well...Motoman can take heart that his followers are true enthusiasts! I posted a comment too about the shifting, it drove me insane.
Agree!! This guys is a goofball!
Why no mention of the car’s biggest flaw - the tall gear ratios?!
This car is for you Motoman. In the spec that you specified of course and not in this dull black on blue. I would rather have this than base 911. And as you mentioned I have a hunch that this is a future classic with the GT touches.
I wonder why you double clutch everytime you upshift
Coz Americans never learned to proper drive manual cars... and it‘s Murcia...
@@SirMopy he's greek
Yes I noticed that, he makes a right meal out of changing gear, it should be one nice smooth throw
Me too, and then he doesn't heel and toe??? Clearly not a racing driver.
Looks like RUclips is running free ads for Creepy Joe
Cristopher Reeves that makes no sense
The 981 has been the better car since its introduction. The 911 got fat with the 997. The only thing wrong with the 981 was the power. They fixed that with the spyder. Same deal here. Its a great car thats why it holds its value.
I was in this same predicament. Had a deposit on a GT4 but for the money ($100k+) I could have a Carrera instead. So instead of spending $114k as specced on a GT4, I went for a $118k sticker Carrera T for 30% off sticker. I haven't looked back since. I'm sure the GT4 is great, but it's not $20k+ better than a slightly used 991.2.
They are totally different cars in terms of handling, feel-everything. The GT4 mid engine design is perhaps the best handling car, very flat around corners and nimble-it’s like the 911 used to be. Today’s 911s are more like grand touring cars-heavier and less nimble with less capable handling than the GT4. After all, you can’t cheat physics! Just depends on what type of driving experience you want.
I have a 991.2 targa gts manual which I LOOOOOOVE (as I know you do too). Now that kids are starting to get old enough to ride in front or be on their own.. a two seater like this sounds. Pretty sweet (literally). Agree. Gentian blue with grey checkered seats is the right choice. Or silver with red interior.
Just placed my order for a Spyder PDK today. Had the 981 Spyder so wanted to mix it up a bit with the PDK this time.
How is it. Just got ours and it’s in detailing , we are also in the midst of a snow storm. Picking it up end of next week. I picked the PDK because I heard so much grief on the manual. How is the PDK?
That last clip looked like PVdriveE switchbacks in SoCal. Thanks for sharing. Like your taste in Blues/Grey/Black contrast.
I’m in the car creator right now, drooling over a chalk grey Boxster Spyder with black wheels, a red soft top with red/black interior.
Best looking modern Porsche
Splendid review MotoMan! Hope that your recovery is proceeding as planned.
Double clutching on upshifts...
Paid my deposit on a 2021 Spyder. Have 4 weeks to lock build. My blood is a-boil with imagining the options
Me too
@@brianmacklin262 I locked my build yesterday. Went with all my first instincts, only one frivolous addition. Aluminum fuel cap.
Went all black & Silver, as much leather as available.
One of my favorite Porches. That blue exterior is a must have. I agree that having a gray interior would be a better choice than the black. I’ve been waiting for a long time for you to review this car again. The last review was from 2016 I believe in Hawaii. Stunning car then and even more so now. I would definitely consider this over the 992, but you can’t go wrong either way.
Appreciate the depth and details, especially about the GT division specific design. Great video as always!
George. Traveling to Colorado Springs in a few weeks to FINALLY collect my 718 Spyder. And it has check papita seats!! Sadly, my allocation never came up but I was able to find a car spec’d to my liking. The sacrifice. White with black interior versus gentian blue with red. Alas I’m happy as can be.
In this market . . . well done! Send pics when you collect her.
If hardo 911 geeks were being honest with themselves, they would say that the 718 is the purest driving machine Porsche currently manufacturers, and the ‘20 Cayman GT4 is one of the greatest driver’s cars they’ve ever produced.
pure doesn't mean perfect, 911 are imperfectly good, the unique setup in its own realm.
Gears are still too tall, but is probably the best manual sports car you can buy. Beautiful!
2:10 nice double clutch catching the right RPM after a blip for the gears that are slower to move the shifter to. In most Porsche 6 speeds, it seems like 5th especially is spaced too close to 4th ratio wise (and without being in the middle of the H pattern spacial wise) to get into the gear before the RPMs drop too much (when you're not revving much past 4krpm before upshifting). I'll have to see if that makes 4-5 upshifts at normal driving RPMs less rushed for me. The Aisin synchros are also consistent enough where you can remember how much force needs to be applied to have the shifter complete its movement right when the RPMs are matched.
thanks MotoMan your video put me over the top. A Guards Red is on order. I hope your running is going well and you are fully recovered
That ragtop would shed me tears
Great review, which furthered reinforced my decision to purchase one. I purchased a Gentian Blue PDK version in December 2021 and it will be delivered here in south florida May 2022.
