Rest in peace John. You've always been a great person. You've thought many of us the basics of training and biomechanics. Can't believe you are no longer with us. You'll always be thought of when I train. Thanks for all the tips through these years!!
@@samh3029 100% agree. John is always full of solid advice without any BS filler or hidden agendas.....just pure honesty which I appreciates as it’s so rare nowadays.
IMO ring dips are one of the best exercises for shoulder health, simply because they train you to really control the position of your shoulder blades & letting you build all those little stabilizers. After I did ring dips all summer long last year, I came back to bench pressing and immediately broke through my pre-Covid plateau - no shoulder issues.
My gym didn’t have rings (like most gyms) so I got myself a pair. A few weeks into it, someone asked if they could try it. This was a guy who I’d seen do regular dips with 2 plates if not close to that and he couldn’t even stabilize himself long enough to even try a rep. I’m not knocking the guy but the whole scenario illustrates how it can be so easy to push a lot of weight in the gym do so in a way where the strength isn’t too “functional”
Rest in Peace John, all the gains I've made in the gym have been because I started watching all of your videos that inspired me to start hitting the gym seriously. I started at 247 lbs at my heaviest and now I've dropped down to 205 whilst gaining muscle as I do it. God bless you and keep you john, I'm hitting my push day today and will be implementing dips in my routine.

Thanks coach!
This is my #1 chest exercise. If I could only do 1 chest exercise it would be dips. If I could only do 1 push exercise it would be dips. I also love doing extra negative reps at the end 😃 Best regards from Iran 🇮🇷

Absolutley bang on John. Dips have been my go to Chest exercise for last 45 yrs. And yes, Im old enough to know Vince Gironda, and actually have some of his books. Stay well.
This is how I’ve been instructing my clients for a long time. Nice to see someone so meritorious validate my preferences. Personally, I’m one of those guys who can get sternum pain from dips, doing them gymnast/gironda style has never made me feel that sternum pain.
@@hugueskellersaint-fleur4810 Improve your shoulder extension mobility and chest/shoulder flexibility, improve your scapular retraction/depression strength
I love doing dips like this. Gironda invented them and John kept the exercise going. I am seeing some great results from this exercise. Week by week I can do more and more and eventually I am going to start adding some weight with a dip belt. I miss John, such a great channel and great teacher.
As a novice I jus wanna say thanks I get so much outta your vids and you don’t fuck around and talk forever about shit that doesn’t apply to the title I love your vids they help me out so much thank you from Redondo beach ca
Great to see a shout out for Gironda !! That guy was the template for social media trainers - imagine how many subscribers he would have had if RUclips was around in the 60’s/70’s ?😎 He had some great insight in to mind muscle connection and kinesiology. On that point, by dropping your head forward in dips, you relax the levator scapulae and prevent the traps from engaging strongly on the negative of the dip, this frees the shoulder joints up a little, and also means you get harder engagement of the pecs in their eccentric phase. You are way more likely to trap a nerve or hurt your neck by looking forward or upward in a dip, than by tucking your chin 💪🏻👍
Absolutely right on the old style dip stand with a V taper wide in the front and narrowed going back so you could find just the right width. Mostly see combo leg lift/dip stands with only one width, which is too wide for me. I did weighted dips (before my shoulders got so messed up) and would hunch over for chest, crossing my ankles or more upright for triceps. Oh if only I was just starting out now watching your videos and techniques.
Great! Something new to try this afternoon! Of course, John says I like to add 2 or 3 plates - LOL! That gives me a goal to work toward for sure. Thank you John!
I've been watching Cavalier, Doucette, Nipard and others... But Meadows is the best... Nipard relies too much on studies, Cavalier is decent but he takes himself too serious and Doucette is entertainment. The others just don't have the depth of information and experience as John. He seems like a really decent guy too. Great video on dips
I started doing these like John a couple of years ago after seeing his vids, now it’s my go to way I try loads of John’s tips and they always work for me fantastic content most informative on RUclips without all the gimmicks. great work John and thanks from the UK.
I never did dips, they never felt right. When I found Mr. Meadows' channel a few years back I kept seeing him perform and rave about them. The first few times, I still hated them. But I kept throwing them in because hey, I trust John. Man if I haven't started loving them lately. It's all about form, and good form requires practice!
@mountaindog1 I like putting two barbells parallel in the power rack (with catches set high) for dips! This lets you play with the angle, as you can push the barbells together at one end and secure with a band or other apparatus! (TRAINING NERD MODE)
I first saw the thumb nail and thought , hmmm, looks similar to a Gironda dip. Then John names drop him at 2:10 - that's' why The Mountain Dog/this channel is the real deal. Any one who gives praise and reference to the iron gods before us gets my upmost respect. The nailed the blueprint aeons before we sullied them. These dips are the only version I do. Close to a year now. Chin tucked - feet pointed out. This can be done really well with a proper dip station with bars in V or U -shaped (although the U shaped are nearly impossible to find in person). Proceed with caution if trying to mimic the EXACT dip as Vince demonstrated on his people (Larry Scott for one..) as the flared out elbows will be hell on the wrist/shoulders. Good point mentioned here by John. One deff needs to play around with the grip to fit ones personal structure.
This is the gironda dip. Its a golden era exercise that arnie used to build his chest and develop that pec line. If you guys have the range of motion, go all the way down and get a deep stretch at the bottom. You want your face level with the bar and your elbows pointed up high. If you have banged up shoulders then john’s depth works fine too
I remember this technique from the video you have done with Jay Cutler. I could not fully understood it then. This video definitely answers a lot of questions. Thank you.
John I literally put this exercise in one of my videos on my channel ( I am definitely on a smaller scale then most RUclipsr’s ) VERY SMALLER SCALE!! but I know that modified deep is definitely effective.. I use it all of the time and it helped me tremendously! Thanks again for the tips ,tricks and safety lesson John 🙏
Im all into ring dips. I feel my chest wayyy more than the bars, and after you get used to the stabilization, it's not a limiting factor at all. The elbows put themselves in the 'perfect' spot by themselves on the rings.
I started to do this one as soon as i saw you do it, John and it works so much better. I can now really feel the chest muscle working. Before i dont know what i felt, lol
While I generally stay away from dips because of the potential shoulder issue, I agree with your form cues here to generally improve this movement & reduce risk of shoulder injury.
Awesome John. Thanks for all the tips and advice. I'm 51 and still lifting strong and always looking for ways to improve technique and learn something new.
what helped me, was your advise to use bands. i used them, till i was comfortable with the movement. now i can do dips and when i fail, i switch to the band again. so i can get a really good overload. i am not using weights or chains, this will be the next level.
So of course I have several bulging discs in my spine from my neck all the way to my lumbar so just looking downward puts a ton of strain on my spine. However ive been trying to do my dips like this and they are certainly harder this way. I can do weighted dips primarily triceps focused with as much as 90lbs around my waist. I do chest dips with legs out front and 3 sets with just body weight is difficult. Usually ill warm up on the dip cable machine where you can sit and really focus on the squeeze. Then ill do my working sets on the bars. Been really trying to work on the lower chest development.
