I've always thought that the BBC's annual 'sports personality of the year' a complete farce. Being able to find any sports person with a personality of any kind is in itself an almost impossible task, and then to create an award scheme based on such an elusive being is extremely puzzling.
'Sports personality' is the most mystifying concept ever; from what I've seen, 'sports' and 'personality' are mutually exclusive terms. I could understand the idea of 'most successful sportsperson' more, although I'd still rather watch dust settle. Well done, you: you kicked a ball around in a field. You jumped into a sandpit. You threw something further than somebody else did. You ran around in circles more quickly that someone else did. I find these activities in themselves boring and pointless enough, but to expect them to have personalities too? Also, why is this incredibly tedious programme shown on prime time TV?