Great review as always thanks for the fun. Are you just showing of with double clutching LOL. Best looking car on the market special for the price. Speedster humps, manual, 4 liter N.A. Engine 450 hp omg what not to like. Even the roof looks stunning. Color is stunning as well, although my fav is the Miami blue oh well i take any color if i can get one at the Porsche dealer.
Great video. Just a small correction. The rear diffuser and the vent at the front are not, "active aero," but rather, passive aero components.
The front vent is also there to vent the central radiator which lesser Boxsters don’t have
Nice overall review. PDK version now available. Double clutch if you want, but one of the really special things about this car is the really short throw of the shifter which is not apparent or highlighted in this review because of the double clutching.
Motoman why are you double clutching? These cars don't need to be double clutched anymore.
So George, it's been two years since this roadtest, and 18 months since I plopped down my deposit. Tick Tock.....still waiting. Fingers crossed. Hoping I EVENTUALLY get to build one for myself. Otherwise it's to the aftermarket which I REALLY don't want to do.
How could you ever miss NYC with those SoCal roads
Motoman, I started DROOLING the minute the email hit my in box. I've got this spec'd up to $128k. That's right. And to that I plan on adding an aftermarket exhaust, $5k and $10k worth of carbon fiber interior and exterior bits from Techart. All tastefully added. Color, chalk! Red roof, and red and black interior with 18 way sport seats. No PCCB, or buckets. But pretty much every other conceivable option, excluding car play. Hate it. Could I get an entry level 992, sure. Why would I?? A fully spec'd 992 Targa 4S is over $200k. And this is a real GT car. And a convertible. Plan on driving this for four or five years, putting like 20k miles on it and parking it for a few decades to appreciate. Can't wait to place my order for a 2021 in October. Dealer has my name on his list already.
After the spec price, was there an additional price added to the car because of the demand for it? I've heard that there may be an added cost.
DC that was just the price on the configurator. $128k
Ordered. I have up to a 12 month wait but who cares. I don’t plan to ever sell this car but will it to my son!!! And the limited production of around 500 units a year, so I’m told, should ensure it’s future value. All smiles!!!!
If I were to spec it. Miami Blue. Carbon buckets with blue/grey tartan inserts or aftermarket recaros in a saddle brown leather. Ceramics. Led lights. Yellow seat belts and door pulls. Bose stereo.
With you on everything except for aftermarket seats . . . LOVE the tartan inserts.
There are no other cars available new on the market that comes in a naturally aspirated, 400+ hp mid engine, 6-spd manuel, convertible package that you can option with carbon ceramic brakes and carbon bucket seats for $125k. This car is a unicorn.
Is that the last hurray of the NA mid engine manual Porsche? Will the next one will be EV only?
Beautiful 718 Spyder!
If you want a pure driver car - that's it!
Do you need a 911? It is now more a GT car - this one is the sportscar oriented Porsche.
I would never have thought we would get one more NA Boxter / Cayman (after the Turbo-4 release) but Porsche listened to their Enthusiasts customers.
Great review George - awesome as always -
THAT car (and your report, thanks) really turned my head regarding the, well, Boxster. As dynamic as the Cayman is it's always struck me as rather claustrophobic in there. This 718 Spyder is a real sports car. They're still around! Yeah, I'd take this over a base 992 Carrera.
Would certainly take this over a base 992.
What's up with the shifting? Just use auto blip. Double clutching is old school lol.
Why let the computer have all the fun?
@@MotoManTV so you don't annoy all your watchers double clutching a synchro lol! Great video besides that and that blue touring you teased....so much need
Perfekt allein ist gut genug: Handschaltung & frei saugender Motor.
awkward shifting, why is that?
because he can
I'd take this car, just as it is now. Perfect color blue :-)
White with black roof. Classic Boxster Spyder!
Dare I say this is the current Porsche "bargain" ? Spec'd correctly may even be a great collectable. Glad this one was finally in the hands and developed by AP & the GT team.
All these GT4 and Spyder videos keep making me think I need to get rid of my Cayman 718 GTS for one of these..........but, I live in the mountains and I have a feeling that going from the FI GTS to an NA will make the car feel very slow at altitude. Now, having the top down as I go through the canyons with that NA engine sound, that is a different story.
Just love looks of 911 Targa
This car sounds tame compared to the 981.
Porsche really shot themselves in the foot going the Henry Ford way with the Spyder/GT4 interiors. It hurts to say it, but Porsche's interiors look stale in black ... Thank God for TechArt.
Can you imagine a Spyder in Miami Blue with matching seatbelts & stitches, stain platinum wheels, a caramel interior & yellow gauges? Mmmmm ....
As to your question, M, I'd have a GT4, send it to TechArt to get the specs I mentioned above and give it the "Touring" treatment.
As much as I like the Spyder, its not really suitable for our climate as a daily driver, having the top up 90% of the time takes away from the coolness of it.
As always, excellent work, M.
Agree with you up until the TechArt part, Amro . . . prefer a car like this factory stock.
@@MotoManTV I understand.
Great review, still glad that Porsche offers the combination of manual transmission and NA motor within their lineup. @motomantv, not sure what I prefer personally between this and the 991.2 Carrera T and was wondering which model did you prefer to drive? Greetings from rainy England.
Between this and a 991.2 Carrera T, this all day long - twice on Sunday. Now before you ask: GT3 Touring. All day long, three times on Sunday.
Did you know the roof and truck can be unlock outside the car with the key fob? you can lock the roof from the outside also.
There’s no checkered seat option, not sure why you think there is.
How does this compare to new Corvette?
I replaced my 991.2 for the 718 Spyder, no regrets what-so-ever, just unplug the exhaust valves and you will hear the engine all the time, not just from 4000+ rpm, gearing is just fine for everyday use in traffic, who wants to constantly upshift to 3rd gear while traveling 25-30mph in the city, those people that complains about it either don't have one or a RUclipsr driving only on the highways.
I'll take the Spyder all day over any modern 911 (they're just plain too big and fat). Make mine Carmine Red please. Thanks Motoman. Two gems in a row (convertible LC 500 & 718 Spyder 4.0).
BOTH of these were VERY hard to give up . . .
Nice one. Enjoyed the review. But definately wont even consider buying one until the PDK and fully automated roof is introduced.
You will be waiting a very long time for the roof as this will never come with the Spyder. The roof is easy when you’ve done it a couple of times, and to me, it’s part of what makes the car so special.
I'm sorry...I have a 2018 GT3 (991.2 manual) in Sapphire Blue. Soooooo, I wouldn't choose either car you mentioned. If however Porsche decides to give me that car (I love blue) I would make the sacrifice. (I am so noble...)
One follow up questions. If you could have this with a PDK, BUT with the shifter that's in a 992 GT3, would you still do the manual vs. the PDK. Please. I'd really, REALLY like your thoughts. TIA.
Difficult. I like PDK and the 6MT. Gearbox and color are the only tough questions imo.
@@skynetsworld I agree. Having a hard time between Chalk and GT Silver. I'm going with the manual.
@@tedkramer1208 👍
Even trade for my Miata... Please! Cool car, but not to keen on the double clutching every up shift.
I always dig the driving portion of your vids, but this one drove me insane. The gear shifting was weird and not-so-smooth, I couldn't focus on anything else.
If I'm buying a 911, it's got to be a Non-turbo. 991.1 perhaps, though I have a suspicion that'd I'd prefer how the 997 drives (but the 991 is so much better looking inside and out). But up against a 992? This. All the way. Which is funny because I'm not even slightly interested in the 4 Cyl 718. I'd rather have a 968 or 944S than a 718 with a 4 cylinder.
Amazing color.
Nice Yak-52 in the background did flew a bit of it in Europe tricky compressed air system but fun ! 😂
Well liked your video on the Speedster too ! 😉
It's a Nanchang CJ6A. There's a Yak 50 on the other side of the hangar.
MotoManTV Yes I was talking about the blue one regarding the Yak-52 I mentioned but it is a 50 woooops...about the engine less one, I thought it could be a Yak-18 (Landing gear) but missed it as you said it is the Chinese version of it. I have spent many years in Russia and few hours on the 52 and it did remind me a bit of it seeing them in the back ground !
Anyway thanks for the information nice planes and nice colors too...
The Porsche is beautiful too I actually have a 2011 carrera S since a few years and I hope to keep it for long I love it !
Love it. Traded my 2016 Boxster Spyder last year for this one. Getting it next month after waiting 11 months. Not happy with the wait but I'm hopeful its worth it :)
Well just got my 2021 spyder and omg it’s just a perfect drive
You will love it!
@@elliotnegrin1079 Yes very happy with the car. Took delivery in Nov. 2020. It's the epitome of what a sports car should feel and drive like.
Feel like this car would've been better had Porsche bore the 3.0 out to 3.6 instead of a 4.0 and raise the redline to 8500+ to keep the same HP rating. They can sacrifice some of the top speed and get the same acceleration time with a taller final drive ratio in the transmission. This will make the car sing even more, stays longer up high in the rev range.
Great review as always Motoman. When are you getting a Speedster?
Incredible machine! .... and I'm a corvette guy.
You loved loved loved the 981 Spyder when you reviewed that. Would you rather the 981 Spyder with the much louder exhaust and the 3.8 L or the 718 Spyder with the 4.0 L and a not good sounding exhaust but it is from the GT dept. Now that is the question.
Would have to go 4.0 with GT bits under the car.
When you shift, the pause in neutral before putting it in gear ... Is that on purpose lol ?
double clutch mate
No Seasoning double clutching to shift to the next gear never heard of it. But ok 👍

On that side of the pond, they think driving a manual car is big and clever / cool.
I think he’s just trying to seem all OG 🤪
Why do you change gear in 2 movements? It lets the rev's fall each time and will just be jerky. Also it's so slow that I don't think it will work with the rev matching which expects a quicker shift. I have a GT3 and it likes nice quick shifts.
The 't' in Gentian should be silent i.e. it is pronounced 'jen-shn'.
i would take anyday a well speced boxster s or gts then a base 911...the gts is the better driving, better looking ,better speced car AAAAND its a convertible to.cant go wrong with this kinda package.
I would choose the 718 over the 911, and in Racing Yellow.
the 9A2 Evo is direct injection .. do we know if it's prone to bad carbon build up on the intake valves?
probably
Motoman, review the GTS 4.0!?
I would take tha3 car...just the way it is. "Keep it blue...keep it true!"
press unlock and then hold unlock to open roof and truck. press lock and then hold lock to lock the roof.
thank your for this enjoyable video !!
Choice: Base 992, Carmine Red - with a white PORSCHE door decal. (Hummnah, hummnah!)
Dear Porsche ,marry me. .wait the shifty is too high by 8 inches for our ideal grab but we forgive that.
Let’s hope that they isn’t a thunderstorm when you try and get the roof on ⛈⛈⛈⛈
What’s with the revving on upshifts?!? Its not brakes you can smell, it’s clutch.
Track days you would want PCCB.
Actually you don't. Then they wear out quickly, because the heat destroys the carbon material. That is why a lot of GT3(RS) ppl who want to track their cars are retrofitting them with steeldisks. On the road however the ceramic brakes can last up to a few 100k miles. There those won't get really hot.
The GT4/Spyder is the Best Porsche on the market! 🤗
Dude, I almost always agree with your comments on interior/exterior color choices! I can understand why dealerships choose to be too safe, but for a press car? (or is this a dealer car you tested?)
Gets worse . . . This is the SECOND one I had . . . BOTH the same color combo. NOTE: The exterior color - stunning . . . Interior: No contrast. Here's the first one from back in November. It was a German market car that was brought in for our @worldcarawards test drives and ended up in a couple of those episodes: instagram.com/p/B4_gd58Ftef/
MotoManTV Oh man, that interior color choice totally ruins the look and intent of this vehicle. Completely understand where you’re coming from. To all those reading that choose this exterior color, take George’s suggestion and please go with a light grey interior, or if you prefer a darker shade, a saddle brown. Trust us, neither one will effect your resale value negatively!
So with the format of your vids - driving, then to a shop, then back to driving. Why not just have the driving portion be continuous?
VERY good question. Two words: Audience retention. Stick on one thing too long, people lose interest and are more likely to click off.
I would prefer a 718 Spyder than any of the top down 911 expect my Targa.
Great car. But now with the new 718 Boxster GTS having basically the same engine as the Spyder as well as a roof that can go up and down in 12 seconds with a price tag that is $20k less, I now know why so many 981 Spyders are for sale right now. Those owners are not upgrading to the new 718 Spyder, they are buying the new 718 GTS for the above reasons.
But it doesn't have the looks, not the GT4 suspension, not the GT4 brakes. And the manual roof is what makes it more interesting. An ape can open the roof in the GTS, but not in the Spyder.
